Thanks for subscribing and the encouraging words. Other people don’t realize that it takes about 60-80 hours of researching, fact checking, scripting, filming, editing and posting. This is on top of the countless cars that I inspect every day. In the end I feel it’s a good days work to help people with their car buying decisions.
Seasoned shopmen told me "don't change transmission oil if no issues are observed" . It was the best explanation for the term "lifetime". And agreed , I had never changed it in my Huindai Elantra Supreme 2008 living in a tropical country, Colombia.
I had a 2001 Chevy Malibu with 360,000 miles on it and I never changed the transmission fluid! I drove it to the salvage yard because it was so rusted out.
Me too, I've been trying to get the straight talk on the gasket issues for years, thank you Greg for giving it to us straight and telling it like it is, that Subaru messed up.
@@swavekbu4959 could be blown out of proportion. I had an 08 wrx for 12 years and never had a head gasket issue and it's the same engine as far as I know. I just bought a 2016 forester and it's fine. but it's good to hear the potential issues for sure. Issues like this come on EVERY car.
Blown head gaskets are rare after 2008. The oil burning is not an issue after 2014. Subaru CVTs are not made by Jatco the CVT is Subaru's own design and are generally reliable (for a CVT).

I have a 2015 Forester, at 76k I had to change the engine block under warranty because the previous owner did the oil changes every 10k or 15k miles, after they changed the block I do the oil changes every 4K miles and the CVT fluid and differential fluid every 30k miles, currently has 93k miles with no problems and now is a tank, and gone to the shop for maintenance
I currently own a first gen ‘01 Forester which I do every single repair on myself, including overhauling its engine with MLS head gaskets. After doing so, the car has been a tank! I love this car! ❤️

I bought a Forester 2011 two years ago and the engine simply broke (some people said to me that was caused by lack of lubrification) causing a very dissapointment. And a big financial broke to me, especially in Brazil where the replacement parts costs almost a half of the car price, that was my case. I had to sell the car with the engine not running, it was a huge mass. If i knew your tips before, for sure that it would never could happen. By the way, i´ve never heard so good information about Subaru than yours. It´s a really masterpiece for whose are looking for an used model. Congrats for your excellent work! Keep going!
i own a 2015 2.5 cvt with 173k miles and no issues. A lot of how problematic a vehicle is depends on how its driven. I drive mine like a family car. no racing, no offroading and no problems at all with the cvt or engine. I do change my oil at about 4k and keep a eye on my fluid levels. Forester still runs like its new for the miles. Bottom line don't beat the shit out of your car thinking its a racecar and it will last for years.
8:40 OIL CATCH CAN... I installed, greatly reduced oil consumption in my SH Forster. I also run 5W-30 full synthetic oil in the warm weather, as it's listed as an option in the Subaru owner's manual. I change the oil every 4,000 mi, or sooner if it looks really dirty and smells burnt. Great video 👍
I have a 2011 that had most of the engine replaced at 75K miles. At 119K it was found to have a blown head gasket, which was replaced at the 75K mark. Somewhere north off $4K to replace a head gasket through Subaru. Subaru of America offered me a $500 voucher for the work to be done. It's a great little car in the snow, especially when we lived in Colorado, but after this and other QC issues we've had I'd take a hard look at the RAV4 or the CRV.
Sometimes is cheaper to replace the whole engine you can find it for around 1000$ to 1500$depend on miles and while you there change the timing belt and water pump wich is way easier with the engine out...and you will have no worries for at least 80k miles or more...buying another car is not always the best...you never know what you are into...and you loose more selling and buing than just replacing engine and keeping the car that you already knows what you did fix and what not👌🏻

Every cars have recalled 2-5 in Honda, Toyota and Germany cars and American cars. My Forester '14 has No oil Consumption problem either...
@@TheAmatureExpert love my 2010 forester. my only complaint is as mentioned the dated even when new 4 speed auto transmission. I came from a manual so giving up the control of shifting was already a change but she sure doesn't know what gear to be in some times, a little gas and nothing until a lag then vroom. Takes a bit of getting used to. Get better shifting from having it in sport mode but also if you dont drive like a maniac helps as well and really a forester is never a speed machine anything, far from any of the goals of this vehicle. Otherwise fantastic vehicle that can get into some decent off road.
it's shameful that subaru owners will give this company a pass for having head gasket issues for almost an entire decade. i owned a forester and outback, the forester consumed oil like a drunken sailor and subaru claimed 1 qt consumption every 1,000 miles is "normal" for a modern vehicle LOL.... and the outback was recalled numerous times and started falling apart before i even had 3,000 miles. i decided enough is enough and decided to buy a used toyota rav4 and it's been problem free ever since
Nope - I've been at war with them since my engine swap (exactly the same story you described). They were so lazy they literally put the old plugs into the new engine. Cylinder misfire almost immediately. On a new engine. Now dealing with a bad gasket. On a new engine. I'm not joking. I can't wait to never drive a Subaru again for the rest of my life.
You would have to bring it to a Subaru dealership to do an oil consumption test to see if you qualify for a new engine from Subaru. They will cover it if it's qualified for a new one
I’ve always been a Subaru man. But not anymore. They got greedy. & started putting cheaper parts 2014 could tow 3200 lbs 2015 only 1100. That tells me there cutting corners & losing a ton of loyal Byers’s
Owned both 2011 and 2014 Foresters. Both used oil but I checked it regularly and added as needed. Found it to be no big deal. Had a transmission valve body failure in the 2014 at around 190,000 km. The Canadian service schedule calls for transmission fluid change every 100,000 km . Never had any head gasket issues. Have a 2017 Outback with 122,000 km . No problems so far.
My 2014 burns oil too, not an issue for the engine so long as you top it up once in a while. Only issue I’ve had with that is the burnt oil clogged the catalytic converter, something Subaru quoted me well over CAD$2000 to fix. Not worth it for mine since it’s up there in kilometres, but it makes pressing the throttle feel jolty. I assume as it gets worse I’ll start to lose power. Highly recommend anyone considering the 2014 model to check the cat, it’s not a cheap repair.
@@jessesmith2906 Just got your post( question) . You probably already have bought ( or not) the 2015 Forester. As for the transmission; has it had a fluid change? If so ,how many km or miles ago? I would get a Subaru owner friend to test drive with you. I had no indication of imminent failure. A lot of dash lights came on as well as some ‘ beeps”. Was able to drive to Subaru dealer ( 30 miles). Repair ( valve body) was done in a day. They had one in stock. First felt lucky but then wondered why they would stock such an expensive part if this wasn’t a common problem. Hope that answers your questions.
I drive a 2005 forester, replaced the engine when I bought it because the previous owners didn’t take care of it. Had it for around 5000 miles(we’re about to hit 200,000) love it

