The latency numbers for analog and HDZero should be even lower, if a fair comparison to DJI and Walksnail is to be made. The DJI/Walksnail numbers of around 25-35 ms are how long it takes the very first pixel to change on screen. To draw an entire frame is between 8-16ms longer than that. For HDZero and analog, the 14-16 ms number is the whole-frame latency. First-pixel latency for analog and HDZero is between1-3 ms. So a proper (fair) comparison would be to either add 8-16 ms to DJI and Walksnail or subtract about 16 ms from analog and HDZero.
The last sentence confused me: "So a proper (fair) comparison would be to either add 8-16 ms to DJI and HDZero". It should be DJI and Walksnail - correct ? Thanks for this comprehensive guide.

@@peter4presidente That’s not true, first off racing pilots have much lower reaction times. ok you convinced me O3 and V2 it is.... I still remember the v1 50mpb video where you said - I can see every blade of grass- that video made me buy the v1 you the best Dude- I got free tacos for you if you ever come to California
You kick ass Josh. As for your definitive answer, with regards to some good freestyle pilots flying DJI, the 35ms latency is within a margin, under 80 or so ms, that the returns on getting lower diminish due to how the brain process input and responds. A playable ping range and the qualitive improvement in performance on video games is one of many examples. I'd say anything under 60ms would allow for very similar flight performance to sub 25 for most people. I'd like to see this studied informally by you guys. Three is a diminishing return on human response time where the curve starts to increase more dramatically around the 80 to 100ms range. But that is not to say that one could not "notice" the difference while flying.
On latency, for those unfamiliar with what it means exactly: At 70km/h, a 50 millisecond latency means that at all times your drone is 3 feet further ahead on it's flightpath than you think it is, ie the image you see in your goggles is the image from where the drone was 3 feet ago so by the time you see a tree 3 feet ahead, the drone has already crashed into it. Do note that is not necessarily an issue. When flying with FPV goggles what you see is your reality so as long as the drone has enough room to fly, eg. you're making a slower speed panorama recording of a mountain peak or lake, it does not matter if the drone is slightly ahead of you because there is nothing to crash into or requires split-second adjustments.
Congrats for this video Joshua! This is a next level video in terms of quality and information. You are doing a great job producing this kind of media! Thank you from Argentina!
Thanks for this video. I'm getting interested in FPV because I picked up a sim and have been having fun and want to make the sim a reality, but I don't want to buy the full "ready to fly kits", I want a kit to grow into. The goggles are probably the most confusing portion... it's like choosing Cannon vs Sony, vs Nikon, vs Fuji, etc... So this helped a ton getting all the info I needed :)
I am brand new to this I've wanted a drone for years but have been tbh intimidated by the mountain of stuff out there so I am so grateful to find this channel now that I finally know I want to do the fpv style which already took me hours to figure out lol so you rock Joshua!
White sparkles in HDZ are there because the signal is produced on the screen as it has arrived. Any additional processing would increase latency. Perhaps they could have an option to enable additional algorithm with sacrifice of the latency.
OMG this is what you see through the goggles! I watched your videos and built a quad about 4 years ago with the analog system, can't believe they improve so much, think I have to get back into the hobby now.
I am fresh chicken - have no idea what's what and all that things. Saw it few others video, and I can easily say- thank You for so nice packed and presented all information together with samples.
I find the breakup from walksnail far easier to fly through than DJI because it doesn't stutter. After flying it for a bit I find it very predictable now provided you don't push it until it completely drops.
One reason why I prefer the V2 goggles over the goggles 2 is that the V2 goggles have a fan to prevent fogging. To me that a very valuable asset the V2 goggles have.
Based on the video quality comparisons... If I valued low latency I'd go analog. That digital sparkle of hdzero looks really bad, and eh penetration when its possible to get higher powered analog makes analog better than hdzero. Imo, anyway. So the question for digital where image quality is preferred over low latency, its dji vs walksnail. ... And thats tough. I wouldnt be able to fly with blurry smudges when mbps goes low for the same reason I disable motion blur in video games; makes it look like soup, which actually gives me a form of motion sickness. So dji for the win? But man... The price and less compatibility makes that a hard sell...
