Hey everyone! Here's my reaction to episode 18 of Vinland Saga! Well, things REALLY escalated in this ep! So far, Canute has been the only one on this show who really feels "good" enough to cheer for....and well....I think this world has finally changed him. And no, he hasn't been turned cold or ruthless, but he has accepted some very....interesting...ideas about love that have skyrocketed him into King Mode!!! That last scene....as much as I was worried about him, gotta say, he looked like a boss there! Also, Thorfinn got airborne!!! That can't be good!!! I have no clue where things are going and if/when we will get to Vinland, but I'm having fun with the journey! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Willibald is refering to specific type of love, which used to have many words and concepts in greek and older languages, and the sort he seeks is what he as a christian was taught was "purest form of love (agape i think?)" such as the sort the myths says Yahweh has for all of creation, which according to christian mythology is impossible for humans outside of rare moments, and aside from Christ who was the only 'human' capable of this unbiased all encompassing type of love. Though one doesnt need to be christian to understand these concepts, thats how it is framed from Willibald's perspective, and why he reacted to the story of Thors, who is depicted as christ like atleast in how he died.
Canute, realizing the impossibility of humans living this way at all times, with no self interest or biased nature of any kind and being 'pure love', he lashes out at this realization and resigns himself to try to recreate it in his own way if God wont give it to them. Also this parallels his relationship with his biological father, the king, and coming to terms with rebelling against his real father in the same breathe in order to create a more just world than what his father has.

5:08 > I thought Thorfinn was the main character but maybe it's Askeladd
Canute: you don't seem to understand, this is my story now.

What is a true warrior? And what is love?
The mission of Torfin and Knut is ultimately the same.

The priest basically says that true love means that you have no expectations from someone else and you still love everyone the same. No matter if they hate you, if they stole from you or if they are your siblings, parents, boss etc. True love doesn’t discriminate and makes no difference between people.
And Canute rightfully realizes that this is impossible. People will always judge and favour some people over others. So when god is saying that you should love everyone Canute realizes that this can’t ever work out. He is disappointed that he believed all his life in godand his word despite reaching gods „goal“ is impossible. Therefore he decides to create something resembling peace (through politics and therefore also violence) which may come closest to what god wants them to be (because people who live in peace are closer to loving everyone then people who are afraid, right?)
