This is one of the best, non gimmicky, honest to goodness, real world, no b.s.reviews I have ever seen. Well done sir. I am considering one now, so this is helpful.
T-WRX Sir do you know why the reverse light is only present at the right side and not both sides? Coz we though own a forester xt 2.0 just wanted to know coz its ugly only one side lights its like your one head light is broken
Great review for one reason. This guy is NORMAL, its refreshing because he isn't playing up to the camera on some big ego trip like so many people do on TH-cam. Well done, and also for the very honest review of a fantastic car. This would make a great all rounder for me in the UK.
I live in Colorado, the land where EVERYONE has at least one Subie (literally, my town is only 500,000 people and we have the number one subie dealership in the country for volume), and after enough winters of driving my little front wheel drive nissan through a foot of snow, I picked up a 2017 Forester Pzev a few months ago, just the base model, and I love it. I go up to the mountains most weekends and I haven't had any trouble off roading on 4x4 trails, rides smooth on washboards and even smoother in town. I wanted a car that would do great in the snow and would be a decent family car once we have kids, and I think I found it. However, I will probably give it to my wife come winter and pick myself up an XT next year. Thanks for the review! I love this car.
My 2006 Ford Escape is starting to nickel and dime my husband and I. We only have a 3yo son so we don't need a 3rd row. I've been so clueless on what my next vehicle/family vehicle should be (my husband drives a 2016 Toyota Tundra-he's a Toyota guy). I love to drive, and I love sporty looking vehicles. I also dislike how almost all of the new crossovers are putting in skinny Windows reducing visibility which isn't cool with me. I thought only the Germans were keeping big square Windows, but now I realize Subaru is keeping them, too. I was just looking at the Outback, but like your wife I wasn't digging the design and squashed feeling. After watching your video, I have fallen in love with the XT, sight unseen. It's the perfect sporty design in my opinion, add in the turbo and all of the awesome features, I am sold! Thank you so much for your video!
Hey Chuck, just wanted to say thanks. Picked up a 2017 XT Touring today, and this episode was a big help in making the decision. Wanted to go with a white one, but my better half nixed it because of the saddle brown leather, so we ended up with Quartz Blue just like yours. I'm totally new to Subarus (been driving Mazdas for 10+ years), and I'm looking forward to your future videos!
Fantastic Review! Thanks for the time and energy you put into this, well done. I'm just breaking in my 2018 XT Touring Forester (at 1,100 miles now)...Thanks again for the great review!
Thanks for the review. We'd been looking and comparing in this size category. Many friends and family members drive Subarus which helped sway our opinion. We picked up our '17 2 months ago; the bronze with saddle interior. It'a a really great combo. It was just under 37K out the door and we we were able to negotiate several OEM added options such as roof cross bars and OEM trailer hitch. I'm a gearhead from way back and am loving the sport sharp setting and my wife is very happy in I drive. I didn't kill it while breaking in but didn't baby it either. I got some good info from your vid. Now for the bad news. Got rear-ended 2 weeks ago while stopped at a cross walk; new 17 year old driver. Not fun but no injuries. Long story short, about 7k in damage. It crushed the bumper down and pushed it and the trailer hitch forward and up into the trunk, probably a good 6 inches. Repair will involve massive re-do of body and floor; the whole rear of the car will come off. It's at a shop (in the north of Boston area) that specializes in Subarus. The owner/operator said he has done over 100 just like mine just in Foresters alone so I'm hoping for the best. It just sucks though because a car is only new once. Even though it was not my fault there was a ton of paper work plus many calls to both ins. companies. Anyway, can't wait to get it back and have more fun. Happy driving!
Nice buy! My Protuned 2015 XT was super fun and felt much quicker than my current WRX. The CVT is weird, but actually quick enough to make the car fun. You just have to get over the sound and actually feel that the car pulls well. You should flash the Cobb ots tune for fun and see if you notice any difference (about 3 or 4lbs more boost)
My wife has a 2009 xt turbo with 96k on the original turbo. Always use premium gas and oil changes every 5k with 70%hwy/30%city mileage. Great car and its a sling shot getting up and going
Thanks for the review. I've tried the forester XT but finally settle on the 3.6R Outback. Better interior, smoother engine (regular gas too), also felt more planted in corner and unlike your wife I just like the wagon look better. I also found that there's more rear room for the kids. Still the forester is very nice, enjoy!
I too test drove both the xt and 2.5i and we decided to order the xt touring with eyesight for added safety of course can't wait for it to arrive great video thanks.
Great review -- really enjoyed your insights and comments. I have a 2015 Outback (2.5i Ltd) and am thinking about trading to an Forester XT Touring just for a bit of extra fun. You added a "yes" vote for that decision.
