If you like that weightless glide action- try the Bacon Rind junior on a free rig. I've been fishing the Bacon Rind creature baits for a long time- my brother bought tons of them right before they got discontinued. I still have several packs and if you're fishing at least semi-deep water- deep enough to throw a free rig and take advantage of that two-stage fall- this bait gets bit. The weight pulls it down a few feet, slides away and hits bottom- and then the bait glides down weightless behind it. It works great for spotted bass- if you know where they are- not the best search bait. Great video- thanks.
Also most brush hawgs have a top side and a bottom side. run them across your finger and if the wings turn out and up that tells you that is the top side of the bait if they turn in it's the bottom side.
My brother won a boat and a lot of tournaments on a c rig green pumpkin or watermelon red zoom brush hog in the post spawn. He had nothing but junk tackle but he paid close attention to his leader length. This video made me smile because I know how effective it is.
Not sure if you would agree, but when I fish those either Texas rigged or Carolina rigged I'm always fishing them on monol so that they have a little more lift and can glide further.
You, Randy Johnny are my nightly routine lol :) I enjoy all the insight and lessons you give for guys like me. Thanks for all you do :) best of luck to all in your tournaments/ recreational fishing
Glad they brought the bacon rind back. Davy Hite won that classic fishing less than a mile from my house, and Denny Brauer came in 2nd a few miles in the opposite direction.
The Flapper and I have an on-again, off-again thing going. It's been "on" lately. I would love to know why that profile can be so good for me at times, and so bad at others. Could it be the angler? Nah! I like the MBP also; something about that shape that just draws bites for me.
Recognized the rind from the thumbnail. I still have some around from when I was in college. Not sure why but I drifted away from creature baits several years ago
As you may know I’m a Yamamoto supporter but you’ve got me about $500 into some Berkley softbaits that I have been slowly trying. If the new Yamamoto owners mess up a good thing I’ll move to team Berkley. I simple use 8” lizards for a large portion of the scenario’s you mentioned in todays video.
The first time that I saw the Zoom Brush Hog the guy using it caught a big channel catfish on one fished unweighted from the bank. I think the catfish was guarding the nest.
Agreed! … run em slow. My brothers been cleaning up with the gilly 90 & 110. I’ve done real well with the deps cover scat! Just got a bag of the 2.5” scat, that’s gonna kill for small-smalls
i m here in northern illinois. March was a great month for my local private pond. Water was cleaner and caught big 17” monster bass on drop ehot with missile baits Ned bomn. April good month. May: TERRIBLE. Same pond. Plenty of blow ups but regardless of what I cast ( drop shot, crankbiat, suspending jerkbait, senko, swimbait, ned ridg) but no bite. I did see some bluegill being chased and then get eaten. What has happened in May besides terrible weather and no heat
Hey Matt. Really off the wall question for you if you don’t mind. I know it has nothing to do with tackle of baits but I know your into helping people with info, tips and tricks so here it goes. What’s a good deep cycle battery brand that I can run my fortrex with? Something I can walk in and grab off the shelf basically. I only run the fortrex on my battery’s. No other electronics or discharges at all. I’m running group 29’s now that are only a year old and they quit on me. My fault. Didn’t store them properly over the winter. Oh I should of specified. Either led acid or a inexpensive decent AGM? Thanks bubba. Appreciate all you do. 🤙🏼
ive never found a good battery until i started running battle born lithium. well worth the investment. my advice to you if wanting to stay with lead acid and AGM would be to buy one that has a good warranty program.
Those hard high pressure days in the dead of summer are excellent for those as well, Zoom brush hog in the grass on a Texas rig is a really good tournament technique, it’s really unfortunate how forgotten these baits are.
Lanier has such a large population of both spots, Lmb, stripers that somebody is always chasing bait, throwing shallow cranks and covering bank will get you bit alot.
Another awesome video Matt, this year has been on fire for me so far I just caught another almost 6lber at Tycoon Lake the other day, and I really appreciate the tips they have helped me tremendously this year!
Question boss. I normal use 6 inch worms and lizards shaky head or Texas rig. If I go to 10 inch worm or 8 inch lizard does the hook set change. I mean do I wait longer to cross eyes or same temple as smaller baits?
