In an interview, the mangaka was asked if there was a time where he felt that a character was writing themselves. He picked up the manga and pointed to the panel where Askeladd yells "Stay back, Thorfinn!" and pretty much says how Askeladd saves Thorfinn and didn't want Thorfinn to get wrapped up in his 'insanity'. The more I think about it, it would seem like Thorfinn would have joined the fight to try to get Askeladd out of the situation he put himself in, all so Thorfinn could get a proper duel later. Askeladd didn't want Thorfinn on his side labeled as a traitor to the crown, so he tried to save Thorfinn by telling him to stay back and not get involved, which distracts himself into getting stabbed. I think the mangaka said as much, but I think that shows Askeladd cared about Thorfinn. Hope you enjoy Season 2 as much as I did~

My personal theory on that bird scene with thorfinn on the boat is that its supposed to represent his innocence starting to come back slightly and him realizing what hes done, but then it flying away when it was just within his reach is him almost relapsing into his old ways, hence him running away for revenge again

You’ve made it! This OST “Ahead of the Road” makes me cry everytime! This is JUST the prologue…. Remember that. Askaladd has MAD RESPECT, Throfinn’s journey has been an excruciating path (but there’s hope) in a messed up way, he’s lost 2 fathers… and the whole story is PEAK!! This is the reason why Vinland Saga is in my top 3, if not my top 1 anime 🔥 and it won Anime of the year in 2020. I can’t wait for you to experience season 2!!! I read this theory on Tumblr it isn't something I wrote myself but it resonates. Although I do think the relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd is very complex and it's a mix of Thorfinn losing his purpose, having to face all his actions (working/travelling with/under Askeladd and his men to this point) but also I agree with this post which I will copy and paste that I saw on Tumblr, I don't know who wrote it so can't credit them etc but this is it: **SPOILER** I thought this scene showed Thorfinn at his most human. Thorfinn hated Askeladd but once he witnesses Askeladd’s death Thorfinn realises that this man he hated is somehow important to him. The very man who killed his father. Who he wished to kill. He must now watch die at the hands of another. But instead of relief he is filled with pain and emptiness. At first Thorfinn believes this is because he has been denied the revenge he sort for years. Thorfinn survived those years because of his hate for Askeladd. And now that the source of his hate and revenge are gone he has nothing. But it is also more than that. Thorfinn has now spent the majority of his life following Askeladd and because of this Askeladd has unintentionally played a pivotal role in Thorfinn’s upbringing. So it in no wonder that Thorfinn struggles to understand his own emotions at the death of this man who killed his father. Thorfinn is reliving what was done to him years ago by Askeladd. He is witnessing the death of his Father for a second time. And like before he is powerless to stop it. - End of post My opinions to add: Now why i also agree with this, is how Thorfinn (and Askeladd) reacts to the situation, although subtle the clues are there, firstly Thorfinn runs to him and tries to join in to help Askeladd, (this could be a mix of still wanting the duel, or/and complex Stockholm syndrome of wanting to help him, he's lived and grew with him since being 6 years old, and is the most familiar person to him, in retrospect he's spent more of his life with him, than in Iceland with his own family at this point) which Askeladd tells him no stop, as he doesn't want to drag Thorfinn into the said situation (subtle care on askeladds side, as not wanting Thorfinn to be punished for his actions) Then after he's stabbed, Thorfinn runs and catches him and holds him, he doesn't let Askeladd hit the floor, which is what you would do to someone you view as an enemy. Askeladd even tells Thorfinn to kill him there and then, to which Thorfinn starts screaming basically telling him not to die, (albeit you could argue that he's also saying the duel wasn't supposed to be like this etc etc, but if you knew the person who you truly viewed as your enemy and the person you wanted revenge on was dying anyway, I doubt you would be screaming at them telling them to get up, to live basically and not die) As Askeladd is dying instead of saying something cruel or witty to Thorfinn, hes gentle in his last moments and gives words of encouragement, and wisdom, for Thorfinn to find a purpose and live peacefully like his father intended, he also uses Thors name (something he pretended he'd forgot in earlier episodes to make Thorfinn lose his temper) which shows Askeladd just how much an impact Thors must of had on Askeladd, considering he never really forgot him, remembered what he was like/stood for, and that was a whole 10-11 years or so prior to this moment. Then when he dies, and it shows Thorfinns face it's a face of utter grief stricken (as if he's just lost a loved one), and despair of losing his whole purpose/identity thus far. The face he lunges at Canute, some people will say it's because he "took his kill/revenge" Imo I think it's deeper than that, due to the montage of the shots, Leif was there when Thors died Leif is in town now when Askeladd dies. The shots and panels of the white around a dying Thor's and a dying Askeladd are extremely close in nature, lunging at Canute I think had more to do with replacing him as the "new Askeladd" in Thorfinns mind at that point, he's just killed the man he grew up of 10 years. Then the last thing which tops it off for me The dagger. As he's being dragged back away from the Room/Askeladds body, his very precious dagger (a weapon) his father gave him, he drops it and instead reaches out towards Askeladd with his hand, I think this shows how he's lost his rage and revenge in that moment, and instead is grief stricken and realises he actually in fact does care for this dead man he so badly wanted to get revenge on all these years. And the showcasing of the journey in the blade shows the end of that era. Everything is very interpretational, but when he runs off the boat from Leif, a lot will say he's still going for revenge. Again imo the way he acts in that moment, reminds me of a lost child, running to their guardian to seek some sort of guidance (mixed with Stockholm syndrome as again Askeladd and that way of life is all he's known for the past 10 years) Under the guise of this revenge, because of a lack of any other purpose. I absolutely love Vinland Saga, and the complexities of each character, they feel organic and real. I can not wait to watch you delve into the second season Swanii, and see all your theories and theory crafting. I'm particularly looking forward to your reaction to two episodes mainly in that season. And the edit of the opening was absolutely beautiful and emotional. You did a good job.