Congratulations on hitting 100k views. I'm probably responsible for at least a dozen waiting for ours to come in. Great review it made me subscribe, keep up the great work.
Have the exact same car. About 4.5 thousand miles on it now. Love it so much. It was my first brand new car coming from a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. I need to use the paddle shifters more.
CVTs are pretty interesting. They have a lot of potential, but some manufacturers are trying to make them like more conventional automatics which kinda defeats the point... Nice video, the forester xt is definitely one of the more appealing vehicles in the small suv market
This is the best review on TH-cam for the 2017 Forester XT. Partly because you answered a lot of questions that viewers had. Details. Details. I am looking at replacing our Honda Odyssey minivan with a smaller SUV but I want something fun. Well, more fun than a minivan anyway. Forester XT is on my top 5 list. My question...Did you look at anything outside of Subaru? What are your thoughts vs other competition at this 38K price point? MY TOP 5 LIST Subaru Forester XT Touring Acura RDX AWD Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited VW Tiguan 2.0T 4Motion (older version) Kia Sorento SXV6 AWD I live in Florida so the only time the car will see snow is on trips to NC but I want the driving dynamics of AWD in the heavy rain and flooding we have here.
We looked at the Outback 3.6 and none of the others you mentioned. Our XT premium was right about $33k so the other things we considered were a little cheaper, CRV, Escape etc. But ultimately we liked the turbo option with the XT.
Ive got a friend with a 2015 Forester. Ive never driven it but i know he absolutely despises the CVT, however all other aspects of the car i thought were very nice. The seats are very comfortable, and there is for sure plenty of space for passangers and a LOT of luggage, especially for a "crossover." As long as you arent a car enthusiast, or it isnt your only car, I'd say it does its job very well.
I own a 2016 Outback 3.6R Limited. I have no problem at all with the CVT, even though I consider myself a car enthusiast. I have driven it on steep mountain grades, with 4 people in it and their luggage, and I have had no problem at all. I guess it comes down to knowing what you're getting. I wanted a family car that was spacious, smooth, and quiet, and that's exactly what the Outback is. Not every car can be a sports or a sporty car. Many people, professional car reviewers included, get into a family car and expect it to perform like a different type of car.
I felt I was pretty middle ground in this review. Understood why I bought the car and what it was for, never really took too much away from it. I know a lot of people that consider this car as a potential replacement to one of their "sporty cars" now that they have a family. I don't want those people getting the wrong impression. If you want a manual driving experience a CVT with paddle shifters will not satisfy that desire. It's a great car and we are enjoying it, glad you like your outback.
T-WRX point well taken. I was just making a general statement and used your platform; it wasn't intended to be personal. Yes, you were neutral in the review. Keep them coming, please.
I agree sometimes people are too critical of a car based on criteria that the car is not meant to fill. Why won't this Honda Odyssey lap the nurburgring under 8 mins!
Here in 2022! Great review and very well rounded presentation. I am comparing the new 2022 Forester with some used and this is a big help. Thinking the turbo in the earlier ones like yours may tip the scale.
Thanks for the video and review. Honest and straightforward. I just ordered my '17 XT Premium and I couldn't be more excited. I really wanted to roll with the WRX but with no hatchback option for '17 or '18... naaa. I needed a little cargo space. Again, thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Sweet. I do have a question... with your history of owning turbo charged vehicles, is there anything in the maintenance of them that you would recommend or highlight (i.e. oil change frequency...etc.)?
I think it's important to follow the manufacturers recommendations. Subaru recommends 6k intervals for the XT, stick with that or more often, don't try and push the limits. I do it more often on my STI. I usually go 3-5k between changes on it. Also always use premium fuel as recommended by Subaru. Subaru has been really good to me in the past when anything has gone wrong too, so I believe they'd help you out as long as there is no abuse going on!
Thanks for the review. I'm 6'5 as well, just test drove the Forester 2.5i yesterday. Will definitely look towards the turbo. Was considering the Outback but I'm also on the fence when it comes to the "wagony look" lol.
Nice! I've been going through your videos since I just put a deposit down for a 2017 STI (as a replacement for my 2013 Focus ST). Funny seeing that your wife has the XT! My wife actually has the 2015 Forester XT Touring (Quartz Blue) as well. The sunroof is indeed awesome, and having the eyesight/adaptive cruise control has been great to have on our family road trips. The backseat room is also great for our 2yr old. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on your channel since we'll have similar garages soon and it seems like we're in similar situations. Thanks for the videos!
Hey! Great Video! Especially thanks for all the listings of the gear you use and I even clicked on the Subaru links as to what cool stuff is available. I have never owned s Subaru and I'm 6'4" and didn't figure I would fit! Thanks for including your height. I fit in VW's and not much else in the world of small cars and even mid size do I fit!!!! I've driven VW's most my life but I may have to check out the WRX over a Golf R. Again thanks for the work of adding all those links... wish more people would go to the trouble of doing that. New subscriber now!
