You forgot something very important. Something that made me hate myself for chosing a 360 and envying PS3 owners: Disc count. I still recall the game that scarred me for life: Star Ocean 4. You had to switch discs once you got to the end game and wanted to back track to a city in the beginning of the game. If you were achievement hunting, then you constantly were teleporting between the last area of the game and a city on disc 1. And every time.... you had to get up and change disc. And then it came to PS3... on a single disc
The only had a fire multi disc games for the 360, those being Wolfenstin the New Order and FFXIII. I didn’t have an XOne or a PS4 at the time so I had to settle for that. It was stupid and turned me off from going for all the achievements for both games. And Wolfenstein. actually looked really good on the the 360 but when I played it on the One it looked even better
Remember when it was "You had console but friends either didn't, were on a separate console, or were on a different console generation"? Now it's "You got a console but all your friends are one by one slowly moving to PC and the games you play aren't crossplayable". I started with a PS3 at 12, then played on a 360 throughout highschool. Now in college I’m still playing on my PS3. Still love them both, honestly my favorite era of consoles. That and my first PS3 games were the Arkham Asylum and City Bundle.
I have a few gamecube controller extension cables just for this purpose, and even getting it around coffee tables, because it's nice to have six feet of extra cable so everything can lay flat and no tugging at the console or tripping happens, also can be used when getting a larger tv and having to sit farther away from the scene.
The 360E will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first console I ever *owned* properly, and despite it being a bit chonk, People made friends with me for the sole purpose of coming round after school to look at it and play on it.
It's one of those things that's so bad it's good. There are some games that make for a fun afternoon. Granted you'll never play them again. But oh boy that one afternoon will be kinda fun
A big part of the online component was the ability to start parties on XBL that PS3 did not have for a long time. So if you and your friends were playing different games you could still talk to each other. Basically, as soon as you got on Xbox you joined a party or started one.
Also I don't know why the PS community is not used to play MP games, and hang out in chat like the Xbox players. I made so many friend in the Xbox 360 games and I still talk to them today, now I have a PS4 and I still didn't make a single friend. Guess it's a cultural thing? PlayStation players like single player, I guess
@@douglas4934 Nah it was the exact same on the xb1 when I used to play it more. I just think people don't wanna roll the dice on having to talk to annoying people in open lobbies anymore. Half the reason why I sit in parties even if I'm by myself in multiplayer games is because you have to mute like 50% of the people that have a mic, for a variety of reasons (potty mouth 12 year olds, guy sitting too close to the tv, music in the background etc.)
@@douglas4934 In my experience it's because the really annoying online players are enough to make me tune out everyone else. But all online lobbies are annoying so idk why XB fans were able to push through it and PS3 fans not. I was always the kid who avoided the question. "Which do you think is better?" "I have an xbox 360." "You think xbox is better?!" "No, I have one." I never mentioned that I had nearly every single nintendo console at the time.
Minion_Bazz Mario Party 9 and Super Paper Mario I both liked because they both were the first ones in the series I played and I like them even though many people hate their features.
Several things to add to the controller section. There's two different 360 controllers. The wireless model mentioned, but also a hardwired USB model with no wireless. The wireless model is only wireless even with the Play&Charge Kit. Which while USB-A on one end connects to the controller via a proprietary connection. Now non-detachable and proprietary cables weren't a big deal then. However meanwhile the PS3 made standard a controller that worked both wired and wireless with a regular USB port. (And in their and Nintendo's case using standard BT for wireless not a proprietary signal. Yes the most recent Xbox controllers also support BT.)
On top of the controller using AAs, there was no way to turn it off, the only way was to de attach the battery case, which in my case eventually broke off

It’s probably because Xbox had the dominance for most of the gen and PlayStation did a bit of a burst halfway through to catch up and then overtake them. I know a lot of friends I had with 360s who when late gen came around were desperate for metal gear, god of war, ratchet and clank, uncharted, infamous, etc… and a bunch of them did end up getting a ps3 as well because of that
As someone who lived in the former Soviet Union I can safely say that I've never met a person who owned an Xbox. Tbh I didn't even know it existed until I discovered youtube. But you can bet your ass everyone had a ps or a dusty old sega lying around The thing is I doubt xbox was much popular outside the Anglo sphere. It still very much behind playstation here even today, prolly because of its US-centric advertisement
The real issue is that Microsoft has never had much international success with the Xbox consoles. As far as I can tell, the only countries out of the US that really bought any Xbox 360s were the UK and our North American neighbors. Even now that I've graduated college, I've only ever met a single person that has ever owned a PS3. The 360 had a stranglehold over a large portion of the US

very true. grew up in a rural area, and most of the time a family bought a PS2 to sit hooked up in the living room to the shared tv. If the kids happened to have their own gaming console, it was either an older gen system or an xbox 360 with a crt in their bedroom where they would actually play with their friends.
PS3 is also a DVD player. I remember using it back in the day to watch movies. It was very comfortable to use the Dualshock instead of a TV remote control. And it had a very great UI for disk movies.
Numbers of exclusives doesn't matter as much as quality. There's a reason Xbox is still on the map with just 3 memorable exclusives... Halo, GoW and Forza. They were the best exclusives ever on any platform, like c'mon... Halo 3? No platform since has had such a smash hit.