Yeah, don't know why he wouldn't try that, or even mention it. I get the feeling he has something against Walksnail and his 'reviews' aren't really honest.
@@wattage2007 i don’t think so. I believe he just doesn’t use walksnail because he personally prefers dji and already has a lot of Kwads with dji. Also, dji wasn’t used with focus mode either so it’s pretty fair there. The fact that he doesn’t use walksnail makes him a little less aware of the newest features of walksnail. Can’t blame him, he’s probably one of the most objective person in the hobby.
@@baptiste_nonat But that’s the problem, he’s so heavily invested in DJI, he’s not interested in Walksnail and I doubt Caddx gave him any Walksnail stuff to review so he’s probably automatically not a fan because of that. I also hate the way he looks upon fixed wing long-range people as some kind of fringe minority. To the long range community, if you’re after HD video, there can only be Walksnail really. HDZero quality is terrible at range and DJI has set limits.
@@wattage2007 still, he doesn’t long range himself so I can understand him. I don’t do longrange myself and if it’s something I don’t do, I probably won’t think that it important to me. I fly in France and fixed wings is extremely limited because of the laws. And people mostly want penetration testing instead of range. BUT I see your point and it is valid.
@@baptiste_nonat Cheers dude. Nice to have a respectful answer! I’m in the UK by the way and laws are extremely strict here too. They’re also extremely stupid and don’t take common sense into account! Anyway, happy flying 😀
This pretty much only makes it harder if you are just getting into it. Because as a starter I would prefer going for a cheap option (so analog I guess) as I might crash stuff or might not even like it. So then when looking for a goggle you like a versatile one. So then this one seems like the perfect one. But then looking at the cost you could wonder why not just going into the DJI ecosystem (A Integra cost about the same). Might be a little more latency, but as you say yourself, that does not seem a huge issue as many people use it. Another option is just first going for the cheapest option there is, but you still spend money on that to then later replace it anyway. If you decide to continue with FPV that is.
I'm about $400 into the hobby with a Mobula 6 tinywhoop, a Taranis Q X7 controller, and EV800D goggles (each about $100 when I got them), plus extra batteries, ELRS upgrades on both the TX/RX side, BT2.0 battery connectors for longer flight time, and replacement props and a couple frames. As starter gear, it has been great to have something I have crashed probably 50+ times trying to learn how to fly (and how not to fly). Just buying a controller and a simulator for your PC doesn't feel good enough, but more expensive hardware on your drone will hurt more if it breaks while you're learning. I'd suggest starting with the cheap stuff first so you have real world experience with the hardware, but aren't out a lot of money if you break something, or find that the hobby just doesn't really capture your interest like you thought. I've been flying that gear for a year and change, and I'm considering upgrading to Flywoo's long range quad with an O3 air unit and the Goggles Integra. I absolutely wouldn't be comfortable staring down the barrel of a $1,000 purchase like that without the experience I gained flying the cheap stuff.
DJI Avata 2 brought the controller 3 and I'm just praying and waiting for them to make the O3 Unit compatible or their O4 Unit to be sold then I can start doing my own builds I have a RM Boxer that I use for just flight Sims but IDK maybe for about $400 I can get everything i need for my first build I wanna spend 250-300 on the build and the rest for battery's and ext get a cheap pair of Analog this way I can get going quickkkk I'm not jerking my chain but im pretty good in Manual with FPV but I need to be able to do some cheap builds so I can push myself to be a better poit and waiting for DJI to send back a crashed Avata 2 dont want to keep doing that.
You know you can also take the Telemetry file from the Goggle video if you have SD card in both the AIr unit and the goggles, and you can easily overlay the goggle telemetry on DJI from the 1080p Recording from the AirUnit.
