We have received requests for Nissan SR20 engine content and we shall deliver. Hope you enjoy this teardown. As always we appreciate all of the comments, feedback. Stay tuned for the rebuild and assembly featuring Mazworx in part 2.
@@DirtyDanRacimg I just got into VQs. My commuter Cefiro has a 2.0. I'm looking to find a 3.0 or higher to drop into my Sentra. They're pretty good engines from what I hear.
What amazes me isn't always Jay's knowledge. It's also his humility in situations like this. Where he's openly admitting his LACK of knowledge on a particular engine. People with his experience, level of knowledge, and skill set rarely allow the world to see this side of them. It's refreshing to see Jay still thirst for learning and using his broad experience from OTHER motors to implement on this SR. Hats off to the entire Real Street family. And Happy Holidsys all!!!
Jay would love a series where you guys develop an Sr20det and S-Chassis for drag racing, so much knowledge would be passed on from true legends in the game
As a bit of an SR nut, Hanz got everything right. My first SR I actually killed because of an oil pickup tube failing, but instead of the pan crushing the pickup the strainer actually broke off. Caught it very early and was able to rebuild it but it is a common issue with the S13 SR's.
A little trick on removing that upper sump. There are 2 threaded holes at the back of the sump you can run bolts down into to push off the sump so you don't need to pry it up. Awesome video but!
Owning the same S14 240sx since 2000, most went the easy SR20 route for power, i however said F' the SR20 and kept the KA24DE motor. Rebuilt it with forged internals and got it to 600 crank hp 23 yrs ago. Even the machine shops told me to stick with the KA over the SR20
As an avid admirer of SR20s and having played with them extensively in the early 2000s I reckon they are a great motor for about 350hp and good midrange punch. More than that and high rpm they are buckets of puss...
KA is a sturdy block, but the limitations on the head stud size and availability of fully balanced crankshafts is what is keeping me from wanting to save mine.
@@cherstonwarner2187 thats because most go with the SR20 so everyone ignores the ka which leaves it little to no support that the SR20 has. I only know of 1 person that did 1100 whp on a ka but that was like 15 yrs ago and have not heard from that person since. And i want to say that they did go with a 12mm head stud over the stock 10mm which is what i am using.
Kangaroo stamp is most likely where the parts were made. Sure they may have been put in a japanese model but australia has been building that engine since nissan designed it. It has come in primera, xtrail, pulsar, pulsar sss, sunny III, saber gxi, GTi-R, silvias, sentra se-r, tsuru, and 200sx models worldwide.
1989-1994 "Red top" - Came from U12/13 Bluebird, S13 Silvia and 180SX pre-94 (Garrett T25G turbo) 370cc injectors were used. 1994-1998 "Black top" - Came from 180SX's post-94 (Garrett T25G turbo) 1991-1998 "Black top" - 91-98 Silvias - Variable Cam Timing or VCT was introduced on the intake cam (Garrett T28 journal bearing turbo for Australian and European markets and Garrett T28 Ball Bearing turbo for the Japanese market)[2] 370cc injectors were used. 1995-2002 "Silver top" - 95-02 Avenirs and 97-01 R'nessas. 1999-2002 "Black top" - 99-02 Silvias. Same VCT as above, 6-speed manual transmission (Garrett Journal Bearing T28 for Europe and Australia and Ball Bearing T28 turbo for Japan) 480cc injectors were used and the intake manifold was redesigned.[
Thanks for real detailes content. I am currently taking my SR20 apart. Is there any way I can find out, out of wich family the engine came? I baught an engine that was a cut out and it was sold to us in South Afeica. Really would like to know wher it came out of. Isthere any site I can visit to check the engine number? TIA
What's crazy that most of these new engine builders don't know the science behind that hunk of metal, it's machined to mil specs.. Gotta have them tolerance tools to check for everything to clear.🍿😍
Not worth it tbh. But you’ll need. A built engine and boost about 40psj on e85. Buy an ls 5.3 from a junkyard. Super cheap reliable, and makes a ton of power on stock internals.
Sorry the kid missed a lot of info on the Black Top vs Red top. RED S13/180SX/Bluebird/Pulsar 89-94. Black Top 94-98 S13 plus 25G Turbo 94-2002 S15 then the Silver Top
Lot of misinformation here about the differences and even availability. They continued the S13 production through 1998 (congruent with S14) with the type X, making them VERY common. S13’s production numbers with an SR was around 112,000 just by itself, not to mention S14, S15, and any FWD/AWD applications.
That is so true😞. But hey... they still make jam. Rwd 1/4record is low 6's to my recollection. And fwd 1/4record is in the mid 7's. I haven't given up on them lol.

You guys should try tearing into a vq
It was good to see Hanz I’ve spoke to him a lot for my 2jz build nice to put a face to the voice!!
thanks! great material, more sr20 teardown "tips&tricks"

Like the detailed explanations and how disassembly is done by hand instead of just zapping everything off without much explanation.
Indeed, you are a wonderful man who never stops using the SR20 engine and we are impressed with your explanation and clean work 👌😮💨⚙️
Hanz is the man! I deal with him daily👏👌
Sr20 time...about time
Okay this is nuts. Thank you so much for doing this. So interesting to watch you dissect and teardown an SR20det.
A couple of Nissan SR20's would pull a premium one week before race wars.
We need a vr30ddtt from the new Nissan z. It’ll be cool to see a built engine.
Sr20 vct doesnt break from hp, it break from high spring pressure. Im running 600whp with supertech single springs and have no problem with vct.
SR20 fan-boi in the house!
Jay would love a series where you guys develop an Sr20det and S-Chassis for drag racing, so much knowledge would be passed on from true legends in the game
Why develop a DE when a stock VE head kills even the most heavily modified DE head
They do that in Australia. They got 7 second quarter mile SR20 DETs down there. Bloody insane.
@@conradsealy9603 I'm from Aus, we have one which was developed 10+yes ago, but VE is just better in every way
always love some SR content
As Always, top notch quality videos👌 thanks to jay and the Real St team, now we just need RB and VR content.
I would love to have an engine built from jay it would be bulletproof the steps and details he goes through is incredible
Ah, nostalgia. Miss my blacktop SR20.
Just in time , thanks 🙏

Well sr 20's The Best. The problem I'm having is oil seeps out from my valve cover gasket.. Please advise me to rectify the problem
VR300DDTT next? 👀

Would be good to see Jay’s thoughts on the VVL head….
What would cause the thrust bearing failure, heavy clutch with the clutch depressed for long periods of time??
Awesome
The VCT head and non VCT are completely different in regards to runner style and length too. Hence the different inlet plenums
Yeah hanz!!!
Classic I don’t need a shop to build my motor
