"The Seal Lullaby" is in complete sincerity one of my favourite musical compositions. The emotional experience of the concept of the lullaby, an assurance by a benevolent caretaker that you will be safe, in body and in soul, that you can trust the world in your most vulnerable state - is something not only children, and not only I, resonate with on the deepest levels of the mind. As Whitacre himself guides us through his profoundly moving melody, I don't even need to listen to the words to hear this idea of loving care, this hopeful spirit made into music, as well as the wonder and awe of the world I so easily lose sight of. And never have I heard a performance bring out Whitacre's beauty so completely, than the one we have the privilege of experiencing here, free of charge. I bow to Christopher Glynn and to VOCES8 - a vocal group bringing together singers with such immense and utter mastery of their craft that I find they consistently, frighteningly, come near the borders of perfection.
That's a cool name, shematite. I am still weeping. Green to black. Hands on keyboard. Hands in air. Voices from... the Hand of God. This song always dissolves me. Imagine singing this. I'd have to run it a hundred times or would be too verklempt, but no guarantees even then. It is HARD to sing such beauty and not fall down. Praise Whitacre, Glynn, VOCES8. And seals. And oceans. And sleep. And God.
Me too. I will have the pleasure of conducting the concert band arrangement of this for our Christmas concert and I hope I will be able to keep my emotions in check during the performance :).
This is just so wonderful to listen to! The gorgeous harmonies and dissonants plus the warm and perfectly blending voices of you guys. Also props to the piano player for playing so delicately and beautifully! And when watching the video we can all see how much you all enjoy making music together, it really warms my heart
I lost my mom just under two years ago and discovering this song has brought me so much comfort. I can hear this in her voice so easily. Beautiful performance.
I cannot express how much I love listening to this choir!!!! My choir teacher got to see you guys live in concert!!! I hope I get to see you guys live one day too!
I remember performing this with my choir back in middle school. Im glad the video is still up, this was such a powerful piece of music, one of my favorites to sing.
So unfortunate that the film that this movie was composed for, was shelved and never was finalized for release. This piece is so powerful and beautifully written...in my opinion, I think this would have been a very powerful compliment in a motion picture.
@Nathan B wasnt just a poem, the white seal is a whole story from the jungle book. Its basically the story of david and Goliath, but with seals. Each of the 7 jungle book stories starts with a poem and eric whitacre wrote this melody around the words of the poem. Theres already an animated film of the white seal from 1975, but i imagine they were going to make it live "live action" in the same style as stuart little was live action". He arranged the choir version a few years after he initially drafted the melody and transcribed it for concert band severals years after that in 2011. He also sang it to his baby every night after he heard the studio made kung fu panda.
As much as I love Eric Whiticare’s music, I must say the privilege must be his in directing the best vocal group of our generation! ❤ Sublime and uplifting, thank you so much, Voces8.
I'm a huge fan of Whitacre's music and he's a good conductor, but while it's a nice gesture to include him in the videos, you can't tell me that VOCES8 couldn't do a gorgeous job on these pieces without a conductor.
He has said so many times himself. The fact that he on many occasions has said when he writes a song he hears Voces8 for all the parts and knows it to be pure.
VOCES8!!!!! I absolutely love your musicianship, tonalities, blend, expressive choral flow and above all, your individually gifted voices that sublimely come together as one!
It’s indescribably glorious…a sublime treatment of hope, faith and love….on a supernatural plane. I can’t help but think of my Creator who lovingly gave me life, an immortal soul…and most importantly…revealed Himself to me so I could love and adore Him. Thank you ❤
The first time ever heard this was in high school when the out varsity women’s choir did an arrangement of it, I didn’t get to hear it all because we had to go get ready for our songs but I’ve been in love with it since
I just discovered this song today when WGUC played it on New At Noon. Wiping tears from the beauty and delighted to find it here...and know that it's also on a newly released album.
Just finished listening to Voces8's new CD, After Silence and seeing them last night at St. John's Cathedral in Denver. Their music is so sublime, so moving ... words cannot describe how beautiful this music is. Aldous Huxley was right ... Thank you, Voces8! I hope to see you again.
What a beautiful structure the composer has sculpted. The vocal group performs it flawlessly too as the singers sound both as one and individual at the same time. Our local municipal orchestra will be performing another of Eric’s compositions Deep Field” and while I was practicing along with that video, this performance popped up in my YT feed. It was a nice introduction to a composer that I was not familiar with before.
Oh, hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us And black are the waters that sparkled so green The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find us At rest in the hollows that rustle between Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow Oh weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas Rudyard Kipling
We sang this in my highschool choir about 7 years ago and performing it is still one of my strongest memories. One of my favorite parts is "where billow meets billow" the images that come to mind are just amazing
I played a band arrangement of this for All-County on bass clarinet my 8th grade year of middle school before the whole COVID conundrum. It has to be one of my favorite band arrangements in my musical career.
VOCES8 + Eric Whitacre = bliss

