    Whole album is good. They make magic together. This and Misplaced Childhood are my two fav albums from the Fish era. If you ever do Misplaced Childhood, you need to do it as a whole or at least Side 1 and Side 2. Thanks for doing this.

    This was Marillion at the absolute pinnacle of their powers. Lyrically, a compelling combination of world weariness and bitter vitriol. It's humanity clutching at straws in our collective failure to address the many problems afflicting our world. We're caught between rage and resignation, knowing our faults but failing at fix them, so we just look at each other and shrug, and get on with some futile distraction.

    This is the last song of the last album that singer/songwriter Fish did with the band. It's a concept album about a man, 29, who's life is a mess, fighting alcoholism, a failed marriage and being a shit father. playing in a failing band. There is a Genesis influence but feel they take it much further. This is what Genesis would have sounded like had they had a few more brain cells.
    You mentioned the cover. It shows some of Fish's influences and heroes. Robert Burns, Dylan Thomas, Truman Capote, Lenny Bruce, John Lennon, James Dean and Jack Kerouac.
    The female singer is Tessa Niles. She has mainly been a session singer but has sung with dozens and dozens of top artists. Clapton, Bowie, Tina Turner, the Stones, Bruford wakeman and Howe to name but a few.
    Nice reaction, thanks.

      Dylan Thomas was brilliant but a notorious drunk. I was in Tenby, Wales a little while back and there is a pub there (I think it's called The Coach and Horses) where Dylan Thomas apparently got drunk one night and left his script for Under Milk Wood on a barstool.

      @@richey4287 cheers for that. As you probably know, Fish battled alcoholism and think this album is part biographical about himself.

      I also like that the jester's cap is peaking out of his satchel as if representing the end of an era (which ended up being foreshadowing of course). I don't know if you have the re-issue of this album, but the 2nd disc has a collection of "unreleased" demos. What's interesting is that the music from those demo became tracks for "Season's End" while the lyrics became tracks for Fish's debut solo album "Vigil in the Wilderness of Mirrors."

    Yes this was the end of the brilliant Fish era, but they reinvented with H and continued to produce excellent prog with my fav Marbles album, then FEAR and An Hour Before it's Dark. Best thing is you can see them live with their new stuff and I shall see them Sept. They are the best live 21st c prog band out there

    I like Marillion alot. Both the Fish era and H era. Wish they'd had been more popular here in the US but for some reason they were never really marketed including the two early hits Kayleigh and Lavender. All of them are really superior musicians and pull off some wonderful stuff in both eras.

    • @paulfenwick8767
      @paulfenwick8767 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is the "superior" a dig at the flack I got when giving my reaction to Ms Pinky?, lol. Saw Marillion many times with Fish and saw Fish as a solo Artist about half a dozen times. Also seen guitarist Steve Rothery a few times. He always does a Fish era Marillion full album. Don't think H Marillion "allow" hardly any Fish. Musically, they are as good as ever but have never liked H voice or lyrics. They're like a castrated Marillion with him, IMO. I wouldn't go see them if you paid me. That's just me and I know there are fans who prefer the H version.

    • @chazblitz
      @chazblitz ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@paulfenwick8767 No man. Not a dig. I was just trying to illustrate how much I like their chops. I'm not much for fucking with people. Marillion is two separate eras. Kinda like ACDC, when you switch singers it's alot more noticeable than switching an instrumentalist especially here. I too favor the Fish era but I do also like H and the fact that he's a capable instrumentalist besides just being a front man.

    The female backing vocalist was Tessa Niles. She's brilliant and worked with a who's who of artists, Clapton, Bowie, The Stones...
    IMO this was Marillion's most complete album of the Fish era. Musically and lyrically sophisticated, with real joined up feel from the first to last song.
    One worth reacting to from this album is 'White Russian'.
    Immensely powerful, yet just as fresh today.

      Thanks very much, not often someone agrees with me, lol. Dan and Sifa reacted to my request "Blind Curve" about 6 months ago if you want to check it out. I'm more a Fish fan as "H"'s voice makes my skin crawl. When Fish went solo, touring "vigil", I saw him playing at a pub in Carlisle. After the show he was at the bar and I was with about 6 others, just chatting to him. Got his autograph. Was there about 20 minutes and in that time he had about half a dozen Murphy's/Jack Daniels chasers, and it didn't touch him, lol.

      @@paulfenwick8767 Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. I am a Fish fan too, he´s just a poet and his song texts were amazing. Saw him solo live for 3 times but those events were bigger ones so I couldn´t get in touch with him - I guess you were the lucky one at that pub :-) They had some quite good albums after the split but imo it never was the same again - Fish was simply an outstanding artist and storyteller. I have some of the later albums but I have the same problem with Steve´s voice - I can´t hear more than 3 or 4 songs after that it´s getting creepy for me- lol. Will check the blind curve reaction and still hoping to find more from that era here on youtube. Thank you for this nice little smalltalk on one of our fav bands and have a good time 🙂

    Fabulous album and the most mature one from the Fish era. Marillion carried this music through an unfashionable era for prog if you want to call it prog. It was sad to see Fish go his separate way but having listened to the first Fish solo album in 89, it was going nowhere and by contrast the first album from the H era, released same week was stunning and the first time we all listened to King of Sunset Town, we all know the future was secure. Some bumps along the way but here we are, 24 years on and we should all be very grateful for the magic they have produced, absolutely remarkable. I'm staggered at the energy of the performances every time and the musical quality of these guys. Put into context of the progression of what is good in rock, we really owe these guys, still described at times as the best kept secret in music.

    No no - it’s genesis mixed with pink floyd - serious great gig in the sky vibes with the female singer at the end. Fish vocals has very slight resemblance to sting in terms of deep resonance, but primarily by this stage of marillion he was sounding very similar to Phil Collins in that parallel era of genesis.

    Fish sings on this. He's done some other stuff under his name. I do remember reading an article where Fish the singer lol told them early on...this is Genesis lol....it's very cool stuff...best if you hear it all front to end. Fugazi has some cool early stuff. Clutching at Straws is as close as they got to their Dark Side of the Moon, but yeah prog tells a long story.

    with their first album they are waking up us all from forgetting the art of genesis or gentle giant, king crimson, vdgg etc in the early eighties, with their second album they move it all more to the limits, with their third album they move themselves more to the charts and with this fourth album they say by to their most giftet singer. After this, they have some nice records and some poorer, they never reached the standards again like they do with fish. Fish had done some good music too solo, but not so much. He was best when he do his personal Hammill. But I will never forget Marillions first four albums together with fish!

    I może w końcu przestańcie już porównywać Marillion do innych zespołów, ponieważ od płyty Fugazi stali się po prostu sobą.
    A tekstów Fish'a raczej nie da się porównać do kogokolwiek innego. Jak również śpiewu gitary Steve'ana.
    Żaden do Genesi, Police czy Sting!
