One of the best parts of these Johnny Carson performances is when she’s singing, you could hear a pin drop. Considering his core demographic, which was middle-age to older watchers, that’s really saying something. It’s quite possible that a great many in his studio audience had never heard of her, but she has their full attention.
Yes...What a performance, she really left it all out there for this evening...And NBCs sound engineers did a fantastic job, even the slight echo towards the end- She is simply a wonder....In 71' and 72' when there was a lot going on in my world, Melanie was a constant soundtrack ...She touched my heart then, and still today...
Good observation. She has the talent to pull you in, not many performers do. She was exceptional. Possibly the most underrated performer from this era.
huge fan since 1967...Melanie was my very favorite! loved Joni M, Joan B, Carole K, Carley S, etc but Melanie was something special and she never got the attention she deserved...brand new key was her worse & her most known song, which does not do her justice, she had a unique voice/lyrics/guitar style...and the cell phones swaying at the concerts all started back w/ Melanie and candles, then bic lighters...
Do you believe in peace, love, and justice? Do you believe in equality, fairness, and empathy? Do you believe in kindness, magic, and heart? Do you believe in beautiful people? If so, then raise your candle high against the black sky...and let the white birds sing. And lets be together...keeping dry against the rain. Love you, Melanie.
Here's another thing I miss about the old days: the sound of applause--not catcalls, not whistles, not "wooh!'--just ordinary applause. After this lovely, one hears applause that seems to honor her in a reverential way. I miss that. Am I the only one?
There were 18 minutes of time, 2 songs and an interview, devoted to Melanie on this nation wide TV show. That was amazing for one performer and a simple guitar. She was spellbinding and Its obvious Jonny was Smittin.
I have to say this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, when she sings high at the end I have to hold back the tears. This video really takes me back to that time, and Melanie just embodies all the hopes and dreams we had. Knowing now that she wrote this for her husband just makes it all the more sweet.
Love this lady!!!! I got to see her one time in concert...1974...Valley Forge Music Faire, Pennsylvania! That was a March evening that I shall carry in my soul forever!
I do believe your eyes, too.... I have always loved Melanie's lovable, beautiful, personal manner with which she reaches and touches her audience! She's unique that way.
Serious sAm sure they’re “good” but you’ll never find musicians like David Bowie or Melanie again. All people want nowadays are winey auto-tuned people singing about broken hearts.
Melanie, the singer who performed at Woodstock in 1969 and had major pop hits with “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” in the early ’70s, died Tuesday at age 76. News of the death came from her publicity firm, Glass Onyon PR.
Wow....near the end of the song ...when she goes into that angelic falsetto ...I got chills down my spine. Yeah ...they don't make singers like this anymore. Very rare. Eva Cassidy comes to mind ....Sandy Denny......singing from the soul ...or heart....or truth ....I believe your eyes...
I do believe that on this planet lives a soulless person, namely the one who gave the thumb down on this lovely, amazingly passionate and truly beautiful song. Hard to believe, tough.
I think she's the most underrated singer of the late 1960s-1970s. I put her right up there just below Dylan, Lightfoot, Paul Simon ... but she was amazing.
I'd forgotten just how very special these recordings are, 'cause it's been a few years since I last saw them and they've kind of slipped under the radar since then. But oh man.... I think others have already said enough to express just how precious these historic videos are.
I loved Melanie ever since I was a youngster, I think she is a very beautiful girl with a beautiful voice, she is so pretty in this video. This song makes me emotional.
If I were 15-20 years older, I could have easily fallen in love with this lady! Ah, heck, I love her as it is. This so reminds me of the time my college sweetheart and I said goodbye for the last time. So much truth in this song ... it takes me back 34 years.Ouch.
melanie has to be my favorite female singer. i love her voice. back in 1974, i had tickets to see melanie. i was pumped. the day of the concert, there were 200 tickets left unsold. big venue. -well, that afternoon her husband/manager cancelled the concert. he didn't want billboard to know she didn't have a sell out crowd!!
Belief and hope is all really ever had, we must never loose either one because it's the only real thing that ever will exist, Melanie knew and still knows this and was not afraid to express it in one most uncertain times the world has seen. Her belief lives on today in the minds of those who really understand the meaning of her words. One brave and sincere young lady.
BEAUTIFUL!! By chance I was part of the crowd that walked down Route 17 on a Friday night and through the open gates to the Woodstock Concert. Melanie's voice has been in my brain all these years! Thanks for this posting!! And Paulo Pinheiro thank you for your comment.
In 71, I think, Melanie was shell shocked by the mega success of 'Brand New Key' and set out with this album to reaffirm her stature as a deep important ,potent singer-songwriter. This is simply sublime.
just recently heard her do a fantastic version of "I guess thats why they call it the blues" Might be a few years old now. But ain't it great when you come across a real gem?
Truly, one of Melanie's most beautiful public performances! I have always been attracted to many spiritual undertones in her music. This song is truly human with a deep spiritual encounter with the one to whom she sings. Sometimes when I listen to this song, I feel like it's a prayer to God.
Do you believe it's morning I'm alive but that's the last thing on my mind If our nighttime words mean good-bye Let our morning words be kind Didn't your eyes say you'd never change your mind Didn't my eyes say I do believe your eyes I do believe them, I do believe your eyes I lose vision once in awhile We all got grounded at the start But I still believe in magic It comes from seeing with the heart I do believe it, I do believe my eyes I do believe it, the magic's in our eyes I went to bed at sunrise Now I'll sleep the whole day through My eyes will open to the darkness And in the darkness will be you And in the darkness my only light is you And in the darkness the light is in your eyes I do believe, I do believe your eyes I do, the light is in your eyes Repeat Do you, do you believe my eyes I do believe Do you, do you believe my eyes I do I do believe your eyes I do believe, I do believe your eyes Repeat
Love her then and I love her even more as a baby boomer on their bonus round! Always wanted to play the acoustic guitar -- I do believe my sister ended up with mine around the 8th grade I think I was too busy to learn but I sing and Melanie was probably my first love (12 years old). The first album I bought were hers I believe. Melanie brings me back to my youth!
i love how my sister was named after her , but hate how she never knew before she died. what a beautiful singer and voice no wonder my father chose this name.
She did two Phil Ochs covers, wish she would have done his "Changes".I think that would song would have suited her, and she would have done justice to it.This has got to be one of my favorite live performances by anyone ever. The vocals are so passionate and expressive, along with her playing. The song has a quality to it that moves you with its intensity.
It's a very easy song to play. That's one of the things I love about Melanie. Her music can sometimes sound complicated, but they really are easily played.
This one and the first song from Melanie on that Tonight Show in '72 - 'Together Alone' (so clearly written for Peter, don't you think?) followed by that priceless conversation between 25-year old Melanie and Johnny Carson, which illustrate so beautifully this particular stage of her development, both personally and artistically, are simply pure gold. THANKS PATTIE!

