And... I saw Danko, Fjeld and Anderson a year or so after the Band gig, and when the band left the stage Danko had to pass me. When he passed I asked him to sign his first solo CD (the one you har snippets of in The Last Waltz). He first said "Meet me backstage a little later...", but then he saw what CD I had and said "Oh, you got that one? Wow! Here, hold my guitar"! Soooo.... I got to hold his acoustic guitar while he signed the CD, and I praised him for his work both with The Band and solo!
Rick was very kind to his fans. Met him a few times and he was always appreciative. I saw someone ask him for an autograph once and he laughed saying he was glad to because it beat being a butcher!
Rick is my favorite and I love all of them they have been super bands together for years like Traveling Wilburys and Cream and so on but these guys were the genuine super band I've recorded the last waltz watch at least 2 times a week well just felt like saying something
I saw Danko solo, in ‘87 or so at Christene’s in Dennis, MA. Hate to say, the performance wasn’t great…I brought my Big Pink album with me, asked him if he’d sign it. His eyes grew wide…”Man I haven’t seen THAT in a long time!”. He took a long look at the inside cover, pointing people out to me…”There’s my mom, bless her soul…there’s my dad, bless his soul…”there’s Robbie Robertson’s mom”…he went on and on. He signed it…an unforgettable moment.

I can honestly say there will never be anything close to them. They wear their heart and soul on their sleeves. RIP Levon, Rick and Richard you are all truly missed.
When I was a Senior in high school, I got home one day in 1984 and noticed a brown labeled CD on my dad’s player. It was simply titled The Band. Turned it over to look at the songs, and I noticed that The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down was on it. Vaguely recalled hearing it as a little boy (and I realized later that it was the Joan Baez version that I remembered), so I put it on. Blown away, I started at the beginning. By the time that King Harvest faded out, I was hooked. I had never heard an entire album where ALL of the songs were at least very good. Dad gets home from work. I have 2 favorite bands, THE BEATLES and THE BAND, in no particular order... I saw THE BAND a few months after Richard Manuel passed on... He was alive when I bought my concert tickets, and he was gone by the time of the amazing concert. That show is in the top three concerts I've ever seen... and I've seen over 200 shows!!! Amazing talents! Love The Band. It was great to discover this fantastic more recent video. Their incredible songs will always live on in the hearts and minds of their devoted fans. Thank you for keeping the music alive and sharing this video. It's a rare gem.
Great musicians all had something unique to offer to the Band First saw them at Watkins Glen in NY in 1973 with the Dead and Allman Bros Those were the days 🎇
I am just amazed and stunned when I watch this....then at the same time broken hearted and sad that they are no more. I wonder if they now know how incredible and adored they are then and even now. Miss them all so much.
I did not know that Levon played the bass guitar so well. He can really groove. I've never seen one of these concerts from the 90's, even though I had all of the music from the reformed BAND. It's great to see how well Rick performed live. Too soon gone, man.
Raoul Duke It was at the UNO Lakefront Arena. The band really wasn’t great that night, but they killed it at the fairgrounds I think was the day before. I saw both performances. My first jazz fest!
I was there. Buckwheat Zydeco opened the show and did a cover of the Stones Beast of Burden. After that everything got hazy. Glad to see this, thanks Txphillyphan.
Rick died on 10th December 1999 at 12 pm. I know this because it was the exact time and date I met my future husband. The news brought me down from cloud nine with a bump that day.
Ricks voice ;to me,is so beautiful ,calming, and smooth. By far my favorite Levon's is awesome as well. Can't go 1 day w/o watching this show. What a blessing to have this.
I'm studying every detail, the year, looking up each artist, I was there and I missed it, now age 63 I'm zeroed in on the only decent things in life, this is one.
I’m soon to be 20 and wish I would’ve been able to see these guys perform in concert as I love their sound that they make. It always makes my day to hear any of their songs wether it’s from the original days, days with the cate bros, or the 90’s I still love hearing them. Thank u for uploading this
they came to manhattan kansas many years ago. the people were in awe at how,at various times during the "show", they all switched places and each one played the others' instrument. amazing
I'm about to travel around from Philadelphia to play bars, open mics and all that good stuff. Is Manhattan KS a a good town for music? I have Wichita as a spot too. Thanks, cheers, long live Levon and the Hawks and The Band
Jim Weider is killin here. Tone, taste and chops. Obviously has some influence from Robbie. A bit more refined than Robbie's slash and burn take no prisoners playing, but still has the feel for the material.