Just wanted to say that the XT doesn't have a deviated stitching option. They are all the same color, so it's just contrast stitching. As an '17 FXT owner since August, I think your review was great. I've driven an STi, and my husband's '15 WRX (6MT). The FXT is way more similar to the WRX. Of course it isn't the same, but it's much more similar than jumping from an STi into the FXT. Nice review!
I have been doing a lot of research because my 2001 Outback is at its end so thank you so much for this video and for being honest with it! I am definitely getting one now thank you so much and keep up the hard work! 💜
Ended up grabbing a nice used 2014 Subaru Forester XT touring model, had all the features I wanted. Definitely glad I went with the XT instead of the 2.5i. Considering my last car was a 2011 Camry I'm not really losing that much in MPG but gaining a bunch of horsepower. This is my first Subaru. Looking forward to the driving experience.
Oh nice, excellent choice! The dealer had the White on saddle in the same spec as ours and it looked really good! Once again I tried to convince my wife of the white or silver, but she really liked the blue! Congrats on the new car man, I hope the wait doesn't kill you!
Picked up an 18 Saturday, not sure I have memory seats. Lol. Not the same as my 15 Outback when it comes to that button layout. Just happy with the stuff I got out of the door. The comment on the turbo whistle is spot on, it made me feel like I was in my first car being 16 again. Going from a 97 saab 900se to a 13 malibu to a altima -_- traded in for the 18 xt. It feels like home.
Good vid Chuck! I just subscribed, I've watched most of your other vids as well and found them to be pretty helpful and your opinions seem to be spot on to what I've observed too! Now to the point... We have an eerily similar timeline... I also just happen to be 6'5" but a bit older than you. .... I had a 2009 STI 5 door, and traded it in on a 2015 STI last year. We bought a 2016 XT for the family earlier this year as well. I put a Nameless catback with 5" cans on my 2015 and removed the intake noise thingy when I put my Cobb intake on. (runs great and make some nice noise) Sounds a lot like yours. I take my Suby and my CBR954 to track days and really enjoy the hell out of them. I look forward to seeing the M3 on the track and maybe even seeing you out there some time! Keep it up!
Haha wow that is weird man! I've heard similar stories from a few others too, very strange but I suppose once the Subaru bug bites you just keep buying them. I need to button up a few more things and the M3 will be ready to roll!
I have a 2015 XT with eyesight. My friend it is fast! I had a BMW1 X1 and a WRX STI before. This one it is a good balance between performance, safety and cargo. Nothing is perfect my model seats are not confortable (leather) for long trips. Kind of hard and not too much side support. Radio is wonderful (harman and Kardon)
Great review...I'm tossing the idea back and forth about getting either forester or outback... I do like that the forester has a turbo... more possible for upgrades than the outback although I notice they do make a small lift kit for outback that looks stellar in my opinion...
Great review Chuck! I am looking at the Forester and love what I see. The one niggle for me is that the sunroof does not have a tilt position like the Outback (and most other vehicles for that matter). It is not a deal killer for me but I use it all the time in my Acura and I think I will miss it.
Thanks ted! Yeah I hear you on the sunroof, its nice to vent it a little bit when needed. I think the bigger gripe for me is it comes from the factory with what seems like zero tint on it, so its super bright if you have the panel slid back. I don't think we've even used it once yet!
Nice choice of vehicles! I have a 2016 STi and just got my wife a 2017 Forester XT Premium. So far we love the XT, can't wait to get past the 1000 mile break-in!
Thank you for the review. Much helpful and very informative. Getting my XT tonight....bringing back my 2015 WRX though....broken heart, but no choice. I hope the turbo will be enough to slightly compensate for the loss of my WRX.
I wish Subaru would offer a choice of interior colors - if you choose some exterior colors you can only get light colors or brown or tan. Somewhat limits what color exterior you might go with if you prefer certain interior colors. I had a '13 Outback Limited - loved it, now have a '15 XV Crosstrek for my daughter and love that one as well. Great cars. Insightful overview - thanks!
Yeah I agree! At least they added the saddle brown option, but they are so restrictive, you pick this color you basically get stuck with whatever interior it comes with. Luckily we liked the blue on black combo or silver on black combo so it was all good, but I hear you on the better options point!
Just bought the 2018 premium XT. Only dislike is the section of the door that holds the window buttons. It's right in the way of my left knee....besides that... best car I have ever owned all around.
