- Today, we drive this old, broken, and abandoned 1990 Dodge Omni.
We work on ANYTHING with an ENGINE using mostly BUDGET TOOLS.
What are we working on?
A Dodge Omni left in the field for 15 years.
What are we using to complete the work?
Fuel pump, hand tools, bearing grease, etc.
Do we have any concerns about today's work?
Yes, it's in bad shape.
Why did we decide to do this?
We're having fun and hope you enjoy the video.
What's your favorite thing about this work?
We hope this video helps encourage you to start or continue working on whatever project you've got sitting around. We hope you have a great day. We appreciate our subscribers and viewers. A BIG THANKS to each of you. Remember, this is something YOU CAN DO so REACH OUT with QUESTIONS and don't be afraid of Starting-Continuing-Finishing the work your project needs.

We complete work in a small 2 stall garage with limited space. You can do anything you would like to do, no matter the space you have, just plan accordingly and adjust your plans to the size of your workspace. We Believe In YOU!
What's coming to the shop in the future?
More 3 wheelers?
Are you able to do lots of work in a limited space?
Yes, without question. The biggest issues we face in our 2stallgarage are organization. Keeping the workspace organized and both stalls clear of clutter really helps with motivation, which then helps with productivity. Basically, if I see a clean workspace, I'm much more ready to dive into a project or even just scheduled maintenance.

1990 was the final year for the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon.
And it had a few changes that were only for that year: driver airbag, the rectangular side mirrors (from the M-body?), HVAC was in the center, it had always been on the left.
Never understood the hate for these cars - it was well packaged and the right car for the time. Nice video!
Agreed. We're putting it back on the road this summer.
The Dodge Omni saved my life when I was 9 years old. A drunk tractor trailer driver cut off my Dad in Florida, and I wasn't wearing a seatbelt (hardly anyone ever did). The Omni actually bounced backward off the tires and landed in a dirt parking lot. I hit the windshield which held tough, and after everything was said and done, the engine ended up pushed toward the firewall turned slightly sideways and it still started up and drove home 12 miles up the road. That little car was probably one of the best American cars ever made, and everybody at the time just looked at them like they were a joke. People rarely ever talk about them or even really remember them but I wish we had more cars like that. Tough little workhorses that take a huge amount of abuse and just keep going.
These cars where better than people think and actually was one of the safest in it's size class.
It’s almost time to start working on it again.
They were great cars! Had one that lasted forever! Only thing was it never ran right with overdrive so that was simply unplugged and it ran great as just a three speed.
Interesting! Ever find out what the issue was?
@@2StallGarage Not sure. It was my grandparents car first and the Plymouth dealer did it not long after they got it. I think it was constantly up and down shifting from OD.
I am a bit confused about your post. Not sure what year yours was or even mine, I think an 84' Anyway from 81' - 90' (last year of production) the all had the 2.2 with the Chrysler buil A413 Automatic. It was a three speed with NO overdrive or Lock up torque converter. Despite the noisy, thrashy. clunky (defective wrist pins) 2.2, it had decent pep for the times and eventually a revised 2.5 version came out with roller cam and counter rotating balance shafts wich was much smoother but you would think they would of fixed the wrist pins when they "redesigned" the engine. Earlier 2.2's would eat camshafts and blow head gaskets like theyre was no tomorrow!@@NathanMoist
Plymouth and Dodge were the every mans family car brands. Thanks for showing some love to the every day cars of the past!
Thanks for checking it out. 🏁
Yes, one of the beautifully engineered bits for L-Body automobiles was the "reach down, grab hold and twist hard" access for the oil filter; no jacking, crawling or tools needed.
I never found the cooling fan to be inadequate, even during high altitude ascents.
For the door handles, you'll need to pop the interior panels, and check alignment of all the linkage rods connected to the door pulls and lock knobs; slight drifting of the rod ends within those plastic fastener-pivots would screw up the geometry, and most people would simply pull harder until they sheared the pot-metal door handles, which should still be an easy find as a Dorman part.
This is true for pretty much any automobile from that era; repairing cooling system leaks and connections is a snap, unlike today's bidirectional t-stats and integrated components.
Very cool. Thanks for the info on this!