Back in the day, I saw this lineup front row in the old Ontario Place revolving stage in Toronto. Terrific show! Also, I'm wondering who has seen the earlier VHS of them touring Western Canada after Robertson had left. They had added extra talent such as the Cates brothers, I believe. Man, they were red hot and tighter than a witches wtf. Track it down and enjoy. Would love to find a digitized and remastered version. The performances are worthy of such treatment.
I’m 26, so I wasn’t born until 8 months & 7 days after this concert, but The Band, and more specifically, Levon, has had such an impact on my life. My brother played their version of ‘Atlantic City’ for me when I was 10, and that was it. I went down the rabbit hole of The Band & music inspired by/similar to the Band. Top 5 are The Band, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison & Talking Heads.
I was at this show. Buckwheat Zydeco was also there. They were professionally recording this show. I've waited 22 years for this show to surface. I always wondered what happened to the tapes.

\WOW! They had it all JUST RIGHT here. I never thought I'd view a better live performance and recording by The Band than The Last Waltz, but this tops it in my opinion. Levon, Rick, Garth and these others gave amazing performances here, and the sound production is THES BEST one can ask for. Hats off to all who were involved in the PHENOMENAL DELIVERY of music at its FINEST!!!!
RR had his last waltz with these friends but this kicks it up another level the last waltz was a biography this is Saturday night pink as Levon once said . a great band will always replace itself they done it solid here
Today I got the news that Robbie Robertson passed away. I understand he is not in this formation but anyway I wanted to listen to The Band after so many years. I am a Latin American and after a while of success in the early '70s this band disappeared from our record stores and radio waves. How would you classify their music: rock, folk-rock, fusion?
From his home in Woodstock, New York, the amiable Canadian also expressed his desire to make an album with Keith Richards, explained why he took a long hiatus from recording, and offered some less-than-flattering observations on old Bandmate Robbie Robertson. MATTHEW LEWIS: Rick, on the new album, I really like your version of Twilight. Why did you pick that particular old Robbie Robertson song to record? RICK DANKO: I hate to say this, but it's as much of a Rick Danko song as it is a Robbie Robertson song. I just forgot to seek (credit). Robbie was very tight with sharing those responsibilities. That's why he's where he is, and that's why we are where we are, to make a long story short... He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity, MATTHEW: Are there a lot of old Band songs that you feel you should have been credited on? RICK: I feel that way about the whole band. Especially the music. A lot of them stories, Levon (Helm, Band singer and drummer) told a lot of great stories that we worked in the lyrics for songs. But that's behind us. I feel much the way Mike Love (of the Beach Boys) feels. (Love sued bandmate Brian Wilson for denying him songwriting credits.) Maybe I'll have to end up hiring his lawyer (laughs). MATTHEW: What's your relationship with Robbie these days? RICK: I don't really speak to him or see him that much. He's hanging out in that Armani crowd, I guess, wearing them Armani suits. If it turns out there’s a heaven, nothing would make me happier than I arrive to sound of Levon and Rick singing melody and harmony, respectively, together. Or Richard and Rick.
Wooo! Rick is tearin up that bass playin Remedy! Funky! Sure doesn't look like that's what he's playin or moving to either but he's always been like that. Very unique. Wish I could have met him or seen him play.
Good friend of Rick's here...spent a lot of time on their bus and going show to show with the best seats! Rick was a total gentleman, witty and so very kind. One night during a solo tour after my husband past away he dedicated Long Black Veil to me. I remember CSN opening for The Band several times! Some great times with a wonderful friend ❤️!!
Levon - wonderful drummer and singer, and he was one of those musicians that pick up other instruments (blues harp; electric bass, guitar, and mando and make it sound like it was his main axe!
I was doing a 3 year stint in the U.S. ARMY when The Band started out with their 1st album and have been a huge fan ever since, and was really taken by the fact that each member was a multi-instrumentalist except Robbie who made up for it with his poetic abilities...Danko's driving energy force always amazed me so much that I still have a hard time believing he is gone from us, as is the remainder of The Band. Only Garth remains to carry the torch from the original line up. There will never be another Band to equal their joint talents of diversity. R.I.P...And lay thyselves neath the Strength of your Music !!! Sadly Missed...
wow don't know about you guys but i can really see how much richard was missed. he sort of centered the band on that big-ass grand of his. this blues stuff is alright. i guess ya gotta live on and pay the bills. life goes on
Richard was my favorite, also a tortured soul. My favorite white singer ever . Garth a master way above anyone's league. But still The Band, the whole much better than the sum of its parts. Gonna go play in a station now!