Great video! I have owned 14 Subarus and have experienced most of these common failures. Currently have an 01 Forester and my wife has an 09 Forester. Got both dirt cheap.....why??? Both had bad headgaskets. I did my own repairs removed the engines and replaced gaskets. Both drive fantastic !!

Yet another awesome video thanks Greg . So in a nut shell, things to watch out for are, External oil leaks, internal oil leaks, steering oil leaks, internal coolant leaks, oil to coolant leaks, coolant to oil leaks, oil in spark plugs, transmission failures, both CVT and standard automatics. Not to mention front inner CV boots and worn/cracked suspension bushings. All in all, among the most reliable cars on the road until 10 years or 120,000 kilometres. Best enjoyed while new all the data suggests. (Still much more reliable and durable than the average European equivalent)
Between my brother and I we have owned 4 subarus, including an older 2000 Impreza 2.5, 08 wrx, and late model 2015 forester XT, and 6cyl outback, all had no head casket issues....
I had a 2009 Forester that I kept for almost 10 years, only problem was slight oil consumption. I then bought a 2019 Ascent which I kept for almost 2 years, I had problems with the tailgate not opening fully all the time and the radio head unit had to be replaced. I now own a 2020 Forester Limited and I love it. I snow ski and they all have great traction.
Bought a Forester in 2014 in SA with no regrets, It did use oil though, and had to top up the oil every two months or so. Bought a new one a week ago with the sport sport trim. There are definite improvements and the 2.5 litre engine is noticeably more powerful in the newer version and the drive a bit smoother although the 2014 model was a very comfortable ride . I have become a massive Subaru fan and don't see myself switching brand any time soon
Wow - that comment on "life time" transmission fluids is the best way I've ever heard it put! This was a great video; Subaru has always been one of those brands were you tend to get highly polarized opinions one way or the other, and this explains in great detail how the truth is sort of in the middle, and reliability has a _lot_ to do with the specific model year and equipment choices. On the bit about oil changes, I always cringe at manufacturers continuing to recommend these "extended" oil change intervals as if it's some sort of positive selling point about their engines. Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are not - that is the simple truth that will never change. Even in my modern vehicles I stick to changing it ever 5000km or every year.
*I'm on my 2nd Subaru. First a 2013 Forester XT and now a 2021 Outback XT. One thing I've noticed about the Forester was the factory tune. It was so rough on cold start it would actually throw a misfire code. I had a code clearing tool and had to use it quite often. If you buy a Turbo Subaru change the oil every 3,000 miles. I don't care what anyone says. Turbos are hard on oil because of the heat. Every oil change I could see the oil was very dirty. That's fine but you have to change it and you will be OK.*
@@xoxpriscillagot totaled in dec 2022 brakes never worked in snowy/icy conditions :( when I was driving at 35 to 40 mph. No safety feature worked before collision like collision assist or automatic ABS braking bla bla bla.. both air bags were deployed though. Bottom line is no matter what car you're driving crv or forester or tacoma, if the conditions are deadly your car can't save you. You just have to drive below 30 mph or even below 25 mph to make sure you don't lose traction. Yes the car had braking issues and I was going to take it to Subaru dealership but I guess I should have done that sooner Also, my search tells me that forester models only starting 2020 onwards are most reliable. So I won't recommend anyone buying any forester model earlier than 2020.

Bought a 2015 forester with a manual transmission a month ago. So far I love it, guess I’ll just hope for the best and change the oil often. I only drive about 8k miles a year on average. Here in Vermont every other car is a forester. 🤷🏻♀️
@@patdaveoneil we humm'ed and hawed about getting the turbo, or normal 2.5, but the seats in the Onyx were superior, and the power is a bit addictive, mpg around 26-30, depending...and the Onyx can haul a 3500 lbs trailer, the 2.5 only 2700 lbs. The 2.5 returns another 5mpg, than the Onyx. Thanks.
@@darrellborland119 I personally haven’t driven any of the turbo models but I definitely have to agree. The thing I really don’t like about the turbo is that it takes premium gas and on top of that, gets worse gas mileage. The power that the 2.5 non turbo puts out is adequate for most daily driving, but it really struggles getting up hills especially when it’s loaded with a bunch of people and gear. I’ve noticed quite a difference between when I have multiple passengers and when it’s just me in the car. If my next car is also a Subaru, I’ll strongly consider going for either the turbo or H6 (depending on the model of course).
@@patdaveoneil Patrick, the XT runs on regular gas....unlike the old 3.6 and much more efficient than older Suby's. A new XT runs close to 40K...not a good deal, unless you really want to pay the dEaler' full price. Thanks.
The XT takes regular fuel, and is significantly more powerful than the H-6, etc., and much better mpg. The only issue is the price...way too high. Thanks, and the afore-mentioned attrocious info center.
I picked up a used 2009 Forester X auto in Melbourne Australia, from a car wrecker of all places. Had 279,000km on it. Just gave it a oil change and new tyres. Got a permit for it to drive to Nth Qld, some 3300km towing a 17 foot euro caravan it made it (was a 1150kg van so inside our legal tow requirements) Made it on our shocking flood damaged roads also adding a extra 500km on the trip to bypass my usual route. Not something I would ever recommend but the old 4 speed auto did it easy, would never try it with a CVT auto or any type.
Its only the 2.5 variant that has head gasket issues. The 2.0 litre petrol is the best engine. Im a UK 🇬🇧 guy who drives a 2011 diesel version with 98k miles on the clock and doesn't burn or leak oil and the same with water. I love it. I've only changed the usual stuff like brake discs and pads and tyres but that's it. Stay away from the 2.5 unless you drive like "Driving miss daisy"
For reference: 2002 Forrest S. At 130,000 miles the valve gasket went, as did the oil pan gasket. At 160,000 head gasket started to externally leak, but very, very slowly. Around 190,000 miles the catalytic converter would cause the check engine light to go on, and off. I timed it right for three years to get past emissions. Around 225,000 miles the external HG leak had not changed, but a very small external water leak from the HG started. I used a couple stop seals, which worked pretty good. Just over 240,000 miles (yes, 80,000 miles with a small external HG oil leak!) the struts on the rear were shot, the alloy rims started to finally wear, and the water pump started to crap out. At this point, I'm considering the car near the end of it's life, and looking for a new(er) Subaru. Great video, btw.

