This reminded me of Joker's quote from The Dark Knight: 'In their last moments, people show who they really are.'
When you die, you should die like a warrior holding a sword to get into Valhalla. When Bjorn died, he didn't think about Valhalla, he grabbed Askeladd. When Ragnar(christian) died, we can see him slowly reaching to grab his sword
In a few earlier episodes, we can see Thorkell talking to Ragnar and the Prince about Valkyries and the glory of a warrior's death

Thors kinda used the idea of Vinland In the way you described but Leif always talked about it as a real place that he himself had discovered as he did. Thors wanted to some day go there but obviously couldn't. Since only Leif and the people he was with when he went there had seen it, Vinland does sound like a paradice to those whom it is described to as a warmer and more fertile land without wars and horrors of the lands they live In. So Vinland is a physical place but also a sort of heaven. Also it is SO far away geograficly In their time that to most people it might as well not exist.
