Thanks so much for the set list, I think it makes it easier to promote The Band, I'm often trying to turn young and old onto their unique sonic energy which was not only influential trailblazing, but an evolving concept of musical collaboration and love, through several linups. A setlist and dates make it easier to cross reference different renderings of songs over time, as with the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and many others from James Taylor to Chuck berry, to the Cure and the Stones.

A few days ago Robbie joined his brothers in Rock n Roll heaven where there are no differences just love and some great music! RIP boys and thank you for the great music you left us! My mother and Robbie were good friends back in the early 60’s, then with Ronnie when they lived on The Six Nations on the Grand River in “Caledonia” Ontario, Canada, otherwise known as the Reserve in “Caledonia”, then with the Hawks when their lives were just beginning in Rock n Roll! I hope she’s up there rocking with them! I go to the Reserve in “Caledonia” once a month and always think of the Band when I go. The song “Caledonia” is definitely a tribute to their beginning! What I love most about The Band is their concerts were all about the music, no flashy stage or gimmicks, just the guys their instruments and voices, they were that great! They will always be my favourite band! Not many bands can make you “feel” their music to your very core! Say what you want about Robbie, he held The Band together for as long as he could but you can’t compete with drugs and drugs are what destroyed The Band not Robbie! And his ego so many speak of was well earned, just look at his catalog of music!
It's always 'The Band' to me...Rest in Peace Levon, Richard, Rick...God Bless You Motherfuckers!!! God Bless Robbie Robertson, Garth and everyone else...I don't care who gets credit for what. As far as I'm concerned God always was the leader of this Band. Peace
i was at this show - just 16 at the time. they were opening for the grateful dead, and I got a ride to San Francisco from l.a. i only had a vague notion who the Band was at the time, but this started my long road of fandom. so amazing to revisit the show 40 years later. I would see them again a few months later at the Palamino club in l.a. at that gig, I saw Rick Danko at the bar, sat right next to him and ordered a beer. my fake id worked, and I got to hang with Danko for about a half hour and pepper him with dumb questions. he was nice and funny, and told stories of hanging with Garcia this very evening.
Yeah, I heard of the Palomino..... an old friend of mine played there------- I was jamming in Tampa at the time......... so I missed that part...... oh well, so much great music-------- so little time!!!!!
One of the Greatest Bands of all times. Rick Danko, Robbie, Levon Helm , Richard Manuel...had the smoothest sound. I watched the Last Waltz on big screen 28 times in a row!!!
It’s why The Last Waltz happened…Danko…Helm we’re junkies and Richard a alcoholic…..Robbie Robertson pulled the plug…..he knew it was just a matter of time…and man….that’s a heavy load…one junkie in a band sucks….but 2 and a alcoholic depressive…..that is what destroyed the band.
@@petersokol1603 You can throw Richard into the junkie list as well, according to Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. I love The Band...but I completely understand Robbie’s decision. Plus, he stated in Once Were Brothers that they were going to take a hiatus and work on individual projects...perhaps reforming after a couple of years. One thing that I never quite understood about Levon’s anger about The Last Waltz is his assertion that Robbie was shutting The Band down without an avenue of recourse for the others. Ok...then what are we doing watching this video? Don’t get me wrong: I love Levon, and I don’t take “sides” on the feud. All I know is that they DID reform, and if Levon was truly that angry at RR about The Last Waltz, why did he join Robbie onstage at a Rick Danko concert roughly a year after TLW?