Thank you for the great video. JUST started contemplating the Forester XT. Currently driving a 16' WRX which I have done tons of vids myself on my channel and just love it but am missing some of the room I had in my 13' Outback. The Forester XT seems like it'd give me best of both worlds (some fun speed and more room). I also am 6'5" but bigger (and more rounder, lol) than you. I imagine I'd be ok in this car. Might have to get out and see one at a dealer. I'd probably want to go top of the line with it as well with the Touring fully loaded. Thanks again, just a great video.
Hi, you mention this car has very good insulation and sound proof. At this video 5:16, under the steering wheel, I believe I can see through to outside, not sure if you saw it?
So "very good insulation" is an over statement, "better than the previous model" is more accurate. That being said I can assure you there is no hole under the dash to the outside. Might have been a light or something you were seeing.
How's the interior noise level? Road noise? Wind noise? Level of road noise while on highway? Level of road noise while going over rough pavement? Squeaks, rattles? How's the overall refinement of the suspension, is it able to absorb small road imperfections? Is it able to absorb large road imperfections?
Very impressed with the suspension so far. Seems very supple and refined for an awd small SUV. Glides over small imperfections well, large imperfections it stays composed as well. Road noise is quieter than the 2016 but definitely not a luxury car standard. The 2017 got thicker glass and more sound insulation. No squeaks/rattles as of yet. Only 1200 miles on the clock. Hope that helps!
I have the same car with about 9k miles now, and I’ve averaged the same mileage you have! (21.9). It surprises me that this is lower than the advertised city mileage, given that I averaged 31mpg in my Subaru BRZ over thousands of miles as well
Thank you so much for the video. I watched this three times just before and after I ordered my XT. Just got a question about the tires, did yours come with the bridgestone dueler H/L 400? I saw a lot of people complaining about this for its bad performance in light snow or slippery conditions. Have you experienced any of these problems?
Thanks for a great video. I just bought a 2017 Forester touring from Vroom. I haven’t got the car yet, but a Subaru is going to be different from my ‘05 Honda Element that I bought new. I’m excited to see if I can fit my bicycle inside with the seat folded down. I’m probably going to add a hitch and will need to spend $$$ on a second key. BTW, I live in SE Virginia.
Great vid! Subscribed! Picked up my 2017 FXT Premium over the weekend for the same reasons. Wanted a sporty family car for the wifey and we love it! Any recommendations on smaller mods to get more out of the 2.0. Ideally mods that wont drive too much attention on the wifes end, but enough for me to notice when I want to get after it a little bit? Looking for vendors/sites/etc. Thanks! Great video!
I have a Cobb Accessport and run 93 octane. I hit 0-60 in 5.3 seconds with snow tires. The Accessport has 91 economy, 91 performance, and 93 performance tunes. Even with the 93 performance tune, if you have a significant other who drives in Intelligent mode, they may not even notice the tune. In Sport and Sport # modes it makes a big difference. I also have a Whiteline heavy duty adjustable rear sway bar and front strut tower brace. Some people lower their Foresters to get better handling, but I like the high ground clearance. The two mods I made almost eliminate body roll.
Very well done seemingly "unbiased" review. One gripe though Chuck, after more hours behind the wheel do you still honestly find those seats comfortable? Love my 2018 XT, and to be honest your reviews helped me buy it. Just wish they had made their seats comfortable for once! I'll gladly spend $1200 on STI or WRX seats to alleviate future back problems.
My wife and I are using a similar family setup, I have a 16 WRX premium and she drives a 14 Forester premium. I wish I had considered the XT because the standard forester 2.5 4 cylinder feels like it has NO power in comparison. My wife wanted to be higher so the outback was out, I have to say the visibility in both cars is impressive coming from a Tacoma. Video request: STi vs XT road test
Haha noted I'll try to come up with a good video. But yeah the XT is definitely nice over the base 2.5i, but honestly I we probably could have lived with the 2.5i seeing that we lived with the slowness of the Hyundai Tucson for like 6 years!
nice car! -- i have a 2001 forester gt turbo 4 cams and 177 bhp = i put some go faster bits and wow 201.000 klm still runs to over 220 kph = more smiles per miles.
Hey, get an AOS (Crawford or IAG both have coolant redirect lines to keep moisture out of your crank case) while the car is still new, it will prolong the life of your intake valves a bit.
for 2017 headlamps were improved from a poor rating(IIHS) on the 2016 Forester to "acceptable" for yours. Do you like the LED's headlamps at night ? Enough throw? Scared of deer at night lol.
The LED headlights are great, I didn't try the lower trim headlights, but the LED setup is awesome. I really like it. They are responsive to the steering as well!
Very informative review. We have the 2016 BMW X1 and we are thinking this would make an excellent second vehicle. As far as the seats; you commented they fit your 6'5" frame well, but how would they do with a thicker frame, especially across the chest? I have a 53" chest and the X1 seats are a little too narrow to be comfortable. Again, great review. Its nice to see an actual user review rather than a dealer talk. Thanks.