I owned two of these...a 1979 Horizon and 1990 Omni. The Horizon was well on its way to 200,000 miles when I was hit by a car while the police were clearing a crash and I was in a row of stopped cars. The car that hit me was totaled and I drove my Horizon for another year after the insurance wrote it off then traded it in as a down payment on another car. The 1990 Dodge I still have. Interesting "update" with airbag, new dash, and rear should belts for just the one year.. It's driven almost 450.000 miles. I bought it new when I went back to college. I loved these cars and never understood the hate.
Great story, sorry you got hit. We plan on putting this back on the road and selling it.
I owned 6 of those within a period of about 32 years. Very reliable and UNDERATED. The last 3 were 1990, 2 Omnis and one Horizon. Good for over 230k miles. I had to replace door handles for years. They were made so weak the metal felt like pewter. Loved those comfortable seats. Easy cars to work on; everything within reach.
Yes, love it.
We had an 88 Omni i drove it too work for 2 years until the bumper rusted off and the windows fell into the door. Then bought a Dodge Spirit for $100 swapped the Onmi engine into it and kept driving
Nice Todd. You're taking me back a few years talking about Omni's and Spirits. Time sure moves quickly.
Yes the Dodge Omni !
I like the Omni. I remember it as a pretty cool little car that was reasonably comfortable and got decent gas mileage. Yours sounds pretty good and would probably down even more after 500 miles or so and another oil in there somewhere. That 5W30 synthetic has good flow properties and should help a bunch :)
Good morning, Wes. I'm going all in on bringing this Omni back to glory. Have a great day. -Justin
@@2StallGarage, if anyone could bring it back, it would be you. I can't wait to see you go through it :)
It was fun watching you bring this Omni back to life. If it could talk, I'm sure it would thank you! Look forward to your progress, take care! P.S. You have a new subscriber. :)
Eric, that means a lot. Thank you. Glad you’re here for future adventures.🙂🙌
Was working at carline when those were new...I kinda liked the performance version.
I had an ‘82 with the base VW engine and five speed manual. It was a good cheap dependable car when I needed one. It was great in the snow.
I had an ‘81 024 and a friend of mine had an ‘83 or ‘85 orange Omni. Despite all the problems those cars were darn fun.
Also I was unaware these had TBI. I thought they all had that horrible Chrysler designed Holly.
I think they’re fun too. Good clean fun with a throwaway type car. Thanks for sharing. 🏁
That thing came out of a field with that much metal left? Impressive. I'm jealous. Mine has decided, on it's own, that it wants it's roof removed. Guess we'll oblige eventually.
I'd love to have my roof back. hahaha
Bring back the Omni fo sho!
Awesome video.
Glad you’ve got one. Just lucked out finding this one for $50. Pretty rough but a cool car.
I'd have more if I had a field to park them in! hahaha Can't go wrong for $50 no matter what it is, especially one of the most reliable iterations of the Omni! @@2StallGarage
My mom had an early 80s Plymouth horizon and watching this brought back some memories of that little car. It lasted forever, which is surprising for a mopar lol
Ha! Yes, they're fun little cars. Glad to hear it brought some memories back. Hopefully good ones. :)
Yep it did! You don't see any around anymore sadly :(
I saw either one of these or its Plymouth equivalent on the road the other day.
Cool
I believe 1990 was last year made, probably had all the kinks ironed out. I had a first year 1978. It was junk, burned oil, front spring broke just from sitting. I wouldn’t have revived that thing😉
This one is too far gone in my opinion too. I think we’ve gone about as far as I want to with it. Destroyed interior & shot out windows was the nail in the coffin.
My first car was a 78' Plymouth Horizon, so thanks for the nightmare flashbacks. Put some MMO in it, worked for me!
Wow, way back. Was 78 the first year?
Fun to watch. I had an 87. I bought it new and put 85k miles on it before everything started to go.
Very nice. Buyers remorse or did you enjoy owning it?
@2StallGarage I loved it. However, it had a defective clutch. The first clutch was replaced under warranty at 7k miles. The second clutch was replaced on a weekend, traveling from Texas to NY at 19k miles. The last clutch was replaced around 26k miles and lasted until I got rid of the car. Originally, I wanted the GHL, but they stopped making them. However, the GLHS was the Omni to have.