Rare Scott L imo. While the Xbox may not have had as many games come out in it's later years compared to the PS3, you can't underestimate the impact of Halo 3, ODST and especially Reach in the consoles later years. 5:30 The cell processor is very hard to use since it's effectively like having 7 processors that all need to work in sync. You need to distribute the calculations among all 7 and if any get's out of sync the game will crash. Many just didn't want to go through the hassle of optimizing it to use all 7 at once and just used 1 or 2.
@@scratchsoft2347 It was actually even worse for the Saturn. The Cell processor was still a single unit with the same data lines and there was a lot of support. Getting all of them in sync and at full efficiency was really tough especially with only 2 data lanes but there was help. It was kind of like having an 8 core CPU but without all the build in help that CPU's have nowadays. The Cell Architecture though was more versatile as it actually was able to handle graphical data just as easily. It could handle anything the main processor or GPU's had issues with. It was quite a clever system but hard to really use to it's full power. The Saturn had 2 entirely separate CPU's. Not only had they entirely separate data lanes but they didn't even have the same clockspeed with one at 3.1Mhz and the other at 3.3mhz. The PS1 just had one processor at 3.2mhz and the N64 was 9.1mhz (Yes, really.). Getting the two CPU's to share a task was borderline impossible so most Saturn games combine 2D and 3D so that each can do something different and they don't have to be in sync.
@@Lucy-pp6ru This was before multi-core architecture became something that was even used on PC with AMD's Athlon 64 X2 and the 800 series of Pentium CPUs with Intel.

Can't forget how the 360 allowed you to download portions of your physical games so the disc drive had less work load. Can't remember if the ps3 had a similar feature but it's super useful and I still use it to this day.
Some games had an option to install some content in the harddrive, it made loading times fasters and less frequent crashes during online playing. It was no ps3 menu function, you had to search the options menu inside the game
It wouldn't really make much sense to do that on the PS3. The Disc reader was very fast even on the later models. It was actually the hard drive that was the PS3's weakest element. So really putting more strain on the weaker element to save on the stronger one is counterproductive.
@@MrMarinus18 This is partly false, the PS3 actually had a really slow 2X disk drive since the Blu-Ray technology was so new and expensive. Thats why a lot of games had to be installed to the PS3 hard drive where you could play them straight off the disc on 360.

I feel you. The Fallout: New Vegas GOTY edition for the 360 required two discs. The PS3 version had everything in one.

A big part of the online component was the ability to start parties on XBL that PS3 did not have for a long time. So if you and your friends were playing different games you could still talk to each other. Basically, as soon as you got on Xbox you joined a party or started one.
yes, the ps3 never had this until the ps4 came along

Rare Scott L imo. While the Xbox may not have had as many games come out in it's later years compared to the PS3, you can't underestimate the impact of Halo 3, ODST and especially Reach in the consoles later years. While more games would have been nice, the 360 almost didn't need any more games with how replayable all of those titles were.

Scott being mean to the super slim ps3, is like punching my 7 year old self in the face.
I prefer the super slim to the older designs. I like that the disc tray is manual like the PS and PS2 were, doesn't turn on or off by accident. I also like the shiny Sony logo, reminds me of electronics from the 80s that had shiny logos or buttons. The super slim is cheap but certainly not cheap looking.
@@MostlyPonies1 Compared to my 80 GB fats, my super slim lacks: PS2 compatibility, card readers, and nothing else that I'd miss. And that is perfectly fine in my book.
The fat PS3 launch models were my favorite, I loved how you could play PS1 and PS2 games on it.

Funny you should say that, because the US Air Force actually used a bunch of PS3's to build a supercomputer... the more you know...

yea that was when it could run linux right out of the box until sony stopped supporting it
i thought that was ps2 or did they do both?
Wut
@@bongle3726 PS2 did have a Linux port, but you needed an external hard drive and other peripherals to use it. PS3 had Linux pretty much out of the box. Sony removed OtherOS (name of the Linux version) after people found out how to use it to mod their Consoles and potentially run pirated software.
I find it funny how the example of freezing and issues he used was (in my experience) the second most issue ridden game on the PS3, Gran Turismo 6. I've had that game since before the online service went out two years ago, but only just recently began playing it because I never managed to get it to start up adequately. the most issue ridden game on the PS3 to my knowledge is Little Big Planet 3.
Agreed
Gt 6 is a disaster
And that's about the only game i've really had trouble with except minecraft that became too big for ps3 co op
I never had too many issues with GT6 but it was apparent that it was way to large or ambitious to be a PS3 game.
Fallout New Vegas on PS3 was especially bad as well, constant crashing frames below 30, borderline unplayable.
LittleBigPlanet3 singlehandedly destroyed the credibility of the franchise. Even the PS4 version of the game was a nightmare.
Not to mention how the PS3 sounded like a harrier jet when starting up.

The cell processor is very hard to use since it's effectively like having 7 processors that all need to work in sync.
@@MrMarinus18 could they not have just made a dual core system?
I wouldn't either. That sounds terrible. X'D
@@Lucy-pp6ru This was before multi-core architecture became something that was even used on PC with AMD's Athlon 64 X2 and the 800 series of Pentium CPUs with Intel.
Also keep in mind, most consoles didn’t use anything really too awful similar to the processors we use now in PCs. Sometimes consoles would use something of that sort, like the GameCube and Wii used PowerPC processors, but most of them were either custom or other processor companies would help make them.
22:33 The PS3's XMB was so iconic that it's not only used on PSP and the Japanese-Only PSX
It's also used in other Sony Devices like Smart TVs and Blu-Ray Players
You've got that backwards. The XMB originated on the PSX, was then used on the PSP, and then the PS3 and blu-ray players
And RetroArch has it available as well!

@@triplesuperstar meanwhile over at Steam
Charging for online is not a problem. The problem is people want something for nothing. Microsoft’s online service has been better than Sony and definitely better than Nintendo. I don’t think it’s a coincidence considering that’s the one that’s been a paid subscription longest.
Jack Black At least Nintendo knows their service sucks ass, so they sell it dirt cheap.lol