She's such a sweet and captivating soul.
Powerful songs and honest performance!
Good observation. She has the talent to pull you in, not many performers do. She was exceptional. Possibly the most underrated performer from this era.
I've looked for her first appearance with Carson, but haven't found it yet. 1963. That would be something. She is fantastic.
The passing of Melanie Safka was announced today - thank you Melanie, your unique voice and talent will shine for many, many years.......

Her voice & guitar, that was ALL that Melanie needed to captivate her audience

She was the most underrated singer/songwriter/performer of the late 1960s-1970s,
Do you believe in peace, love, and justice? Do you believe in equality, fairness, and empathy? Do you believe in kindness, magic, and heart? Do you believe in beautiful people? RIP dear Melanie. We've lost you this week but you have left us such beautiful music.
Everything about this is perfect
She is mesmerising
I had forgotten how much I love this song. She was fantastic! Johnny couldn’t say one word? He was clearly moved. 🙁
A beautiful talented soul R.I.P
Here's another thing I miss about the old days: the sound of applause--not catcalls, not whistles, not "wooh!'--just ordinary applause. After this lovely, one hears applause that seems to honor her in a reverential way. I miss that. Am I the only one?
they were likely stunned to the core by her performance i'm thinking.
Not at all, Xavier. I miss it also ❤️❤️
Xavier Garcia people in audiences will cheer for any dumb or small shit I wanna go back to when I was a teen

I miss it too
Her vocals are absolutely incredible.
There were 18 minutes of time, 2 songs and an interview, devoted to Melanie on this nation wide TV show. That was amazing for one performer and a simple guitar. She was spellbinding and Its obvious Jonny was Smittin.
I doubted my dads music taste. but I completely get it now :)
Oh to go back to these times in the early seventies... Never again - Thanks for sharing!

I have always loved Melanie's lovable, beautiful, personal manner with which she reaches and touches her audience! She's unique that way.
They don't make artists like this any more.
True that!
scoobydo191 not? good artists everywhere you look.
Serious sAm sure they’re “good” but you’ll never find musicians like David Bowie or Melanie again. All people want nowadays are winey auto-tuned people singing about broken hearts.
I've been a fan of Melanie since the 70s. Love her beautiful voice.

