    #1 Use BOTH of your hiking poles, especially downhill. Trauma can be cumulative. #2 Do fewer miles early in a hike. 10 miles is plenty first day, first three days. Slow in the beginning means slow! You had similar problems from overhiking on the PCT, remember?

    Some unasked advice: My guess would be it may not be your insoles. 25 miles day after day is a lot. It could be too much. Allow a next hike to have some shorter days. Anyway. Goodluck recovering. Things will be fine!

    • @StarsAndSolitude
      @StarsAndSolitude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a valid comment but Darwin confirmed on another video he forgot to put his specialist insoles in which is usually what he uses. Sometimes that's all it takes and it's a bummer

    • @DarwinOnthetrail
      @DarwinOnthetrail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely unasked advice... I was Doing a Fast Pack attempt of the trail, which is the whole reason for going fast & doing big days. Also... 25 miles a day is what I usually hike on most trails while NOT trying to fast pack. It was all about a bad set of insoles & not having the support I needed.

    You made the right choice. I was actually really nervous for you when you started out at 24 miles/day which is pretty much how people seem to hurt themselves on nearly every thru hike as I'm sure you know far better than me. You know your body far better than I do though. One question - what do you think caused the tear? I know you said insoles, but how did you narrow that down? Couldn't it have been a bad trip or sloppy downhill? Just plain bad luck? I ask because I've had the same injury and I straight up don't know why I got it.
    Know that you are still an inspiration (I literally started hiking because of you and Homemade Wanderlust) and I wish you the best! I'll be following along on the next hike!

    Just a thought, maybe consider taking 2 pairs of insoles and swapping them out each evening. That way both pairs get even wear throughout the entirety of the hike. If one pair is defective you'll notice sooner rather than later because of the daily comparison, and get a new pair at a resupply. Thanks for sharing your journey and best of luck on your next adventure.

    Hey Darwin and Chat. I'm about to do my first through hike (I guess thats what it is) The uinta highline trail, 105ish miles. I know its nothing like the PCT or some of the stuff you guys tackle, but To me it will be huge =) HOW does one avoid injuries? I'm scared to start, only because I dont want to get injured. I LOVE the outdoors and that is what I do on my own channel, but shameless self plug asside, I was in the infantry, and walked a lot, but that was in 2010-2014, since then I've never done more than about 12+6 miles in a single week, and nothing in the past 2 years (damn you covid!) anyway, i'd love to know what I can do to avoid injuring myself. THANK YOU!!!

    Darwin, do you ever feel or believe that being "ultra light" causes injury? We all know being overloaded causes injury. But I am begging to wonder if being "too light" also poses problems for backpackers.
    The move to become lighter allows us to travel farther/faster/longer, but maybe the equipment itself isn't really durable enough to give our body the protection this type of travel demands. For instance: when on the AT I hiked with a guy who was "ultra light" and he wore a pair of shoes that were lighter than boots or even other trail shoes. He could hike bigger days, but the minimalistic design of the shoe led to shin splints, which ended his hike. I know you have a ton of viewer responses, but I would be interested in knowing about being too light for safe traveling. Good luck healing!

    Dude, tough break. You’re an athlete so you know better than anyone what is best. However, don’t limit your overall legacy by constantly cramming in miles. You need to be the Tiger Woods of the outdoors and only hit the majors. You have had foot arch problems before that led to injury. Just figure new insoles every major hike. I’m an old guy but you inspire me and I want you to be able to take a more long term view and continue to do what you love.

    I'm not.sure how old you are but as we age we develop chronic issues. I'm 62 and I have significant issues with my knee, it has developed into a 0roblem I just have to deal with. As you get older medical interventions are not as effective. I took time off with no relief, now I just have to suck it up for the first mile until my knee loosens up so I can run in relative comfort. But, there is not one minute of one day that the fragility of my knee is not in the forefront of my thoughts and decisions

    Hate seeing you have to get off the trail for injury reasons but I also love seeing a big name hiker showing people there are things more important than finishing, and that getting off trail doesn't make you a failure.

    While you're in the area of Chatanooga you should do the Wall's of Jericho trail in Alabama, not that long of a hike but well worth it!

    Did something bad to my knee on a hike and refused to listen to my body which ended me off the trails for close to 8 weeks! Good decision Darwin ❤️

    Sorry you had to bag the trip, but your body comes first. Good choice, and thanks for being a good example to the rest of us to listen to our bodies.

    Darwin - do you have any tips for Glasses on the trail? Anti fog products or the like?

    well sometimes its better to listen to your body then to push for more injuries. I also ended up with a knee that sounds abit like the one you had there on my Bornholm coast trail here in Denmark so walking downhill was painful so gonna be careful with that on future hikes for sure

    Sorry you had to cut this one short, but sounds like you made the right choice. When your body talks it's always wise to listen.

    Really smart to get off to allow yourself to heal.
    I have been dealing with leg issues for the past 25 years after having both my legs broken.. I know exactly the pain you are describing as I personally felt it quite often.
    It’s one of the reasons why I do section hikes, it allows my body to recover and I can get back out again.
    Really hope you get better soon and that can tackle your season...

      It definitely gets harder to bounce back the older you get 👍