As always, great review of Subaru Foresters. I have 2nd generation Forester, and I love driving it. It’s so much fun. It feels confident on any surface. Subarus have their weak points, but if you take care of them, they will last.
I have a 2014 forester currently with 234K mostly freeway miles on it and, it still runs good. Early on a Subaru tech recommended that I use 5w-30 full synthetic oil in my hot southern climate and, to use a Wix filter instead of the blue Subaru filter which is basically a Fram. He also told me to change the oil on a shorter interval than Subaru suggested. I currently use about 3/4 to 1 quart in 5000 miles, it varies with the temperature. At it's current mileage I'm going to lower the interval to 4000 (I always change it myself). At freeway speed (70+ mhp) I average between 27 to 28.5 MPG and between 31.5 and 34 MPG when driving a 55 -60 MPH, depending on road conditions. I occasionally go off road so now I need new struts and lower control arms. I have more than gotten my money's worth out of this car and, it still wants to keep going. PS; I had the transmission fluid changed at about 160K miles (drain and refill, no flush). The fluid that came out didn't look too bad. I'll likely sell this one and get a new one next year.
Thank you Greg as always! Great video. I want to love Subaru, but these longstanding defects keep me away. The fuse that disables AWD is when you have to use the space saving spare. If left in AWD the computers try to compensate for the tire diameter mismatch and damage can be done. My Father owned a Imprezza Outback Sport. I had a flat and looked at the owners manual to find the above info.