Interesting how Robbie Robertson has been demonized and minimized from the Band in the dispute with Levon Helm. Let me state that I love Levon Helm, and that I saw him many times in concert, I met him personally and saw his 70th birthday party concert shortly before he died. He was a wonderful person. But, let's go back. In the Big Pink days with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm had left the Band and was touring without them. If you look at the Basement Tapes, you will not see Levon Helm. This was the Band's most fruitful time, as well as Dylan's. The groundbreaking "Music From Big Pink" album had eleven songs .Four were written by Robertson, four were written by Manuel. None was written by Helm. Manuel sang six songs, Danko sang four. Helm sang only one song, although it was "The Weight." Otherwise he acted as drummer, and nothing else. On the second album, "The Band" all twelve songs were written by Robertson. with help on two songs by Danko and Manuel. Manuel was considered the principal singer for the Band and sang on more songs than either Danko or Helm. Even on his grammy award winning album from 2008, "Dirt Farmer" Levon Helm wrote no songs. Why is Robertson demonized, why is Manuel diminished, and why is Levon Helm canonized. I thought this was ....'The Band'....
Have you ever been in a band? Robbie Robertson lip synced most of richard manuels parts live. He planned their "break-up", edited the last waltz with his buddy scorsese to give the final word as Robertson the maestro, and did nothing to help his old friends when they needed it most. He fancied himself the genius and them his "band" who played "his" music. I dont care who wrote the chords or the words to "the weight" or "the night they drove old dixie down", but I can tell you that those songs are what they are because of Levon Helm. And everytime that shit is played, Robbie Robertson collects a check. The band loved music. They just wanted to play. They didnt care about the business end and they should have, but Robbie Robertson is a terrrible human being. Levon cared about the music more than the money, which is why he left during the dylan era. He didnt like the vibes. He went to earn less money on an oil rig.
Clark Carmichael I met Levon. I love Levon.....and I love the Band....just think that Robbie Robertson has been isolated. I know that his solo music carries on the great song writing tradition of the Band.....I think that is the core of the Band's music....
and he is also a terrible, deceptive person. He lip synced dude. He wanted a mic that had no feed in front of him during live shows. Gimme a break. Its pretty obvious he did everything he could to inflate his own persona and diminish the others. He was living with scorsese when THEY edited richard manuel out of the last waltz. THEY made it look like Robbie was singing Richards parts. How terrible is that? Does it get any worse?
***** Robbie was a very skilled prolific writer, he had a system I learned too, but he was also a great lyricist, though the song that earned The Band the most money The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down the later 2/3rds of it were written by Levon, not Robbie though he never got any writing credits..for it as Robbie's version was to sympathetic to the North.. Robbie betrayed all the members of The Band with the Last Waltz Contract, as it was actually with the labels and studio and Last Waltz Productions and not the Band as they were lead to believe which was only Robbie and Martin Scorsese..the Band members signed where it said, "Wereas it pertains to you.." when I saw that, among other sections I knew what went down...who decides what pertains to Them... Also remember Rick Danko and Richard Manuel were also great writers and both had written with Dylan, Robbie learned song writing from Dylan but also if you are really familiar with his genius John Simon.. I know all too much of all this to go into great detail, they were my friends but also I handled a lot of intricate personal details for a number of them as did a very few trusted others...but with any one of them all five The Bad would not have been the same they were a true unique ensemble that's one of the things that made them so great..any one of them could have been a band leader on their own it was like having five generals or in Garth's case 4 Generals and a High Admiral...who they all paid attention and respect too..!
Our parents said the same thing when bands like Zeppelin, The Band & Hendrix came out. Why can’t the music sound more like Bing Crosby or Sinatra. We all think our music was the best
Especially on Mystery Train! Richard and Terry are banging on those drums; Levon and that harp; Garth and Ernie on the keys; Earl and Rick bending strings and Ron providing the funk on bass! I Love it!
those years were 'sex, drugs, rock 'n roll'...but ya gotta admit, they did some fantastic music! so, who cares...they left us with some great music, to last us til we drop! i could listen to these guys all nite long!

I saw them in a show on this concert tour, and again their next tour too and in concert-going since 1971 all I can say is they were the best concerts I've ever seen, even without J.R.R. and to answer an earlier question, yes, the Cate brothers filled in very, very nicely.
@@grant5603 Richard had a very soulful voice, but so did Rick. I have a problem when someone points out that Levon, Richard etc. was the soul of The Band. They were ALL the soul of The Band. Without Robbie songwriting there would not be all the wonderful songs, and without Rick, Richard and Levon singing those lyrics, it would not be the same, and it would not be the same without Garth's musical genius.