It's a different band without Richard for sure. They adjusted and kept on doing what they did best. "IMND" is the one tune that really sounds like the old Band.
Crazy Mama - Levon on bass!! That tickles me too. And not surprisingly he's right in the pocket, driving the tune! Good drummers know what goes into a bass line. Levon rocked no matter what he played. The memory of all you gave us rocks on too.
There was a 500 capacity venue in Chattanooga around this time - Market Street Performance Hall. This version of The Band played there 3 times over 3 years. First night they opened with REMEDY and launched into what became the coolest most incredible night of music I have ever experienced. Their contract had them playing for only 75 minutes including encores-3 phenomenal hours later...! LOLOL They were so fucking cool! Great memories! God bless 'em
Thanks so much!!!!.Funny-all the stuff about Robbie and the guys, fact and fiction-his Tele sound was a central piece to the sound of that Band. With all that supposedly went down-RR presence is still there.Great stuff.Watkins Glenn was heaven in the rain.
It's a little bit a misnomer. It's a festival and their set was prior to the Allman's. EDIT: Actually, this appears to be one of the Jazz Fest night concerts, which means they were technically openers or double-headliners for a fundraiser.

LW blows this out of the water. Its like champagne versus Miller High Life. Def don’t need two drummers when you literally have arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time.
Saw them a few times with Dylan and again at the Montreal Jazz Fest this same tour/year and earlier in the eighties also... always great always class acts wish I had driven down to see Levon's Midnight Ramble Shows shoulda woulda coulda but didn't
Attention anyone who thinks they are a superstar: First, leave your ego in your music case. No one in The Band tried to be a star because they all came by it naturally from doing what they did for love instead of money or fame. Work hard enough and one day you might have a small portion of the talent of these guys. They did it by adding raw talent and total cooperation with their fellow band members and the whole was so much greater than the parts. Each was a natural-born virtuoso who understood how to contribute to the whole rather than try to out shine the others. Blind Willie McTell and The Weight are great examples. Regardless of who is taking the lead, just listen to the incredible and often unique licks the others add in the background. I have mixed thousands of acts and never seen any where no one slacks off while someone else is taking the lead except The Band. Watch closely those not in the spotlight at the moment and you will see everyone is trying as hard as they can all the time. If there is a secret to their incredible fame that would be it.
FYI: This is the incomplete show and, since it's an indoor night concert, it's unlikely this was actually from Jazz Fest. My guess is that it's actually what the automated description says -- Live at Mountain State in Charleston, not New Orleans. Weirdly, though, Danko says "Thank you, New Orleans" at the end, so at least the audio has to be from it. So weird. Similar setlist, though: www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-band/1994/fair-grounds-race-course-new-orleans-la-53c6b719.html
I saw them earlier that day at the fairgrounds (site of the jazz festival). This show was at the lakefront (University of New Orleans). They had nightime shows there during the jazz festival.
Never understood what good could come out of 2 drum-kits in use, at the same time, basically just doing the exact same beat. I see why there would be 2 different drum-kits and drummers at a concert like this, where Levon often played mandolin, and especially back in the day when Richard would sometimes take a seat behind the kit.. But I cannot understand why two drummers play the exact same thing. The sound isn't getting better, though maybe a slight increase in power But the thing I liked about Levon's old drum set-up back in the day, was the "dryness" of the sound. It didn't have a huge growling snare-drum or toms.. I've got so many things I'd like to talk to and ask Levon about. R.I.P, poor old dirt farmer.
After Levon shot himself in the leg practicing his quick draw with a Colt 45 that belonged to his father, he felt he needed help keeping the kick drum going and Randy was added... It also then gave him the freedom to play Mandolin or Harp Bass or even Guitar which he did at times on Strawberry Wine which he wrote..

Great musicians all had something unique to offer to the Band First saw them at Watkins Glen in NY in 1973 with the Dead and Allman Bros Those were the days 🎇
How about Levon playing the mandolin, high-hat, kick drum and singing a great version Rag Mamma Rag - all at the same fucking time - unreal!!!
elvez1231 Amazing.
Levon rocks! He was one of the era's best.
I am just amazed and stunned when I watch this....then at the same time broken hearted and sad that they are no more. I wonder if they now know how incredible and adored they are then and even now. Miss them all so much.
I WOULD BE A LOT SADDER IF THERE WAS NO FILM. JPC.
