This is my recording, from my Artisan Mobile remote truck behind the stage on a gorgeous winter’s day in Gainesville, FL. I haven’t seen or heard this in almost 40 years. I recorded to 24 track 2” tape and did not participate in any post production. I do know it was made into an RCA video disc so I’m assuming there was a remix. TH-cam keeps surprising me with my work from long, long ago.

Me and my buddies saw Dangerous Dan countless times with Greg solo and with ABB starting back in the early 80's in NY. Saw him in clubs on Long Island and NYC and at arenas and sheds and everywhere they played. Huge Dan Toler fans!

I'm 61 and when I watch this it almost brings tears to my eyes. I'm blessed to have live through this period. I never saw the ABB but I remember this style of concert. Lawn seats, bring your cooler, walk around and chat with complete strangers before the show. Everybody laid back and just diggin' life. I used to go to an outdoor concert venue when I was in Jr. High and High School. You could take a cooler in. We'd get there early, lay out our blankets, grab a beer and chill. We'd wander around and run into so many other people we knew. We'd stop and party with them for a while. They'd grab your a fresh beer out of their cooler and you'd move on. Just so much fun. The days we thought would never end. We truly lived in a blessed time and I'll never take it for granted.

Dickie Betts was a national treasure! His music has a natural feel to it that is so warm and heart felt. There is nothing but joy and love of music that comes from his writing and playing. We owe him a great wave of thanks for his creations and his life in music. Rest in the joy that you will be sorely missed by everyone you touched with your life and your music....
Saw him open for Hank Jr once in west Palm Beach fla. He can bend them strings, that's for sure, all of those guys were exceptional.!!

Actually it wasn't a once in a lifetime show. As they did tbis sort of thing ALLLLL the time back then. They'd have free concerts in the park in Macon or wherever it was they were playing that time. The Brothers LOVED playing and did so any chance they could, whether it be paid admission concerts or free ones at the park, etc...

I’ve heard that theory….. wrong…. 60’s and 70’s music was transformative… it changed music and society in ways good and bad. Music today is just regurgitating of last pop song … over and over.
When Gregg Allman Passed away, someone awesome put his Picture on a Billboard on Highway 41 in Acworth, Georgia. it said "REST IN PEACE MIDNIGHT RIDER". I took a few pictures of it.

Where did it go 20 years I don't know I sit wonder sometimes where it's gone. 65 now and crying memories can be reminder"s head up Fred we lived to see all of this and had a ball doing it. Thank You Lord for letting me live long enough to have the best music ever made.

I think Dickey and Dan were my two favorites in the lineup post Dwayne Era , their guitar duo's were just damn near perfection personified and they both complimented each other so well ... MAY THE ABB LIVE FOREVER , AMEN !

Agreed x2! I was born in '81 and agree wholeheartedly. Even after "hating" this music as a kid. My dad listened to them daily. And each day, I was reminded that I got my middle name the greatest guitar player to ever live, Howard Duane Allman. Back then, it meant nothing to me. I mean, it was the mid 80s. Duane & ABB weren't getting the recognition they get today. And I was a kid. I didn't understand the significance of being named after Skydog.
Today, as an adult, I couldn't be prouder to be named after Duane. I'll brag about it to anyone who will listen, TBH 😆 This may sound weird but ABB has been a huge part of my life from the day I was born. So much so that I feel like Duane is the uncle I never got to meet. I feel that sort of connection to him. You know...kinda like the grandpa that, was killed in the war that, you never met, etc... And today, I play guitar because of Duane. I own a Goldtop because of Duane & Dickey, also.
If you can't tell, I love me some Allman Brothers Band 😁❤️🎸 I know my dad is just tickled to death that I love his music now. I actually just got the album that was just released, The Final Note, for him a couple of days ago. When he opens it, I'll copy it to my pc and then to my phone to listen to in the truck. 😁 Ive done it with every other album I bought for him lately. Last one was Bear's Sonic Journals. The Grateful Dead sound guy bootlegged a show they played together and they released it as an album a couple years ago.

I saw the Dickey Betts band in Boston ..dont remember the year ...but it was at this nightclub called The Channel...the band finished ...and me and my brother were finishing up our last drink smoking a cigarette....out of this side door ...I assume a dressing room...walks Dickey Betts...he says ..Hey man...can I get a smoke of ya?...Shit ya.I light him a smoke...the three of us just standing there....Dickey says hey thanks man...walks away....My brother says to me...I thought you like Dickey Betts...You didnt say a word to him....I told him Dickey Betts is my idol...Then why didn't you say anything to him,,,,?.......I tried but I couldn't talk I was so starstruck left me speechless....true story

@@Molina939 I think you did great on your post !!! I first saw The ABB 1970. I was a you Marine at the time, home on leave from NAM, and after that concert I was hooked and still am. At the time, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They have the ability to fuse blues, country, rock, jazz and soul like nobody else !!! Duane Allman was unreal. That man put every once of his being into his masterful work. No one like him !!!

I don’t think many people realize just how much influence Jerry Garcia had on his sound. You can definitely hear that Garcia style right at the beginning.