Saw this with a brother of mine, Sammy RIP he loved The Band and he got me to love The Band too, I miss my brother Sammy every day, and it's funny because I dream of him just about every night, he's there, I wake up laughing out loud and my wife says what are you dreaming about? And I just smile with a tear in my eye...
I'm thankful I saw Rick play a smaller club in Toronto a year or 2 before he passed. Tough to see him high-inebriated and not at his best. But hearing him sing "It Makes No Diff" one last time will stay with me forever.. 😥
@@lornestein7248 I also saw Danko at a small club, but much earlier (I'd say around 1985). He did a duo acoustic set with Paul Butterfield in Fort Lauderdale. They were great that night.
The blend ever of telling historic event through rock and roll.I only seen them once at Watkins Glen.I was 14 and my sister and ex bro in law took me and told my folk we were camping in Letchworh St park.Of the Dead,Alman Bros. and the Band,the Band got me going the best. Never heard of them before but the wow factor was real,plus I seen things a catholic school boy could not even imagine that weekend. Bigger than Woodstock!
@@reneaellis9466 My initial reaction was going to have been a snarky response regarding the plethora of great classics that the others wrote after they reformed, and what did Robbie ever write? However, my response is actually to implore you (and others with that “what did Robbie ever do” or “Robbie screwed the others” mentality) to read Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. She touches on the feud over songwriting credits and provides an excellent explanation regarding the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s very well done and, most important, she does it as impartially as possible. There’s a difference between songwriting credits and performance/arrangement credits. And the fact that the others...with the exception of Levon...sold their performance credits back to Robbie is not Robbie’s fault. I used to take Levon’s side on all this, after reading his autobiography, but something just didn’t sit right about it. Turns out that the slightest bit of research turns up commentary from insiders like Ronnie Hawkins, John Simon, and Johnathan Taplin, who all agree that Robbie wrote the songs that he was credited for and, most important, that Richard/Rick/Levon were too whacked out to be helpful in this regard. Robbie, correctly, pointed out that it was the others’ JOBS to be helping with arrangements...which they were properly credited for. Now, I will say that I think that Jim Weider is every bit as good of a guitarist as Robbie. But that’s not criticism of RR. That’s praise.
@@robertbruce6865 You are correct about the songwriting credits. Besides just because they didn't get royalties from the songs, they all did make a lot of money, from record sales and touing. Barneey Hoskyns biograhy of The Band, provided a more balanced view of all of them, none of them were perfect or angels, but Robbie does not deserve all the hate he gets on the internet.
@@hannejeppesen1809 Performance Royalties netted all of them an estimated $100,000 each annually. In the 70’s. Invested correctly, they all could’ve been set for life. Instead, it largely was injected, snorted, smoked, or drank away. I love those guys. But I love truth as well.
@@robertbruce6865 RIck himself said in an interview "did you every make a million dollars real fast, it can ruin your life'. However, he also said several years after The Band broke up, he was supporting a few charities, and it was nice to be able to give back. I feel like you do, I love them I especially love Rick and Robbie. I have made mistakes with money (although I did not waste in on drugs) so I'm not being judgemental. Hoskyns in his book, although plenty critical of Robbie, also call him the adult in the room and smart about business.
Just watched this today and oh my goodness!!!! This band had so much talent it is ridiculous!!! I too am a Levon lover!!! But you can't a damn thing away from Rick Danko!!! His vocals were awesome and his playing speaks for itself!!! They ALL had their own way to shine for sure!!! As far as Robbie Robertson people don't realize that's who put this band in motion!!! This is actually his band!!!! I loved it when they were Dylan's band way back when!!! The Last Waltz is a must see concert!!!! First time I saw this it was in the movie theater and IT JUST DONT GET BETTER THAN THIS!!!! One of my favorite bands of all time!!!! Love and miss these guys!!!!! Love for Levon and The Last Waltz are absolute must See's!!!! Danko singing It Makes No Difference is by far my very favorite song by The Band!!!!
Actually Hawkins was at the base. He started with Levon and brought a 16 year old R.R. to ARK where Levon gave the thumps up (per RR). Eric Clapton said he originally believed RR was leader until he saw Levon led the band.
@@larryhecksher7175 Yes. Levon was the first of the five to join Ronnie Hawkins. The others followed later as replacements. Robbie got the gig by overhearing Ronnie Hawkins complaining that he needed some new material for an album and going home and writing two songs for him.
Boy, are you misinformed. I believe that he was the last one brought into the fold. Levon Helm is the main reason these five people were brought together. They were called 'Levon and the Hawk's, after they left Ronnie Hawkins.

Levon and Robbie never spoke after that farewell performance because they wanted to keep playing.... until Levon was on his death bed... Robbie came to his room and held his hand but they never spoke again!!! The four went on to make music together without Robbie, until Richard took his life!!!! I LOVE THE BAND!!!! ❤️✌️🎶🎶
Ya Robbie was the only one who wanted to break up the band and have their "last concert" thus making everyone who didnt get writing credit (everyone but him) poor. He is also quoted as saying that he should take the writing credit for songs because it " would be easier for everyone to get paid" Pretty low Robbie. Richie W you should read up before you speak up.
justsayinwhatup Didn't you watch the Last Waltz? By that point they had been on the road for 16 years. I think Robbie saw the heavy drugs and alcohol increasing steadily and he didn't want anything tragic, like the death of a bandmate, to happen to them on the road, which it did. He never said he wanted the Band to stop, he just had to bow out of touring. As for the money, Richard, Levon and Rick had quite a bit! Levon always said "Richard was the guy with his glass in the air, making the toast "Spend it all!". Can't blame JR when the guys blew their money on drugs and sex. Yes, he should have distributed some song writing royalties, but the others simply weren't writing new tunes. Richard had nearly stopped writing all together, and Levon is credited with 3 songs from their entire career. It's a shame Levon died broke, but wtf most rock stars do. Love all the members equally, they were superior in every way! Let the ghosts of the past make peace amongst themselves please!