The seats are fairly wide, not much bolstering, (which is good or bad depending on who you ask). My father in law is a big dude, 6'4" not sure chest size, but he's probably close to a 50" and he remarked how comfortable he thought the seats were!
I drove the 3.6R outback, its less top heavy feeling that the forester in my mind, but I liked the peppiness of the turbo 4. The big 6 has power but didn't really feel that eager to me.
Cool channel, man. Re; the second gear roller - you've probably found out by now that there's a lot more power beyond 4k RPMs! I read your comment below about the set bolstering; do you know if Subaru added more to the seat bottom in the '17? Prior years were pretty flat...
It's still pretty flat but there is a little bolstering. That being said I didn't really compare it to the 16's on the lot, I would have had I known it was such an annoyance for people!
This car is really fuel efficient for its size, but what I noticed is that if you push a bit more throttle in city driving then advantages seems to disappear from regular geared automatic. So, if you planning to drive it with sudden acceleration then go for stepped gear transmissions.
I currently lease a '16 WRX that I got in May. Since than there's been a issue with the rear calipers, that for some reason the engineers can't figure out how to fix. There's always a "rattle" sound every time I go over road imperfections. I've been to the service department so much, I'm like family. So dealing with Subaru corporate, they may take the car back, so I'm seriously thinking about the XT. I'm a little disappointed though because I always wanted a WRX. I live in NYC, so the roads are very shitty around here, and the fact the XT is a little more refined may be better, plus it does have the Turbo, so I'll have a little pick up. Thanks for the detailed video, it's a nice car. I have some thinking to do.
Interesting, so Subaru can't figure out what is up with the calipers? Did they trying replacing them? I've not heard of that issue from my WRX buddies. Anyway the XT is great, but I do love my STI!
My mother, on my recommendation, got a 2015 XT and she loves it. I was impressed with it after I drove it as well. 2017 interior and lighting changes look to be really nice upgrades. Like that they added a mph indicator between the gauges. I found the analog speedo difficult to read at a glance. The CVT is not bad at all in Sport and Sport# and that 2.0 DIT is surprisingly responsive and torquey for such a small motor. lt actually feels quicker now that the motor is broken in and the chassis is still tight with no rattles. Great vehicle overall. Does the CVT still default to intelligent mode until the motor is warmed up? That was the only thing that annoyed me.
Ours defaults to I mode every time you start it back up. The STI will remember what mode you put it in and keep it there, the XT always goes back to I mode. In our case its a good thing because my wife always drives it in I mode and when I drive it a few times a week I just pop it in sport and dont have to remember to put it back. But the STI lives in sport mode every day!
Didn't know you got one. We picked up the top of the line limited with tech model here in Canada. Got her on August 16th. Loved your roof rack video too. Any other plans?
Hello Chuck, I’m currently driving a 2005 Legacy GT wagon with MT and after 123,000 mi it still puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. My new Forester XT Touring will be here before the end of the month, both have about the same HP and torque. I’m wondering how much of a difference in performance I’ll notice with the CVT?
I'm not sure performance wise how it effects the car. But its certainly less "fun" than a MT if you are a MT person. This is my wife's daily and I drive it around in the evenings/weekends when we go out. I don't think I'd get it as my primary source of transportation because I'm a guy who wants to drive the STI everyday. That being said it is a fun car to drive, it's super practical, and as an addition to my STI its awesome!
great review dude! i am a 2009 forester 2.5x owner. after this many years with the forester and having tried the 2016 model i personally feel subaru hasn't made enough refinement to the engine and transmission as well as interior and exterior design for me to buy another subaru. the boxer engine is too unrefined for me (2.5x)...the damn thing is loud and shakes the entire car...the shifting gets easily "confused" in abrupt acceleration and deceleration scenarios...yea...time for a toyota or honda next time. thanks for the review
i agree with you. i have a 2010 SFor Premium. After looking at all the years and models from 2013 to 2017, very little has changed and i must say, The Subaru Forester is just boring now....nothing "new" for me to buy it and be excited about....
Yeah I hear you, I think in the reasonably priced small SUV market having an option that's not a 170ish hp 4 cylinder is unique which is why I was interested. The turbo version made it interesting to me!
+T-WRX if I do get another Forested(newer year) I'll definitely will be getting the turbo...but as of now, I'm praying Subaru will change its style in 2019/2020 year model
Good review, any chance you test drove a Mazda CX5? Considering both these vehicles but thought the Mazda might be a better driver with the 6speed, reputation for driving and regular gas while really liking the space, visibility and great AWD of the Subie. Any thoughts?