Thankyou so much for this vid iam a fixed wing flyer and looking to do fpv for the purpose of formation flying so iam thinging the analog system any sugestions whoud be greatly appericated Thanks again REGARDS BILL
I still love flying my analog fpv drones, i have dji o3 air unit in another drone and it really is amazing. But something about the way Analog feels when flying it, its like you said, its just not the same even with the lower resolution its still enjoyable to have that instant analog fpv feed. Id love to pick up a set of HDZero goggles soon and try out the 90fps camera. That would probably be my favorite setup when im not looking for the Range of something like DJI or a powerful Analog VTX setup..
I currently fly with the DJI V1 goggles, and I've been wanting to upgrade to something a bit more compact with OLED screens. I don't really have a problem with the video, I'd just like a nicer pair of googles. I only fly freestyle (and usually alone), and I record all of my video on the DJI air unit (my flying isn't good enough to warrant the price of a GoPro). I have also been thinking it would be nice to fly something smaller than 5" from time to time. I waited for all of these new systems to come out so I could compare them, and now that the dust has settled I'm still undecided. I seem to fall right between the cracks of these systems. The closest one would be the HDZero goggles with a Walksnail VRX, but I'd almost never use the HDZero VRX. The DJI goggles are the size and features I want, but the price of the O3 AUs is too high, and not having defogging is pretty annoying. I think I'll keep flying my DJI V1s, and wait for a sale on one of the systems (I bought my DJI V1s at a really good price). I'd also like to leave some time to see if the Walksnail latency on HDZero goggles improves.
35:49 - Yep, that's me lol! But HD-Zero and Analog (because I still have so much of it in my garage) all the way for me. Excellent video thank you SO much. Incredible comparison.
Amazing summary. Now i know that i want hdzero as a abalog upgrade from rtf kit. But now i need the money to afford 😅. This fpv thing that is exciting me so much is making me broke. 😮
I’m with you 100% on that one Joshua !!!!! I have the V2 goggles and after they came out with the new goggles I wasn’t sure which goggles I had anymore was it V2 the goggles 2 ?????🤔
I bought a Skyzone 03O goggles with Sharkbyte module for 200 euro last month and I'm so impressed with how good my analogue looks on the goggles that I havent used the sharkbyte/HDzeo system yet :D
Love your thorough reviews/tutorials and truthful observations, Joshua! Your IQ is off the charts. I hope you are planning a review/tutorial on how to set-up a third party drone with DJI 03 air unit installed, and using DJI goggles 3 and DJI rc 3. Because that tutorial doesn't seem to exist yet. I have a new Flylens flycal85, and on Betaflight I can't connect my goggles or RC at all. The default settings include no assigned switch for 'arm motors' so I have literally not gotten off the ground yet. Thanks for all you do!
I've gone for the walksnail system just because of the Caddx VRX 1s package to retrofit my BetaFPV Meteor 85 quad. The picture quality in my Headplay box google was amazing, but they are massive. Luckily I found a set of nearly new Fatshark Dominator HD goggles for about 75% the cost of a new set. I'll sell the VRX on, but keep the VTX and camera.
Thanks for the video! Started out two years ago, got a analogue Eachine EV800DM goggle for about 70 bucks with discount. Bought a Caddx Ratel 2 last month, and with the new cam, Analogue is again sufficient for me. Will get a O3 System later but it's incredible what you can achieve with analogue video with a low low pricetag
Really consistent.... I do find it really honest as well... Don't know or understand why WTFOSD wasn't mentioned!! since there are so much community support... but I can respect your perspective!!
In my opinion, WTFOS is a community response to DJI's lack of response. That doesn't make DJI responsive. It's a band-aid. It's a great band-aid, but still a band-aid.
Joshua answering the hard questions! Nice video and good job showcasing the relative strengths of the systems. I fly DJI but felt like all the systems were well represented. Great job.