Poor Levon is like poor Ginger Baker, he couldn't write songs, and later he wished he had songwriting money coming in, boo hoo.
And now Robbie has sadly gone...they certainly were an amazing band...my all time favourite band ever. Thank goodness we have The Last Waltz to remind us of their brilliance.

@@madsjuul1350 The other side to that is Robbie holding The Band together while 3 of the others were whacked out on various chemicals (a view that none other than Ronnie Hawkins holds: his commentary about the drugging is that chemicals ruined what could have been the best band in the world). I don’t deny that Robbie has an incredible ego, but I suppose that writing some of the most classic songs of the Rock and Roll era might give it some validity. I highly recommend reading Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon for clarification of the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s an impartial take, and one worth reading. I love ALL the guys, but facts are facts.
Rick's It Makes No Difference is my favorite song by him. Also there is a video of Levon & Rick singing 22:12 backup on a Sinead O'Connor appearance with Roger Waters. The song is MOTHER. Garth Hudson plays accordion.

I've never watched a post "The Last Waltz" show. It's great to see Danko getting some six string time, and who doesn't love Levin on Mandolin with Richard on drums? A great showcase for talents which maybe in earlier shows were less obvious.
Thanks for sharing this. Wish I could have seen The Band and I only saw Levon one time in 2011 but SO blessed Ive been able to see bands such as Widespread Panic carry the torch into the multiverses. The magic is still out there🙏🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
seen the band a few times at the ontario place forum in toronto in the mid 80's great shows! didn't give a flying f**k if robbie wasn't there.. that was his choice to take off.. plenty guitarists as good if not better than robbie out there to choose from I first discovered rick and levon in a tiny coffeehouse doing an awesome acoustic show! that was first time i seen those 2 and had no idea who or what group they were from. i reasearched around and discovered they were from The Band and after listening to several songs on the 1st dvd I bought (it was a box set of their best work) after picking my jaw off the floor I bought more cd's and collected almost all their albums and got so hooked on these guys.. so sad and disheaartened they are not around anymore.. rest in peace Richard Rick and Levon.. may god carry your souls to a better place where you guys can rock it out in the heavens ;-)
Robbie wrote most of the songs but was by far the least important musically to the group. The songs he wrote would have never been as well known without the 3 incredible voices that sang them and the musical genius of Garth Hudson.
I came home from high school one day, and my dad had left his copy of the Brown Album out. I took a look at the songs...I’d never listened to them before...and recognized “Dixie” (probably from Joan Baez’s crappy remake) from my early childhood. So...I gave Dixie a listen, then decided to start the album from the beginning. My dad got home from work, and I...blown away by what I had just listened to...asked him if that was their Greatest Hits album (being simply named “The Band”). He laughed and said “No”; it was merely their second album and that he wore out 4 vinyl copies when it first came out. It’s been a 40 year love affair between myself and their music since. I have bought every book written about them, and I HIGHLY recommend Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. Once Were Brothers is a GREAT watch as well. I got to see them in Chicago in April of 96. One of the greatest nights of my life.
Levon Helm pulled out of the 1966 tour with Bob Dylan to go work on an oil rig. Robbie was the one to invite him to Woodstock after that gig. Enough said!
Richard is on point, so much better than his mid 70s performances. I think The Band in the late 70s early 80s produced some of the best performances in their careers. They just ooze music. I miss them.
Robbie Robertson's only reason for being WAS The Band. Proof is that after he left his career (?) consisted of nothing but insipidity. His solo work redefined mediocre.
+Nate Herman I agree his musical career yes not great but he has produced some amazing concert movies and other music things for film and tv that have all been top notch
My great rock and roll “What if” is...what if Clapton developed the nerve to actually ask if he could join The Band when he visited them in Woodstock after breaking up Cream because Big Pink moved him so much.
My first and only New Years shows in SF. Coudn't have had anyone better than the Band openning up for the Dead that night, They were superb, the band. So great to see and hear again.
Peter Harris Same here. Also the only time I saw the Band. It doesn't get any better than this and I still get chills thinking about it. Great to see and hear it again all these years later.
The path taken by members of "The Band" has such an adventurous element to it! Each band member made it a priority to play music! From anywhere and everywhere to "Big Pink" their commitment to Writing,rehearsing, arranging payed off ! Their time together honing their craft became something that will never be duplicated!
Levon, Danko,Manuel and Hudson created the sound of the band. They wanted to continue but Robbie wrote the lyrics. Drugs at the time was rob's problems! They all participated in partying and Robbie knew that he would be well off retiring. Read the levons biography and don't base your opinions on the movie the last waltz

Right on!!!! 62 here, but aging quickly....... maybe it was the acid..... maybe it was the pot..... maybe it was the beer...... but I played music professionally and wrote great songs and spent most of my life in the recording studio------ I am poor, but I LIVED my life!!!!! Robbie Robertson was supposed to be such a major part of the Band, and yet this tour was done without him, and The Band was still great! This tour used The Cate Brothers Band as a backing band. The Cates were twins Earl (lead guitar), Ernie Cate (keyboard), Ron Eoff (bass) and Terry Cagle (drums) who was Levon's nephew.