Well I'm 70 and first saw them in '70 in Melbourne, FL. Best damn southern band ever! Duane Allman was a master slide guitarist and I was mesmerized by his guitar technique. Those were the daze my friends...✌Peace!✌👍

I was at this concert and it was incredible. There was nothing like the pure, raw energy of the sweet sound of the Allman Brothers on a beautiful, bright and sunny, cool day in January, at Florida’s major party school. Such good times.

To live, with my poetry and my songs, with Kris Kristoferson and Dylan, Joan Baez and John Prine. Country music and Coltrane and Brubeck, as jazz and the notes spiral down inward. Live it and love it forever!
Bassist is David Goldflies. His playing was really on point this gig. And, the killer tone he's getting from that Alembic is absolutely timeless!

Gainesville the best place in the world for a concert, and the best band for that show. Dicky has control of that instrument. The way he effortlessly goes from rhythm to the lead part is so smooth. He makes it look easy.

I saw Greg at the Portland Blues fest the July before he died. His voice wasn’t as strong (how could it be?) but every bit as soulful. Ain’t nobody better than the Allman Brothers.

They were all at the top of their Game here-But this truly shows Dickey’s mastery. Greg-Greatest blue eyed blues singer that walked the planet. RIP Butch/Dwayne and Greg. Toler-Smokes that Les Paul as well as the Acoustic in this set!

I was stationed at Ft Bragg from `69 -`71 and went to a concert in Fayetteville where Canned Heat was the headliner. Four other regional opening acts on the show whom I'd never heard of before, and the third act was the original Allman Bros Band. They blew everyone else away, and being a guitarist myself, they just knocked me out. I've been a big fan ever since.
Dicky....one of the most underrated virtuosos on the lead guitar of any band, any genre! Truly a guitarists’ guitarist!!

What an awesome concert and beautiful day. Another great concert at the UF Bandshell on Lake Alice with my friends. Senior year at UF and I remember it like it was yesterday. RIP Dickey Betts, my homeboy from Bradenton; you will be missed.
Its on DVD......I was at this show ..... it was a free show @ UF in Gainesville, FL....., it was a beautiful day....about 15,000 ppl. A good time was hadby all!

Betts' song writing and arranging is also way under appreciated! He's the one who comes up with these really sophisticated two guitar harmony parts, and interesting rhythmic changes and band parts. It sounds so sweet and melodic. Deceptively complicated, actually. -- Appeals to the mass audience, rockers, and jazzers alike. Just Brilliant!

His tone is unreal on this show. I had part of this concert on DVD for the longest time and I’m just appreciating it now.
i saw the Allman Brothers many times between 1991 and 2000. one that stands out is a free show at Mississippi State University. they have a natural outdoor amphitheater. Blues Traveler opened the show and John Popper jammed with the Allmans. Amazing watching Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts trying to outduel each other on guitar.
I too saw many Allman shows in the early 90's. Epic to say the least.

LOL, I talked my way into Boogie Balls (BYOB) from age 13 or 14. Not as entertaining as I heard the Halloween Ball at UF were, but Boogie Balls were crazy fun and the spilt alcohol would turn the floor polish into a slippery wet mess.
My,kids are so boring in comparison. Guess I should be grateful, but I had a damn good time back in the day. Hate they’re stuck with Reality TV talent show & TH-cam/internet “stars”, auto-tune, and few instruments. And they don’t know the thrill a shared live music experience brought to us!

grew up with these guys their music, in the late 1960´s, we were teenagers, but fel in love with this southern USA rockmusic! My younger brother (died 9 years ago) saw them in Holland / Hilversum live, I was´nt in the position to go, I still regret that, R.I P. Dicky, thank God we have still your excellent guitarplay and your music in social media and on tape!!
Im 62 and summer is just not the same without this band at festivals. Miss them so dearly .
I saw them at the Fillmore East when they recorded the live double album on two nights. Incredible!!!

I went to this concert. I was 13 years old. Man, this made an impression on me as a young person really getting into music at the time. Made a huge impression on me as a musician. This is how it's done. Incredible. Rest in peace,Dicky. You blew me away that day. Still do.

All-time great, period. Of any generation. I'm 38 and that's my opinion. But I may be biased lol. I've listened to Allman Brothers since the day I was born...and my dad named me after Duane. So yea...theres that 😁
Sooooo many times as a kid, I heard that "I was named after Duane Allman." All those years it never meant anything to me... Until this year and something finally clicked. I was raised on Allman Brothers. That's the music you heard at my house when I was a kid. So I know every song. I just didn't know they were the ones singing & playing those songs. For whatever reason, it finally all clicked. So much that I was inspired to learn to play guitar myself. It's been 2 months and I now have 2 guitars and 3 amps and I'm actually learning to play.
So yea, Duane is still inspiring people over 50 years after he came on the music scene. That's saying a lot right there. Without even considering he's one of, if not the best to ever play. IMHO, he is the best. He's #1 on my list. ❤️😎🎸 I absolutely love listening to the master practicing his craft. It's like watching a surgeon at work. 👍
@@blazer6248 I spoke with Duane Betts last summer in Milwaukee after their show--I saw them in Fla in the late 70s and many times around the midwest! Dickey Betts w/son Duane and Great Southern too!!!!! All good 3 hour shows!!