Thank god i own a 2018 forester. And he is right i hate the infotainment system. Also the cvt transmission, it does slip on lower RPMs. But other than that i dont have any other complains. And the car is exceptional in Snow
Great video. Once more, I am glad I got the top of the line 2.0 Turbo 2018 model. Mechanics and dealerships keep on wanting to buy it - almost 4 years old and only 27,000 miles.
As an about to be first time Subaru Forrester owner it was great learning more about the history of this car. It seems that all manufacturers go through development problems with some struggling more than others. I am glad that Subaru worked some of their challenges. I have always been a 3,000-4,000 mile interval oil change guy regardless of what the manufacture might say as I would rather do it more often then be sorry. Great job on the video!
Some people are just stubborn. Porsche put the engine in the wrong location for the 911 and has spent many decades trying to engineer their way around it rather than relocate the engine.
A few other known issues to watch for on older Subarus: In cold weather fuel lines would leak - happened as late as 2005 on my Legacy GT Turbo, but no recall despite having the same issue as some of the WRX's, imprezas, etc. Also power steeing pump seems to be a common problem and is quite expensive to replace.
Just had to replace the fuel line on my 2005 forester this winter. Was leaking bad. I did manage to replace the hose without removing the intake, but it took me 2 days in -5 degree cold and it sucked. But got it done and no leaks.
I am the original owner of my 1984 Subaru Brat, changed the engine oil every 3,000 miles religiously and all of the other fluids (Coolant, Diff /Trans.Transfer Case Gears, Brake Fluid every 30k. Never had a problem. Only parts needing replacement over it lifetime so far other than normal wear parts (Tires & pulley belts) have been the water pump, thermostat and alternator. With over 200k miles, albeit not my daily driver since 1997, my '84 Brat remains in great mechanical condition and the original paint still las a nice luster and the interior has held up very well with no dash cracks or excessive seat wear. Yes, it has become a garage queen and Iit only goes to local car cruises and show anymore, but it was my first foray into owning a Subaru, the only brand I have owed ever since 1984 My 2006 Baja is my present daily driver and I am going for a new Baja to be offered by Subaru again soon since there is a compact pickup truck craze going on right now that Subaru needs to join.
My 2017 Forrester is a fantastic car. I have around 80,000 km and I've spent $200 to recharge the A/C and regular oil changes. Never been in the garage otherwise. I live in weather challenged Calgary, Alberta and never had winter tires and my Forrester has never let me down. It has been driven across Canada twice. I had a 2007 Forrester which was the best car I've ever owned. Just luck I guess.
My 01 Forester was rebuilt after being found in a flooded ditch.. got it free with salvage title...160.000 miles... Head gasket, timing belt, New struts all around.. plus plugs and had to epoxy the sun roof because it was on its roof when I towed it out of the water.. still don't who or what rolled it upside down and left there for about a year...I buffed the paint and steam cleaned the interior... been driving it 7 years change oil often...it has never used a drop ..it has 245,000 miles now and is running like a champ..I live on a steep drive so I do got front cv axles ordered and going to replace those..even though the clicks are minimal and only when I cut the wheel hard up the mountains... But that car is the best car I have ever owned in my whole life.. hands down.. plus if you can fix it your self...blown Subarus used to be dirt cheap back 10 years ago... but people are getting wise now..
I'll most likely get another gen 2 over 160.000 and blown ..to build a street style reliable project but if I can afford it maybe do a full swap with a BMW m5.. lol and lift my current Forester and make a camping ride.. take out the rear seats . Who knows...even if I was Rich .. the cars are so ugly and not engineered to be fixed..it's sad .. local mechanics are amazing and Smart ppl..who make good money..but won't touch anything after 2017ish .. so dealerships litterly are doing some evil things... New cars are made to have all kinds of simple things just pop up... sensors seat motor. A wheel alignment go loose in the first 40,000 miles..then the special tools and certification to even touch it...fix it for Penny's and 200$ hr labor... just to have a 50.000$ car go to the scrap yard .. after the value is nothing and it's not worth fixing...sad times for the auto industry.. other than fleet trucks and vans .. simple and made for work only with good resale and quick repairs ... cheers guys good luck.. diesels probably a 2500 ram or 250 Ford would be the only one vehicle that would be a good investment for work, resale and ever lasting.. my penis is a good size and a don't work rednecking keeping up with my good ol boys in construction or pull 10,000 lb trailers .... haha. I will own a Lincoln LS in my future most stylish and classy car from my life as a party kid with a pimp cruiser.... But they are the worst built cars Ford has ever made...so I don't know shit.. just that there was a bus stop near by . lol
This is exactly what I needed in my quest to learn more about my 2011 Subaru Forester Fuel Consumption Test Recall, the Subaru service here totally messed up (on purpose because it would extend the warranty), and they were trying to get one over on me (a woman). Before that, there was the driver's Airbag recall, they replaced, then the back middle seat recall, as it does not hold a baby seat. There will never be three baby seats in the back of my Subaru; would rather have three regular seat belts working instead. The 4th Recall, (unless I forgot one) was the Passenger Seat Takata airbag recall. This had put my passengers at risk for 9 years. Shrapnel could have killed us. Luckily, I am a safe driver to avoid accidents for 60 years. Or, I have a guardian angel or both. Mileage is only 37,000, and I keep up with maintenance and check oil and tire pressure as well. I bought a case of oil to always have some in the car to avoid the high cost of oil at a gas station. I got offered some pretty high amounts if I wanted to sell. Good to know. I really like this channel but I have to say: we own a 2000 Subaru Forester with 170,000 miles and we never had to replace the head gaskets until a year ago. Never overheated. Just a few drops showing up on the garage floor over time. The car works great, pulls strongly, runs fine at 80 mph, no rust. Even the interior, with the exception of the driver-side carpeting, is completely intact and we haul around two dogs in it every day.
Just for clarity, our 2009 Forester had the single layer graphite-coated head gaskets which failed at around 120k miles.. I'm a Subaru fan and do my own work, so I pulled the engine, did the heads with new MLS gaskets, did a full seal kit. timing belt set with water pump, spark plugs, checked hoses,, all that stuff. I also replaced all of the fluids including rear diff, trans, brake fluid, power steering. Runs like new and should be good for another 150k miles. Total cost was around $900 for all OEM stuff. Car's in great shape so I think it was money and time well spent. And, yes, I change the oil religiously every 4000-5000 miles using good synth and only OEM oil filters.
my 1998 forester did over 276,000 kms without blowing a head gasket , regular servicing may be the reason , gave that to my daughter and bought a 2008 model , and after several years developed a few minor problems that no one could diagnose , so i traded it for a 2015 model in 2017 and its still going great . great cars !! only other choice would be a toyota rav 4 .
The spark plug grommets become hard and leak oil. Check for this. The AC evaporator is expensive to replace because it is hard to get at on the RHD version. The silver plastic interior elements are easily scuffed and can become discoloured. The manual gearbox shifter bush can fail. These things happen at high mileages. The Forester is an excellent car. I'm on my second and will probably get another. I love the roadholding, and the EJ253.

That was great info, Greg. You did a great job of summarizing the reliability issues, I also appreciated your pointing out that the new model -- while better looking inside -- is a sea of buttons!
2011 with FB25 still running. Had to replace piston rings because of oil consumption. Did it myself because Subaru wanted 7000 usd for the fix. Used Mahle rings with their gap sizing instead of Subaru’s and so far so good. Still burns oil, like a quart every 4000mi. But that’s 8x better than before. I think boxers are meant to burn oils, just look at Porsche tolerances.
I would also mention that putting accessories like homelink and heated mirrors and remote start are easy to install on the 2019 forester as the wiring is already there to accommodate.
FB20 engine in 2011-2012 Forester SH (III) and Forester SJ (IV) consumes way less oil when you use 5W30 instead of 0W. It seems that 5W30 is actually better for engine, but they recommend 0W because of lower emissions. What's interesting, Subaru Europe actually recommends 5W30 (in countries like Poland). So 5W30 can't hurt your engine, it will actually decrease oil burning and carbon deposits related to burning oil.

I would get a 2.5i 4 cylinder Outback if it was my decision, especially since I actually bought a 2012 Outback with a 4 cylinder 2.5i engine. Not only do I find them a bit roomier, since they are Subaru's flagship model, they also get more focus from the company. It is a bit quieter than the forester too and the longer body but a shorter roof means that it's less likely to roll over in the event that you have to doge something. I also appreciate the Outback's length vs the Forester's height. It just means that if you want you could stick longer items into it which is handy if you want things like bikes or skis. They're both great vehicles, and I would try to go 2009 and up on both since that's when Subaru fixed the head gasket issue. I would say that both are awesome, and whichever you purchase I'm sure they'll be great reliable cars for years and years. Just get a 2009 and up, a 4cylinder, and a 2.5i engine. Whatever you don't buy a Subaru WRX, they are known for poor reliability and score abysmally in JDPower and Consumer Reports reliability score.

