  • This is the story of the Sanghams of Zaheerabad, Telangana who have been working to preserve grain and millet biodiversity for more than thirty years now. With the help of the Deccan Development Society, an organisation working to uplift triply marginalised Dalit women they are also proud climate warriors now. They have fought against all odds to reduce gender discrimination in their society, caste hierarchies and also the domination of monoculture. In the arid regions of Telangana which has always received scarce rainfall, millets survive well. They are hardy and resilient to changes in climate patterns today. Moreover, since they also save seeds it protects them from low quality seeds of the market and fluctuations that take place in prices. While the money these women make might not be as much as cash crops like sugarcane or wheat, they have managed to end hunger and ensure food security for themselves.

    I am from Chhattisgarh.
    Here, due to state as well as central govt sponsored programmes, millets are the new trend for us.
    I live in one of the cities of Chhattisgarh, here nowadays nobody talks about oats or whatever diet conscious people would prefer eating.
    Almost everybody atleast people of my circle are switching to more indigenous n more nutritious options of the FMCG hyped products like ragi cookies, kodo upma, ragi malt, etc.
    I wont say that this is all because of govt sponsored scheme alone, but yes, the awareness n channeled system they provided for these grains to come out to mass, in more organised and more processed way is definitely an advantage for the millet farmers.

      Actually, these women run horizontal information dissemination mechanisms. Knowledge is passed on from mothers-in-law to daughters-in-law. So it will go on for decades. Another video on that soon!

    why did you mention dalit women

  • @Padmakshig
    @Padmakshig ปีที่แล้ว +17

    a request to not use 'dalit' word as it appears to be derogatory. In sanatan dharm, dalit word does not exist you can instead use 'hindu' word if you have to specify religion or cast or you can write her name as well directly. Im your loyal follower from past 1 year and this i didnt expect from you guys as you are arent mainstream media. Kindly take note of this in future.

    • @hedhi2610
      @hedhi2610 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kau_shal.18 Why so ? Is it necessary? Aren't they enough as human beings? We like to divide ourselves and so others are taking advantage of such division. The word harijan or dalit doesn't matter as both words are meant to divide and point at that lower caste.

      Very true. ......but hardly given any importance or recognition. This is true measure of our mindset. Some people are believed to do the hard work without any honour or appreciation.
