More Marillion please!!!!! Not enough people listen to them 20 albums a hole lot of music
The lead singer is Fish and he's Scottish. He did all the lyrics and is one of my favourite singer/songwriters. It's more than just a song, Fish is such a great storyteller. The album is a concept album but at the same time, with this bit in isolation, I think you both get the drift. Their earlier stuff, they were always being compared to early Genesis and believe they were an influence on the band, The guitarist is Steve Rothery who deserves a mention too, can be both melodic and do the filthy bars too, and another yorkshire man! lol
Steven Rothery is such a great guitarist and he doesn't get enough attention.

As far as Fish was concerned, their rise in popularity after Misplaced Childhood was also their (well, his) downfall....in his own words he was just not prepared to be a member of a 'supergroup'...no more anonymity.
"Misplaced Childhood" is a concept album. "Blind Curve" is also a very nice song when taken out of context, but it is better to listen to the album in its entirety or side by side.

@@Sid_Floyd.54I don’t understand your comment, but a concept album is an album that follows a continuing story (lyrics wise) compared to regular albums which consist of singular songs about different topics.
The band's name Marillion is derived from a book called 'The Silmarillion' written by J R R Tolkien who also wrote 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit'.

Oh yea, you guys always listen to some of my favorite music. I'm a huge Zappa fan but a very close second for me is early Marillion. It must be from the years when their lead singer Fish was still in the band. Some really great prog rock.
This album (Misplaced Childhood) is one that really should be listened to in it's entirety. The songs so perfectly blend into one another to create a wonderful listening experience.
Fish is probably the greatest lyricist of my time. Check out the lyric video to Warm Wet Circles, off of the Clutching at Straws album. The man can paint a visual like no other. His solo catalog is large and equally impressive as well. A View From the Hill off his initial solo album is a good start. This is a great rabbit hole to go down!

thats what all marillion haters say. but its nonsense. Marillion was our music, Pink Floyd and Genesis the for the generation before us. Every artists stands on the shoulders of his ancestors.
Yeah loved Fish era Marillion, almost like a beginner's Prog band but the guitar playing is so melodic and Fish was incredibly charasmatic. Script for a Jester's tear blew me away when I heard it for the first time and Garden Party is a great satire of upper class English life. Everyone I dip back there I have a great time, nice choice by your patreon. This was a full concept album that flows as one complete piece with some musical themes nipping in and out all through. Spawned a couple of massive hit singles and made Marillion mainstream, which was mad for a prog band. Although hardcore prog era Genesis fans hated them as they seen them as rip off merchants. As a prog fan myself I always loved them.
Fish paints a picture with his lyrics, such a great songwriter & lyricist.

Marillion is definitely an acquired taste. The first 3 or 4 albums are with fish as the lead singer. ROTHERY is a badass guitar player. Fish left and Hogarth became the singer. He is brilliant also. Marillion is incredible live no matter the singer. Nice suggestion. Welcome to the Marillion rabbit hole. It's pretty extensive.
I got the chance to see Marillion 3 times while station in W. Germany in the late 80s. The greatest concert band. With Fish as the lead singer. A great live concert to watch of them is Marillion Live at Loreley in 87. And I was there. Thank You for putting this on U tube.
yes, that was unique and extraordinary cause Loreley is up above of this mystic german spot along the rhine river. The venue is about 200 m away from the river but also over 100 m above the river on the hills.
What a concert. Only comparable to BJH BERLIN, a free concert for those suffering in east germany which had been played in West Germany along the Berlin Wall to let the east germans particitpate and hear it.
They are really great story tellers. Some of the best.

Welcome to Marillion! Super deep dive if you're into it. From the Fish era I always recommend "Sugar Mice". It has my favourite vocals from Fish and my favourite guitar from Steve Rothery. Steve's solos are melodic masterpieces. If you like journeys, "Invisible Man" from their Hogarth era album "Marbles" is great.