I have a 2017 forester with 98,000 miles. Only problem was ball joints replaced and the battery drain issue but had computer updated and hopefully that will fix it.

Subaru of America seems to be the only ones that follow the lifetime fluid philosopy....Canada and Japan does have service intervals on the CVT.
Seasoned shopmen told me "don't change transmission oil if no issues are observed" . It was the best explanation for the term "lifetime". And agreed , I had never changed it in my Huindai Elantra Supreme 2008 living in a tropical country, Colombia.

Blown head gaskets are rare after 2008. The oil burning is not an issue after 2014. Subaru CVTs are not made by Jatco the CVT is Subaru's own design and are generally reliable (for a CVT).

I’ve seen so many Subarus on the used car market with high mileage. I think that’s says more than the complaints that are passaged around.
I have a 2015 Forester, at 76k I had to change the engine block under warranty because the previous owner did the oil changes every 10k or 15k miles, after they changed the block I do the oil changes every 4K miles and the CVT fluid and differential fluid every 30k miles, currently has 93k miles with no problems and now is a tank, and gone to the shop for maintenance
I currently own a first gen ‘01 Forester which I do every single repair on myself, including overhauling its engine with MLS head gaskets. After doing so, the car has been a tank! I love this car! ❤️

I bought a Forester 2011 two years ago and the engine simply broke (some people said to me that was caused by lack of lubrification) causing a very dissapointment. And a big financial broke to me, especially in Brazil where the replacement parts costs almost a half of the car price, that was my case. I had to sell the car with the engine not running, it was a huge mass. If i knew your tips before, for sure that it would never could happen. By the way, i´ve never heard so good information about Subaru than yours. It´s a really masterpiece for whose are looking for an used model. Congrats for your excellent work! Keep going!

I have been working on Subaru engine since 2005, your comments are the best I have seen on TH-cam. You know your stuff.
i own a 2015 2.5 cvt with 173k miles and no issues. A lot of how problematic a vehicle is depends on how its driven. I drive mine like a family car. no racing, no offroading and no problems at all with the cvt or engine. I do change my oil at about 4k and keep a eye on my fluid levels. Forester still runs like its new for the miles. Bottom line don't beat the shit out of your car thinking its a racecar and it will last for years.
Agree but sometimes it doesn't matter how you drive there would be engineering mistakes which need to be fixed.

8:40 OIL CATCH CAN... I installed, greatly reduced oil consumption in my SH Forster.
I also run 5W-30 full synthetic oil in the warm weather, as it's listed as an option in the Subaru owner's manual.
I change the oil every 4,000 mi, or sooner if it looks really dirty and smells burnt.

I have a 2011 that had most of the engine replaced at 75K miles. At 119K it was found to have a blown head gasket, which was replaced at the 75K mark. Somewhere north off $4K to replace a head gasket through Subaru. Subaru of America offered me a $500 voucher for the work to be done. It's a great little car in the snow, especially when we lived in Colorado, but after this and other QC issues we've had I'd take a hard look at the RAV4 or the CRV.
Replacing ours with a RAV4 soon. Did not even look at the Subaru line-up after owning this one.
Sometimes is cheaper to replace the whole engine you can find it for around 1000$ to 1500$depend on miles and while you there change the timing belt and water pump wich is way easier with the engine out...and you will have no worries for at least 80k miles or more...buying another car is not always the best...you never know what you are into...and you loose more selling and buing than just replacing engine and keeping the car that you already knows what you did fix and what not👌🏻
I have a 2011 forester too and its been a total nightmare and money pit. Never again. Subaru in my opinion is poorly designed and are not reliable.
I’m a Honda guy, but the Subaru Forester and Outback are great cars. The forester is #1 for most satisfied and longest kept by consumers.

Until now it's 7 years without any issue.... Only one recalled on Breaking tail light. Every cars have recalled 2-5 in Honda, Toyota and Germany cars and American cars.

I came from a manual so giving up the control of shifting was already a change but she sure doesn't know what gear to be in some times, a little gas and nothing until a lag then vroom. Takes a bit of getting used to. Get better shifting from having it in sport mode but also if you dont drive like a maniac helps as well and really a forester is never a speed machine anything, far from any of the goals of this vehicle. Otherwise fantastic vehicle that can get into some decent off road.

it's shameful that subaru owners will give this company a pass for having head gasket issues for almost an entire decade. i owned a forester and outback, the forester consumed oil like a drunken sailor and subaru claimed 1 qt consumption every 1,000 miles is "normal" for a modern vehicle LOL.... and the outback was recalled numerous times and started falling apart before i even had 3,000 miles. i decided enough is enough and decided to buy a used toyota rav4 and it's been problem free ever since
Nope - I've been at war with them since my engine swap (exactly the same story you described). They were so lazy they literally put the old plugs into the new engine. Cylinder misfire almost immediately. On a new engine. Now dealing with a bad gasket. On a new engine. I'm not joking.
I can't wait to never drive a Subaru again for the rest of my life.
You would have to bring it to a Subaru dealership to do an oil consumption test to see if you qualify for a new engine from Subaru. They will cover it if it's qualified for a new one

I don't own a Subaru and probably never will. But I'm watching anyway because I usually learn something useful from this guy's videos.
Owned both 2011 and 2014 Foresters. Both used oil but I checked it regularly and added as needed. Found it to be no big deal. Had a transmission valve body failure in the 2014 at around 190,000 km. The Canadian service schedule calls for transmission fluid change every 100,000 km . Never had any head gasket issues. Have a 2017 Outback with 122,000 km . No problems so far.
My 2014 burns oil too, not an issue for the engine so long as you top it up once in a while. Only issue I’ve had with that is the burnt oil clogged the catalytic converter, something Subaru quoted me well over CAD$2000 to fix. Not worth it for mine since it’s up there in kilometres, but it makes pressing the throttle feel jolty. I assume as it gets worse I’ll start to lose power. Highly recommend anyone considering the 2014 model to check the cat, it’s not a cheap repair.

