I was a child when I discovered Melanie. In the south of France where I grew up. One radio station used to play her songs. I couldn’t understand English in those days, but I fell in love with her voice. I am now 66 years old , and still listening to her beautiful songs in India at Raza Organic Farm . I am so sorry she left us, but her songs will live on. God willing peace will come. Sat Sri Akal, Salam, Shalom, Shanti.

More than even voice, which is beautiful, the Energy Melanie exudes reflects as close to Perfection of Spirit as possible. It continues through this century (see her Backyard Performances with Miley Cyrus). I thank Melanie for giving me hope and consolation through the turbulent Sixties and Seventies through the present. So fortunate to have been born during her lifetime.

Amazing what Melanie can do with a simple 3 chord song.
I grew up listening to her and she was very inspirational to me. Gave me a sense that I wanted to bring people together in harmony as she was trying to do.
There is always an endless amount of speculation about the lyrics of this song, but it is amazing that no one has ever wondered what the true meaning of this mysterious song is. If I were Melanie I wouldn't give any explanation after so much time. Keep it a secret, girl!

Two months and three days later on August 16th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #55; four weeks later on September 13th, 1970 it would peak at #32 {for 2 weeks} and it stayed on the chart for 7 weeks...
Between 1970 and 1973 she had nine Top 100 records; two made the Top 10, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" {#6 for 1 week in 1970} and "Brand New Key" {#1 for 3 weeks in 1971}...
Melanie, born Melanie Anne Safka, celebrated her 68th birthday four months ago on February 3rd {2015}...
Yes.. 1970, returned from Viet Nam and I recall this song playing on the radio and it stopped me in my tracks. I felt Melanie wrote this for me. I cry today when I listen to it... mostly for my brothers that never came home with me.

As I am not English native, I always struggle to figure out what she means by ”please buy one” and “according to man”
"Please buy one”. My own take on this is that the song is about a campaigner for nuclear disarmament (popular in the 70s) who is selling lapel badges with the CND logo.
“According to man - According to plan”. Man vs Nature perhaps? Or it could mean whatever you want it to mean.
@@timtimson313 Yes, i thought it could be a leaflet the character is selling, but i like the lapel badge idea better. Or it could mean: 'just buy into the belief that peace will come (if enough people buy into it).'
'According to Man' perhaps acknowledges that we don't really understand God's plan because we don't really understand what God is. I prefer the Buddhist interpretation that we are all part of the God-Consciousness. The song, especially the second verse, comes across to me as a plea for remaining true to the greater Consciousness, tuning into one's role as part of it in the face of peer pressures to conform to the conventional wisdom of the lost souls that inhabit our materialistic world. Peace can come spiritually to an individual even in the face of adversity in the wider world of Man; mankind is merely a small part of the greater whole. For me, Melanie encapsulates the ethos of the hippie search for Truth. 0:05