Your patron dropped you into the climax of this concept album. Fish is an incredible poet/lyricist. Marillion's virtuoso musicians continue on to this day with a different singer. Still topping European prog charts.

This is a record to be heard on a row. Blind curve is a tough one. A B side waiting for a second chance. But it eventually gets a to you and touch you deeply. I love the album.
Marillion is a British band and the pronunciation of their name is similar to saying "million" as in 1,000,000. :D They started out in 1979 and their lead singer was Derick Dick but only went by the name Fish. Fish was with Marillion till 1988, last appearing on their Clutching At Straws album.
Personally I'm only able to listen to Marillion with Fish as the singer. I purchased the first 2 albums with their next singer, Steven Hogarth, but the band never sparked much interest for me. They aren't bad but they don't have that deeper poetic vibe that I got with Fish. Fish did go on to make several solo albums over the years as well, his most recent one was in 2020.
Again I agree with you about Marillion with Fish. Can't stand Hogarth's stuff. It's like non-alcoholic beer (Hogarth's Marillion). It tastes the same but you know something vital and important is missing, lol.

Marillion are a British prog rock band. They've had two singers. The vocalist on this extract from their Misplaced Childhood concept album is named Fish and he's Scottish. Their latest vocalist, Steve Hogarth, is Irish. Great band with an extensive back catalogue and still going strong.

Ever heard the David Bowie song of the late 70s called Heroes ?
Recorded in the same studio also about a broken love on both sides of the wall inpired by the east german soldiers on patrol every night which you could observe from the studio which was in a higher floor and allowed to look behind that iron curtain.
Therefore the reference of those days at 8:06 people tend to forget: "I see convoys curbcrawling west german autobahns trying to pick up a war"
This is the picture of back then fast german Autobahns quite empty back then and slowed down by army convoys simply curbcrawling and slowing the traffic down which was a common problem back then . You had to drive slowly and stay behind even for hours.

You need to hear the entire album Misplaced Childhood from the beginning to the end non stop, is an emotional and art journey. I recommend you to listen their first album Script for a Jester's year and the last album Clutching the Straws from the original singer Fish.

Just listened to this album for first time in years today. Thought to myself… I wonder if anyone’s reacted to this particular song.. well here it is! Love it! Really a fantastic album that should be listened too in its entirety. I've always tried to tell my friends unfamiliar with marillion that they are like a cross between (70's)pink Floyd and early genesis.

Great choice.Check out these classics next Script for a Jesters Tear The Web and Incubus(although the whole of that Fugazi album is great) plus Chelsea Monday performed live at Hammersmith Odeon on their main channel is spellbinding too one of my fave songs with Fish at his theaterical emotional best and those guitar solos from Steve Rothery are pure gold
Marillion is a shortened name for Professor J R R Tolkien's book The Silmarillion which deals with the first two ages of Middle Earth; The book is only understandable by people who have been or are actual scholars of Tolkien.

Another great band I'd mostly dodged for years. Listenable AF, lol. Some intense imagery, strong social commentary. Stream of consciousness for sure. Lots of different avenues, or rabbit holes, thought-wise.
in the era of concept albums Marillion with Fish sailed in the slipstream behind Pink Ployd with Roger Waters and Genesis with Peter Gabriel far ahead of the rest of the world.

The part about Mylo was about the death of John Mylett, who was a friend of the band and a drummer for a band called Nutz, who tragically died in a car crash in, I believe, 1983. At the time, Marillion was touring in Canada and it was when they were at a gig in Toronto that Fish heard the news about his death.