@@jessesmith2906 Just got your post( question) . You probably already have bought ( or not) the 2015 Forester. As for the transmission; has it had a fluid change? If so ,how many km or miles ago? I would get a Subaru owner friend to test drive with you. I had no indication of imminent failure. A lot of dash lights came on as well as some ‘ beeps”. Was able to drive to Subaru dealer ( 30 miles). Repair ( valve body) was done in a day. They had one in stock. First felt lucky but then wondered why they would stock such an expensive part if this wasn’t a common problem. Hope that answers your questions.

Great video! I have owned 14 Subarus and have experienced most of these common failures. Currently have an 01 Forester and my wife has an 09 Forester. Got both dirt cheap.....why??? Both had bad headgaskets. I did my own repairs removed the engines and replaced gaskets. Both drive fantastic !!

So in a nut shell, things to watch out for are,
External oil leaks, internal oil leaks, steering oil leaks, internal coolant leaks, oil to coolant leaks, coolant to oil leaks, oil in spark plugs, transmission failures, both CVT and standard automatics.
Not to mention front inner CV boots and worn/cracked suspension bushings.
All in all, among the most reliable cars on the road until 10 years or 120,000 kilometres.
Best enjoyed while new all the data suggests. (Still much more reliable and durable than the average European equivalent)
Yes, after a few years trade it in and start over. Money!
Don't forget rusted brake lines! Otherwise reliable!

Between my brother and I we have owned 4 subarus, including an older 2000 Impreza 2.5, 08 wrx, and late model 2015 forester XT, and 6cyl outback, all had no head casket issues....

I had a 2009 Forester that I kept for almost 10 years, only problem was slight oil consumption. I then bought a 2019 Ascent which I kept for almost 2 years, I had problems with the tailgate not opening fully all the time and the radio head unit had to be replaced. I now own a 2020 Forester Limited and I love it. I snow ski and they all have great traction.

I have a 2010 Forester. Small problems (mostly air conditioner problems) occur almost every year but no major problem until now.
Bought a Forester in 2014 in SA with no regrets, It did use oil though, and had to top up the oil every two months or so. Bought a new one a week ago with the sport sport trim. There are definite improvements and the 2.5 litre engine is noticeably more powerful in the newer version and the drive a bit smoother although the 2014 model was a very comfortable ride . I have become a massive Subaru fan and don't see myself switching brand any time soon
Wow - that comment on "life time" transmission fluids is the best way I've ever heard it put! This was a great video; Subaru has always been one of those brands were you tend to get highly polarized opinions one way or the other, and this explains in great detail how the truth is sort of in the middle, and reliability has a _lot_ to do with the specific model year and equipment choices. On the bit about oil changes, I always cringe at manufacturers continuing to recommend these "extended" oil change intervals as if it's some sort of positive selling point about their engines. Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are not - that is the simple truth that will never change. Even in my modern vehicles I stick to changing it ever 5000km or every year.
*I'm on my 2nd Subaru. First a 2013 Forester XT and now a 2021 Outback XT. One thing I've noticed about the Forester was the factory tune. It was so rough on cold start it would actually throw a misfire code. I had a code clearing tool and had to use it quite often. If you buy a Turbo Subaru change the oil every 3,000 miles. I don't care what anyone says. Turbos are hard on oil because of the heat. Every oil change I could see the oil was very dirty. That's fine but you have to change it and you will be OK.*
I noticed that on my non turbo 2011. I just let it run in the morning while I get ready.

@@xoxpriscillagot totaled in dec 2022 brakes never worked in snowy/icy conditions :( when I was driving at 35 to 40 mph. No safety feature worked before collision like collision assist or automatic ABS braking bla bla bla.. both air bags were deployed though. Bottom line is no matter what car you're driving crv or forester or tacoma, if the conditions are deadly your car can't save you. You just have to drive below 30 mph or even below 25 mph to make sure you don't lose traction. Yes the car had braking issues and I was going to take it to Subaru dealership but I guess I should have done that sooner
Also, my search tells me that forester models only starting 2020 onwards are most reliable. So I won't recommend anyone buying any forester model earlier than 2020.

