    Please more from this shoot! You are the first person to get your hands on the Pyxis. We've been starving for real world use scenarios!

      Yes!

    • @HGQjazz
      @HGQjazz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fundamentally the PYXIS is a Lumix S1H with BlackMagic color science. There's really nothing new about it. The specs relating to image quality is exactly the same as the S1H.

    • @CornOffTheCobb
      @CornOffTheCobb 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@HGQjazz I’m well aware. I have loads of cinema 6k videos to see footage. I don’t care about that. the body design is completely new. I want real world scenarios of working with it on set.

      The 6K FF is the same OLPF and same sensor -- same image. Just different IO and body.

    The most important part of this was knowing why he made his decisions!!!
    Thank you gee GOD bless you !!!

  • @matthewhartman7176
    @matthewhartman7176 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Thank you. Genuinely. Its refreshing to see a working DP not be overly technical as some of the posers preach, who present themselves as doing it all.
    It's good for other working DPs to feel normalized in our approach.
    "Barking out orders, but nobody is listening." 😂 That's some insider truth right there.
    'God damn it can I get the 70mm, for the fourth freaking time!"
    "I asked the Gaffer...". You forgot to highlight that before he/she said, "yep," there was a 15-minute conversation of what their opinion of cinematography is, and then the sound guy chimed in too. 😂

    • @jamarbrooks4690
      @jamarbrooks4690 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I agree as well. No shade to the content creators, but I’d rather hear from an actual filmmaker. I don’t want to hear stupid stuff like “Why did they put the monitor on the side?” For me there’s only 2 things I really care about in a camera. Image quality and ease of use.

    • @ericdargan
      @ericdargan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamarbrooks4690 I've shot on black magic cameras since 2016. It was accessible at the time for me, but I stayed for the raw files, the color science, and the fact that I love the image. The biggest issue black magic has had within the professional film community is it's build quality and performance issues. You can leave an Arri in the snow all day and it'll still turn on, but Black Magic's failed a few too many times and that's not something that's easy to get off your reputation. This was smart for black magic on two fronts: Patrick has a reputation as a DP first and speaks to those that are not looking to make content but work at the highest levels - by attaching his name to it they also get the access to his community. They could have gone with another working DP, but one without the community Patrick has built. On top of that Patrick is in Australia so saves them some $$$. Smart strategy on Black Magic's part.

    I’ve been following you for almost two years and this has to be one of the most helpful pieces of content you’ve released.
    I subscribed to the Patreon for a month or two, but didn’t find it as helpful as the courses or any more insightful than what you post on this channel.
    With that said, being able to see your work and hear your thought process as you take us through one of your shoots is extremely valuable content that I would pay $5-10 a month for.
    Also, I was excited to see Blackmagic choose you to shoot their content. I think it would be mutually beneficial if you shot all of their flagship camera content.

  • @retlwiz
    @retlwiz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’ve been a BM user for years and I don’t think the colours are in the same league as an Alexa. They seem just a bit more cheap and cheerful and there is more red in the skin tones. I know BM graded this, but you can see it here in the look of these shots. This is still probably a great camera to have for the money and useability issues will be huge. BM cameras are so easy to expose with and come with big screens, so no need for extra monitors to get false colour etc. BRAW is also a very good codec.

      @@wanderingdp❤ Does that mean not quite as in somewhat or rather not really?:)
      At say a native (2nd) ISO 3200, the outside lights could be dropped by 3 stops. The window would need to be gelled with more ND and then we’d be able to match a similarly exposed room.
      I guess what won’t be quite the same is the color science of it all. Thanks so much for answering :))

    Fantastic insight, thanks so much!
    That last shot, though. Did they use a motorized ND on the drone or was the exposure „animated“ in post? The image does get darker the further the drone flies, right? 🙈

    Let’s say you need 3 stops of ambient to attain the desired ratio- are you using a light meter or false color (or something else I don’t know about 👀) to make sure it’s exactly where you want it so you’re not eyeballing it

    • @wanderingdp
      @wanderingdp  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      use the iris of the lens. Iris to what you want window to look like then see how many stops you need to shoot at the aperture you want

      @@wanderingdp okay I do that, I need 3 stops, I pump light in unseen windows, it looks great on my monitor, but how will I know for sure how much light I’ve actually added? Like I know I NEED 3 stops, and the monitor looks good, but idk wtf I actually added, it could’ve been 2 stops, but idk how to tell how many I’ve added…. Does that make sense? Like is there a tool or some way to determine I’ve added what I needed- no more, no less. Thank you, you’re a gem, I really appreciate your time to help

    Honestly, as a 4-year BMPCC4K owner, I can say that Blackmagic cameras (and software if you wanna talk about Davinci) offer so much more bang for your buck compared to ANY of their competitors, it's amazing to me people still care about Arri and Red when the image is simply not better and you're paying 3-10X more. Yes. Shots fired.

    • @bbrunorocha
      @bbrunorocha 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Completetly agree ! Not only bang for buck, but in a couple projects I opted to use the 6k pro instead of the Komodo OG because of image quality and ISO, which for the project we shot, was more important, even though we had budget to rent either of them.

      Obviously the image won’t be better than an Arri or Red. It’s Patrick and his framework which made the Pyxis look as good as it does. If DPs had a choice the Pyxis wouldn’t be the first thought.

      @@Motionandstory Actually, yes and no. Yes the DP/camera person with vision and understanding of lighting and composition is the determining factor (Roger Deakins could make a snap cam look cinematic), but the differences between these cameras, in terms of resulting visual image, are so minor they really only matter to DPs because of highly nuanced preferences or just traditional use. Most of these cameras are interchangeable once you realize nobody's gonna know the difference. It's just marketing.

    Isn't this the same sensor as the full frame 6k? When you say, "the ability to hold the color and highlights, that's the thing that was lacking before", how when the sensor is the same as different older model? Just curious.

    Here in South Africa the Pyxis is selling for $4,500. That's a 50% mark up on the price set by Blackmagic.
    That's daylight robbery!
    It's cheaper for us to buy the camera direct from B&H, ship it ourselves and pay the import duties and we'll still save around $700!
    Hey Blackmagic are you aware of this?
    In case you're wondering why your market in South Africa isn't growing the way it should, now you know why.

    So what are your thoughts in this scenario where you had using the haze in the forest instead when you’re trying to somewhat diminish the contrast for the shoot why would you not use a low contrast filter to assist with that?