I did not know that Levon played the bass guitar so well. He can really groove. I've never seen one of these concerts from the 90's, even though I had all of the music from the reformed BAND. It's great to see how well Rick performed live. Too soon gone, man.
Actually, Levon taught Rick Danko to play the bass in 1961
BTW, Rick started out as a lead guitarist, then Levon taught him to play bass and he took over that job
I've always had the feeling Levon could play anything, and teach it, too. That man was a walking, talking, singing, brilliant musical genius.
Levon Helm could probably play almost any instrument you put in front of him
Garth taught them all also.
Had a band with Rick Bell in 1963...practiced in his parents basement on Yonge Blvd in Toronto...always good music. Rest in peace Rick.

Miss Marie here.. Professor Louie mixed and produced the audio for this
concert event for The Band...great times!
And what an awesome job, as always, he does!!!
Not surprised to hear this Miss Marie. Louie is the best!
What venue was this recorded at? I'm from NOLA and don't remember it.
Raoul Duke
It was at the UNO Lakefront Arena. The band really wasn’t great that night, but they killed it at the fairgrounds I think was the day before. I saw both performances. My first jazz fest!
@@dathead3813 What do you mean the band wasn't great that night? Maybe you saw something else?
I was there. Buckwheat Zydeco opened the show and did a cover of the Stones Beast of Burden. After that everything got hazy. Glad to see this, thanks Txphillyphan.
The Band , the best Band in the World
Yes Walt totally understand your words man , been listening to this band for 45years never gonna stop 🏴🏴a Scot looking in 🏴🏴
I love the Band and Richard Manuel RIP was my favorite singer as is Rick and Levon RIP and then Robbie.
Wonderful to see them at this level of performance. Thank you for posting.
I'm studying every detail, the year, looking up each artist, I was there and I missed it, now age 63 I'm zeroed in on the only decent things in life, this is one.
Outstanding performance!!
This show was not mixed by Fred Derby. It was mixed by myself and Louie Hurwitz.
I’m soon to be 20 and wish I would’ve been able to see these guys perform in concert as I love their sound that they make. It always makes my day to hear any of their songs wether it’s from the original days, days with the cate bros, or the 90’s I still love hearing them. Thank u for uploading this
The director, editor and cameramen had their tech chops together on this one..
they came to manhattan kansas many years ago. the people were in awe at how,at various times during the "show", they all switched places and each one played the others' instrument. amazing
Wow went to Bakery Science school there loved Manhattan, KS. Loved the Band
I'm about to travel around from Philadelphia to play bars, open mics and all that good stuff. Is Manhattan KS a a good town for music? I have Wichita as a spot too. Thanks, cheers, long live Levon and the Hawks and The Band
UMA BANDA QUE MARCOU ÉPOCA NOS ANOS 60/70,SÓ QUE,PERMANECE ATÉ HOJE!
SEMPRE CLASSE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They were spot on this night. Love that version of Atlantic City
Jim Weider is killin here. Tone, taste and chops. Obviously has some influence from Robbie. A bit more refined than Robbie's slash and burn take no prisoners playing, but still has the feel for the material.
Way more class and alot less ego than RR too :)
Masters of their Craft,,,,, excellent .
Top 5 are The Band, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison & Talking Heads.
wow haven,t smiled this much in a long time .. one of my favorite groups of all time . this concert rocks ! thanks
This is a hundred times better than I expected
DAMN THIS IS REALLY GOOD
I was at this show. Buckwheat Zydeco was also there. They were professionally recording this show. I've waited 22 years for this show to surface. I always wondered what happened to the tapes.
I was at Jazz Fest on the second weekend in 94 so this must have been first weekend. Where was this show?
ahhhh, Blues Alley. Nice!

I feel like Levon and Garth were just made of music. Actually all of them were. Angels of joy. And Levon plays a perfect blues boogie on the bass.
RR had his last waltz with these friends but this kicks it up another level the last waltz was a biography this is Saturday night pink as Levon once said . a great band will always replace itself they done it solid here
I
Today I got the news that Robbie Robertson passed away. I understand he is not in this formation but anyway I wanted to listen to The Band after so many years. I am a Latin American and after a while of success in the early '70s this band disappeared from our record stores and radio waves. How would you classify their music: rock, folk-rock, fusion?
Rock 🎶. Rest peacefully now, to Robbie Roberson.❤
He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity,
MATTHEW: Are there a lot of old Band songs that you feel you should have been credited on?