My buddy actually has a CX5, its a great car, drives really well. The main thing that turned me away is that it like most other small SUV's does not have the more powerful engine option. 185hp is your only choice, it'll move the car around but its not going to be speedy.
I think what's going on that the oem subaru coolant just evaporates quite quickly and adding distilled water only speeds it up, I think the best thing to do is either add concentrated Subaru coolant or their 50/50 mix. I bought some 50/50 mix and it did evaporate in about 3 months. but very little did ! so I don't think our engines are "eating" any !
I'm trying to convince myself into getting an XT over the 2.5 touring for my wife. I bought my mom an 11 2.5 a few years ago and she still loves it. I bought my wife an 05 XT then we traded it for an 11 WRX hatch but sold it because of the attention ( and tickets ) sold it for that reason. Got a month left to decide.
Ever since Toyota discontinued their V6 in their CUV segment, there hasn't been much of Reliable, Fun, Safe vehicle where I live. Thank Heavens for the XT.
Hi, nice review! I have a 2010 aspirated Forester that I want to change for the XT. However, I recently checked the Mazda CX5 and heard nice things about how it handles. Do you have an opinion on the mazda
I actually really like the Mazda exterior styling and I thought the interior was nice. But the lack of engine options is what turned me away. I liked the turbo option on the forester. I think the escape ecoboost is the only similar engine option!
Great video first time here. I’m definitely not a fan of the premium gas. But seems like the trend for vehicles are going to turbos with cvts hopefully they become super reliable
Apparently not, the engineer from the area couldn't fix the problem, so he has to wait for the engineers from Subaru to come up with a fix. In the meantime it's been discussed if I would keep the car and deal with the noise, or give it back. If that's the case I'll give the car back and maybe upgrade to the WRX limited. I currently have the Premium. Let them have the car and they can tear it apart and have fun with it. I think it's a factory issue.
This is one of the best, non gimmicky, honest to goodness, real world, no b.s.reviews I have ever seen. Well done sir. I am considering one now, so this is helpful.
Hey man, I really appreciate the kind words! Glad this video helped you out, let me know if you have any other questions!
T-WRX thanks!
T-WRX Sir do you know why the reverse light is only present at the right side and not both sides? Coz we though own a forester xt 2.0 just wanted to know coz its ugly only one side lights its like your one head light is broken
Agree. No bullshit music. No nonsense
Great review for one reason. This guy is NORMAL, its refreshing because he isn't playing up to the camera on some big ego trip like so many people do on TH-cam. Well done, and also for the very honest review of a fantastic car. This would make a great all rounder for me in the UK.

Thanks for the review! I love this car.
Good to hear it man! I want to visit Colorado one day!
Hit me up if you're ever in the neighborhood, we'll go foresting!
Wow super nice comments! I genuinely appreciate you checking out the video!
Congrats man! Enjoy the new ride!
Dude, I WISH the Blue/Red Forester XTs came with a saddle brown interior. The black gets so hot in summer, and looks dirty easier.
Fantastic Review! Thanks for the time and energy you put into this, well done. I'm just breaking in my 2018 XT Touring Forester (at 1,100 miles now)...Thanks again for the great review!
honestly, the best real user review
Thanks man, I appreciate that!
Awesome review! We ended up getting the 2017 XT Touring and it is awesome. White with brown leather interior. Our first Subie!!!
Nice! The brown leather was a really upscale look! I liked the brown on white as well, but my wife really liked the blue!
Noice! Yeah this may stay stock ECU wise for a while, until I can 100% guarantee my wife remembers to use premium!
Yeah all of those are great points! I tried to sway her to the outback but had no luck so I embraced the XT!
I too test drove both the xt and 2.5i and we decided to order the xt touring with eyesight for added safety of course can't wait for it to arrive great video thanks.
Nice! You won't regret it!
Haha nice! Thanks man I appreciate the support!
Have the exact same car. About 4.5 thousand miles on it now. Love it so much. It was my first brand new car coming from a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. I need to use the paddle shifters more.
Nice! I don't use the paddles much either!
CVTs are pretty interesting. They have a lot of potential, but some manufacturers are trying to make them like more conventional automatics which kinda defeats the point... Nice video, the forester xt is definitely one of the more appealing vehicles in the small suv market
Thanks man! Yeah I'm sort of "meh" about the CVT for now, I don't hate it and I don't love it. It is ok for our needs.
I get the appeal.... Just wish that it wasn't the only choice.
I just bought a 2018 pretty much identical to your 2017 in part due to your great reviews on the car. Thank you!
Awesome review. I'm 6'4 and was concerned with headroom, but you answered all my questions and some I didn't think about. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Subscribed because you answered every single question asked!!! Good tour of your wife's new wheels too :)
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed the video!
