Melanie and her music are still very special to us both after all these years. I remember hearing her for the first time on late night commercial radio that played underground stuff. I went and bought 'Born to Be' and that was the start of a life long love affair. Saw her live at the Isle of Wight and she was singing as the sun came up on that Sunday morning. That moment is very precious and I think it was the most magical experience I've ever had.

I had the great pleasure and privilege of spending a few moments with Melanie in the geodesic dome at Glastonbury Fair in 1971. She was even more beautiful than her voice. As you might imagine, this was an amazing encounter for a hippy boy from London. God bless you, Melanie, and thank you for all your time-hallowed songs, from a fellow Aquarian peace traveller.

Loved this song back in the day. Melanie had such a wonderful raspy voice, and still does. I fell in love with her, with Brand New Key. From that day forward i was hooked on her music. She was a love guru back in the hippie days. Great memories.
Melanie Safka was way ahead of her age --- bringing her guitar to 8th grade and serenading the class. We didn't know what a hippie was, but she sure was different. Beautiful voice!
Melanie made her first public appearance at age of 4 on the radio show "Live Like A Millionaire," singing "Gimme a Little Kiss". That was in 1951. Her mother was an Italian jazz singer mother, Pauline "Polly" Altomare Safka-Bertolo.
I remember her, when she came alone on stage, in the wee wee hours of the last day at the Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 with the sun rising, shinning on her face and singing Beautiful People. I never forget this magic moment.
This song has a lot of powerful memories for many people. Mine is just when my wife and I lost our house. The removal man was playing this when we had to pack our stuff and leave. 2 months later we got in our feet and moved in to a home that we call our own now.

My mom loved this song when I would sing it in french...she was so proud that I was learning french in high school. She also could relate to the words in english, as they are true to life.
I woke up with this song going round in my head, but due to an illness, I have a very bad memory. To help my memory and motor actions I took up playing a ukulele, and I thought this song would be great for me to learn. It took me a while to find the right site, to find the chords, and I'll never be able to give it the full Melanie treatment, but I'm definately gonna try!

I met Melanie after her concert in Passaic NJ. My buddy Jerry Sasso opened a restaurant-hang-out in the vicinity and there she was joining us as if she was part of our little world. The music brings back a lot of memories.
Childhood memories of hippy teachers who'd all just returned from the hippy trail to India, playing the guitar and singing in class with another brewing every variety of tea imaginable after returning from visiting Sai Baba's ashram and instructing us in meditation. The school play even used Pink Floyd albums as backing tracks. (To this day I wonder if someone sat there next to the volume switch to edit out the swearing !) Melanie sums up that entire period for me.
This gal was so hip back in her day! Her vocals were sublime, she was totally gorgeous looking, she was highly intelligent, and here's the best bit - she never ever took herself too seriously. That's why today's gals just so can't match her.
Really, that's a stupid comment. Why today's gals just can't match her? What is the point of that comment? And who says Melanie didn't take herself seriously? Of course she did. She was a serious musician. You think you're complimenting her, but it's really an insult. Here's a clue: women musicians, including today's, take their work seriously.

J Korta, Yeah... that's it. That's what it was about. 😉 On at least one youtube video of Brand New Key, there actually are comments by people claiming that it couldn't possibly be a double entendre.

Too many great female singers to list, but Judith Durham was first amongst equals.
A beautiful song indeed, from an era rich in musical creativity, a renaissance of great lyrics and melody lacking today. Thank God for the oldies…they still captivate us.
I had forgotten about this song. I was 16 and just started dating when her song 'brand new key' came out. and i used to go skating all the time.
Brand new key was about . . . ummm . . . the key fitting in the skate . . .
J Korta,
Yeah... that's it. That's what it was about. 😉
On at least one youtube video of Brand New Key, there actually are comments by people claiming that it couldn't possibly be a double entendre.
As a music assignment in the 9th grade, I & 4 other of my friends sang "Brand New Key". Everyone loved it.

I did not recall that part of the lyrics were , " Look what they've done to my brain Ma ." 21 Pilots does a Cover of a song with Lyrics which state , "Don't look back in anger , at least not today ."

Brad Stephan sie kam neulich. Fernsehen. Ihr Sohn hat sie begleitet. Der schaute sie dauernd ganz freundlich und sympathisch an. Ist wohl eine nette Mutter geworden.
This came out in 1970. I was only 4. One of my earliest & happiest pop song memories.