@flyonwall360 it’s fun to imagine being in a new, excellent condition, Omni in its day. Thank you for sharing.
90 was the best year for these, I had one and drove the hell out of it of course mine was a carburetor version and that gave lots of issues. These will blow a head gasket in a heart beat so watch out
Understood. I think it's too far gone to go any further with unfortunately. If the windows hadn't been shot out, it might be a different story. Have a great day.
Great video blessings brother
Joe! I hope you have a good weekend coming up. God bless you my friend.
About to go pick up a 1993 dakota with 77k original miles. Motor is bad but he has a replacement. Anyway he also has one of these there that I want to snag as well.
Sounds like fun to me. Enjoy as you pick them up and as you work on them.
Good job
It's on life support, but we'll keep rehabbing it until it's road worthy again.
Awesome seeing it fire up like that. Is that your dually n the background?
Hey buddy, the white 1 ton is my dads. He just got it. I have a 1994 two tone red & white Ford. (inherited it when a family member passed).
@@2StallGarage yeah I knew urs was white and red I thought I saw it in the background when you were at your parents working on the Omni. Didn't know if ya got it up n going again or not
@GlassWerx well… I just put more transmission fluid in it. 😁
@@2StallGarage so it's running good again or just testing it out.
oh man I love drum brakes, nice work brotha!!!
Appreciate your encouragement always! Thank you. 🏁
cool car
It’s a fun little car. 🙂
That one is a 1990 with the one year only dashboard design. I used to have a 1988 Horizon for many years. It did not have an airbag, had an 85mph speedometer and just a 5 digit odometer. I got about 280k miles out of it (need to estimate that since the odometer broke at 250k, or 50k rolled twice).
Nice 👍
There's three abandoned Plymouth Horizons at an old gas station near me, if I had the space and I was a little more passionate about these cars I'd totally see if it be able to take em and fix em
Fun, reliable-ish, and underappreciated back in its day.
@@2StallGarage I do definitely like the look of the car, and I honestly really like these 80s style cars too
@charliesnark6535 yes 🙌
Good.job. Nice car 👍👍👏👏👏
Thanks for the encouragement! 👍
G'day mate!! 🙂
Cheers bud!
what a jem! ill start the bidding at 4750.
LOL. You’re funny!
So what did you do with it? Too good to waste. They were such fun to drive compared to many cars of their era.
It’s parked out by the barn. Should be back in the shop this summer and then listed for sale.
I wished I was having that luck with my 1990 horizon. It's been a 8yr nightmare. And I'm no closer to getting it back on the road. Matter of fact I'm starting to think that I'm further. Got any options for me holler!
I’ll keep you posted as I work on this. Should start working on it again soon.
@@2StallGarage thank you, my father built that car.and I've owned it since it was new. Only has 65,000 miles. While trying to fix it. The worst now happened (undercarriage rust started). If you know of a place that supplies rubber seal for door /window. Would help tremendously. Is it true universal seals really don't hold up? Thank you once again.
My first car was an 80 omni. Brown with FAT wood grain. No female ever saw the inside of that pos. Didnt realize that the rear wheel wells were rotted when i jumped an old railroad bridge. The rear suspension made gulwings out of the wheel wells and the rear bumper about hit the pavement. Sent her out to pasture in style.
We just may do that. Hopefully you got some good air on the jump. 🙂
@@2StallGarage About as much air as one could get in 1.7L omni that topped out at 64mph downhill 😆😆😆
@williamdesmarais4931 😂
🏁🏁🏁
My mother had a 90' horizon bought new in 89'
Nice
@@2StallGarage i enjoyed it I was 16 when she got it.
@@WilliamBonac-h2c they’re fun little cars in my opinion. 👍
Are you going to put it back on the road , as a driver ?
We’re certainly tossing the idea around.
Did you ever think to use your body weight to help loosen those lug nuts ?
Your advice would help save my back. I’d do well to remember this for the future. 🤝
If it was a carb version it would have started easy, fuel injection goes bad when it sits
I would rather have dealt with a carb on this as well.