I'm 63 and new to all this FPV stuff and am merely trying to create a flight simulator in the guise of a RC plane/glider w/ a tilt/pan FPV system that will give me the feel of flying, 'cause I lost my ability to fly my beloved airplanes, due to injury (wheelchair user now), as well as a fixed income and rising costs for everything necessary to maintain your flight status, like insurance and av-fuel and rental costs to maintain your flight hours - it just costs too much. So, I'm trying to glean the necessary knowledge to put together a system I can both afford and will give me the best video quality possible. I bought a RC glider (big purchase for me at over $300) and a few pieces I think I need - mini camera, autopliot module (Kopilot) for the return feature, GPS module, tilt/pan set-up, etc. I don't plan on doing cross-country RC flying, as I'm just wanting to cruise around my area and do some aerobatics for some virtual fun. Still debating which FPV goggles and antenae to save up for, but I think its going to be a Fatshark Dominator for price point and versatility. Not even sure if the stuff I've purchased is analog or digital. How do you tell? Its all a bit overwhelming w/ so much minutiae in parts compatability and so forth. Almost more questions than answers, now. smh
So what I get from this is that DJI is the best. Which brings to mind the question I’ve been having since DJI NEO came out. I’ve seen videos about DJI going long 3 km long and then are there videos or at least one where they use the DJI Neo in fob mode and free styling like crazy. My question is is the long distance achievable with the FPV radio controller as well as if it is achievable the freestyle with the RC-N3 included in the Neo combo?? Because I’m thinking buying the DJI neo fly more combo and wait for the leaked Dji budget goggles. Or if it is not possible to combine those… then buy the DJI neo alone, and wait for the budget goggles and combine them with the freestyle FPV radio controller, only if it’s possible to achieve the long distance flight with those two. Did I get it right? Hope I made myself clear. Lol
Thanks for that overview. But... I know you are into copters only, but videos like that could make also sense to consider the needs (or no-needs) of wing pilots. The whole latencything might be quite different when flying with wings and also depending on style. Wingpilots sometimes fly close proximity, but mostly not.

I'm looking at the PILES of 2019 vintage stuff I purchased and never used. Drooling over this new stuff!
This is such a great video - every system explained in detail to a point where I had no questions left. Thank you!
For real, JB. DJI called the 3rd goggle iteration Google 2 and the second air unit the 03... I wish they would have just gone 03 for the whole system.
I am brand new to this I've wanted a drone for years but have been tbh intimidated by the mountain of stuff out there so I am so grateful to find this channel now that I finally know I want to do the fpv style which already took me hours to figure out lol so you rock Joshua!
Super informative. Excellent thorough explanations. Very, very useful and helpful to the new people getting into fpv. Thanks for the videos.
Analog and HD Zero on HD Zero goggles and DJI For me. And if I get the itch for Walksnail I can get the the Walksnail vrx. Great time to fly fpv. 😎
White sparkles in HDZ are there because the signal is produced on the screen as it has arrived.
Any additional processing would increase latency. Perhaps they could have an option to enable additional algorithm with sacrifice of the latency.
Walksnail also has 1080p resolution too Josh.
It looks much better with the current beta fw.
agreed. I think the image quality looks way better than the dji fpv goggles v2 here for sure
Also agree feel like he needs to update firmware it’s great stuff
Unfortunately freestyle on 60fps is pretty hard for me. I don't feel connected to drone at all. On 100fps it's alright.
OMG this is what you see through the goggles! I watched your videos and built a quad about 4 years ago with the analog system, can't believe they improve so much, think I have to get back into the hobby now.
Dji goggles exist since 6 years now so technically not a lot has changed
If HDZero would have a bit more penetration and picture quality, it would be a no brainer. As of rn, its pretty hard to decide !
No fan in goggles 2? Pretty sad.
Goggles 2 have a fan too
@@MadmarxOfficial From my understanding the goggles 2 have a fan for electrical components not for anti fogging.
@@cheechfpv Oh maybe, never had any fog issue with mine tho
Very hopeful ! I also have Channel and use before DJi drons but now I Start training fpv
Thanks for including long range!
I do not even need goggles or even interested in swapping what i have. But will i watch it with a few cups of tea.. Damn right i will!