40 years ago this was amazing, today it’s superb , and 40 years from now it will be breathtaking . Oh how we long for the simpler times. We are blessed to have experienced them.

He has: he was instrumental in getting Eric Clapton to record Layla properly. The final version and recording only happened after he was invited to the studio. He is playing on the song (the original version of Clapton when still Derrick and the Dominos)

Being a Gator from 1973-88, Gainesville and UF had so many great shows - from Tom Petty and Bob Seger playing at the Ratskeller and Dubs for $1, the Outlaws and Jimmy “Jesus” Buffett, Jessie Colin Young playing free on the Ritz Union lawn, Steve Forbert and others playing on SPE lawn, Savoy Brown, Commander Coty, Climax Blues Band and Pure Prairie League playing at the Halloween Balls, Billy Joel, Waylon Jennings, Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, Grand Funk, the Doobies, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Beach Boys, Harry Chapin playing for less than $5 at the Florida Gym (known as Alligator Alley), Dylan and Rolling Thunder on Florida Field ($8.75 which was pricey at the time), Ray Charles, Ginger Baker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, Eric Burton, Spirit, Ike and Tina, B.B. King and Bromberg at the Great Southern Music Hall for less than $5, Steve Martin, Gamble Rogers, Dion, Brubeck at the Beef and Bottle, and I’m forgetting a whole lot more of great shows at that special time in life. This concert was right across the street from the dorm Hume Hall and the Shell had tremendous free shows like Karla Bonoff, Devo, Talking Heads, Warren Zevon, REM, Wendy and the Plasmatics, INXS, Charlie Daniels, the Ramones, Don Henley and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Gainesville and the University of Florida were idealistic during the 70’s and 80’s and a wonderful place to party, grow up and actually get a great education in school, life and music.

Thanks for your reply. Gainesville and UF were so idyllic - it was a great place to learn and grow up into adulthood. I wrote a some words about those years in Hogtown called Neverland - it's about that moment in time - although the years have slipped by, those times are still precious even if though only memories now.
I used to live out on Lake Santa Fe during graduate school, not to far from Keystone Lake, Buddy's Landing, Blue Water Bay and Chiapini's Gas Station which was across the street with the $0.25 beers - such a great area. When you create that time machine, save an extra seat for me! All the best and stay safe.

Nole here, but saw Zappa at alligator alley and Weather Report at Lake Alice field. Was always jelly how hogtown got so many concerts and Tally did not. We had our share but not the name acts like UF. 1978-1984 ish

That Zappa show was great - I believe that was April 1980 in the old Florida gym, aka Alligator Alley. Such a tremendous guitarist and Frank was on fire that night - started with Chungas Revenge, ended with the Tony Allen cover Night Owl with twenty other songs in-between - from the Mothers (A Pound for Brown on the Bus, You Didn’t Try to Call Me, I Ain’t Got Bo Heart) to Joe’s Garage. During those years, you guys were kicking our tails on the gridiron but Hogtown was the rock n roll champs. Music like you mentioned transcend rivalries, even if only for a couple of hours.

Dicky Betts!!!! the one and only!!! That was a free concert! they would come to Gainesville occasionally and free concerts. Rumor had it that Greg (while living in Sarasota, FL) had a few too many DUIs so his Community Service was giving free concerts in the state. Hence...this one. It was a fun day!!!

(Hey, she looked 18! lol) A few years later, as a student at UF, we used to listen to Tom Petty play for free on campus. He was in a band called Mudcrutch, as I recall and hosted some very fun parties...

Hey, I remember Mudcrutch at the Plaza of the Americas on the UF campus, Halloween night, 1971. It was called the "Freaker's Ball". A lot of crazy costumes, etc. Gave a whole new meaning to higher education!

I saw them and met with them and the Greek Theater a Los Angeles several years ago and the guys took me in it was great man there is nothing like that comradery post post Skynyrd days these are the guys that took it over some of some of the best music you'll ever hear.....!
Hey y'all don't forget Pat Ramsey my old next door neighbor and Crosscut Saw. There was not a better Southern band besides them and the Allman Brothers who played in Tallahassee in the 1980s. Period!!!!

Damn that Dickie Betts knows how to make a guitar sing with that front pickup. His smooth left hand using all 4 fingers is unmatched except maybe by the great Nokie Edwards, Dickie's little left finger is amazing..
Notice he played 'Jessica' with two fingers though - a Reinhardt tribute.
He is an amazing guitarist. I first saw him do that volume swell trick in Tuscaloosa where they were touring in support of Brothers and Sisters, we were all so thoroughly blown away by that technique. Many of us tried to copy it to no avail

He learned from Duane and got better as the years went by. They knew he was not very good
he just played the same rifs over and over that's why they got rid of him. I learned from the
band and loved them back in my day, and became very good.