22:59 His mesage to Thorfinn about "don't stay in a place like this" is very much a nod to Askelladd living and dying in that cycle of hate filled violence, he stayed "in a place like this", becoming what he hated "a Viking". Askelladd is a cautionary tale for Thorfinn.
Vinland Saga is waaay ahead of its time. This will only get better as we age too because of how well written the dialogs are and how fast anime pace of time is vs pace of life for us. Bits of Vinland dialogs can relate to us at different times of our life hitting us differently at a different time. Vinland Saga cemented itself in the legendary status for me. I hope season 3 comes around soon..
Personally I think Askeladd didnt want to say sappy stuff to Thorfinn so that he doesnt get hung on him. He wanted Thorfinn to forget about him and move on with his life...

I hope you will watch until the end this beautiful story that I love the most. Anyway, Askeladd was Thorfinn's hated enemy, but he was also Thorfinn's second father. He is as important a person in Thorfinn's life as Thors, and one of the best anime characters! Rest in peace.
It’s still hard to believe that that ENTIRE season, the entire story so far, has just been prologue. It makes me excited to see the story they’ll build on top of such a well executed prologue. The king wanted to beat up wales because they were resisting, floki saw askeladd’s reaction to this. That’s how they knew about wales and askeladd. Basically just coincidence.