Bought a 2015 forester with a manual transmission a month ago. So far I love it, guess I’ll just hope for the best and change the oil often. I only drive about 8k miles a year on average. Here in Vermont every other car is a forester. 🤷🏻♀️
I own a 2014 with the CVT and I change my oil every 4K. Great car but kinda wish I had gone for the turbo.
@@patdaveoneil we humm'ed and hawed about getting the turbo, or normal 2.5, but the seats in the Onyx were superior, and the power is a bit addictive, mpg around 26-30, depending...and the Onyx can haul a 3500 lbs trailer, the 2.5 only 2700 lbs. The 2.5 returns another 5mpg, than the Onyx. Thanks.
@@darrellborland119 I personally haven’t driven any of the turbo models but I definitely have to agree. The thing I really don’t like about the turbo is that it takes premium gas and on top of that, gets worse gas mileage. The power that the 2.5 non turbo puts out is adequate for most daily driving, but it really struggles getting up hills especially when it’s loaded with a bunch of people and gear. I’ve noticed quite a difference between when I have multiple passengers and when it’s just me in the car. If my next car is also a Subaru, I’ll strongly consider going for either the turbo or H6 (depending on the model of course).
@@patdaveoneil Patrick, the XT runs on regular gas....unlike the old 3.6 and much more efficient than older Suby's. A new XT runs close to 40K...not a good deal, unless you really want to pay the dEaler' full price. Thanks.
The XT takes regular fuel, and is significantly more powerful than the H-6, etc., and much better mpg. The only issue is the price...way too high. Thanks, and the afore-mentioned attrocious info center.
I picked up a used 2009 Forester X auto in Melbourne Australia, from a car wrecker of all places. Had 279,000km on it. Just gave it a oil change and new tyres.
Got a permit for it to drive to Nth Qld, some 3300km towing a 17 foot euro caravan it made it (was a 1150kg van so inside our legal tow requirements)
Made it on our shocking flood damaged roads also adding a extra 500km on the trip to bypass my usual route.
Not something I would ever recommend but the old 4 speed auto did it easy, would never try it with a CVT auto or any type.
Its only the 2.5 variant that has head gasket issues. The 2.0 litre petrol is the best engine. Im a UK 🇬🇧 guy who drives a 2011 diesel version with 98k miles on the clock and doesn't burn or leak oil and the same with water. I love it. I've only changed the usual stuff like brake discs and pads and tyres but that's it. Stay away from the 2.5 unless you drive like "Driving miss daisy"
How good is 2010 model fb20 engine
For reference: 2002 Forrest S. At 130,000 miles the valve gasket went, as did the oil pan gasket. At 160,000 head gasket started to externally leak, but very, very slowly. Around 190,000 miles the catalytic converter would cause the check engine light to go on, and off. I timed it right for three years to get past emissions. Around 225,000 miles the external HG leak had not changed, but a very small external water leak from the HG started. I used a couple stop seals, which worked pretty good. Just over 240,000 miles (yes, 80,000 miles with a small external HG oil leak!) the struts on the rear were shot, the alloy rims started to finally wear, and the water pump started to crap out. At this point, I'm considering the car near the end of it's life, and looking for a new(er) Subaru.

As always, great review of Subaru Foresters. I have 2nd generation Forester, and I love driving it. It’s so much fun. It feels confident on any surface. Subarus have their weak points, but if you take care of them, they will last.
I have a 2014 forester currently with 234K mostly freeway miles on it and, it still runs good. Early on a Subaru tech recommended that I use 5w-30 full synthetic oil in my hot southern climate and, to use a Wix filter instead of the blue Subaru filter which is basically a Fram. He also told me to change the oil on a shorter interval than Subaru suggested. I currently use about 3/4 to 1 quart in 5000 miles, it varies with the temperature. At it's current mileage I'm going to lower the interval to 4000 (I always change it myself). At freeway speed (70+ mhp) I average between 27 to 28.5 MPG and between 31.5 and 34 MPG when driving a 55 -60 MPH, depending on road conditions. I occasionally go off road so now I need new struts and lower control arms. I have more than gotten my money's worth out of this car and, it still wants to keep going. PS; I had the transmission fluid changed at about 160K miles (drain and refill, no flush). The fluid that came out didn't look too bad. I'll likely sell this one and get a new one next year.

Thank you Greg as always! Great video. I want to love Subaru, but these longstanding defects keep me away. The fuse that disables AWD is when you have to use the space saving spare. If left in AWD the computers try to compensate for the tire diameter mismatch and damage can be done.

As an about to be first time Subaru Forrester owner it was great learning more about the history of this car. It seems that all manufacturers go through development problems with some struggling more than others. I am glad that Subaru worked some of their challenges. I have always been a 3,000-4,000 mile interval oil change guy regardless of what the manufacture might say as I would rather do it more often then be sorry.

Some people are just stubborn. Porsche put the engine in the wrong location for the 911 and has spent many decades trying to engineer their way around it rather than relocate the engine.

I have a 2013 Forester x with manual transmission.just a plain jane. I just love it,So far I have 287000 kilometers on it.
A few other known issues to watch for on older Subarus: In cold weather fuel lines would leak - happened as late as 2005 on my Legacy GT Turbo, but no recall despite having the same issue as some of the WRX's, imprezas, etc. Also power steeing pump seems to be a common problem and is quite expensive to replace.
Just had to replace the fuel line on my 2005 forester this winter. Was leaking bad. I did manage to replace the hose without removing the intake, but it took me 2 days in -5 degree cold and it sucked. But got it done and no leaks.

I am the original owner of my 1984 Subaru Brat, changed the engine oil every 3,000 miles religiously and all of the other fluids (Coolant, Diff /Trans.Transfer Case Gears, Brake Fluid every 30k. Never had a problem. Only parts needing replacement over it lifetime so far other than normal wear parts (Tires & pulley belts) have been the water pump, thermostat and alternator. With over 200k miles, albeit not my daily driver since 1997, my '84 Brat remains in great mechanical condition and the original paint still las a nice luster and the interior has held up very well with no dash cracks or excessive seat wear. Yes, it has become a garage queen and Iit only goes to local car cruises and show anymore, but it was my first foray into owning a Subaru, the only brand I have owed ever since 1984 My 2006 Baja is my present daily driver and I am going for a new Baja to be offered by Subaru again soon since there is a compact pickup truck craze going on right now that Subaru needs to join.