MY TOP 5 LIST
Subaru Forester XT Touring
Acura RDX AWD
Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited
VW Tiguan 2.0T 4Motion (older version)
Kia Sorento SXV6 AWD
I live in Florida so the only time the car will see snow is on trips to NC but I want the driving dynamics of AWD in the heavy rain and flooding we have here.
We looked at the Outback 3.6 and none of the others you mentioned. Our XT premium was right about $33k so the other things we considered were a little cheaper, CRV, Escape etc. But ultimately we liked the turbo option with the XT.
I'm so glad I found your channel..hoping to bring one home tonight!
Congrats on the new car!
Yeah as the family car its definitely a nice choice. I don't think it'd be my daily driver ever, but its definitely come a long way!
Thanks for watching Chris! You'll enjoy the XT its a great car!
I have a 14 forester xt, 16 sti and enjoy both. Long trips to the cottage forester has been amazing. Still very quick.
Noice! Great minds think alike! I'm excited to road trip in the Forester and see how it does!
T-WRX
Eyesight and the X-mode have come in handy many times.
Thanks for the review. I'm 6'5 as well, just test drove the Forester 2.5i yesterday. Will definitely look towards the turbo. Was considering the Outback but I'm also on the fence when it comes to the "wagony look" lol.
Turbo is worth it in my opinion! No regrets with the forester vs. the outback so far!
Nice! Congrats on the soon to be STI, sounds like we are on the same life path lol. I appreciate you checking out the videos!
Thank you!
Yeah man the 2014 was still a good year! Glad you are enjoying it!
Option 34, White XT touring, Brown saddle leather, navigation and eyesight.
It feels like home.
i have a 2016 forester limited and seeing this version of the forester makes me so jealous!
Gill Bates! Sick user name!
Haha thank you
Most honest awesome car review I've ever seen. Thanks
Thank you man!
Great video! Impressed that you were able to continuously speak without being uninformative.
Thanks dude! I really appreciate that!
Very cool video and very informative! I drive an STI and I was always curious about the Forester XT. Thanks for doing a review on that car.
Thx for the video review - could you post a night video reviewing how the new LED turning headlights perform?
I'll see what I can do!
x2! I would love to see that too
Great review dude! I'm 6.4 - and I'm debating between the cx5 and Forester...And the Forester seems like it will fit me the best.
CX-5 Is a great car too, my buddy has one. Try them both on and see what you like!
I'm 6'3" and I did the same thing, set up drivers seat and checked how much room I had behind me .
Haha must be a tall guy thing! It comes from people always complaining about sitting behind me!
Agreed, we are loving ours so far!
If they got rid of the sunroof, they'd probably lower the roofline - not raise the interior shell. But I love it.
Yeah you are probably right, a boy can dream!
Great review...I'm tossing the idea back and forth about getting either forester or outback... I do like that the forester has a turbo... more possible for upgrades than the outback although I notice they do make a small lift kit for outback that looks stellar in my opinion...
The outback is a great car as well! But we are loving the forester so far! No regrets!
Good review, this was an MT SUV of the year some time back, sounds like the major improvement is the interior
Yep interior and general amenities. Led headlights, power tailgate, torque vectoring etc. we love it so far!
Good video, ordered mine 3 weeks ago, the wait will be long!
Noice! What specs did you go with?
It looks so much like a chrome car in this light... Great feedback on the review BTW. Do more.
Thanks Codi! Pumped for next month!
Gonna be awesome!
Good work chuck.....Geez the last time I came across a Chuck in the land down under was on "My three sons" :)
Haha! Thanks man!
Nice choice of vehicles! I have a 2016 STi and just got my wife a 2017 Forester XT Premium. So far we love the XT, can't wait to get past the 1000 mile break-in!
No way man! We are like the same person!
Thank you for the review. Much helpful and very informative. Getting my XT tonight....bringing back my 2015 WRX though....broken heart, but no choice. I hope the turbo will be enough to slightly compensate for the loss of my WRX.
You'll probably miss the WRX but the XT has been a great car!
just bought one and i love it!
Nice! I'll be doing our 1 year review shortly!
Still driving 2018 Subaru Forester XT Touring, just passed 20K miles, did not drive it a lot... plan to keep it for another 2 years.
I really appreciate the kind words, glad I could help out!
NICE!!!!CONGRATS CHUCK!!!!!!
Thanks dude!
We have the same tires but I've not yet driven them in snow. It's winter here so I'll let you guys know when we try it out.
It blows my mind that they didn't offer a manual transmission for this trim. If they offered it, would you get it over the cvt?
He probably wouldn't cause his wife drives it too and I don't think she knows how to drive stick.
Terrill knows what's up. If it was my daily it'd be manual for sure. But it's my wife's commuter so it'd be auto/cavy either way!