A small detail that I noticed, at the end of the first season they showed some characters that will appear only in season 3 with the exception of one, either they wanted to add them in season 2, or they just showed it is unclear
Askeladd also said "Stay back" to save Thorfinn. He knew that Thorfinn would try to save Askeladd until Thorfinn kill him in a formal duel. But if Thorfinn dared to try that, he would also be a traitor against Denmark, making his public execution will inevitable. To save Thorfinn, Askeladd couldn't let him join in.
@@officialswanii Unfortunately Askeladd couldn't see himself as a King. He thought of himself as a Viking and unworthy of the Artorius title. Ironically by sacrificing his life and taking up his true name he was able to "become Artorius" in his final moments.
So, about whether or not Askeladd is the legitimate king, is more so a question of who you represent and what you believe to be legitimate within the context and state of the country. Since Askeladd inherited the blood of the Romans, who were pushed out of Britannia at the time, he does posses the blood of the former rulers of what is at this point in time, England. But anyone can proclaim themselves king of any country, which is what Saxons did, and the Romans before them, and the Celts before them. But yeah, logically, Askeladd has as good a claim as any, and he is the embodiment of the tale of Artorious beating back the savages and bringing back Britannia.
Glad to have found your channel on this season finale, seems you have a deep understanding of the characters. Please allow me to recommend a hidden gem of an anime that deserves way more fame. Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation). *Genre* The genre will be completely new to you but is actually a very developed and fleshed out in Chinese media. It's the low-Cultivation genre, comparable to high/low fantasy of the west. Cultivators are people who improve themselves spiritually through martial arts and meditation in order to achieve immortality (in low-cultivation, immortality is a legend, so the viewer doesn't know if it's possible), and they exorcize demons on the side. It is also drama/mystery/greek tragedy. *Story* This is a story about benevolence/resentment, love/loss, fall/revenge. The story begins at the end (not a spoiler), our protagonist is a powerful cultivator who abandoned the spiritual path and invented the demonic path and is feared by all, but is killed by people he loved. Then the rest of season 1 goes through how a righteous young man, due to various twists of fate, became the big bad guy who betrays everyone he loves and loses everything. There are various funny moments of character interactions, heartwarming moments of few people who still believe in the protagonist, but mostly tragic moments of fate toying with people in every arc. *Characters* All side characters are well written and memorable. Main characters are some of the most complex I've seen. I would put the character complexity for the main characters in S+ tier. *Music* Some of my favorite music of all time. Very different than what you're used to, but the quality is comparable to Attack on Titan etc. *Animation* Made by Tencent (China's Apple) so they have infinite money and it looks gorgeous. This show is so fucking good at making you feel the rawness of human emotion. How the fuck did they make us feel emotional over somebody that the main character is supposed to want to kill. I mean they just wrote it so perfectly.
I think the reason why askeladd didn’t tell thorfinn that floki is the one who ordered him to kill thors is because askeladd wanted thorfinn to move on
About the thing of Askeladd being the legitimate king, being one of the blood line (apparently) of THE Artorius... well, yes and no. I mean, per se even his being a real heir has little to no weight, referring to a state that was around a good 400 years earlier, and honestly even historically in that time frame a lot of people with even less big names to back them managed to strike it big, even becoming kings (in that regard Askeladd's plan of sort-of becoming a shadow eminence using the future king Canute isn't so crazy). BUT having said name and bloodline, and being able to prove it at least partially, would have been a big bonus in aggregating all the regional powers of Britain against foreigner conquerors they really don't like. Usually all those people spent their time warring against each-other, but with a LUCIUS ARTORIUS CASTUS with certified bloodline, they could have thought "better this guy from here than some bastard from beyond the sea" and band around him against the normans
I think Askeladd told Thorfinn to stay back because he would have not attacked Askeladd but rather the guards so they could get out of there and duel later. It would have ruined the plan and also implicated Thorfinn in the treason of attacking the king.
It wasn't a heart hit. As you said, that would have dropped him in at most a couple seconds as blood pressure rapidly dropping would have made him grey out. That was a lung hit -- every bit as lethal, especially back then, but allowing him up to minutes of consciousness as the lung filled with blood. The author undoubtedly researched this, since he's researched the hell out of everything else.

