      Its a definite classic. Best design of Forester in my opinion. I owned a 2022 Forester and recently upgraded to Outback XT because I think that will soon be a classic of its own before electrification takes over. The refined drive of the XT range with the off road capability makes these cars special.

    I really admire Subaru for being a simple/honest but properly competent all-weather vehicle. Their engine spec/drivetrain configuration hasn't changed for ages but still beats out a lot of the competition. The cabin on that Forester looks attractive and practical enough as well. Another top one Thomas.

    Great subjective review! I'm originally from a small town in the tropical north of Australia where EVERYONE has a Subaru, think coz it's like America's Colorado, where all wheel drive's an asset due to winding mountain roads, wet climate but in our case HEAVY monsoonal seasons (not snow like Colorado). Late 90s when my mum got her first new car & I picked the first generation Forester, coz all her friends were driving 'Gravel X' trim Impreza Sportwagons with raised suspension/two-tone paint (which the Forester was based on) & they always had stickers on the back windows noting the championship Rally heritage. They're rugged cars - circa 90s anyway. We loved that thing as it fit the brief perfectly, except the looks... we'd call it the ugly "breadbox". It crossed flooded creeks, took us camping in the Aussie outback, drove us through cyclones, stuck to the mountain range road in torrential rain even if there was an oil spill & other cars were spinning off the road - was like a rock on wheels, albeit an ugly rock.
    Subaru's ethos is very customer orientated, we used to get a bunch of surveys from asking about what we liked about the car & what we'd change. It's very much a brand for simplistic 'does what it says on the tin' types, brand loyalists & adventurists. My mum drives a boring bloody Camry now thanks to my stepdad but my sister just upgraded her Liberty B4 to the latest WRX. She said if she's gotta drive 50kms of wet winding mountain ranges to get to work & take the kids to school, then she's gotta have an incentive lol.

      Hi. Also in Europe there are some places where a lot of people has a Subaru. I live in northern Italy near Swiss border. This summer I went in Switzerland (in canton Wallis, where I hardly ever go) and almost 50% of the cars were Subaru! In Italy Subaru is a niece brand and they are rare cars, what a shame! I love subaru forester xt.

      Because Subaru configurations are lame! In Italy we want Manual, they put Manual with Low range on the 1.6 Crosstrek, why not in the 2.0 diesel or petrol? Why in Italy the VX/crosstrek 2.0 petrol has no Manual, but in France, Germany, Switzerland yes? I still have want to get a Subaru, Forester, XV or Levorg, But the Levorg will need a lift kit and If i take the Forester I need the seat rails of the XV to lower the seating position, I'm 190 and still find it to High.

    I love the Forester. To me, its the sort of car I would keep for years. It wouldn't date because its a Subaru. Tough, reliable, a car that is bought by people as a deliberate choice because of everything it stands for. A car for the individual who hates the plethora of bland Euro boxes that seem to fill our roads in the UK. This is a classy car that doesn't need to follow fashion. Can I have one please :)

    Nice review! We just bought the 2018 Outback model in the USA. We compared it with the Forester and found it slightly more comfortable and not as noisy on the highway. We also like the roomy cargo area, but the main feature for us, which is not always mentioned in reviews, is the amazing ground clearance you get with these vehicles. The 2018 has 8.7 inches of clearance, which we really need where we live. I really liked my previous vehicle, but because of our rough winter roads and dirt roads, this car with AWD and excellent ground clearance privides superior handling.

    Hey Thomas and crew,
    Thanks so much for this review-and all the others!
    I bought a naturally-aspirated (2.5-liter) Forester last month, and I'm sure you're right about the less powerful engine better suiting the vehicle's personality. Acceleration, while not hair-raising, is certainly adequate, and I've been averaging around 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) on lower octane fuel in mixed city-highway driving.
    Anyway, danke nochmal!
    Cheers from Kentucky!

