He mentions the author Byung Chul Han and his book “The Burnout Society”, but apparently he hasn’t read it. The book speaks about the excess of positivity, our problem with dealing with the “otherness” and its consequences. And it is with this same superficial positivity that this gentleman speaks, sounding like yet another self help book. If you’re looking for the subject “burnout society”, I recommend you go directly to the source: the German-Korean philosopher.

What u say is correct. But may be for the people who really haven't studied psychology, he explained in a laymen language.

@@RupaliRawat i encourage you to see a few of the videos on Byung-Chul Han - there are many. Han puts forward a very clearly argued case for the sky rocketing prevalence of burnout, depression and other syndromes such as BPD and ADHD as being the inevitable result of late capitalism where we are constantly exhorted to think positive and exploit ourselves. ie you are free to enslave yourself to work. Constantly optimising, updating, utilising techniques like mindfulness, seeing exercise and self care as mere ways of making ourselves more productive means that the human part of us rebels and rejects it. This internalised conflict, which can be seen as a kind of internalised class conflict results most clearly in depression.

This talk gave obvious answers... I would suggest the following:
    1. Burnout happens when chronic work-related stressors make us feel depleted. The root cause of this feeling is generally comparison to others.
    2. To avoid burnout, back-solve what you want by retirement. If you want work-life-balance and 500k at retirement, find a job that will allow you to invest 1k/month for twenty years.
    3. Once you know your end-goal, you can have clarity regarding your needs and pick a career that will accommodate both your mental/physical needs and your financial needs.
    4. Now cope with stressors knowing your plan is adequate and meets your needs. Address the root-cause of your feelings of inadequacy.

Many things that I am grateful for today, were achieved by working to the brink of burnout in the past. It's easy to preach others to seek happiness when you are born with privilege. Some people are not that privileged and have to work extra hard to reach to a point where others already are.

Burnout is a "bad word" to a lot of leaders. It's sad that people feel unable to even talk about it sometimes. It ends up perpetuating the problem.
Burnout isn't doing too much. It's doing too much of the wrong things.

psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theory and philosophers like Han would suggest that we do NOT consciously know what makes us happy. he absolutely rejects this sort of anodyne positivity. in fact, he says it is the very reason for burnout. he makes an original and interesting case for it as well. which you never see with self help.

I agree with the gratitude, but also life doesnt always have to go upwards, i have a job noe that pays me better but i was happier with the former one. Sometimes having no goal and realizing the present is just good enough is relaxing as well

My most important ritual is a deep all consuming warm loving hug to those I care about, as often as I can.