My favorite creature bait has always been the Gene Larew HooDaddy. No wings but it does have a thick ribbed body that’s great for holding scent and weedless rigging the hook. It might be discontinued too but I have a box full of them. I also have a few old packs of Bacon Rinds in my “Don’t use no more “ box that I’m got have to dig out and move into starting rotation . 👍
Great explanation of these baits! I have had good success with the Brushhog on a C rig for many years during this time and into early summer. Thanks for the tips.
Hero's in may and early june ! Zeros in july and aug !! Lmao !. Matt alot of guys get carried away during the spawn ! It's funny! Thanks 4 all you do !!!!
What rod would you use for these baits, Matt? I must be honest here in that i don't really know the difference between a fast action rod, etc. I only fish medium heavy rods( Shimano)mainly but i am not sure which is best. I also would like you to advise us on which rod to buy that is most versatile without breaking the bank.
here is a video i did on rod actions that might help. th-cam.com/video/_Xy7vVQ5nbI/w-d-xo.html As for a rod to buy. i build all my own so i dont really have a mass produced recommendation for you. sorry
For me, this is where the pit boss has shined. But it's a similar type of plastic, so that makes sense. I've been fishing it along vegetation seams and creek channels and been able to coax some nice fish into really hitting it.
Dude my problem is i dont know ever know what time of year and when to throw the soft baits i have about every soft bait possible from worms all the way to craws to creature baits to flukes to hog bush to zoom horny Toad black and white for christ sake. but dude every time im fishing im like what the hells i throw this time to get 1 single bass or channel cat to bite???
I remember the Bacon Rind, believe it got it big boost by the angler that worked at Ranger Boats. Been using the Zoom brush hog when around bigger fish and baby brush hog for lots of hits. They are great for Carolina rigs. Thanks
Haven't seen the bacon rind in a long time. Use the other 2 all the time. Tip that tail with chartreuse. Gold this time of year. Really enjoy your channel!
This is the period that I REALLY like the Deps bullflat. Especially in the 4.8-5.8 size. I also like a big creature on a swinging jig head, but on a lighter head for a slower presentation. For this year, I want to try the OSP Dolive beaver magnum. Should be a killer bait!
I’m going to have to put some bacon on my buzz bait. I bet it would work well on top too with the gliding ability. Thanks Matt. Always solid stuff. 👊🏼🎣
Matt, what is the benefit of using such a heavy sinker? Is it just for speed and efficiency? I generally fish a brushhog with a 3/16 and a baby brushhog with a 1/8-3/16 in water up to 20 ft. I realize it takes a tad longer to fall to 15-20ft but they glide even better with the lighter sinker. In clear water I occasionally fish a heavier sinker to try to draw more of a reaction bite but generally fish it with a smaller sinker.
i prefer using lighter if possible but will upzise my weight basded on depth, thinckness of cover, water clarity, and some days the fish just want a fast fall to generate reaction strikes.
I tell you something definitely not right with bass for the month May, not able to get a bite hardly, but you just explained it thanks, the zoom brush hog is one of my favorites, but I just recently bought googan squad trench hog, but have not thrown it yet in summer craw color! 👍
This yrs post spawn has been hero or zero for me so far. It is my first spawn down here in SC. Yesterday I was a zero. Last week I caught a limit plus a 7 pounder. Previous weeks is been similar either I catch them really really good or only a couple small ones. I still have alot learn about these new fisheries but that's half the fun of it anyway. Definitely have try some creature baits. I've been fishing swimbaits & worms or craws
Definatly gonna have to try the bacon rind, ive always been a big fan of the jr brush hog. I never hear it mentioned but I also think it makes a good and different trailer for jigs or anything. The first time I saw the magic of a jackhammer was the first time I put a jr brush hog on it.
You've pretty much got it covered. I'll have to get four or five packs of those gamblers. The one method you missed was split shot'n it, I like about 24". Old school I know.
Thanks Matt! Gambler baits are awesome - especially if you like garlic. :-) . I've done very well with creatures since the spawn ended here in Florida. The midsize Brush Hog is very good. My other favorites are the Reaction Innovations Man Bear Pig and Missile Baits' Baby D-Stroyer. Thanks again!
Thanks for the great tip!!!!👊🏻 Will have to give it a try this season. Maybe the Godfather from Missile Baits would be another good one!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!
Deps Sakamata shad 5" weightless with a 5/0 heavy wire hook produced my biggest post spawn bass this year
ill check it out
This is such good info not even sure if people have a clue how good.
thanks! lots of good info in this one!
If you like that weightless glide action- try the Bacon Rind junior on a free rig. No problem