The guy who wrote almost all of their greatest songs (exactly how many Levon songs popped up on their post-Robbie records...you know, the same Robbie that “stole credits?). Enough. It’s just stupidity at this point.
Rick Danko wound up joining the Dead later on in this same show for their short third set, as did Maria Muldaur. Garth could've really had some fun if he'd guested on the Hammond for a song or two while Brent played keys ("Estimated" > "Eyes") in the second set comes to mind. Or manned the synth rig solo for Space. Narcolepsy has been mentioned as one of Garth's many quirks, so if he wanted to catch some shut-eye, that's also quite reasonable.
Honestly, after reading Testimony, which described some of Garth’s quirks, I have to wonder if he isn’t a high functioning Autistic. There’s no one size fits all diagnosis, but I’ve worked with Autistic children and some of the described quirks fits...along with the genius for music.
As a Deadhead and BandHead, DylanHead, I find that distressing. Yes, I know obsessed Deadheads but that's not the norm. Ignore the BAND? How does one DO that?

The Band Lost Manuel to suicide, Stan Szelest to a heart attack...Richard Bell died younger of Cancer, and Billy Preston was arrested roughly 6 months after joining The Band!

How long does the average person take to make up their mind to take their own life, I’ve been struggling with this situation since about last 3+years had fairly bad motorcycle accident left in chronic pain but listen to music like this help’s it’s about The Shape I’m in and the Band I’d wish to have been in and some Rest our souls let technology keep it alive for those who will want it to happen Play on encouraging standing up giving it all your might trap in the spot lights,,
That clunky, square sound is distinctly Canadian. Canadians don't groove. We sing like we're standing in a lineup and it's 30 below and our mouths and faces are practically frozen.
Grateful Dead & The Band - What a New Years to remember. I hear Garcia was a complete party mess, hanging out with David Crosby, among others. I think the freebase, and the dragon were running amok backstage. All 4 shows of the Deads were awesome, and this set to boot on NYE. Those were the days! Thanks for the upload, and the memories.

Thanks so much for the set list, I think it makes it easier to promote The Band, I'm often trying to turn young and old onto their unique sonic energy which was not only influential trailblazing, but an evolving concept of musical collaboration and love, through several linups. A setlist and dates make it easier to cross reference different renderings of songs over time, as with the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and many others from James Taylor to Chuck berry, to the Cure and the Stones.

A few days ago Robbie joined his brothers in Rock n Roll heaven where there are no differences just love and some great music! RIP boys and thank you for the great music you left us!
My mother and Robbie were good friends back in the early 60’s, then with Ronnie when they lived on The Six Nations on the Grand River in “Caledonia” Ontario, Canada, otherwise known as the Reserve in “Caledonia”, then with the Hawks when their lives were just beginning in Rock n Roll! I hope she’s up there rocking with them!
I go to the Reserve in “Caledonia” once a month and always think of the Band when I go.
The song “Caledonia” is definitely a tribute to their beginning!
What I love most about The Band is their concerts were all about the music, no flashy stage or gimmicks, just the guys their instruments and voices, they were that great!
They will always be my favourite band! Not many bands can make you “feel” their music to your very core!
Say what you want about Robbie, he held The Band together for as long as he could but you can’t compete with drugs and drugs are what destroyed The Band not Robbie! And his ego so many speak of was well earned, just look at his catalog of music!

i was at this show - just 16 at the time. they were opening for the grateful dead, and I got a ride to San Francisco from l.a. i only had a vague notion who the Band was at the time, but this started my long road of fandom. so amazing to revisit the show 40 years later. I would see them again a few months later at the Palamino club in l.a. at that gig, I saw Rick Danko at the bar, sat right next to him and ordered a beer. my fake id worked, and I got to hang with Danko for about a half hour and pepper him with dumb questions. he was nice and funny, and told stories of hanging with Garcia this very evening.

I love The Band...but I completely understand Robbie’s decision. Plus, he stated in Once Were Brothers that they were going to take a hiatus and work on individual projects...perhaps reforming after a couple of years.
One thing that I never quite understood about Levon’s anger about The Last Waltz is his assertion that Robbie was shutting The Band down without an avenue of recourse for the others. Ok...then what are we doing watching this video? Don’t get me wrong: I love Levon, and I don’t take “sides” on the feud. All I know is that they DID reform, and if Levon was truly that angry at RR about The Last Waltz, why did he join Robbie onstage at a Rick Danko concert roughly a year after TLW?

