Its really great you 2 appreciate Marillion. Its very unfortunate they did not get much airplay in America. Both Fish and Steve Hogarth are amazing talents.
Hogarth is a singer..Fish is a fallen angel who came to Earth to teach us how they sing in Paradise..
I worked this show as front of stage security in '83 at the hammersmith odeon,London,and i remember saying at the time that it was like Genesis at their very best.I became a fan that night.

When Fish left they should've changed their name. I've been a fan since the first album.

I agree. The studio version of this song is truly a masterpiece. It wowed me when I first heard it nearly 40 years ago and it still does. I love the emotional riffs that Steve plays and those lyrics are unbelievable. By the way, I know whereof I speak in that regard. I was a Journalism major at Ohio State.
Unique rememberable Voice is the defintion.Marillion were Superstars at that time in Europe and especially in Germany.When Fish spoke German with his Scottish Accent,the Crowd went mad ;)

Indeed Rich, Hogarth has great pipes without a doubt... Fish is Marillion's Roger Waters, he was the rage machine... always angry, hurt or outraged by the world around him & always seemed to convey all his emotions live. I was lucky enough to see them live for the 1st time in 1984.. I was 13 I went on my own.. ( too proggy for my metal friends) .. & I was transfixed by the total theater of their performance. So that wasn't the last time I saw them live.. I REALLY hope we see some more Fish Marillion xx horns to you both \m/

I first bought script for a jesters tear when it came out, from then on I had everything from the fish era including recital of the script(where the live performance is from) I hadn’t seen this video in about 30 years. Thanks so much for taking me back to my childhood.
The very first album I ever bought. And I still love it. Its very niche. Glad you are discovering this stuff.
Both singers put heart and soul in the performance of the music live they are very emotional.

Any Marillion is great, but Hogarth seems more contemporary to me now while Fish is a nostalgia trip. That said, I've never seen a more charismatic stage performer than Fish or encountered a more eloquent wordsmith. Forgotten Sons, Chelsea Monday and Grendel from this gig are all worth watching.

@Jean-Maurice Bicard I've seen Marillion both with Fish and Steve Hogarth and, even though there is a continuity, I think of them as separate bands. It's good nostalgic fun if the current band does a Fish era song, but it's like a band doing a cover version. These days I would rather hear Neverland or The Great Escape.
I'm still fascinated by Fish who's eternal.. For me Marillion is and will be Fish forever, Jigsaw forever❤️❤️

I was into marillion in the 80s when I was about 8 yrs old I was marillion mad seen them in 1987 in the royal court in liverpool and it was amazing.I had six foot posters all over my bedroom walls,picture discs, t-shirts and they was my favourite band.Once fish left I never listened to them again because for me marillion with fish was the best so I stopped listening. WHEN I Iisten to old marillion now which I do a lot they excite me because they was unreal and what a band Chelsea Monday live wow

my favorite band, ever
You two have chosen well. This is an epic song that takes you on a journey. It may be one of the best . rock/metal songs ever performed. Because of that, Rich, you do owe it to yourself to hear the studio version of the song. There are things that are drowned out or get missed in this version. All in all, though, congrats for reacting to a very underrated and under appreciated masterpiece. Thanks.

The beauty of Fish era Marillion is that each album is very unique and distinct. I don't get that from the newer stuff. I think it always seems to be missing something. I guess that must be Fish. Not just the voice and lyrics but also his influence.
I bet these two would love Cliche from his first solo album.

imho there is beauty in both eras. I used to prefer the Fish albums, then actually turned towards Hogarths albums for years and then back to Fish once again. Favourite is probably Clutching at Straws . But one can’t deny the beauty of a song like “Out of this world” from Afraid of sunlight.

still the strongest memories to these songs and the era during cold war when fish met his german wife and became the iconic german scottish singer talking about germany during cold war and the west Berlin island and Hansa studios there where this album had been recorded.
It has been composed and recorded there - just a few meters away from the icron curtain or Berlin Wall which became famous also in the song David Bowie released in the late 70s called Heroes. But Misplaced Childhood had been recorded there 7 years later at the peak of Cold War before Gorbatchov became President.