Eternal flower-child! Unique and so amazing Melanie! Bless you!
I almost go into a trance when I watch her, that voice, that face.....Love her so much.
It's a great feeling isn't it,Melanie is amazing!
Lord, I believe those eyes! She’s beautiful!
what an amazing song and delivery. No one else has the ability to put such deep feelings through her voice as Melanie.
a true troubadour ... timeless. It amazes me how she creates rhythm and 'chorus' without a band.

She was exquisite.
What a unique voice!
Damn...I dig me some Melanie...She comes off sincere...I'm into it....
Thank you for sending us this angel Melanie, a great gift .....
The 3 people who disliked her listen to Justin Bieber and think he is the best singer on the planet.
Mickey Singh I have no doubt that you are absolutely right and that scares the shit out of me...
i dont know how i found her, but this is amazing
She's truly amazing. I've known her for many years. She's just as wonderful as she is on stage :)
I wish, somehow, that I knew her as a friend. She is so beautiful, talented and purely honest. As a solo artist, she is an angel of music.
I do believe that on this planet lives a soulless person, namely the one who gave the thumb down on this lovely, amazingly passionate and truly beautiful song. Hard to believe, tough.
I totally agree. I guess you can't win 'em all....
That was my thought exactly. I've wondered a long time who these people are who clicks thumbs down on on the most beautiful songs. Trolls do exists!
there is one in every crowd!! she is the real thing!!!!!!
The most gorgeous and talented woman in my lifetime, loved her from day one when I heard her then I saw her and wow!
I think she's the most underrated singer of the late 1960s-1970s. I put her right up there just below Dylan, Lightfoot, Paul Simon ... but she was amazing.
Powerful--Clear--Hypnotic!!! One Helluva artist & Performer!!!
I'd forgotten just how very special these recordings are, 'cause it's been a few years since I last saw them and they've kind of slipped under the radar since then. But oh man.... I think others have already said enough to express just how precious these historic videos are.

What a song! Devastating. What a performance! Ah, MELANIE MELANIE
Lay Down, Lay Down, Lay It All Down, Rest Easy Beautiful Song Girl
I have loved Melanie the day I first heard her in 1984!
If I were 15-20 years older, I could have easily fallen in love with this lady! Ah, heck, I love her as it is. This so reminds me of the time my college sweetheart and I said goodbye for the last time. So much truth in this song ... it takes me back 34 years.Ouch.

She still is! 😊
She still is.
Excellent! Another superb artist of whom I had lost track. Serendipity STRIKES Again!
Her music is a masterful joining of the poet and musician. I don't think it's too hard to see it in all of her music.
Just Melanie and her guitar.
what Melanie did with her voice in this performance was beyond magical, perfection at the best!
I am amazed and blown away by her vocals. She puts so many of today's artists to shame with her voice and guitar. Wow.
And now, 50 years later…
Belief and hope is all really ever had, we must never loose either one because it's the only real thing that ever will exist, Melanie knew and still knows this and was not afraid to express it in one most uncertain times the world has seen.

It sure is!
this song is so beautiful
The most wonderful voice I've heard in my entire life. Note: I was born the exact same day as Melanie (Feb. 3, 1947)
She was very beautiful
Auden Abdelkader She still is! Melanie is still very much alive.
Auden Abdelkader She still is 🥰
I accidentally got her confused with Laura Nyro also a great Folk singer
I like to discover new music , new to me anyway. cause I was just a kid in the 70s.
Truly, one of Melanie's most beautiful public performances! I have always been attracted to many spiritual undertones in her music. This song is truly human with a deep spiritual encounter with the one to whom she sings. Sometimes when I listen to this song, I feel like it's a prayer to God.
I agree. I'm just glad we live in an age where things like this have been preserved. Try finding video of a Mozart concert!!
Do you believe it's morning
I'm alive but that's the last thing on my mind
If our nighttime words mean good-bye
Let our morning words be kind
Didn't your eyes say you'd never change your mind
Didn't my eyes say I do believe your eyes
I do believe them, I do believe your eyes
I lose vision once in awhile
We all got grounded at the start
But I still believe in magic
It comes from seeing with the heart
I do believe it, I do believe my eyes
I do believe it, the magic's in our eyes
I went to bed at sunrise
Now I'll sleep the whole day through
My eyes will open to the darkness
And in the darkness will be you
And in the darkness my only light is you
And in the darkness the light is in your eyes
I do believe, I do believe your eyes
I do, the light is in your eyes
Repeat
Do you, do you believe my eyes
I do believe
Do you, do you believe my eyes
I do
I do believe your eyes
I do believe, I do believe your eyes
Repeat

It's a very easy song to play. That's one of the things I love about Melanie. Her music can sometimes sound complicated, but they really are easily played.