Not to be a downer but have you heard Whitacres "When David Heard?" - I was an emotional wreck after hearing that.
yes!
Well said.
Would love to hear V8 sing this piece a capella.
This piece, in all its crystal simplicity reminds me that I am so a part of this beautiful planet and of the ethers…
Eric Whitacre is a genius.
I physically cannot listen to this song without crying. Every. Single. Time.
...because it is healing you need..
Es geht mir genauso.. es rührt mich zu Tränen ❤

I love when Voces8 does a Eric Whitacre piece..the resonance, the blend of voices..it’s so beautiful❤
*blend*. The voices are certainly not bland.
@@NoHomerS sorry, I accidentally mistyped.. :(
@@girlyaccount7771 it happens 🙂 It's a funny mistake though lol.
I think you meant resonance, not dissonance.
Really. The breath just stops. Thank you.

The audio production is divine
This very small mixed choir do justice to this rather lovely lullaby , their harmonies as so acute x
Beyond words
Love the conductors tenderness
The love is palpable

I wonder what film was it?
@Mikail Sandhy The movie was going to be based around Rudyard Kiplings poem titled "The White Seal" The project was scrapped for Kung Fu Panda.

Ye, i like it too
Hollywood dumped artistic beauty for assembly line trash. Too bad. This is a beautiful piece.
The emotion felt is pure love
Dem Internet sei Dank, dass ich diese Gruppe , diese Engelsstimmen gefunden habe..
Ich liebe Voces8
it is a wonder; pure beauty on the highest level; compostion and performing, harmony, feeling; thank you

A master class in excellent choral singing and ensembleship. Truly superb.

Thank You, Eric Whitacre And Voces8. For This Beautiful Gift Of Music ❤
Love this warm, gorgeous piece and how the pianist feels and anticipates the music and translates it through the keyboard.
I guess this is meaningful for those keeping their children safe. Thank you Kipling and Eric Whitacre.
Such a beautiful message in song. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
This masterpiece cracks me up every time … I’m crying like a baby now… thank you Mr Whitacre and performers, you inspire me.

We sang this in my Schola during my sophomore year of college. It brings back great memories. Love these guys!
This is such an incredibly beautiful piece of music and performance of it. Literally can't watch without getting chills over and over.

Sang this song in high school choir freshman year. Sooooo good.
Beautiful song. I heard it properly for the first time last night at choir as we are singing this at our upcoming concert in June.
My heart my brain, what's this , more than a masterpiece

Ooh, the beauty, happiness of hearing this all... Thanks.
In the beginning... Something Enya-ish... I forgive, she can be copied, forever... !
Beautiful, as usual, but with gorgeous tones from the Blüthner piano!
Absolutely. It's so soulful. What is it about that instrument that sets it apart?
@@janebaldwin8040 It usually is all in the voicing by a skilled tuner. Read "Grand Obsession" by Perri Knize.
This has been in my favorite Spotify playlist for a long time. But this adds another dimension, viewing them with Eric leading.
Beautiful - tranquil - serene - thank you!
Magical
Wunderbar. Traumhaft. 🙏👌
I really love this piece performed by Voces8. Just beautiful.