And in these years he had watched german Autobahn full of military convoy from all the allied forces slowly moving some where and causing all the traffic jams which slowed everything down.

This song is about feelings and regrets for his ex-girlfriend Kay and how their relationship ended. This song is also connected to their 1985 song "Kayleigh", from the Misplaced Childhood album. There are several lyrics/message in these songs that are connected. In this song, "I never did write that love song, the words just never seemed to flow" go with the lyrics/message in Kayleigh, "Kayleigh, I'm still trying to write that love song, Kayleigh is more important to me now you're gone". Another example from this song, "Too late to say I love you, too late to re-stage the play", go along with the lyrics in Kayleigh, "Kayleigh is it too late to say I'm sorry?
And, Kayleigh, could we get it together again, I just can't go on pretending that it came to a natural end". I'm not sure Fish has ever really gotten over her.
People always talk about how Fish was basically Marillion, and without Fish Marillion is no more, but I can't help to think of how identifiable is Rothery's sound and Pet Trewavas bass playing and his lines, but also, the influence of Mick Pointer in the drums when all of it started. He wasn't just a drummer, he did a lot for the sound of Marillion even though he didn't last very long.
I love both eras, and my favourite songs are from the Script album and then from Marbles.
At this point, Prog Metal had just begun and Marillion had kind of morphed into that genre, but this song still holds many elements of Prog Rock. This song is very Yes-like. I did love the theatrics, though, because it fits what is a truly emotional song. This may be the most artistic take on losing the one you love to someone else, that I have ever heard.
The one thing I wish was that you had focused on more of the lyrics. From comparing love to a game you play on a playground to comparing losing someone you hav loved forever to another to a jester, who, although he may be broken hearted, his job is to promote laughter, so he has to hide his pain, in he lyrics are moving and memorable. So I’ll hold my peace forever, as you wear your bridal gown is a very telling line. The winner in this game of love is even compared to a prince, while the loser is compared to a frog. And that is just the lyrics. This song covers everything musically. It really embodies everything a Prog Metal anthem is. This song is good enough it has always caused me to put Marillion above Dream Theater in the Prog Metal hierarchy ( For the record my rankings are 1 Savatage, 2 Queensryche, 3 Fates Warning, 4 Marillion, 5 Dream Theater).

His performance suited the song. He's never afraid to go near the edge, vocally or emotionally . Hogarth is too smooth for me. I wss lucky enough to meet him after a solo gig in the early P. M. (post-Marillion period). A nicer man you could not wish to meet. His vocals are softer on the Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws albums.

We had at that time a record shop in Bremen where they had like 4 record players that constantly played one record and you could take headphone and listen to it. And when i saw one day that cover i was directly interested and then blown away by this song.
A few friends of mine always called them a Genesis copy, but for me they were just the same genre, but there was not soo much in that genre, but in the end they sound quite different. And also Genesis were so good, that more music of that kind was always welcomed to me.

This is the song that made me first discover marillion. As a keyboard player in the 80`s read article about Mark Kelly and was hooked. Big fan of both Fish & Steve but no-one here in Australia has ever heard of them.

I'm so pleased you did this one! Cannot tell you how much I love this band. Grew up with Fish era Marillion, and it was those four perfect albums that opened the doors to a world of Prog for me. All the classic Prog bands I now listen to started with Marillion. Just got tickets to see Fish play live early next year. Kind of his 'farewell' tour, as he is bowing out of the music business with a final album. Pleased you enjoyed this.
I would personally take Fish's vocal imperfections, as he has all the energy and passion in those lyrics. That was his style in those early days, largely inspired by Gabriel. I pretty much stopped with Marillion after buying Season's End. Just couldn't take to Hogarth. I gave them a go, but Fish's solo stuff was providing me with type of music I wanted.

