    A big thumbs up to the Mann’s Jelly Worm!!! That smell brings back memories. My first lunker bass (6 pounds) came on a Mann’s Jelly Worm. I’m 61. I was fishing Mann’s Jelly Worms in the late 1960s.

    As a guy whose primary presentations are Texas rigs and jigs, you know I like throwing big worms. Zoom ol' Monsters, Mann's Jelly worms, and even the Googan Slim Shake worms and Mondo worms are what I'm usually throwing at night in the summer time. I even make my own open pour 10" worms that are similar in shape to the bigger Creme Scoundrels. Big worms are just the best worms you can use when night fishing, IMO.

    Another nice video, Matt. IMO, it's important to throw the baits that aren't "Trendy". How many times have we been told that fish get used to seeing the same baits? WELL, this is a perfect time, then, to change things up and throw something that the fish are NOT accustomed to. And, like you said, they are NOT intimidated by a worm (And I think that word, "Intimidation" is very important, here). bass are not only predatory fish, which means they will try to each just about any living creature they can jam down their gullet, they are also PREY to many other animals. So, if you can throw something that 1) Looks like dinner to them 2) They are NOT intimidated by, and 3) Does NOT look like something that they have been caught by, before, then I think you have given yourself a better chance at catching decents bags.

    Try the OSP MMZ in 'Deka' size Matt! Incredible action for a 13inch class worm, most success using it weightless + a 4/0 hook while sight fishing or fishing visible structure. No need to use the 'inu' rig anymore

    Mann's & Power Worms, are 2 of the best. I also throw a 17" straight tail, from Bass Pro. Bought quite a few, years ago. Not sure if they are still available. I put them in the same category as a giant swimbait. If you commit, and have patience, they REALLY pay off. I tend to stitch them SUPER SLOWLY, across deep structures.

    Thanks Matt! The huge worms are obviously very popular down here in Florida. I have some C-Macs and Ol' Monsters I'm ready to throw once this topwater bite slows down :-) . I had to look it up; Mann's started in 1956. Wow. Pity they don't make their 6-inch models any more; that was a staple back in the day. Thanks!

It is one of the baits that is on my "I have to catch something on these!" list. That will be this summer hopefully. Thanks for the video Matt because to tell the truth, I was getting my gear together for a trip next week and I looked at the bag of 10" plus worms and said, nope, waste of space. I’m glad big worms don’t get a lot of attention, it means I can get the colors and particular worms I want without them being out of stock or back ordered. I was convinced big worms worked for all bass when the first bass I caught on a genuinely big worm ( a Mann’s 12” Jelly worm) was barely 1 lb and maybe an inch or two longer than the worm.

    • @richardbossman9875
      @richardbossman9875 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mentioned a few different nature foods that bass might associate with big worms but forgot one of the most obvious, snakes. I’ve seen bass swimming with 6” of a 17” snake hanging out of their mouth and have caught quite a few swimming them on the surface like a snake. I don’t know about up north but down south snakes are definitely a meal of opportunity for bass.

    The “reason” for it being pushed to the side by fisherman is because of the senko and the wacky rig and/or the Neko.

    Jelly worms (Auger tail too) used to make me say: "I love the smell of anise in the morning, it smells like......licorice flavored vagrancy." There is just no reason for it? (Not using plastic) Glad you asked. People want to fish fast, cover water, worms have already been relegated to the slow it down follow-up cast after a short strike. People are in a hurry, and worry, to cover it all, until they need to selectively work it all.

Sure there's times when we stick with certain Baits but I don't know how many times I've caught myself after a trip on the lake saying I should have tried this. it's getting to the point where I need to tow another boat behind me just to hold all my equipment . 🍺Interesting video. I catch big smallmouths both in size and quantity’s with relatively small baits( ned, dark sleeper, hair jig, etc) I catch big largemouths both in size and quantity’s with relatively small baits ( 5” senko, 110 jr, crank baits, chatterbaits, topwater, frogs, jigs, and 7” worms, etc) To each his own but for me bigger in most all techniques does not pencil out except with spoons and glidebaits they are about equal. The only time the “large/long” worms out fish the smaller size for me is when you have a certain bottom make up on your body of water where the short grasses/ vegetation and or muck/mud/soft bottom would potentially “hide” the smaller worm from being seen more easily by the bass as you work the bottom. That’s when I use the larger worms with a noticeable superior increase in bites over the smaller worm.👍

    • @heinrichkellogg7563
      @heinrichkellogg7563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🍺The bigger worms “ work” better in the summer because as I mentioned earlier that’s when the “ bottom” has the most vegetation/muck/ soft bottom and the smaller worms get lost.

    Matt I swim at least three hours a day and after three hours I put it down I don’t hit every lay down but every rock around trees and dragon on the bottom never caught one fish but I put a twisty tail motor oil worm on…..💥💥💥 but anything bigger than I would say 9 inches I believe either I’m not fishing it correctly or these bass or intimidated by a big ass worm like most anglers and if it wasn’t a thing that the beats to Big well why not us all go get 9 inch paddle tails that rockfish hit and throw them in the water and catch a big fish it’s not there Forge

      i would agree once you get to a certain size it starts limiting bites. but its no just about the length but overallframe of the bait. a worm is very slender verse say a bluegill looking swimbait which is tall as wide. but like i always say stick with what you have confidence in!

      Also Matt, I bought the new power Berkeley Gilly I bought the 110 I like it a lot but I believe the way the bed is made unless it is weighed it down. It will stay 6 inches underneath for the water and how they say you can burn it you can burn it and it’s gonna pop up out of the water I believe that a Berkeley Gilly was made as a finesse bait to throw around cover where there’s fish at not to draw fish in!!! But I had two fish grab my Gilly swallowed it when I went to set the hook and barely skimmed its mouth, as long as I kept tension and kept reeling soon as I got him to the boat he jump and shook it right out of his mouth now that’s eight bucks for three of them now I can take a eight dollar plastic Lure in last a lot longer and catch more fish I really believe that this bait was designed in the 90 mm for drop shot because when I put it on a drop shot I caught 3+ 3 Pounders and add to the second fish my Gilly was done

    With such a large worm how can you be sure that the fish has the hook in his mouth and not just pull the worm out?

    Those are little baby stunted worms, you're robing the worm box cradle there. Look at how emaciated the spindly tail is? I got an 18" 1-1/2 dia real straight worm I use a 14/0 hook on. You don't even need to hook them, you just hit them on the head with it.
