  • The shaky head worm is an amazing bait for catching bass. If you know how to use them effectively you can catch big bass too! While most anglers have a few shakey heads, few realize how dialed in you can get with the technique. Today we're diving into worm types, colors, and head designs to make you a much better worm fisherman!
    Whether you throw a shaky head every trip, or just occasionally pick up a plastic worm, this video is going to help you hone your fishing skills. Subtle differences make a huge difference in the actions of the worms and how bass react to them. Pay close attention to which head styles Matt uses for which worms, and when he makes changes.
    Below you'll find links to the exact baits in the order Matt discusses them, along with the different heads and gear he uses to fish these baits effectively. We've also included our favorite colors and sizes for each worm. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

    It would be interesting to see how you store and organize all your baits. As I was watching this video about shakey heads, I was thinking how do you keep track of all the heads sizes, different styles, worm colors, ect. I imagine you have a system and I bet we could all learn from seeing it.

    Matt: "For the guy that doesn't want to dive down this rabbit hole with me..." . Roughly 99 percent of viewers: "Rabbit hole, rabbit hole, rabbit hole!" . :-) . Seriously, I think that presenting the "why" behind the simple "use this head" in such a logical and eloquent manner is part of what sets Tactical Bassin apart from so many others on TH-cam. Once you dive down that Rabbit Hole you see not only the various paths to success that are available to you, you also gain an appreciation of how much research and trial and error goes into these instructional videos. Thanks as always for a great presentation, Matt, and I hope you and Tim have a fantastic time tackle-geeking at ICAST.

    My introduction to bass fishing as a teenager was the Texas rigged Culprit curly tail worm. And they are still a staple today at 50. I think you could probably rig them hookless and still land fish. Not saying I don't fish other worms, but I just have a huge amount of confidence in Culprit products.

    Next video: you bankfishing with Sierra! My favorite all-time fishing memory is bank-fishing with my son when he was 8 years old on a small private pond at a house we were renting on the Maryland shore. I brought all this saltwater gear, caught nothing all week. But every day we went to that pond early evening, caught HUGE bass on small spinnerbaits and Senkos. And that Culprit curly tail bait also slayed. It ignited a passion for fishing in my son that he has to this day. And he still kicks my ass nearly every outing throwing those Senkos while I am switching out baits every 5 minutes. Great vid, will definitely help me dial in my shaky head approach.

    love the video thank you. i have fallen in love with the shaky head and use it often. One private lake I fish has giant fish in it. I caught an 8lber last month. I also have the 852 NRX+ rod that I use most oftern. Problem is that I have lost 3 giants while using that rod and the canterbury head. it has not broken but i obviously did not get enough of the hook in them. My question is should I go to a heavier rod to be able to work those fish and get better hook sets? Those big fish I have never felt like I had control of them while fighting. 2 this year were potential double digit fish that have just come off. thank you again, love the videos.

    I'm always curious as to when you choose a shaky vs a Texas rig? Seems a pegged tx rig is basically the same thing? How do you choose which to throw under what conditions?

    • @charlescooper5248
      @charlescooper5248 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shakeyheads will stand up a worm much better naturally, pegged Texas rig comes through heavy cover far better, but does not quite do as good for standing up a worm, but will definitely help. Unpegged and small hops will let the worm separate from the weight and sink down slowly. Hope this helps!

      @hunternixonfishing2500 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on what worm you throw you can still simulate the same action with a pegged Texas rig as you would a shakey head. For example one of my favorite worms on a Texas rig is the Z-man bang stickz and because of the buoyancy of the ZMan plastic I can get that worm to stand up on a pegged Texas rig as I would if I fished it on a shakey head

    Ordered the SMH wormz from TW. Wasn’t a fan, lot smaller that I thought, returned them. The berkley MaxscEnt magnum hit worm is a better option if you can find em

      The one specific to shaky heads is about 3 years old. th-cam.com/video/sIEBp9WTuXA/w-d-xo.html . They have an entire playlist of underwater videos, though; I believe some of these worms are shown there as well. Good luck out there!

    And some think the shakey head just catches small to mid size bass but just like I tell them Matt just proved that it will catch large mouth bass bucket lip bass 🎣

    I have a medium heavy 705-1 MBR edge rod. Would that be good for a bigger shaky head set up?!

    I’ve done very well this year with a zoom magnum trick worm or any 6 inch senko style bait with a 1/4 oz owner shakey head. I like a med heavy spinning rod with 12 lb leader.

    I ordered some 4" creme scaundrel worms been, around since 1979 . What size Shakey head hook would suite those worms ? What odd hook and size ? I'm confused.

    Thank you for the information. Going to try some of your go to heads. What spinning rod would recommend for the technique? Looking in the $150-$200 range. Mostly fishing a tmac or trick worm.

    I like the Canterbury NSMH heads and B-lat’s worms work great and actually his worms from Z man we’re good with other hooks long as they don’t have a hook keeper screw lock and you’re right what works for me and the five size is when I’m casting in Open water and throwing out off of points and I’ll just shake that son of a gun back up the point until I get hit but I love your description of how you put everything I wish I had a friend like you to go fishing with that’s what separates people in this world you got great people but we’re needle in a haystack compared to groups of people that rally around one another’s happiness and support each others happier outcomes I love Maryland born and raised but when it comes to fission I’m not a salt water man I love bass freshwater fishing and I just started tournament fission five years ago, and I’ve been fission my whole life just never this serious I just wish we had more lakes that could use gas motors electric is good cheap but not want to comes to bass equipment or equipment. It’s expensive just to get you a nice 36 V system with a fishfinder and it’s not good to go out for two weeks and get skunked something just isn’t right especially when Herron Maryland March of this year the water was running good and I caught a lot of fish is post spawn has kicked my butt !

    I use 2. The Canterbury head and the Trokar Scorpion football head. I wish Dirty Jigs made the Canterbury head in a 5/16 or heavier. The Canterbury comes through brush piles way better. Here in these Spotted Bass lakes in Georgia/South Carolina, brush piles is where it’s at!

    20yrs ago My partner and I made a lot of money on a shaky head. 3/16oz with a finesse worm. Owner makes the best head on the market. We poured our own for years. 3/16oz with 4/0 hook is hard to beat. When we were keeping it a secret. It’s amazing how something like a big jig head has done what it has accomplished in 20+yrs.

    I love the 1/8 or 3/16 oz owner shaky head with a 4.5 or 6 inch roboworm. Throw it on a megabass destroyer p5 bfs rod and a 70 sized reel spooled with 6lb straight flouro

    I can say shakeyheads have changed my fishing probably more than anything in the last 5 years, one different but awesome worm I found was the Grandebass Airtail. It has the blunt face like the Netbait T-Mac but the tail is hollow and this worm will truly stand on its head with the right jig head.

    • @oldeschoolbob1022
      @oldeschoolbob1022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like the Big Bite Squirrel Tail. I am taking some of those Tapeworms out with me tomorrow. They look interesting, but come in a package that's about, oh, 5 times too large. lol..small thing if they catch fish.

      When finesse fishing I throw them on an Arkie jigs U-bolt head, basically a wobblehead using a ball head and normal ( non-widegap) worm hook.

      When referencing the Arkie Ubolt jig heads I was saying they are good on the smaller worms like the Grandebass airtail ( or basically any 6”-7” finesse worm”.

    4.0 shaky with a culprit worm is a big confidence bait for me

  • @davidmann9467
    @davidmann9467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The general guideline I use is that the hook shank should be no more than 1/3 the length of the worm.
    I think that's about what you're doing when you pair the hook sizes with those baits.