I love both Fish and Steve Hogarth. Fish is my favorite lyricist, and H is such a massive vocalist....both are epic acts!
These are brilliant lyrics and I agree with that, but, unfortunately, the best rock/metal lyricist is gone now. Again, I love these lyrics, but nobody beats Neil Peart. Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) and Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) are also up there among the best. All have different styles but are brilliant songwriters nonetheless. But still, Living in the Limelight, the universal dream for those who wish to seem. And those who wish to be must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination, the real relation, the underlying theme. There has never been a better description of the dichotomy of life as a rock musician. Fish is great, but Neil is unmatched.
I saw Marillion on the promo tour for this album.'83 and 82 before they had signed a record deal.
Yes, Rich, I would listen to the studio version if I were you. Not only are the vocals pristine, but the sound is less muddied, so you can hear Steve Rothery much better and his guitar work on this song is so emotional that it must be heard clearly. There are two really emotional guitar parts in rock/metal that I think evoke the emotions of the lyrics very well. The best, I believe, is the guitar riff played before the last verse of Let Her Cry by Hootie and the Blowfish. The second is in this song toward the end where the lyrics talk of the wedding of the girl the songs subject has always loved. The riff evokes crying and wailing, which is just the feeling that the lyrics try to evoke. It is a perfect match. It is emotional and it is beautiful.

Probably the most emotive frontman I would say I have ever seen live, fantastic musicians also of course, very tight band. Lucky enough to see them a good few times in their very early years in Fish's hometown of Edinburgh.
This is in some ways a parallel to Genesis, with a theatrical singer, like Gabriel. Unlike Genesis, though, Marillion never went commercial.
Except maybe for Holidays in Eden. Good cuts nevertheless but still on the commercial side.

Great reaction from you both and interesting comment from Rich about Fish vocals..that was the early days and Fish vocals got better until Clutching at straws album...for me who has been keyboardist for 3 years in Real to Reel - Marillion 's Fish era tribute band in UK, playing this song was always emotional...and still...after my very first listen in 1983...Now I m a part of the Marillion H era tribute in UK called BRAVE but we are planning to add Script to our set very soon...memories will flow again...

Yesterday I went into a record store and found the 1985 album, Misplaced Childhood by Marillion... it's fantastic. It's a concept album without a single break in the music as it moves from song to song. In 2003 it was ranked as the 4th best concept album of all time... a side note; my daughter was named after the second track from the album. Kayleigh

Thanks for this No he wasn't a classically trained singer, He sang in a false falsetto that was too high for his register. But TOO much on the criticism of this, Fish is a genius, Im one of those, "The band became unlistenable after fish left. For the greater part the album cuts are fantastic, but the true genius of Fish is his Lyrical songwriting. The PROSE of it, and the DELIVERY. He's unmatched in wordcraft, to the point of being poet laureate of the world. he has GOD LEVEL wordcraft. A Master poet. The Only ones Near his level alive are Bob Dylan and Steve Kilbey from the Church. Listen to Fugazi and Misplaced childhood in full, Clutching at straws is epic, La Gazza ladra is great (saw the tour as a high-schooler) -And the Musicianship- Rothery, god level also underrated as good as lifeson in my book - Fish's solo work also deserves a good hard look. Best lyricist alive today by far.

I loved Marillion, saw them live 2 times with Fish, but after he left i only bought one album, and then was done with them. Still loved the guitar, but Hogarths vocals were just boring.
I also just saw the reaction video here of Sugar Mice with the album version and then a life version with Hogarth, and that sounded so bad, as if he was drunk or people punched him in the face and he lost all teeth or whatever ... so yeah, unlistenable.
Great song, Fish is a superb singer/songwriter. The band was originally called Silmarillion after the J R R Tolkein Book But shortened it to Marillion when Steve Rothery joined the band. Fish has gone on to even greater heights as a solo artist, Sunsets On Empire and Field Of Crows are two of his finest albums.
They were always labelled - somewhat unfairly - as the poor man's Genesis; particularly the Gabriel era. but for that fact, they would have been massive. Check out my favourites, Lavendar and Kayleigh.

In two minds about this live version, the tempo seems noticeably slower than the album, particularly at the start where it loses some of the punch, but Fish puts even more emotion into the vocals than the studio version (if that is possible).
A bit more speed at the start, and this would be perfection.
Tempo was down to Pointer, hence his exit after Script... album.