My 2017 Forrester is a fantastic car. I have around 80,000 km and I've spent $200 to recharge the A/C and regular oil changes. Never been in the garage otherwise. I live in weather challenged Calgary, Alberta and never had winter tires and my Forrester has never let me down. It has been driven across Canada twice. I had a 2007 Forrester which was the best car I've ever owned. Just luck I guess.
My 01 Forester was rebuilt after being found in a flooded ditch.. got it free with salvage title...160.000 miles... Head gasket, timing belt, New struts all around.. plus plugs and had to epoxy the sun roof because it was on its roof when I towed it out of the water.. still don't who or what rolled it upside down and left there for about a year...I buffed the paint and steam cleaned the interior... been driving it 7 years change oil often...it has never used a drop ..it has 245,000 miles now and is running like a champ..I live on a steep drive so I do got front cv axles ordered and going to replace those..even though the clicks are minimal and only when I cut the wheel hard up the mountains... But that car is the best car I have ever owned in my whole life.. hands down.. plus if you can fix it your self...blown Subarus used to be dirt cheap back 10 years ago... but people are getting wise now..
I'll most likely get another gen 2 over 160.000 and blown ..to build a street style reliable project but if I can afford it maybe do a full swap with a BMW m5.. lol and lift my current Forester and make a camping ride.. take out the rear seats . Who knows...even if I was Rich .. the cars are so ugly and not engineered to be fixed..it's sad .. local mechanics are amazing and Smart ppl..who make good money..but won't touch anything after 2017ish .. so dealerships litterly are doing some evil things... New cars are made to have all kinds of simple things just pop up... sensors seat motor. A wheel alignment go loose in the first 40,000 miles..then the special tools and certification to even touch it...fix it for Penny's and 200$ hr labor... just to have a 50.000$ car go to the scrap yard .. after the value is nothing and it's not worth fixing...sad times for the auto industry.. other than fleet trucks and vans .. simple and made for work only with good resale and quick repairs ... cheers guys good luck.. diesels probably a 2500 ram or 250 Ford would be the only one vehicle that would be a good investment for work, resale and ever lasting.. my penis is a good size and a don't work rednecking keeping up with my good ol boys in construction or pull 10,000 lb trailers .... haha. I will own a Lincoln LS in my future most stylish and classy car from my life as a party kid with a pimp cruiser.... This is exactly what I needed in my quest to learn more about my 2011 Subaru Forester Fuel Consumption Test Recall, the Subaru service here totally messed up (on purpose because it would extend the warranty), and they were trying to get one over on me (a woman).
Before that, there was the driver's Airbag recall, they replaced, then the back middle seat recall, as it does not hold a baby seat. There will never be three baby seats in the back of my Subaru; would rather have three regular seat belts working instead.
The 4th Recall, (unless I forgot one) was the Passenger Seat Takata airbag recall. This had put my passengers at risk for 9 years. Shrapnel could have killed us. Luckily, I am a safe driver to avoid accidents for 60 years. Or, I have a guardian angel or both.
Mileage is only 37,000, and I keep up with maintenance and check oil and tire pressure as well. I bought a case of oil to always have some in the car to avoid the high cost of oil at a gas station. I got offered some pretty high amounts if I wanted to sell. Good to know.

I really like this channel but I have to say: we own a 2000 Subaru Forester with 170,000 miles and we never had to replace the head gaskets until a year ago. Never overheated. Just a few drops showing up on the garage floor over time. The car works great, pulls strongly, runs fine at 80 mph, no rust. Even the interior, with the exception of the driver-side carpeting, is completely intact and we haul around two dogs in it every day.

Just for clarity, our 2009 Forester had the single layer graphite-coated head gaskets which failed at around 120k miles.. I'm a Subaru fan and do my own work, so I pulled the engine, did the heads with new MLS gaskets, did a full seal kit. timing belt set with water pump, spark plugs, checked hoses,, all that stuff. I also replaced all of the fluids including rear diff, trans, brake fluid, power steering. Runs like new and should be good for another 150k miles. Total cost was around $900 for all OEM stuff. Car's in great shape so I think it was money and time well spent. And, yes, I change the oil religiously every 4000-5000 miles using good synth and only OEM oil filters.
When your hg failed did it leak just oil externally or both coolant and oil ?

my 1998 forester did over 276,000 kms without blowing a head gasket , regular servicing may be the reason , gave that to my daughter and bought a 2008 model , and after several years developed a few minor problems that no one could diagnose , so i traded it for a 2015 model in 2017 and its still going great . great cars !! only other choice would be a toyota rav 4 .

The spark plug grommets become hard and leak oil. Check for this. The AC evaporator is expensive to replace because it is hard to get at on the RHD version. The silver plastic interior elements are easily scuffed and can become discoloured. The manual gearbox shifter bush can fail. These things happen at high mileages. The Forester is an excellent car. I'm on my second and will probably get another. I love the roadholding, and the EJ253.

2011 with FB25 still running. Had to replace piston rings because of oil consumption. Did it myself because Subaru wanted 7000 usd for the fix. Used Mahle rings with their gap sizing instead of Subaru’s and so far so good. Still burns oil, like a quart every 4000mi. But that’s 8x better than before. I think boxers are meant to burn oils, just look at Porsche tolerances.
I would also mention that putting accessories like homelink and heated mirrors and remote start are easy to install on the 2019 forester as the wiring is already there to accommodate.

FB20 engine in 2011-2012 Forester SH (III) and Forester SJ (IV) consumes way less oil when you use 5W30 instead of 0W. It seems that 5W30 is actually better for engine, but they recommend 0W because of lower emissions. What's interesting, Subaru Europe actually recommends 5W30 (in countries like Poland). So 5W30 can't hurt your engine, it will actually decrease oil burning and carbon deposits related to burning oil.

I would get a 2.5i 4 cylinder Outback if it was my decision, especially since I actually bought a 2012 Outback with a 4 cylinder 2.5i engine. Not only do I find them a bit roomier, since they are Subaru's flagship model, they also get more focus from the company. It is a bit quieter than the forester too and the longer body but a shorter roof means that it's less likely to roll over in the event that you have to doge something. I also appreciate the Outback's length vs the Forester's height. It just means that if you want you could stick longer items into it which is handy if you want things like bikes or skis. They're both great vehicles, and I would try to go 2009 and up on both since that's when Subaru fixed the head gasket issue. I would say that both are awesome, and whichever you purchase I'm sure they'll be great reliable cars for years and years. Just get a 2009 and up, a 4cylinder, and a 2.5i engine. Whatever you don't buy a Subaru WRX, they are known for poor reliability and score abysmally in JDPower and Consumer Reports reliability score.

I have a 2017 forester with 98,000 miles. Only problem was ball joints replaced and the battery drain issue but had computer updated and hopefully that will fix it.
Second gen turbo forester is still the best looking forester, imo