Interesting how Robbie Robertson has been demonized and minimized from the Band in the dispute with Levon Helm. Let me state that I love Levon Helm, and that I saw him many times in concert, I met him personally and saw his 70th birthday party concert shortly before he died. He was a wonderful person. But, let's go back. In the Big Pink days with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm had left the Band and was touring without them. If you look at the Basement Tapes, you will not see Levon Helm. This was the Band's most fruitful time, as well as Dylan's. The groundbreaking "Music From Big Pink" album had eleven songs .Four were written by Robertson, four were written by Manuel. None was written by Helm. Manuel sang six songs, Danko sang four. Helm sang only one song, although it was "The Weight." Otherwise he acted as drummer, and nothing else. On the second album, "The Band" all twelve songs were written by Robertson. with help on two songs by Danko and Manuel. Manuel was considered the principal singer for the Band and sang on more songs than either Danko or Helm. Even on his grammy award winning album from 2008, "Dirt Farmer" Levon Helm wrote no songs. Why is Robertson demonized, why is Manuel diminished, and why is Levon Helm canonized. I thought this was ....'The Band'....
Have you ever been in a band? Robbie Robertson lip synced most of richard manuels parts live. He planned their "break-up", edited the last waltz with his buddy scorsese to give the final word as Robertson the maestro, and did nothing to help his old friends when they needed it most. He fancied himself the genius and them his "band" who played "his" music. I dont care who wrote the chords or the words to "the weight" or "the night they drove old dixie down", but I can tell you that those songs are what they are because of Levon Helm. And everytime that shit is played, Robbie Robertson collects a check. The band loved music. They just wanted to play. They didnt care about the business end and they should have, but Robbie Robertson is a terrrible human being. Levon cared about the music more than the money, which is why he left during the dylan era. He didnt like the vibes. He went to earn less money on an oil rig.
Clark Carmichael I met Levon. I love Levon.....and I love the Band....just think that Robbie Robertson has been isolated. I know that his solo music carries on the great song writing tradition of the Band.....I think that is the core of the Band's music....

You'd have to have read the 70 page Contract for The Last Waltz as I have, to realize how Robbie and Scorsese ripped off the other Band members..
***** Robbie was a very skilled prolific writer, he had a system I learned too, but he was also a great lyricist, though the song that earned The Band the most money The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down the later 2/3rds of it were written by Levon, not Robbie though he never got any writing credits..for it as Robbie's version was to sympathetic to the North.. Robbie betrayed all the members of The Band with the Last Waltz Contract, as it was actually with the labels and studio and Last Waltz Productions and not the Band as they were lead to believe which was only Robbie and Martin Scorsese..the Band members signed where it said, "Wereas it pertains to you.." when I saw that, among other sections I knew what went down...who decides what pertains to Them... Also remember Rick Danko and Richard Manuel were also great writers and both had written with Dylan, Robbie learned song writing from Dylan but also if you are really familiar with his genius John Simon.. I know all too much of all this to go into great detail, they were my friends but also I handled a lot of intricate personal details for a number of them as did a very few trusted others...but with any one of them all five The Bad would not have been the same they were a true unique ensemble that's one of the things that made them so great..any one of them could have been a band leader on their own it was like having five generals or in Garth's case 4 Generals and a High Admiral...who they all paid attention and respect too..!

Especially on Mystery Train! Richard and Terry are banging on those drums; Levon and that harp; Garth and Ernie on the keys; Earl and Rick bending strings and Ron providing the funk on bass! I Love it!

I saw them in a show on this concert tour, and again their next tour too and in concert-going since 1971 all I can say is they were the best concerts I've ever seen, even without J.R.R. and to answer an earlier question, yes, the Cate brothers filled in very, very nicely.

Without Robbie songwriting there would not be all the wonderful songs, and without Rick, Richard and Levon singing those lyrics, it would not be the same, and it would not be the same without Garth's musical genius.

However, my response is actually to implore you (and others with that “what did Robbie ever do” or “Robbie screwed the others” mentality) to read Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. She touches on the feud over songwriting credits and provides an excellent explanation regarding the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s very well done and, most important, she does it as impartially as possible.
There’s a difference between songwriting credits and performance/arrangement credits. And the fact that the others...with the exception of Levon...sold their performance credits back to Robbie is not Robbie’s fault.
I used to take Levon’s side on all this, after reading his autobiography, but something just didn’t sit right about it. Turns out that the slightest bit of research turns up commentary from insiders like Ronnie Hawkins, John Simon, and Johnathan Taplin, who all agree that Robbie wrote the songs that he was credited for and, most important, that Richard/Rick/Levon were too whacked out to be helpful in this regard. Robbie, correctly, pointed out that it was the others’ JOBS to be helping with arrangements...which they were properly credited for.
Now, I will say that I think that Jim Weider is every bit as good of a guitarist as Robbie. But that’s not criticism of RR. That’s praise.
@@robertbruce6865 You are correct about the songwriting credits. Besides just because they didn't get royalties from the songs, they all did make a lot of money, from record sales and touing. Barneey Hoskyns biograhy of The Band, provided a more balanced view of all of them, none of them were perfect or angels, but Robbie does not deserve all the hate he gets on the internet.
@@hannejeppesen1809 Performance Royalties netted all of them an estimated $100,000 each annually. In the 70’s. Invested correctly, they all could’ve been set for life. Instead, it largely was injected, snorted, smoked, or drank away.