    Thomas, another great review.
    I like, and agree, with your comment about being "timeless". However, yes, it may look like a car that was built some years ago but also it is a car that will look (and hopefully perform) good in the future as well.
    I like Subaru's direction of building cars-tools and deviates from the trendy / over-designed, over-digitalized-connected approach of European, N.American manufacturers. It feels like Subaru still makes cars that are conscious choices for drivers and not just "car consumers"

    Nice, professional and interesting feedback! Thank you! I own a 2015 XT with an overall 9.8l/100 over 30k km (mainly highways with Cruise Control and city drive). It can be pretty thirsty if you want to play hard on the throttle (14l). It's a-very - good car, keeping the best of old fashion: simplicity, practicity. When you want to accelerate from 0 to 100, better use the S mode. #S is better to overtake or mountain driving when cornering on hills! In that case, better to take control on the rev with the shifters to limit the boring CVT effect and get the best boost.

    This is the best review of the 2017 Subaru Forester that I have seen. It was very thorough, and I especially enjoyed your personal insights/comments. Also, the video and audio was top notch. I have owned several Subarus in the past (1973 was my first), including a WRX. My next purchase will likely be a Forester. I'm patiently waiting until Subaru does a complete makeover of the Forester, which I hope will be no later than the 2020 model year. Although it is a great vehicle and enjoyed by many here in the mountains of western Maine (we have snow nearly up to the windows at my house), it is getting "old in the tooth" as they say. In the meantime, I will look forward to watching more of your automotive reviews. Thanks again for such a superb and professional presentation.

    There is no SUV (in north america), that has 250hp turbo, eyesight technology, xmode, hill decent control, 8.7" groud clearance, steering responsive headlights, rear heated seats, heated steering wheel, memory seats etc.. Forester Xt with eyesight is by far the best suv in the segment.

      Heated rear seats aren't available in the States, unfortunately. I believe Canada is the only North American country that has that option. It's a shame, too. I'd love to have it on ours. [Without having to do a Frankenstein hack job modification.]

    • @sapientbudgie5652

      Interesting. I thought Australia had rear heated seats and headlight washers. They don't give Canadians that silver trim piece that's in the lower plastic garnish. I had to order it from Japan parts. I think the silver trim on bottom looks more polished. Also, the piano black trim is carried on to the doors in this video over the window up/down. In canada, it's just black plastic. Silver trim around the cup holders at the front and piano black trim around the rear cup holders in this video does not come with the Canadian Limited XT. I just got a 2017 last week with eyesight and traded in my 2014

    • @tayl0rd553
      @tayl0rd553 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sapient Budgie
      I think most every other country has the option of heated rear seats except the States. Canadians get the silver roof rails. The States get the black rails. I guess that's the tradeoff since we get the chrome trim on the side skirts. haha There's no piano trim around the window switches in this video. We have a '17 XT Touring, and it doesn't have the piano black trim around the window switches. Ours has the same interior as this one.

    • @sapientbudgie5652
      @sapientbudgie5652 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In canada I think it's only the XT limited with eyesight that gets the silver roof rails. I got the brown leather with black exterior. My wife drives it mostly, but I do love it. A lot quieter than my 2014 and a lot more features. Love the memory seats finally. I also have a 2016 Sti and an Audi S4 and waiting for my Model 3 tesla I preordered.

    Hi Thomas,
    Subaru's Lineartronic CVT enables the driver to select programmed gear ratios via use of the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, in effect emulating some characteristics of true automatic and manual transmissions. For example, a great use of the paddle shifters is for the driver to command engine braking, which has the CVT select a programmed gear ratio that it sticks to, say, throughout the duration of a downhill slope. Other than that, the use of the paddles can also enable smoother takeoffs by the selection of a higher 'gear ratio' when starting from a standstill. It can also prevent wheel spin off the line on slippery surfaces.
    These are just some of the functions and uses of paddle shifters in CVT equipped cars, not to mention better management of fuel economy and power.
    Nonetheless, a great review Thomas!

      "not to mention better management of fuel economy and power."
      If so why cars with the CVT are slower and use more fuel than their manual counterparts?

