  • 30th April 2023 | Ludhiana’s Giaspura, Punjab. 11 people dropped dead in just 15 mins! Authorities suspect that gas leaked from open sewers after high levels of toxic gas was detected in this area, surrounded by industries. But when Down To Earth’s team reached Ludhiana, we realized this incident was just a wake-up call. The real issue is much bigger and affects communities at large
So, there are 2 theories of what must have happened. One is that the industries could have dumped some chemicals into the domestic sewer line that then mixed with H2S to form a toxic gas. The other theory is that the sewers were not cleaned or not cleaned properly. But the problem that we see is not restricted to Giaspura alone. This is related to how the city manages its water, waste and industrial pollution.
Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.

once the city was famous for its Punjab Agricultural University n its role in Green Revolution, hosiery, largest bicycles hub....
Now industrialists from another states n its own are making it most dangerous city in world...
Ludhiana Municipal corporation is worst... corruption n Greed of making money without consideration of people's lives seems no stoppage...

Thankful for this expansion of educational magazine/journalism in the wake of paralysed mainstream media.
It is probably the future.. media reporting by subject experts related to the topics of their expertise.
I think many more such organisations can and should slowly expand into regular & active journalism in their own domains.. and hopefully isolate these useless sold out prime time presenters.
This model will give opportunities to serious journalists and viewers to relate education & news together.. create pressure on governments for development.

It's a shame that industries cannot get their act together and work within the environmental.norms; the price we all pay is huge in the short term with the loss of innocent lives and in the long term.with cancers and such like diseases. When will people learn to put people and the planet before profits , how many lives must be lost for this ?

Multiple factors: Industries paying PPCB officials to give clearance, paying the government to safeguard from policies, non-expert bureaucrats either doing political bidding or restricted by threats, no media coverage, lack of widespread people's movement for accountability

Wish Indian public demands 1 child policy because at the root of it all is the shear volume of consumption aka consumer volume.
Of course there are other factors that should be dealt asap as well but reducing consumption is by far the most effective.

Democracy isn't just about voting your favourite religious party to power, it's about active boots on the ground participation, everyday. India doesn't need bullet trains, ugly giant statues. She needs proper sewerage treatment, roads(built scientifically, with proper camber, rainwater harvesting drains), citizens oversight committees, fierce protection of natural and social capital...water above all else. Kudos to the DTE team, excellent exposé. Respect and thanks from Goa

Your context on democracy and accusation on India's infrastructure growth seems very politically driven. And yes, many issues are in need of address but remember policy implementation lies in the hand of bureaucracy. So, rather than complaining what India needs to do what not, what it needs or not, what Indias governance should be, I might suggest you to prepare for civil service maybe. Since such a sincere citizen as you are, be of some value for the Indian society rather than mocking over the Internet everywhere, misdirecting people.

      😂😂😂
Democracy is all about voting that political party which is giving free electricity, free water and not giving a shit about proper sanitation.Think logically and then react , it's not about democracy or politics it's about providing people all their basic necessities which are necessary for survival.
