      @@MrSinnerBOFH Technically I did. I checked and I have Season's End and Brave, the first 2 albums without Fish. I listened to them 3 or 4 times but they just seemed like basic pop-rock music. To me, Fish was the soul of Marillion and when he left it left Marillion feeling rather lifeless to me.
      To be fair, I've bought a number of Fish solo albums over the years and some things I loved but I don't think any of them stand up to the work he did together with Marillion. I think there are a few reasons for that. They just worked really well together as a group of people. The time period was much more open to music that was a bit more 'weird' for lack of a better term.
      Most of all I think it had a lot to do with how much younger they were at the time. Very few artists that reach great heights in their youth are able to maintain the same level of creativity and success as they age. Some of it may be due to the pressures of previous success. Age also can bring on a huge amount of fear and doubt. So many young people are fearless (or stupid) in their pursuit of success in music, sports, acting.... whatever. As you get older you realize all the things that can, and will likely, go wrong and that can create a huge amount of fear which can limit creativity.
      I should also be clear, I don't hate Marillion without Fish but I avoid them because of how much better I thought they were with Fish. I feel the same with Van Halen. They were an amazing hard rock band with David Lee Roth. When they replaced him with Sammy Hagar the music was good but not as good as older VH. Maybe it's a bit of resentment on my part?

    A medal for whoever suggested this one. These days I much prefer to listen to more recent music by Marillion, but this was the first iteration of the band at the top of its game. The lyrics are as good as you will find anywhere, and a Steve Rothery guitar solo is always worth the price of admission. Other good songs: Forgotten Sons, Grendel, Chelsea Monday, Jigsaw, Warm Wet Circles.

    Marillion is a band that never achieved huge success in America but were much more popular in Europe. They have been around since the very early 80's. Their first lead singer was a man who called himself Fish, he left the and in 1988 to have a solo career. I'm a huge fan of Marillion when Fish was in the band but never cared much for their stuff after he left.
    I strongly suggest checking out songs like: Forgotten Sons, Garden Party, Punch and Judy, Kayleigh, Lavender, Heart of Lothian, Sugar Mice, Incommunicado.... so many more but that's a good start. :D

    • @Mr.Batsu12
      @Mr.Batsu12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Soul Traveller Well, not for this American or some of my friends from High School back in the late 80's :D I got introduced to them shortly before their Clutching At Straws album got released and I was blown away. I remember having the cassette for Misplaced Childhood in my car for many months. I was one of those players that would automatically play both sides of the album for you. I just kept that in playing over and over.

    • @Mr.Batsu12
      @Mr.Batsu12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Soul Traveller I totally agree. I bought Seasons End, their first album without Fish, and that was the last Marillion album I bought. It wasn't horrible music but it was not Marillion any longer.
      I did buy a number of Fish albums over the years which I really enjoyed. His music wasn't the same as Marillion but it was so much closer than what Marillion became without him. It's strange how Fish by himself was more Marillion than Marillion themselves are. :D

    • @Mr.Batsu12
      @Mr.Batsu12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Soul Traveller Freddie Mercry is a good example. I think the one time such a unique band leader was ever replaced successfully was Bon Scott of AC/DC. Being the singer sort of automatically puts you as the face of the band and his voice was so unique but I think finding Brian Johnson to replace him was a one in a million chance and worked out very well. Of course I really hate the idea of all the music Bon Scott could have sung on if he didn't pass. :(
      I'm a huge fan of Steven Rothery's playing. I'm a guitarist and have been playing for about 35 years now. I was pretty new to playing when I first started hearing Rothery and of course fell in love with his style. He reminds me a lot of David Gilmour, putting more focus on melody and style than flashy fast playing.

As with you, the Fish songs do nothing for me at all. I can't identify with the subject matter or empathize with the tone of the Fish songs. The Jester is a sort of symbol for the band (Based from Script For a Jester's Tear album). So the picture is the lead signer on the bed and the Jester is in the reflection. Mark Wilkinson did a lot of album covers for the band. He was an amazing artist.

    Hi. Longtime Marillion fan here. Just wanted to say that I think it's great you did this track and enjoyed it. This one is uncommon to see reactions to. You commented on the art. Try an image search for Marillion cover art. What you saw there was only 1/2 of the album cover that included gatefold wraparound art. Their first 3 albums (Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi, and Misplaced Childhood) all did with themes that carried over. You may also see additional art from the artist Mark Wilkinson who worked with Iron Maiden and followed Fish after he went solo in '88.
    If I recall, Fugazi (fu-gah-zi) is a term used in military in the UK, similar to the US "Fubar( F'd up beyond all recognition)" . It means "F'd Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In". Zipped in being like trapped, zippered in, escape route sealed, etc.
    Hope you continue exploring them. tons of great stuff through the ages, and they're still making music today. Back in the studio now.

    To respond to your remark regarding the artwork: the first 4 albums by Marillion were story-driven, with the main character, the Jester going through different stages of his life. If you look at the artwork fo first album, there is a Jester in his dormroom, and Fugazi, the second one - shows the same character laying naked in a hotel, while the jester suit is on bed. There is also Peter Hammill's album Over on the floor, a chameleon that tries to lick a magpie that holds a key to a cage and a jigsaw with a missing piece next to jester's heart. All are references to lyrics on the album. It's really a work of art, there is quite a story into it, so it's worth listening to them all one by one to figure it out.

I dont know if it was because in those days you had record sleeves with the lyrics printed on them and all the amazing artwork you could digest and decipher over and over again and again, but I'm willing to bet now that no 13 year old or even 18 year old would have a clue about what Fish was talking about on these records. It's an amazing song, but in today's parlance, he's fantasising about ruining her life through 'revenge porn'; completely destroying her fake public persona, as he sees it. It's a phenomenal song, but pretty damned nasty at the same time!

    Girl, you haven't done Neverland by Marillion yet? Get to it, the longer you leave it the more you'll regret it. Romantic and beautiful and of course the inspiration is Peter Pan hence allusions to flying and Wendy Darling. Intrigued? It's like a love song from Peter Pan to Wendy. That's probably too much information - here's more:
    1) The studio version on Marbles is a bit stilted, and has a musical doodle at the end, they're better live anyway. My favourite live version on CD is on the Live at Hyde Park album but it's hard to come by.
    2) If you're doing a reaction to a TH-cam live version, a really particularly great version is the Out of Season 2009 one here:

    You needed to live then too. The era and the music were inseparable.

    I don't think you realise how dark this song is. The singer is not the good guy in this song. It's revenge porn way before it was such a thing.

    Fish is Marillion. marillion is dead.

    When Fish left , Marillion became pointless… the current singer hasn’t got a poetic bone in his body

    Very difficult to react to. you really need to read the lyrics and think outside the box with the meanings

    Don’t like this song sorry fans of Marillion I heard the other singer and he’s much better and the music is better