    • @matthewdyczek938
      @matthewdyczek938 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sic22l, I'm not quite sure which vehicles you are referencing, but I do believe that they don't compete with the Forester, or any other CVT equipped vehicle

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Dyczek Any vehicle where you can choose between manual and CVT. CVT is always much slower and less economical.

    • @matthewdyczek938
      @matthewdyczek938 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      sic22l, you must understand that a CVT in current pedestrian vehicles act as an intermediary between managing power and fuel economy - it's not one or the other as you are comparing to other transmissions. Take for example the Forester with a manual transmission, it in fact gets worse fuel economy than the CVT equipped version with the same engine because it is designed to focus more on performance than economy. Take as another example the Prius hybrid - that has an electronic CVT that is tuned to work as economically as possible by simultaneously providing all the power it can muster. And although there is not a manual Prius on the market, it still achieves better fuel economy than any manual car.
      Then again, power and fuel economy management has a lot to do with the engine fitted to any transmission as well.

    Now, despite its exterior design doesn't call me (I appreciate you described it "classical look"! I could feel the very good built-quality here, I appreciated more its interior with the feeling of a very good quality as well! For me, people who are not looking for a very beautiful exterior design, but only care about practicality, functionality, price and agent facilities, then this car is not bad at all as an answer! :)

    The CVT on the Subaru XT simulates shifting up to 8 gears in the S# (sport-sharp) driving mode, and 6 gears in the Sport and Intelligent driving modes. This is what the shifting-pads on the steering wheel are used for, and the left +\- switch in the gear selector manual mode

  • @artemusje2
    @artemusje2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First of all I definitely like this blue, very beautiful!
    The car itself is quite nice, the old school rugged look works quite well here and also the interior is not bad at all. I can see why people would choose this one over the more polished and refined alternatives. And if you do serious off-roading and/or use it as a workhorse it's likely the better choice..
    I'm not a fan of the CVT, but they do seem to simulate gear shifts when going full throttle in sport mode, by letting the revs jump up and down between 5000 and 6000. Not a bad idea, the new Honda Civic seems to do that as well

    I like the Forester. It's very no-nonsense design and good, solid, built to last. The design is never going to set the world on fire but it is all you will need. The boxer engine sounds great too! It is not trying hard to be something it isn't. Good, honest car. The only fly in the ointment is the horrible CVT gearbox!

    I just bought a more basic, 2017 Subaru Forester with the cloth seats and the standard, normally aspirated engine. Even though I live at 6 thousand feet ( more than 1800 meters) the engine keeps up with traffic with the added bonus of better fuel economy and perhaps a little quieter ride. Compared with my old Prius the Forester is quiet like a luxury car and it has a much better view out. I like the lane-keeping and braking systems that warn and direct you if I get too careless. To me the only needed feature that is missing is a full-blown hybrid system which to me is more useful than a turbo for better fuel economy and acceleration. Thanks for your great review as always and for the taste of Germany, where I was born 60 years ago.

  • @ukvamp
    @ukvamp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    the reason why the turbo gauge was showing a minus depends on the exact setup, but in general turbo is located before the throttle, and the boost gauge is measuring pressure after the throttle in the intake manifold.
    Even while the turbo is spinning and pressurizing the intake piping, the throttle is blocking that pressure from reaching the intake manifold. Thus, the gauge reads negative pressure as the engine pumps against a closed throttle.

    Great review, Thomas. I subscribed to your channel not too long ago and have to say that your reviews are too notch.
    I actually have a Forester exactly line this one, but with beige interior and it's a 2016. The SI-Drive (those pesky little buttons on the steering wheel you played with) is one of the features that convinced me to buy this car. The three available driving modes literally change the car's driving behaviour, but it won't show at WOT, like you did. The three driving modes really stand out on twisty roads, where the SI-Drive changes throttle mapping, transmission response and transmission gearing. One can really get three very distinct driving experiences through those three modes. Ohh, and on S# you get 8 predefined gears (both on manual and drive) while in "intelligent" and "sport" two you get 6 gears in manual mode and the classic cvt action when on drive.
    And keep up the good reviews!! You now have at least one subscriber from Rio, Brazil... :)

    I really like this vehicle, it has a good ammount of "old-school" for a SUV, without going to the extreme of separate chassis and body (like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Trailblazer). Also that engine is amazing!