Not Irish. It's an English band, but the singer is from Scotland. Also check out Bitter Suite from this same album if you haven't already, but ideally just listen to the entire album as it's meant to be a concept album. It's a band that most people have never heard of, but this is definitely one of my top 10 progressive rock albums of all time. Quality stuff. These guys kind of sparked a bit of a prog rock revival in the 80's.
This singer (Derek Dick aka Fish) left the band at the end of the 80's and was replaced by Steve Hogarth, with whom they still release music today. I kind of like the Hogarth era stuff better overall, but Misplaced Childhood is still favorite album of theirs as a whole.
Anyway, it's a great underrated band. Feel free to go down the rabbit hole if you like this one!

I will put in the hat a couple long songs from the 2nd singer Steve Hogarth - "This Strange Engine" (title track) which is an autobiography of the singer, and "Ocean Cloud" from a true story. I have been a massive Marillion fan from their first single to pre-ordering the new album that comes out next year. Although Misplaced Childhood was one of their most commercially successful albums it is one of my least favourite. The singer on this album was known as Fish (from Scotland) but he only recorded 4 studio albums with the band the later singer was Steve Hogarth and they are just about to release their 16th album with him as the singer. You should also check out some of the later works.
Try Keziah Jones Where's life is? From the album Blufunk is a fact! From 1992, all killer no killer no filler! Really you can't go wrong with any song on that album from top to bottom!

It’s a little confusing because this is from a concept album where every song is thematically related to every other song and the end of each song musically transitions into the start of the next. You called it “Blind Curve”, but you actually listened to several different songs.

It is not at all unusual for music lovers to be completely unaware of Marillion.
First, you have the legions of fans of the band who grew accustomed to the voice, tone, and lyrical poetry of Fish, and cannot accept the band without him in the lead. Fish left in 1988 to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Steve Hogarth, who is by all objective measures a vastly superior singer, but is about as different from Fish as could be imagined for a man. The tone of the music changed significantly with Hogarth writing most of the lyrics. Many people, even those who love both eras, will oftentimes comment that the name remained the same, as did all the personnel other than the vocalist, but they are really two different bands. Marillion had its greatest commercial success and renown with Fish at the helm, but, IMHO, the music during the Hogarth era is far more moving on a gut emotional level, both because of the writing and the much finer singing.
Second, as much as his fans loved Fish, much of the prog-listening public didn't care for his style of writing or his, to be kind, mediocre singing, and permanently removed Marillion from their list of bands they were eager to give a listen.
Third, with lots of Fish fans abandoning ship in 1989, the band's label became alarmed, then indifferent to the band as sales declined. The band switched labels a couple of times in search of a company that would properly promote their music, until one day the members decided that the label was taking its cut and doing nothing for it, so they decided to give it a go on their own. Wikipedia will tell you Marillion invented crowd-funding for popular music, and it worked very well for them, allowing the band complete artistic freedom while maintaining a decent standard of living for its members and small number of devoted staff. They have their own label now, Racket records, their own modest studio, and their own well-designed web site, marillion.com. Plus they have a modest-sized worldwide fan base that adores them passionately. I oftentimes wonder if the music industry has suppressed the music of Marillion out of concern that more bands will realize they don't need to sign with a record label to be successful in the internet era.
What they don't have is a record label promoting their music and their tours, or getting radio play for their new albums and singles. Much of their very best are long songs as is common for progressive rock, and not very radio friendly, anyway. They disapprove of YT uploads, but don't seem to actively pursue pirating except for the first several years after a new release, so their music is all over YT, both in studio songs and live versions.
Which leads to the next important point. For anything released in 1989 or afterwards, always choose to react to a live performance. Steve Hogarth magically transforms into a force of nature when the full band performs before a live audience. It is hard to exaggerate how much better he is live, not that he is all that bad to begin with singing in the studio.
A lot of youthful reactors spend their time reviewing songs from bands that long ago ceased performing or producing new music. Marillion is a living band consisting of the same five guys who produced an album in 1989 and are still putting our great new music, with another new CD coming soon, and which still tours internationally when governments allow travel. They also do something really wonderful for their devoted fans, the "Marillion Weekend", where they set up at one location and offer three different concerts on Friday through Sunday.