You’ve made it! This OST “Ahead of the Road” makes me cry everytime! This is JUST the prologue…. Remember that. Askaladd has MAD RESPECT, Throfinn’s journey has been an excruciating path (but there’s hope) in a messed up way, he’s lost 2 fathers… and the whole story is PEAK!! This is the reason why Vinland Saga is in my top 3, if not my top 1 anime 🔥 and it won Anime of the year in 2020. I can’t wait for you to experience season 2!!! I read this theory on Tumblr it isn't something I wrote myself but it resonates.
Although I do think the relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd is very complex and it's a mix of Thorfinn losing his purpose, having to face all his actions (working/travelling with/under Askeladd and his men to this point) but also I agree with this post which I will copy and paste that I saw on Tumblr, I don't know who wrote it so can't credit them etc but this is it:
**SPOILER** I thought this scene showed Thorfinn at his most human. Thorfinn hated Askeladd but once he witnesses Askeladd’s death Thorfinn realises that this man he hated is somehow important to him. The very man who killed his father. Who he wished to kill. He must now watch die at the hands of another. But instead of relief he is filled with pain and emptiness. At first Thorfinn believes this is because he has been denied the revenge he sort for years. Thorfinn survived those years because of his hate for Askeladd. And now that the source of his hate and revenge are gone he has nothing. But it is also more than that. Thorfinn has now spent the majority of his life following Askeladd and because of this Askeladd has unintentionally played a pivotal role in Thorfinn’s upbringing. So it in no wonder that Thorfinn struggles to understand his own emotions at the death of this man who killed his father. Thorfinn is reliving what was done to him years ago by Askeladd. He is witnessing the death of his Father for a second time. And like before he is powerless to stop it. - End of post
My opinions to add:
Now why i also agree with this, is how Thorfinn (and Askeladd) reacts to the situation, although subtle the clues are there, firstly Thorfinn runs to him and tries to join in to help Askeladd, (this could be a mix of still wanting the duel, or/and complex Stockholm syndrome of wanting to help him, he's lived and grew with him since being 6 years old, and is the most familiar person to him, in retrospect he's spent more of his life with him, than in Iceland with his own family at this point) which Askeladd tells him no stop, as he doesn't want to drag Thorfinn into the said situation (subtle care on askeladds side, as not wanting Thorfinn to be punished for his actions)
Then after he's stabbed, Thorfinn runs and catches him and holds him, he doesn't let Askeladd hit the floor, which is what you would do to someone you view as an enemy.
Askeladd even tells Thorfinn to kill him there and then, to which Thorfinn starts screaming basically telling him not to die, (albeit you could argue that he's also saying the duel wasn't supposed to be like this etc etc, but if you knew the person who you truly viewed as your enemy and the person you wanted revenge on was dying anyway, I doubt you would be screaming at them telling them to get up, to live basically and not die)
As Askeladd is dying instead of saying something cruel or witty to Thorfinn, hes gentle in his last moments and gives words of encouragement, and wisdom, for Thorfinn to find a purpose and live peacefully like his father intended, he also uses Thors name (something he pretended he'd forgot in earlier episodes to make Thorfinn lose his temper) which shows Askeladd just how much an impact Thors must of had on Askeladd, considering he never really forgot him, remembered what he was like/stood for, and that was a whole 10-11 years or so prior to this moment.
Then when he dies, and it shows Thorfinns face it's a face of utter grief stricken (as if he's just lost a loved one), and despair of losing his whole purpose/identity thus far.
The face he lunges at Canute, some people will say it's because he "took his kill/revenge"
Imo I think it's deeper than that, due to the montage of the shots,
Leif was there when Thors died
Leif is in town now when Askeladd dies.
The shots and panels of the white around a dying Thor's and a dying Askeladd are extremely close in nature, lunging at Canute I think had more to do with replacing him as the "new Askeladd" in Thorfinns mind at that point, he's just killed the man he grew up of 10 years.
Then the last thing which tops it off for me
The dagger.
As he's being dragged back away from the Room/Askeladds body, his very precious dagger (a weapon) his father gave him, he drops it and instead reaches out towards Askeladd with his hand,
I think this shows how he's lost his rage and revenge in that moment, and instead is grief stricken and realises he actually in fact does care for this dead man he so badly wanted to get revenge on all these years.
And the showcasing of the journey in the blade shows the end of that era.
Everything is very interpretational, but when he runs off the boat from Leif, a lot will say he's still going for revenge.
Again imo the way he acts in that moment, reminds me of a lost child, running to their guardian to seek some sort of guidance (mixed with Stockholm syndrome as again Askeladd and that way of life is all he's known for the past 10 years)
Under the guise of this revenge, because of a lack of any other purpose.
I absolutely love Vinland Saga, and the complexities of each character, they feel organic and real.
I can not wait to watch you delve into the second season Swanii, and see all your theories and theory crafting.
I'm particularly looking forward to your reaction to two episodes mainly in that season.
And the edit of the opening was absolutely beautiful and emotional. You did a good job.