I really in love with this show!!! Love this version of The Weight, what a swing!!!! What a groove!
If it turns out there’s a heaven, nothing would make me happier than I arrive to sound of Levon and Rick singing melody and harmony, respectively, together. Or Richard and Rick.
I am and will always be completely in love with their vocal harmonies🤘🎶🤘
Wow this lineup is devastatingly nailing it - !!!!
Sadly Missed...
one of the best bands ever!
wow don't know about you guys but i can really see how much richard was missed. he sort of centered the band on that big-ass grand of his. this blues stuff is alright. i guess ya gotta live on and pay the bills. life goes on
Richard was my favorite, also a tortured soul.
LEVON ON THE BASS on Crazy Mama!! They sound soooooooooo goooooood!!
Crazy Mama - Levon on bass!! That tickles me too. And not surprisingly he's right in the pocket, driving the tune! Good drummers know what goes into a bass line. Levon rocked no matter what he played. The memory of all you gave us rocks on too.
I saw them a couple of times during this period - Richard was gone & Robbie wasn't part of it but no matter it was The Band - absolutely great
It makes no difference is such a beautiful song...it always puts tears in my eyes sooo beautiful .
The late , great ,Mr Mark Lavon Helm ! The greatest dancing drummer .... EVER !
This is one of Rick's better performances in the 90s. Very nice!
Thanks for this fantastic post.
Super set ….I love it so much..
Thanks a lot for this superb video quality show!
Hard to believe that Richard died a whole 8 years before this show.
Levon's voice sounds fantastic on this recording.
Thanks so much!!!!.Funny-all the stuff about Robbie and the guys, fact and fiction-his Tele sound was a central piece to the sound of that Band. With all that supposedly went down-RR presence is still there.Great stuff.Watkins Glenn was heaven in the rain.
No tele-prompters at all. The amazing The Band
I've seen clips of this..but never the entire thing. Thanks so much for uploading. :)
ya aint lying. yes, yes, yes they changed the world. my world. and many other peoples world
My heart is happy. That’s the effect The Band has had on me for decades. I love them. ❤🎶❤️😎
IS THERE ANYTHING LEVON HELM CAN'T DO??
Levon rocked right up til the end
Levon had a one man band in high school. I saw a pic of him doing his one man band in a talent contest in Helena, Arkansas.
Bear children...
Get along with Robbie Robertson?
That was an awesome Blind Willie McTell
always loved Ricks voice!!
True talent.
This is phenomenal!!!
Cool. Just when you think you've seen them all another one pops up. Thanks :)
oh by the way ..the band shouldn't open for anyone . not for anyone!
It's a little bit a misnomer. It's a festival and their set was prior to the Allman's. EDIT: Actually, this appears to be one of the Jazz Fest night concerts, which means they were technically openers or double-headliners for a fundraiser.
@@BrianFairbanks1 They opened for the Dead at Garcia's last show, which seemed fine since they were longtime friends.

Great
One more thing....Garth is BADASS in that hat!
+lindyfralin wound that would be the Crocodile Dundee hat that was very popular when that movie came out.. i had very same hat and some f**n arsehole stole it from me..
thanks for the name of that hat...I'll be looking for one now on ebay...so sorry some fool stole yours
Incredible!!Thanks for publishing this!!
LW blows this out of the water. Its like champagne versus Miller High Life. Def don’t need two drummers when you literally have arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time.
I love this
This is so good. They are amazing.
I bought Music From Big Pink my junior year in high school, 1968. The Band became part of my soul.
Blind Willie McTell 23:30, gives me chills every time
Yes , a masterpiece from "Papa" Dylan (Father of Rock'n'Roll Spiritual Saga). What a musical poem!...
LOVE THESE GUYS!
Fabulous! Thank you!
Turn up the Mic for Danko!
Saw them a few times with Dylan and again at the Montreal Jazz Fest this same tour/year and earlier in the eighties also... always great always class acts wish I had driven down to see Levon's Midnight Ramble Shows shoulda woulda coulda but didn't
Attention anyone who thinks they are a superstar:
First, leave your ego in your music case.
Thrilled to have found this. Chrome casting onto my TV & sound bars. Awesome. Thanks.
Thanks. Hello from Richmond. California!
You need to listen to some Grateful Dead and Allman Bros and then you might get it.
SRM335 Will do! But could you try to explain your opinion? Because i'm genuinly interessed in the answer.
Levon plays other piano guitar harmonica hard to do if your locked to the drums.
Jack Kelly Levon didn't play piano..
