We were all younger in the PS3 era. Less technology (eg. smartphones, social media overload, etc.), less adult responsibilities, and a touch of nostalgia, like going to gamestop, holding a game case in your hands, & browsing the titles. The smell of plastic... There wasn’t so much emphasis on digital download. Everything felt so new and incredible in those days.

But now its time to grow up and give Sony all our money. You may have a job but you cannot call yourself a complete adult and supporter of democracy if you dont give your hard earned money to the corporations on things such as online subscriptions (paid online) and mictrotransactions, because spending is what keeps society going, so there really shouldnt be 'free' stuff. Democracy is freedom but freedom aint free. Was that what you were going to say?

I heard there's an employee discount. How generous of your boss and how lucky for you. And dont forget to vote too.
Bc back then people actually put their hearts into creating a game. Then online, microtransactions, loot boxes, and patches happened so devs could just release buggy games and fix it later with patches..
Uum hello? God of war, spiderman, horizon zero dawn, nier automata, bloodborne, persona 5,nioh,yakuza series, zelda botw, mario odyssey, super smash bros and more. Just because there are also bad games that are released in the curremt gen doesnt mean that every games nowadays are trash. Nostalgia is heck of a drug and you really should stop getting addicted to it.
You forgot to mention that beautiful orchestra sounding startup sound for the ps3. That orchestra riff always made me feel exited, like I was about to step into completely different universes. It always seemed to lighten my mood that little bit. It might have not been that important, but still, it was something that never got boring to listen to.

1 - PS3 has free online play 2 - You don't have to install every game you buy 3 - Most games work perfectly fine without download a huge Day-One Patch (and trust me, it's a HUGE pain if you don't have a good internet connection, I had to wait literally 2 days to play some games I bought) 4 - More console exclusive games and split-screen more supported (and usually missing on PC ports), so playing on PC was less convenient for some people, also way more 4-player games to play with your friend, and not just indies. 5 - It can play PS1 games both physical and digital releases, and I used that a lot more than I thought I would do actually 6 - Tons of great PS3/PSP/PSVita interaction features (Cross-Save was an amazing thing, also Cross-Play and Cross-Buy) 7 - It just supported almost every device you plugged in. 8 - PS2 ports were decent (J&D anyonre) 9 - Games didn't have loot boxes or excessive DLC abuse 10 - Overall, AAA games were trying to push the limits and do something new sometimes (Red Faction, LBP, MNR, StarHawk, Blur...) and single player games (or even some local co-op) were a lot more present in libraries, now all we got are greedy soulless multiplayer-only experiences, reskins/clones of already successful games or remakes of old stuff... or indies, which I can play on potato PCs so I don't really need a PS4 for.....Sure ,there are some exceptions nowadays, but last gen the respect for the customer was everyday life. I still use my PS3 almost daily and I still buy games for it (which right now are really cheap here in Italy), and I have both a PS4 and a 1500€ gaming PC, let just think about that
I dont think this is a advantage, the blu ray was very slow and the games that lacked the option to install had very long load times compared to the same game on the 360. What I do like more about this on the PS3 is that the data management is smarter. On modern systems, they just copy everything over from the disc to the hard drive, no questions asked. On PS3 the game installs were tailored to the game experience, meaning that, for example, Ni no Kuni requires installing but only for the language you chosen to run the game, on machines of today they install all languages available on the game even though the user probably will never use most of them, or how Gran Turismo games installed assets for quicker access, but if you didnt had much space, it could run some data from the disc so the game was not in an unplayable state.
I bought a PS3 last week and I have no regrets. As someone who has a 360 and PS4, it was nice to finally get this system. Unfortunately, this is an era of gaming that we will never see again. Tons of games that were great and didn't have to worry about microtransactions. I love my PS4 and the games I have for it but it's a shame we will never see things the 360 and PS3 did in the gaming world again.
@@tjthegreat7 For about 90% of the main life cycle of the PS3 and 360, there was hardly a game that had mictotransactions. After 2012 was when we started seeing it more and the PS4 and Xbox One were the consoles where it really started to get bad.
@@sidioushatesyou5856 I don't see things being all digital but you never know. Physical copy sales keep going down. GameStop is a perfect example because they have been on a down hill slide the past few years because people aren't going out and buying physical games like they do.
I can remember the exact day I got a PS3 so it was 10 days after Christmas 2011 and we just came back from the shop and I went to the living room to play liberty city stories on my PSP or something and I was called to get something from my parents room and there was just a box I thought that was what it was so I took it down to them and after opening it I saw the black box and holy shit my 10 year old mind was blown away by it after setting it up and starting up a random game I was yet again blown away by the realistic graphics (unrelated this was on a 2002 tv) I shit you not I played it all night I know someone is gonna say "that's cool but did I ask" but I just thought it was relevant to the video
They ps3 days were the best days because they were the same days as the Xbox 360 days. Xbox ruled that generation. This is coming from a 26 year old life long playstation fan. I switched from ps3 to Xbox 360 in 2010 and I made the right choice. The 360 had party chat as well. Ps3 never had that. That was the game changer imo. @@TheDarknight7000 the PS3 was the first console with Online? even if we're limiting that to just Sony that's nowhere close to correct. The PS2 had online and it was _free_ just like the PS3. The only reason why Sony and now Nintendo are charging for online is because Sony saw how much money Microsoft made from Xbox Live Gold and saw consumers had no problem forking over money to pay online so they figured they'd do the same. While I do agree, that free online will never happen again, it's mostly due to the success the Xbox had with Xbox Live Gold than anything else and had the Xbox 360 flopped, I can almost guarantee that PS4 online play would be free.
Im on ps3 right now until the ps5 comes out. Just makes me sad, ps3 days were the best times. Games and community Just wish the old xmb would come back. It will always be the best. The memories I made on this console almost make me shed a tear.