Vinland Saga is waaay ahead of its time. This will only get better as we age too because of how well written the dialogs are and how fast anime pace of time is vs pace of life for us. Bits of Vinland dialogs can relate to us at different times of our life hitting us differently at a different time. Vinland Saga cemented itself in the legendary status for me. I hope season 3 comes around soon..

Askeladd also said "Stay back" to save Thorfinn. He knew that Thorfinn would try to save Askeladd until Thorfinn kill him in a formal duel.
But if Thorfinn dared to try that, he would also be a traitor against Denmark, making his public execution will inevitable.
To save Thorfinn, Askeladd couldn't let him join in.

@@officialswanii Unfortunately Askeladd couldn't see himself as a King. He thought of himself as a Viking and unworthy of the Artorius title. Ironically by sacrificing his life and taking up his true name he was able to "become Artorius" in his final moments.
So, about whether or not Askeladd is the legitimate king, is more so a question of who you represent and what you believe to be legitimate within the context and state of the country.
Since Askeladd inherited the blood of the Romans, who were pushed out of Britannia at the time, he does posses the blood of the former rulers of what is at this point in time, England.
But anyone can proclaim themselves king of any country, which is what Saxons did, and the Romans before them, and the Celts before them.
But yeah, logically, Askeladd has as good a claim as any, and he is the embodiment of the tale of Artorious beating back the savages and bringing back Britannia.
Glad to have found your channel on this season finale, seems you have a deep understanding of the characters. Please allow me to recommend a hidden gem of an anime that deserves way more fame.
Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation).
*Genre* The genre will be completely new to you but is actually a very developed and fleshed out in Chinese media. It's the low-Cultivation genre, comparable to high/low fantasy of the west. Cultivators are people who improve themselves spiritually through martial arts and meditation in order to achieve immortality (in low-cultivation, immortality is a legend, so the viewer doesn't know if it's possible), and they exorcize demons on the side. It is also drama/mystery/greek tragedy.
*Story* This is a story about benevolence/resentment, love/loss, fall/revenge. The story begins at the end (not a spoiler), our protagonist is a powerful cultivator who abandoned the spiritual path and invented the demonic path and is feared by all, but is killed by people he loved. Then the rest of season 1 goes through how a righteous young man, due to various twists of fate, became the big bad guy who betrays everyone he loves and loses everything. There are various funny moments of character interactions, heartwarming moments of few people who still believe in the protagonist, but mostly tragic moments of fate toying with people in every arc.
*Characters* All side characters are well written and memorable. Main characters are some of the most complex I've seen. I would put the character complexity for the main characters in S+ tier.
*Music* Some of my favorite music of all time. Very different than what you're used to, but the quality is comparable to Attack on Titan etc.
*Animation* Made by Tencent (China's Apple) so they have infinite money and it looks gorgeous.

This show is so fucking good at making you feel the rawness of human emotion. How the fuck did they make us feel emotional over somebody that the main character is supposed to want to kill. I mean they just wrote it so perfectly.

About the thing of Askeladd being the legitimate king, being one of the blood line (apparently) of THE Artorius... well, yes and no. I mean, per se even his being a real heir has little to no weight, referring to a state that was around a good 400 years earlier, and honestly even historically in that time frame a lot of people with even less big names to back them managed to strike it big, even becoming kings (in that regard Askeladd's plan of sort-of becoming a shadow eminence using the future king Canute isn't so crazy). BUT having said name and bloodline, and being able to prove it at least partially, would have been a big bonus in aggregating all the regional powers of Britain against foreigner conquerors they really don't like. Usually all those people spent their time warring against each-other, but with a LUCIUS ARTORIUS CASTUS with certified bloodline, they could have thought "better this guy from here than some bastard from beyond the sea" and band around him against the normans

I think Askeladd told Thorfinn to stay back because he would have not attacked Askeladd but rather the guards so they could get out of there and duel later. It would have ruined the plan and also implicated Thorfinn in the treason of attacking the king.

It wasn't a heart hit. As you said, that would have dropped him in at most a couple seconds as blood pressure rapidly dropping would have made him grey out. That was a lung hit -- every bit as lethal, especially back then, but allowing him up to minutes of consciousness as the lung filled with blood. The author undoubtedly researched this, since he's researched the hell out of everything else.