Thank you i have never thought about that
you bet!
Once I heard Gambler was making the Bacon Rind again I bought a boat load in case they stop making them again. 👍🏻
haha!
Not sure if you would agree, but when I fish those either Texas rigged or Carolina rigged I'm always fishing them on monol so that they have a little more lift and can glide further.
I will use monofilament as a carolina rig leader to get the lift, but fish them on fluorocarbon with a texas rig.
I use them on a wobble head this time of the year. Crawling it on the bottom. Definitely going to give ur way a try. Sound good.
Sounds great!
man bear pig has always been good to me. Thanks for the content
You bet
You, Randy Johnny are my nightly routine lol :) I enjoy all the insight and lessons you give for guys like me. Thanks for all you do :) best of luck to all in your tournaments/ recreational fishing

Glad they brought the bacon rind back. Davy Hite won that classic fishing less than a mile from my house, and Denny Brauer came in 2nd a few miles in the opposite direction.
thats awesome!
Mad Paca and the Man Bear Pig are two more baits that are worth trying if ya LOVE creature baits.
awesome thanks for sharing!
Keitech Crazy Flapper and the Reaction Innovations Man Bear Pig are both awesome

Take a look at the 10,000 Fish Zuchi Bug.
will do!
Recognized the rind from the thumbnail. I still have some around from when I was in college. Not sure why but I drifted away from creature baits several years ago
creature baits catch giants!
This will have to be tied up just hitting this spawn post spawn deal here in northeast thanks for helping me with this bite
good luck!
I use bigger profile baits like the head hunter, bellows gill, and bigger size gilly.
thanks for sharing!
10000 fish zucchini bug is going to get a try as well as these other baits matt mentioned
ill give them a try!
Definitely will make a note of this. I've still got Bass and brim on beds right now in SW PA
awesome!
actually i got some of the bacon rinds in purple not long ago, i call it my lil draggin dragon 😉 c-rig beast mode activated
hahaha!
I've done the most damage on the manbearpig by reaction innovations when it comes to baits like the brush hog.
thanks for sharing!
Still have a box full of bacon rinds. 🤙🦀🌴
awesome!
🍺Just picked up 20 bags of 7”, 8.5”, and 10” Berkley power worms thru your link.
Awesome! thanks so much! Hold on the fish eat those up!

nothing like a big catfish
Don't used them much. Thanks Matt
give'em a try!
Instead of using a Texas Rig. I prefer a "free Rig". I think the lure glides a little bit better
they work great as well!
Agreed! … run em slow. My brothers been cleaning up with the gilly 90 & 110. I’ve done real well with the deps cover scat! Just got a bag of the 2.5” scat, that’s gonna kill for small-smalls

The brush hog filled that void for me after the bacon rinds were disco'd, but VERY excited that they're back

probably post spawn blues mixed with bad weather

What about magnum ribbon tail worms on a Carolina rig? Do you think that would trigger a similar response?
it can be a good replacement
Nice tips , soft plastics my favorite bass catching baits. Thanks for the video. !

Ive had luck this year on the full size brush hog on a 5/0 ewg with just a nail weight in the head. Lets the bait fall slow and level.
The Brush Hog is a classic for good reason.
awesome!
Hmmmmm I got some brush hogs never tried them much guess I will thanks sir
go for it!

Good luck!
great tips bro!
thanks!

What are your favorite colors for our clear lakes up here?
i like green pumpkin black flake, blue flake, purple flake, or red flake.

I have never pegged a Texas rig. I get a lot of bites, but I’m wondering if I could get more
I prefer unpegged if i can get away from pegging
I’ve been messing around with JDM plastics and I have had pretty good fishing with the Deps Bull flat, Geecrack Spiron and the OSP dolive gill.
yep those are all on ym list of baits to use more as well!
Nice video. Question, do you pull the front appendages off the main body of the Zoom brush hog? Thanks.