This generation in general. Maybe it's just me personally but my interest in video games was really low for most of this generation. Just the way the industry has moved into IMO
I agree, there were a number of really good AAA titles, but for some real innovation you always had to look for the indie developers. It´s a shame that many big publishers are not willing to accept the risk which comes with investing into fresh ideas
Plus you can play up to to 7 players/controllers locally on the PS3 on games like FIFA on the other hand the PS4 only support up to 4 players/controllers locally max which sucks.
PS3 + soft mod = god like You can play almost every PS1, PS2, (discontinued, download only or retail) PS3 game. Even a few PSP games right on the PS3 system. It has a solid emulation too.
What is the point though? You can do much more with a PC with way less effort than softmodding a PS3. Only advantage would be hardware PS2 emulation on the first gen fat PS3 and I guess the analog video output on every PS3 model if you fancy that.
Why do you care of the graphics..... PS4 isn't all graphics, Uncharted 4 with a better tv is better then any uncharted game out there for graphics and smoothness. PS4 is about smoothness no lag a bit faster then ps3 but not as fast then ps4 pro. That performance is better on ps4 So why are mentioning about graphics not the performance?
meanwhile my pc with an I5 and a dedicated gpu with 1 gb of video memory struggles with 1080p 60 because one of youtube's updates ruined the performance
I agree, I still play my PS3 more to this day. It introduced me to BluRay movies, online play, wireless controller with power controls!, and had so many great games! The PS3 was a revolutionary console gaming experience in my opinion!
Yea when I got a PS3 I realized I could now watch Blu-ray movies but then I remembered I only had a standard Def TV lol. Eventually I got a 40in 1080p HDTV at the end of the life cycle of the PS3 as it was rumored the PS4 and next Xbox wouldn't support standard Def TV's. So I figured if I wanted to keep gaming I'd have to upgrade. Man the 1st time I saw Uncharted 2 in HD I was absolutely floored lol. Then I started to build my Blu-ray collection. Now with the Xbox One X I've started doing the same but with 4K Blu-rays.
I play PS3 for Gran Turismo 6, Shin Megami Tensei games and listen to Green Day on it really nowadays. I loved it when I first got it for many exclusives and third party games back in 2013,but PS4 just irons out so many shortcomings the PS3 had I really didn't bother with it anymore aside from just being a GT or Backwards compatibility machine. Edit: Now that I think about it. I feel my PS Vita is like a combo mix of PS3 and PS4 with of course PSP/PS1 game catalog so maybe that ultimately led me to just lose more interest of the PS3.
Nah, PS2 was the revolutionary system. Look how long it ran for. PS3 was more of a computer to me. Without the internet, PS3 wasn't much. XBOX 360 and PS3 took the fun out of gaming.