However, he also said several years after The Band broke up, he was supporting a few charities, and it was nice to be able to give back. I feel like you do, I love them I especially love Rick and Robbie. I have made mistakes with money (although I did not waste in on drugs) so I'm not being judgemental. Hoskyns in his book, although plenty critical of Robbie, also call him the adult in the room and smart about business.
Just watched this today and oh my goodness!!!! This band had so much talent it is ridiculous!!! I too am a Levon lover!!! But you can't a damn thing away from Rick Danko!!! His vocals were awesome and his playing speaks for itself!!! They ALL had their own way to shine for sure!!! As far as Robbie Robertson people don't realize that's who put this band in motion!!! This is actually his band!!!! I loved it when they were Dylan's band way back when!!! The Last Waltz is a must see concert!!!! Actually Hawkins was at the base. He started with Levon and brought a 16 year old R.R. to ARK where Levon gave the thumps up (per RR). Eric Clapton said he originally believed RR was leader until he saw Levon led the band.
@@larryhecksher7175 Yes. Levon was the first of the five to join Ronnie Hawkins. The others followed later as replacements. Robbie got the gig by overhearing Ronnie Hawkins complaining that he needed some new material for an album and going home and writing two songs for him.

Ya Robbie was the only one who wanted to break up the band and have their "last concert" thus making everyone who didnt get writing credit (everyone but him) poor. He is also quoted as saying that he should take the writing credit for songs because it " would be easier for everyone to get paid" Pretty low Robbie. Richie W you should read up before you speak up.
justsayinwhatup Didn't you watch the Last Waltz? By that point they had been on the road for 16 years. I think Robbie saw the heavy drugs and alcohol increasing steadily and he didn't want anything tragic, like the death of a bandmate, to happen to them on the road, which it did. He never said he wanted the Band to stop, he just had to bow out of touring. As for the money, Richard, Levon and Rick had quite a bit! Levon always said "Richard was the guy with his glass in the air, making the toast "Spend it all!". Can't blame JR when the guys blew their money on drugs and sex. Yes, he should have distributed some song writing royalties, but the others simply weren't writing new tunes. Richard had nearly stopped writing all together, and Levon is credited with 3 songs from their entire career. It's a shame Levon died broke, but wtf most rock stars do. Love all the members equally, they were superior in every way! Let the ghosts of the past make peace amongst themselves please!

@@madsjuul1350 The other side to that is Robbie holding The Band together while 3 of the others were whacked out on various chemicals (a view that none other than Ronnie Hawkins holds: his commentary about the drugging is that chemicals ruined what could have been the best band in the world).
I don’t deny that Robbie has an incredible ego, but I suppose that writing some of the most classic songs of the Rock and Roll era might give it some validity.
I highly recommend reading Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon for clarification of the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s an impartial take, and one worth reading.

I've never watched a post "The Last Waltz" show. It's great to see Danko getting some six string time, and who doesn't love Levin on Mandolin with Richard on drums? A great showcase for talents which maybe in earlier shows were less obvious.

seen the band a few times at the ontario place forum in toronto in the mid 80's great shows! didn't give a flying f**k if robbie wasn't there.. that was his choice to take off.. plenty guitarists as good if not better than robbie out there to choose from I first discovered rick and levon in a tiny coffeehouse doing an awesome acoustic show! that was first time i seen those 2 and had no idea who or what group they were from. i reasearched around and discovered they were from The Band and after listening to several songs on the 1st dvd I bought (it was a box set of their best work) after picking my jaw off the floor I bought more cd's and collected almost all their albums and got so hooked on these guys.. so sad and disheaartened they are not around anymore.. rest in peace Richard Rick and Levon.. may god carry your souls to a better place where you guys can rock it out in the heavens ;-)

Robbie wrote most of the songs but was by far the least important musically to the group. The songs he wrote would have never been as well known without the 3 incredible voices that sang them and the musical genius of Garth Hudson.
I came home from high school one day, and my dad had left his copy of the Brown Album out. I took a look at the songs...I’d never listened to them before...and recognized “Dixie” (probably from Joan Baez’s crappy remake) from my early childhood. So...I gave Dixie a listen, then decided to start the album from the beginning.
My dad got home from work, and I...blown away by what I had just listened to...asked him if that was their Greatest Hits album (being simply named “The Band”). He laughed and said “No”; it was merely their second album and that he wore out 4 vinyl copies when it first came out.
It’s been a 40 year love affair between myself and their music since. I have bought every book written about them, and I HIGHLY recommend Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. Once Were Brothers is a GREAT watch as well.
I got to see them in Chicago in April of 96. One of the greatest nights of my life.