    In addition to my comment below, I live in Alaska, and often for many months out of the year, can use the generous ground clearance of the Forester and its' great off-road handling, especially in snow.

    Thank you for a nice review, it was entertaining and informative to watch. One small comment on the cabin noise in your review; it looks like you had the sun roof inner panel opened up while driving on the motorway. Closing it up reduces the cabin noise so that would have affected the noise during your drive in a negative way.
    I drive an older Forester XT and the difference with/without the sun roof panel closed is noticeable.
    Regarding the cargo space: the passenger seat can be folded back (after sliding the seat forward to the front position) which gives you plenty of room for laying out long items over the passenger seat. I can place a stack of 65 cm wide and 305cm long boards inside the car cabin in my older Forester. This newer Forester should be able to take similar or slightly larger sized items.
    Keep up the good work and all the best!

    Great video for sure. At 18:17 Thomas says he's "had a quite hectic day" - he's certainly been busy with all these great reviews. Forester? They used to be quite tough work-horses, soldiering on and on. This facelift is quite well priced in the UK, reflected by having none of the latest gizmos - no adaptive cruise (shame, at least they could have thrown in 'Eyesight'), no AEB even. No Lane or Side Assist, HUD, Area View, heated steering wheel. Just a simple spacious work-horse, with a rather dull interior and a CVT - sounds like a good old Forester! Nice car.

  • @kevcaster
    @kevcaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I came to my Forester from a Mercedes C350 and found the interior equally high quality with fewer gimmicks and the overall build quality the same for both. I would mention that the Boxer engine provides a very smooth delivery, much like a 6 cylinder petrol engine, not many reviewers seem to notice this or talk about it. The infotainment is not great otherwise the Subaru is a fine car. I get 8.33 ptrs each 100km from my 2.0ltr naturally aspirated engine, 7.8 on a long run.

    Dear Thomas, you make always fantastic and precisious tests. Now I suggest about the "minus turbo pressure" is not the pressure of turbo, but the pressure of the air intake tube. Before the turbo starts, the engine is in suction mode, means real minus comparing with atm. All the best, and thanx for your tests! Adam

    There is some videos on how this gearbox works, it uses a belt and know gears as such, uses like a cone to create the bigger and smaller gears.
    In the #S mode it basically has virtual gears where they have preset points in the gearbox to act like individual gears if that makes sense

    Hello Thomas, very nice and detailed presentation, as always. In regards to the difference between the two cars, i' d like to say that character is not always a bad thing, especially for older people like me.Everything depends on each one's needs and preferences.Personally, I would feel much safer in a four-wheeled vehicle like Forester,, especially on mountain roads or in adverse weather conditions.

    'Boost' is negative because the intake manifold is in vacuum when the throttle body is closed (foot off throttle). Boosted cars that do not indicate negative boost are actually incorrect, due to oversimplification.

    If you live in a city that doesn't get snow or ford's/floods etc then this may not be for you. However any off roading or slightly more extreme conditions, then this is a good option. While other vehicles will get stuck, this has a good chance.

    The boost pressure is under zero as long as you do not step a little bit harder on the gas pedal. Because as long as the turbo isen't working strong enough the engine works like a naturally aspirated engine and you have a negative pressure in the intake system. (I am sorry if my english was not the best...)

    Why do you see a negative reading at the boost indicator at the top display? As the car enthusiast you like to be, you should know that while engine is idling there is a vacuum inside the intake manifold (thats the part between throttle body and the intake valves)! As soon as the engine revs, the turbo is producing more & more pressure an you see a possitve reading.

    This is the only Suv in Australia we can get in a manual the other is a RAV 4 diesel. Both Rav and Sub have 110 kw of power but the Forester has a better towing capacity at 1800 to Ravs 1100. Rav is more reliable. It's a tough decision.