PS3 is easily one of the greatest systems ever made. The capabilities of it as a media device (the XMB is the greatest UI ever), coupled with the fantastic PS3 library, and being able to play 99% of PSX games. Such a fantastic system. It was a super exciting time in 2008 when Sony really started to make waves and show what the PS3 was capable of. I still play it more than my PS4.
And ps3 was a nigntmare for the developers who developed for it , got inferior ports , online hacking community attack , poor online infastructure , the goddamn controller , on the positive side , it also was super nice looking , complex and unique hardware , great first party lineup , begging of sony stepping up there online abilities and fully backwards compatible with nice innovation of motion controllers . Flatulent Trogdor more diversity in genre, which is good, but come on, the ps4 has blood borne, the last of us remastered, god of war 3 remaster and GOW 4, spider man, days gone, horizon zero dawn, uncharted the Nathan drake collection and uncharted 4, until dawn, ratchet and clank, Detroit become human, the last guardian, killzone shadow fall, and now we have TLOU2 and ghost of Tsushima on there way soon. That’s impressive, and pretty much just as good as the ps3 lineup in my book.
@@punctuationman334 I'm with you. The ps4 has a lot of remakes so did the ps3 with its HD remasters. But honestly If i took those games out from both systems. I'd prob still have the same amount of games for my ps3 as my ps4.
No reason to get rid of it, it's an awesome system. Done the same, my PS3 sits next to my PS4. Just like my soft mod original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One X. No reason to get rid of older systems, all have their great game's.
The ability to play PS1 games, and some games exclusive to that time, like Batman Arkham City, Mortal Kombat 9, NBA 2K11 and a few more, have me coming back to my PS3 lately. I've also been disappointed lately in how buggy or broken a few games I recently bought are, like Cyberpunk and the GTA Trilogy. I think the NBA games in the PS3 generation are better than today's, mainly due to the AI not being so bad as it is in current titles.

i think the jump from playstation 2 to playstation 3 was so drastic, but ps3 to ps4 was really not as prolific of a jump. Why does it matter that Xbox Live is paid? For instance Call of Duty was peer-to-peer back then, there's nothing Microsoft can do on software that can improve the connection, its all done via the NIC in your Xbox 360 and your home's internet connection, that is hardware that are standardized in all home machines/PC.
@@demonpride1975 PC stayed free throughout time and still remains having the best servers with a larger and more developed ecosystem. You are not relying on a 1st-party solution which usually are there to cut-cost and lock down their platform. For example in Battlefield 3/4 on consoles, all servers are run by EA (you are paying Xbox Live for nothing), while on PC you can choose to play on the vanila EA servers or play on community servers which is always better than EA's solution since they typically have higher tick rate and higher bandwidth.

I remember saving up all of my money from my paper round just to afford the PS3 and still needing to borrow money from my dad to cover the cost at launch xD and then using my christmas tips to pay for the eye of judgement which was such an awesome game at the time. I've just picked up a backwards compatible launch model (mine died years ago) and I'm planning on cleaning it and doing some mainteance on it before going back down the awesome rabbit hole that is the PS3 games library. Awesome video, only recently discovered the channel but you've got a new fan and subscriber here in the UK.
I don't know if this is irony but actually, i have a fat ps3 and there's so much dust on it and I'm too lazy to clean it. I don't really care about it's design, it's working well (not for me, i need almost 1~2 mins before starting it completely) and it has good games on it. And one has backwards compatibility, which was removed for absolutely no reason, and i really hope that this will be on the next ps.

For me, it was all about the games. So many games from that generation have gone down in history as classics. The Last of Us Uncharted Trilogy Ezio Trilogy BioShock 1 & Infinite God of War 3 the Dead Space trilogy Fallout 3 & New Vegas & Skyrim Arkham Asylum It was a golden age of gaming come again, I think. How many games from this generation are going to be remembered as classics? A couple maybe. Bloodborne, Horizon, GoW, Witcher 3. But... compared to the PS3/360 era, nowhere near as many. And development times are now so long that we've stopped getting trilogies within one generation.
Uncharted 4 , Lost Legacy , Bloodborne , Persona 5 , Horizon Zero Dawn , The Witcher 3 + 2 Awsome Addons , Red Dead Redemption 2 , Sekiro , God of War , Doom , Dishonored 2 , Prey , Spider-Man , Resi 7 and 2 Remake , Monster Hunter World , MGS V , The Last Guardian , Divinity Original Sin 2 , Pillars of Eternity , Dragon Quest 11 , Hitman 1 and 2 , NieR Automata , Nioh , Titanfall 2 , Dying Light and many more. I dont need shitty Trilogy like Dead Space where ever game became worse and 3 was a trainwreck , Ezio is just an garbage ubiworld where ever game is the exact same. Bioshock Infinite was a shitty shooter no wonder they closed the studio after that. Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are alot better than the older uncharted games. and we still have tlou 2 to come.
Look you can like the ps3 and drowned yourself in seas of nostalgia but that doesnt mean that the ps4 dont have any excellent games especially the exclusives heck even surpassed than that of the ps3 titles. Imo gaming has been better than ever with all of the unique and great games that we had received so far.
The thing I miss and will never experience again is just the sheer shock of the graphical fidelity upgrade to PS3. My first PS3 game was "Uncharted 2", so going from a PS2 on a CRT to the PS3 on a HDTV with that game was astounding. With TVs just getting "more HD" and games being so visually deep that some studios have to make the games less photorealistic to avoid Uncanny Valley, the next jump will never be as impressive. I remember thinking what the point of a PS4 is when PS3 graphics couldn't be beat, and didn't realize for years how significantly better PS4 looks over PS3, until I played my PS3 on my 4k TV recently and noticed how low the resolution was. I just played the remastered God of War 3 on PS4 and swore it always looked and ran that well on PS3 and was wondering what was remastered about it until I replayed the oroginal version on the ps3. Now I'm numb to the progress and the industry and technology is at a point where they make more small leaps rather than game changing ones.