Levon Helm pulled out of the 1966 tour with Bob Dylan to go work on an oil rig. Robbie was the one to invite him to Woodstock after that gig. Enough said!
Richard is on point, so much better than his mid 70s performances. I think The Band in the late 70s early 80s produced some of the best performances in their careers. They just ooze music. I miss them.

My first and only New Years shows in SF. Coudn't have had anyone better than the Band openning up for the Dead that night, They were superb, the band. So great to see and hear again.
Peter Harris Same here. Also the only time I saw the Band. It doesn't get any better than this and I still get chills thinking about it. Great to see and hear it again all these years later.
These guys are amazing, hard to believe it ever existed now.

The path taken by members of "The Band" has such an adventurous element to it! Each band member made it a priority to play music! From anywhere and everywhere to "Big Pink" their commitment to Writing,rehearsing, arranging payed off !
Their time together honing their craft became something that will never be duplicated!

Levon, Danko,Manuel and Hudson created the sound of the band. They wanted to continue but Robbie wrote the lyrics. Drugs at the time was rob's problems! They all participated in partying and Robbie knew that he would be well off retiring. Read the levons biography and don't base your opinions on the movie the last waltz

Robbie Robertson was supposed to be such a major part of the Band, and yet this tour was done without him, and The Band was still great! This tour used The Cate Brothers Band as a backing band. The Cates were twins Earl (lead guitar), Ernie Cate (keyboard), Ron Eoff (bass) and Terry Cagle (drums) who was Levon's nephew.

The guy who wrote almost all of their greatest songs (exactly how many Levon songs popped up on their post-Robbie records...you know, the same Robbie that “stole credits?).

Rick Danko wound up joining the Dead later on in this same show for their short third set, as did Maria Muldaur.
Garth could've really had some fun if he'd guested on the Hammond for a song or two while Brent played keys ("Estimated" > "Eyes") in the second set comes to mind. Or manned the synth rig solo for Space.
Narcolepsy has been mentioned as one of Garth's many quirks, so if he wanted to catch some shut-eye, that's also quite reasonable.
Honestly, after reading Testimony, which described some of Garth’s quirks, I have to wonder if he isn’t a high functioning Autistic. There’s no one size fits all diagnosis, but I’ve worked with Autistic children and some of the described quirks fits...along with the genius for music.
Love Levon on the harmonica and Richard covering on drums--they were as good as it gets.

I was at this show. Most Deadheads ignored the Band and other opening acts. The Looters, ok they were worth ignoring, but NOT The Band. Rock on Levon.
As a Deadhead and BandHead, DylanHead, I find that distressing. Yes, I know obsessed Deadheads but that's not the norm. Ignore the BAND? How does one DO that?
The shows I went to with both bands, I didn't see The Band being ignored.
I find that hard to believe. If true, they aren't true deadhead's.

@@luvdylanstar True! I am a Band fan first, but love The Dead. And there are similarities (including the piano chair curse!). The Band Lost Manuel to suicide, Stan Szelest to a heart attack...Richard Bell died younger of Cancer, and Billy Preston was arrested roughly 6 months after joining The Band!

How long does the average person take to make up their mind to take their own life, I’ve been struggling with this situation since about last 3+years had fairly bad motorcycle accident left in chronic pain but listen to music like this help’s it’s about The Shape I’m in and the Band I’d wish to have been in and some Rest our souls let technology keep it alive for those who will want it to happen Play on encouraging standing up giving it all your might trap in the spot lights,,

That clunky, square sound is distinctly Canadian. Canadians don't groove. We sing like we're standing in a lineup and it's 30 below and our mouths and faces are practically frozen.
Grateful Dead & The Band - What a New Years to remember. I hear Garcia was a complete party mess, hanging out with David Crosby, among others. I think the freebase, and the dragon were running amok backstage. All 4 shows of the Deads were awesome, and this set to boot on NYE. Those were the days! Thanks for the upload, and the memories.
I saw this lineup (with the Cate Brothers Band) in West Palm Beach in 1984. Levon was absent though (having some throat surgery, as Danko explained).
