  • From the November 4, 1970 episode of the Johnny Cash Show. It's a terrific song and a stellar performance, but the audio is A.F.U. If anybody has the technical acumen to take the background buzz off the original file, drop me a line.

Me too. She deserves much more recognition. Great singer and a better song writer.

Melanie WAS big back in her day. She played Woodstock. Brand New Key went to # 1 for three weeks. She was the first female singer to have three top 40 hits concurrently. She was voted Billboard's #1 top female vocalist in 1972. Her albums went gold. She took a break at the peak of her career and I don't think it was an accident. I don't think she wanted to become too big.

@muskratrowdy I agree with you on that one.Melanie Safka definitely wanted the public to hear and enjoy her music, but obviously not at the expense of her essence as both an artist and human being.

I completely agree. In 1970 she had Lay Down (Candle in the Rain) which peaked at #6, and this song which peaked at #32, and she was a gigantic voice for peace and love. And yet she is never never EVER played on the oldies stations. Maybe it's because they are owned by the superwealthy who don't want any songs that could possibly wake people up. For instance, they never play Eve of Destruction, Dylan's anti war music, or Joan Baez's anti war music.

I always wondered why she was not more famous. I hope it's true that it was by her own choice. She is truly remarkable, a one-of-a-kind performer.

she's amazing, wonder why we didn't give her the kudos she deserved back in her day? maybe she was ahead of her time. the only songs I really remembered from then as being great were 'Lay Down', and 'Brand new roller skates' course, I was like 10 y.o.

She looks better with hair I think but less powerful...abviously. She shares a split in the lower lip with Sinead O'Connor.

She got kudos then. The problem, imho, is that she isn't getting kudos now. Her songs are played in movies and TV shows and commercials. They've been recorded by everyone from Ray Charles to the Hilltop Hoods. But, I think the industry still sees her as this flower child hippie chick, and it's hurt her.
An induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would be nice, but they haven't inducted Joan Baez .... yet. What's the chance of Melanie being inducted when Joan Baez hasn't been? Not likely.