It's a shame. Combination of EPA requirements on efficiency and general lack of interest in the manuals. Soon they will all be gone.
Congrats on the new XT. Subie Speed is a good site for Forster parts.
www.subispeed.com/2014-subaru-forester
Terrill Cooke cool thanks bud!
Well done! Love the cvt description
Thanks man! Appreciate you checking out the video!
Nice man!
Hey, get an AOS (Crawford or IAG both have coolant redirect lines to keep moisture out of your crank case) while the car is still new, it will prolong the life of your intake valves a bit.
I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the tip!
for 2017 headlamps were improved from a poor rating(IIHS) on the 2016 Forester to "acceptable" for yours. Do you like the LED's headlamps at night ? Enough throw? Scared of deer at night lol.
The LED headlights are great, I didn't try the lower trim headlights, but the LED setup is awesome. I really like it. They are responsive to the steering as well!
Came back to this vid to say congratz on 4k subs!!
Thanks man! Keeps on chugging!
Good review very honest and clear
Thanks Juan! I appreciate you checking it out!
Good review. How did the driving dynamics of the Forester compare with the Outback? Would you've opted for the 3.6 Outback or the 2.5?
I drove the 3.6R outback, its less top heavy feeling that the forester in my mind, but I liked the peppiness of the turbo 4. The big 6 has power but didn't really feel that eager to me.
Nice review. Thanks. Can you do another review that focuses on demoing the turbo and the paddle shifters?
Thanks man! I'll see what I can do!
Thanks
Best ever ! especially the part about the car space. thumb up and followed~ gooooooood job! T
thee suspension lookes very well tuned. I have the crosstrek and mad bouncy, and you can view that in the videos.
The suspension is pretty smooth for a Subaru!
That being said I didn't really compare it to the 16's on the lot, I would have had I known it was such an annoyance for people!
very beautiful ..... even just missing the inside of the ceiling is black color ..... the same STI .....
I do like the black ceiling in my sti!
here in Brazil also only comes with black sti
This car is really fuel efficient for its size, but what I noticed is that if you push a bit more throttle in city driving then advantages seems to disappear from regular geared automatic. So, if you planning to drive it with sudden acceleration then go for stepped gear transmissions.
Yeah as with most turbo cars, the more you stay in boost the worse your mileage will get! Thanks for watching!
I've done 7.6l/100km on highway and around 13l/100km in city.
Almost got the 2017 Forester XT, went with the Outback 3.6R instead. Next on the list is the STI.
Outback 3.6R is a great car as well. I tried but the wife resisted the outback!
My 2014 always remembers last used mode, unless I use X-Mode. Only then it defaults back to I when I disable it...
Checking the Forrester and Outback tomorrow. Wish me luck
Excellent! Which do you prefer?
The Outback.
Didn't know you got one. We picked up the top of the line limited with tech model here in Canada. Got her on August 16th. Loved your roof rack video too. Any other plans?
Nice! I've got some things in the works, LED fogs/interior lights, roof cargo basket etc!
Hello Chuck, I’m currently driving a 2005 Legacy GT wagon with MT and after 123,000 mi it still puts a smile on my face every time I get
behind the wheel.
Nice review! I'm thinking of buying one. How's the body roll on corners?
Thanks man! Body roll is noticeable but not that bad for an SUV, the XT has a bit sportier suspension!
great review dude! i am a 2009 forester 2.5x owner. after this many years with the forester and having tried the 2016 model i personally feel subaru hasn't made enough refinement to the engine and transmission as well as interior and exterior design for me to buy another subaru. the boxer engine is too unrefined for me (2.5x)...the damn thing is loud and shakes the entire car...the shifting gets easily "confused" in abrupt acceleration and deceleration scenarios...yea...time for a toyota or honda next time. thanks for the review
i agree with you. i have a 2010 SFor Premium.
185hp is your only choice, it'll move the car around but its not going to be speedy.
make sure you check the overflow coolant level Subaru tends to run them low from the factory...
Will do, I've been watching LastHumansGarage over the past week or so and I saw the same issue.
Yeah, I told him about it.
+cobra454tim excellent, great tip! I'll check both cars soon!
I recently traded in my 2016 wrx premium for 2018 forester xt touring brown color, it’s not wrx but I really love it!
XT is well worth it in my eyes! The extra 80hp and sportier trim goes a long way!
Ever since Toyota discontinued their V6 in their CUV segment, there hasn't been much of Reliable, Fun, Safe vehicle where I live. Thank Heavens for the XT.
Sweet looking color. I know you're going to do something about the chrome around the fog lights.
Might plastidip it!
Thanks for the video, exactly what I was looking for!
No worries man, let me know if you have any other questions!
If you take your foot off the throttle pedal as you would with a manual between gears in manual mode it up shifts a lot better.
