  • Welcome the TexasHillbilly channel. In this video we rescue an all but forgotten Mopar that was designed in Europe and built in Brazil. This Omni was graciously donated to us so we could give it another chance at life on the road. It is nearly identical to the one that the wife drove 25 years ago. Its owner drove it until he was 100 years old. We intend to love it and appreciate it the way he did. Follow along as we rehabilitate this Omni after a half dozen years of neglect.
    We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a like. If you want to see more, subscribe for future content. If you have any comments or questions, please don't hesitate to post. I typically respond to comments.

    Hi
    TexasHillbilly! I bought a 1984 Dodge Omni! It's metallic brown with the 2.2 liter engine and 3 speed automatic. It wasn't running because the fuel pump had gone bad from the car sitting since 2018!! I replaced the mechanical fuel pump by first getting the alternator loose and pushed it up and out of the way. Next on the list is a new radiator and water pump. The radiator is original from 1984!!!! This one has no rust!! The body has a few small whiskey dents!

    The 2.2 and 2.5 SOHC. man seeing that brings back memories! I got down to 30 minutes to replace the timing belt. I don't think the Omni/Horizon ever got the 2.5, but I know the Omni had a turbo option. I believe it was the GL trim.

    A quick bit of advice...get a distributor pick up plate...but only a Mopar factory piece. Any aftermarket piece is junk. Also, replace the spark plug wires. The distributor ends of the wires are the contacts for the rotor.

  • @mtrgv

    Great job getting the Omni running. My guess is there was a lot of air trapped in the fuel lines and the gas tank. I guess? that's why it took so long to start? I might be wrong and like you said the voltage was too low for the power train control module/ECM. Either way she runs now!! You made the right decision replacing the fuel tank. Very entertaining video, your wife was really happy to drive the Omni. With my Horizon, it seemed like the passenger side CV axle wore out before the left side.

    • @TexasHillbilly
      @TexasHillbilly  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I suppose some air was trapped in the injector and took a bit to get cleared out. It did have spark and the injector was getting a signal even with low voltage, so who knows. The wife can hardly wait to make a grocery run in it.

    Make sure the cooling fan comes on. The thermistor/sensor will turn the fan on and off at a certain temperature. If the fan does not come on the ignition switch is faulty. That's how I fixed my 1985 Horizon when the fan would not come on.

    We had the nineteen eighty three plymouth horizon.
    All of the omnies and horizons had one bad feature to them and that was the seal on the distributor.
    We lived in Michigan, so you might not deal with it.There in Texas, but they will have a Tennessee to not want to start after it.Rains or during the rain because moisture gets underneath the distributor cap.
    The best antidote to that is to use a silicone spray.Even if you replace the old ring for the distributor it doesn't solve the issue.
    If choosing not to address the issue, all you have to do is each time it won't start pop your distributor off.Dry it out with a rag and you'll be ready to go.
    Door seals will have to be replaced on these as well.
    When the car sits a while the seals will split over time.

    • @TexasHillbilly
      @TexasHillbilly  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It badly needs door seals.

    I had one identical to that one. It ran great, but I call it getting stolen, but the lot called it a repo. The deal was that he took my Honda 450 as half off the car and my payment would start on my first paycheck but they came 1 week early and woke me up that morning asking me for the key. They already had it loaded . The car lot owner wrecked my cycle in his parking lot, and it started leaking oil. That's the only reason he agreed ,he already had it planned to do that.

    No surprise on the low voltage issue. Seen it before, the starter has to spin at a specific rpm to cause fire, those gear reduction starters in Dodges are finicky.
    Now, do the twin turbo GLHS treatment on it.
    I'd venture to guess it's the CV on the inner connection that has issue.

    • @TexasHillbilly

    I was going to say the injector in the throttle body was stuck. Fuel injectors will hang up when a vehicle sits for a while. Sometimes you can tap on them while they're pulsing and it'll free them up. That's likely what was happening here, because you know you had fire and fuel, the injector was probably just gummed up.

    • @TexasHillbilly
      @TexasHillbilly  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Crazy how much of that fuel system was faulty. We had her running like a top. Then a few cruises around the neighborhood and it’s acting like it has a fuel delivery issue again. Stumbling unless I feather the throttle. What does Sensei suggest?

    • @topher8634
      @topher8634 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TexasHillbilly check the injector spray pattern. It should be just that, a wide even spray on the butterfly. Look for drips in the middle of the spray as well, there should be none. There's a regulator in the base of the TB, but I've never seen one fail on TBI. Fuel pressure will be low (10-15 psi). They don't run the high pressure like multi-port does.

  • @topher8634
    @topher8634 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It sounded like a hub bearing. With it jacked up grab the wheel on the top and bottom and see if you have play in it. The 3 speed transaxles in those were pretty good. It was either an A404 or A413. Check the fluid while idling after it has warmed up and you've shifted through all the gears. Can't remember if it's while in park or neutral. I know some Chrysler's it was in neutral. It should tell you on the dipstick or in manual.

    • @TexasHillbilly
      @TexasHillbilly  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nailed it again. Wheel bearing was toast. We’ll post a video on the Omni soon showing that process. I ordered a cv shaft anyways, but it didn’t fit. Good thing I didn’t need it. Reminds me I need to drop it off at ups.

    On the seats - my vote no covers. The staining has most likely migrated into the foam padding so you will most likely need to soak and clean multiple times. I've used this guys formula with great success: th-cam.com/video/eOSEbtdmMSA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fsBPw3X84TWTYQP9
    As for the paint, I typically stay with the original color. Why not try the Rustoleum turbo cans (in white)? There are a bunch of videos on here showing whole car repaint jobs. Wes