Between 2009-2013 were the best times I had gaming. PS3 was the first console I purchased with my hard earned money, was really into a game I saw on TH-cam called WarhawK and had to have it. from Uncharted to Killzone 2, to Uncharted 2 to Infamous to God of War 3, and so on and so on. Plus the one major thing I loved about PS3 was Playstation Home, just logging on to a game service where I could chat with people about our favorite games and personal lives. The console will always hold a special place in my heart.
Too many menues in PS4, in PS3 you can turn off a controller with the press of two buttons, meanwhile on PS4 you have to navigate 3 separate menues, plus the PS4 hub just looks bad with its big square blocks

I’m not even mad I don’t own a PS4 anymore. I got a launch PLAYSTATION 3. November 2006. Yes, the disc drive is broken and needs to be swapped out, and the system is an absolute monster in terms of power consumption, BUT, the sheer quality of the games for it, the fact you can still buy some games digitally, the media functions, the look, the graphics, Journey, Motorstorm, Gran Turismo, it’s all there on PS3. I’m sad it’s in such a bad state, but the moment I fix all that, I have a multimedia powerhouse that can play PS3, PS2 and PS1 games, meaning I can finally enjoy Gran Turismo 4 in high definition. Im still kicking myself for never buying one while it was in its prime. But I’m here now, I got mine for $30, and every single time I look at this black and silver land yacht, I smile like an idiot. It was such a good time. And as long as there’s one PS3 out there that works, and someone’s playing it, the PS3 will never truly die. :)
Me too personally I enjoyed the PS3 more and they took a massive step backwards with the PS4 with the media functionality the PS3 was a beast of a system way ahead of its time.
What’s the point in that? Most people would have moved on to the next gen and anyone left would be much higher levels and have more stuff than you inthe games not to mention you’ll miss out on all the free limited time content.
Definitely understand your mindset but time waits for no one, you never know when death comes knocking on your door..... Best to enjoy life now if you can.
Backwards compatibility, the ability to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 made the PS3 the definitive system for me. Playing PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3 while having them look and run better was awesome to see and experience. There was a lesser emphasis on digital downloads too, no microtransactions. Sony just tried harder in this era...

I loved my PS3 and I still do. I look back at it with such fond memories. I can not say the same for the ps4 from the day I got it on launch to this very day I am not very happy with it. PS4 basically made me move to being a PC gamer. But back in the PS3 days it was amazing. It was my first multiplayer experience. I adored the XMB. I loved finding random experimental apps that the ps3 had. PlayStation home was one of my most played apps back in the day. My first multiplayer experience was Metal Gear Online and it felt amazing and still looks great to this day even though it was out in 2008. That was the thing that Sony was experimental and tried tons of new ideas which made the experience interesting and kept you looking forward to their next big thing. Today I feel like Sony moves along with everybody else. It all feels the same. I feel like they try hard to please the most basic and dumb audiences around like Nintendo and Microsoft. I will never forget my PS3 days and I still enjoy cutting it on and playing some of its first party titles in my free time.
Glad to see people still mention PS Home. God I wish it never shut down. It was probably the best experiment Sony made. Sadly they couldn’t import everyone’s data to the PS4 which is probably the reason it shut down.
The XMB is the #1 thing I miss! I LOVED it! It was quick, snappy, straight to the point, finding things was easier, storing things onto the hard drive, and it was cleaner looking. I wouldn't mind if they bring it back to PS5 but fixed all of its problems.
I definitely understand you 😩 PS3 has it's own time, just something special about the PS3. And I have always liked the PS3 XMB set-up better than PS4 set-up. And loved that PS3 could import music CD's 💿 & then could save the music to a USB. Plus PS3 could take actual pics from the web, PS4 just has screenshot... 😒 But all in all PS4 is definitely better in visuals but PS3 just had a better set-up. 👍 So im never gonna sell my PS3. Good to have both PS3 & PS4.😄
I used to love my PS3 more as well, but as time went by and the PS4 got more features and games, I got used to it and liked it better. I love the new dualshock, the graphics, being able to take screenshots and videos during gameplay. The PS4 is an improvement in every single aspect in my opinion, though the PS3 will always have a warm spot in my heart.
I agree, the PS3 wasn't bad but I think some people are just getting off on nostalgia or haven't gotten around to play PS4's best games yet like they probably did with PS3. You don't know what you have until you lose it, so maybe it isn't fair to judge a current console when it's probably taken for granted.
theultimaterom That’s why the PS4 has done so well this generation. Although, the PS3 was truly revolutionary and will always be my favorite PlayStation model.