Love to see video like this but for controllers and its compatibility with different systems. Great work :)
ELRS wins.
I'm saving up for Dji O3 and goggles. Probably take me a year or two.
For the break up part, walksnail focus mode works great now and avoids the horrible distortion that was seen there. Definitely worth trying.
Amazing job Joshua! Thanks for always the best and super detailed info!
Awesome explanation Bardwell, you literally covered everything, wow you really know your stuff … we are not worthy 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️
Another V1 user from Australia 2 😮
It would be amazing if they where able to use like an ai up scaling or filtering to average the blocky white colors to the neighboring pixels.
Thanks jb. I was missing you and BLUNTY. You posted this just in time.
i didnt know your yard was in the liftoff sim thats freaking sick!
I’m with you 100% on that one Joshua !!!!!
I have the V2 goggles and after they came out with the new goggles I wasn’t sure which goggles I had anymore was it V2 the goggles 2 ?????🤔
Amazing video! Answers so so many questions!!!!! Hope to see an updated version soon, I guess when the 04 Air Unit comes out.
I signed up this week. You certainly deserve it, Joshua. Fantastic channel! I've been a subscriber for a few years now.
I bought a Skyzone 03O goggles with Sharkbyte module for 200 euro last month and I'm so impressed with how good my analogue looks on the goggles that I havent used the sharkbyte/HDzeo system yet :D
AWESOME JB!!!! Consumer Reports for FPV!!!
Thanks for all you do!
that DJI 03 had the best tune.
Your analogy of walk snail to dji was classic! Excellent Video!
The ratel 2 is a great camera. And they are great goggles for the price... analog is great as long as you invest in good cameras
Why is everyone in the FPV community the nicest person ever? Is it like a rule? Thanks for the video!
ive been searching this for a few days and always bumed out their wasn't a bardwell version happy day today.
I just bought the HDZero goggles. I'm super excited! Still trying to make a decision on a quad tho.
Get a walksnail VRX to pair with it. The hdzero alone leaves a lot to be desired. Really good choice you made due to their versatility though imo
I've learned something today. Cheers.
Joshua answering the hard questions! Nice video and good job showcasing the relative strengths of the systems. I fly DJI but felt like all the systems were well represented. Great job.
Great video, Thanks! Answered all my buying questions.
Almost more questions than answers, now. smh
DJI Goggles and O3 Air Unit will give you the best quality image possible
Wow another great informative clip thx 🇿🇦
This is EXACTLY what i needed to learn today.
Just by the videos I preferred the V2 with O3.
Lol
BANG ON! As always
Thanks for that overview. But... I know you are into copters only, but videos like that could make also sense to consider the needs (or no-needs) of wing pilots. The whole latencything might be quite different when flying with wings and also depending on style. Wingpilots sometimes fly close proximity, but mostly not.
Minimalist, 1 goggles for all big and micros, DJI V2 still relevant for me.
I have the HDZERO goggles, and I definitely have FOMO with the other digital systems. I really wish I could try them all.
Dji V2 & 02 for me! !!!!!!!!
I night fly alot so ...yeah Vista air unit
Cheers from Knoxville , Tennesse!!!!!!!
Bro this is AWESOME WORK thank you !
thanks for all the informational vids, your the man
16:49 Can sign that, looks really like a 500µg hofmann experience 😂👍
To the bois and girls flying walksnail goggles, what has been your best combination of antennas? I understand we have three for recieve and one to transmitt, i havent had anyluck with the stock antennas of course;). Tried a plethera of omni’s , landed on all lumineer mini patches. Still only get about 200 yards out at 100’ plus elevation clear line of sight get significant break up…? Setting at 700mw
Thanks! That vid helped a lot!
Very good video! You said go analog for low budget, but still have good range/penetration. What analog goggles would you suggest for good range/pen, but still be on a tight budget?( I know skyzones are probably great, but they are $500-600)
Thanks!
Thanks so much for this 💚 Would love to see video quality comparisons between DJI and Walknsail VTx
See the links in the video description. There is just such a comparison.