1 - PS3 has free online play
2 - You don't have to install every game you buy
3 - Most games work perfectly fine without download a huge Day-One Patch (and trust me, it's a HUGE pain if you don't have a good internet connection, I had to wait literally 2 days to play some games I bought)
4 - More console exclusive games and split-screen more supported (and usually missing on PC ports), so playing on PC was less convenient for some people, also way more 4-player games to play with your friend, and not just indies.
5 - It can play PS1 games both physical and digital releases, and I used that a lot more than I thought I would do actually
6 - Tons of great PS3/PSP/PSVita interaction features (Cross-Save was an amazing thing, also Cross-Play and Cross-Buy)
7 - It just supported almost every device you plugged in.
8 - PS2 ports were decent (J&D anyonre)
9 - Games didn't have loot boxes or excessive DLC abuse
10 - Overall, AAA games were trying to push the limits and do something new sometimes (Red Faction, LBP, MNR, StarHawk, Blur...) and single player games (or even some local co-op) were a lot more present in libraries, now all we got are greedy soulless multiplayer-only experiences, reskins/clones of already successful games or remakes of old stuff... or indies, which I can play on potato PCs so I don't really need a PS4 for.....Sure ,there are some exceptions nowadays, but last gen the respect for the customer was everyday life.

@@cyclops8238 Amen!
There were some games that needed to be installed, just not completely all of them.
Its because games nowadays are bigger, thats not the ps4's fault
I dont think this is a advantage, the blu ray was very slow and the games that lacked the option to install had very long load times compared to the same game on the 360. What I do like more about this on the PS3 is that the data management is smarter. On modern systems, they just copy everything over from the disc to the hard drive, no questions asked. On PS3 the game installs were tailored to the game experience, meaning that, for example, Ni no Kuni requires installing but only for the language you chosen to run the game, on machines of today they install all languages available on the game even though the user probably will never use most of them, or how Gran Turismo games installed assets for quicker access, but if you didnt had much space, it could run some data from the disc so the game was not in an unplayable state.

i think the jump from playstation 2 to playstation 3 was so drastic, but ps3 to ps4 was really not as prolific of a jump. I don't think hardware improvements really have justified the latest gen of consoles until the last year or two. which is sad considering the current gen consoles for sony and xbox are very quickly reaching the end of their life cycle.

dude you get what you pay for, and honestly the free online feature, eww the ps3s online ecosystem was kinda trashy.

Dude I love my ps3 I couldn't agree more I've only found 8 games I'm interested in on ps4 and it's been out 6 years whereas ps3 I've amassed a collection of 169 games in total (:
I've had a real nostalgia fuelled longing for the PS3 as of late and this video distills everything I loved about the system as an early adoptor and hardcore PS gamer.

The Last of Us
Uncharted Trilogy
Ezio Trilogy
BioShock 1 & Infinite
God of War 3
the Dead Space trilogy
Fallout 3 & New Vegas & Skyrim
Arkham Asylum
It was a golden age of gaming come again, I think.
How many games from this generation are going to be remembered as classics? A couple maybe. Bloodborne, Horizon, GoW, Witcher 3. But... compared to the PS3/360 era, nowhere near as many. And development times are now so long that we've stopped getting trilogies within one generation.
And RDR2
Kai Merk the fuck you have against linear games?
@Michael Ortiz it doesnt have to be an exclusive to be a good game

Xmb was really ahead of it's time and still one of my favourite menu styles
Between 2009-2013 were the best times I had gaming. PS3 was the first console I purchased with my hard earned money, was really into a game I saw on TH-cam called WarhawK and had to have it. from Uncharted to Killzone 2, to Uncharted 2 to Infamous to God of War 3, and so on and so on. Plus the one major thing I loved about PS3 was Playstation Home, just logging on to a game service where I could chat with people about our favorite games and personal lives. The console will always hold a special place in my heart.
I've always found the menu system on the PS4 to be painfully slow by comparison to the PS3.
