      hahaha lmao. As a Kiwi I have to totally agree with him. Going past NZ is the transition into the Pacific. Besides we always give our Aussy cousin a hard time, BTW he isn't afraid of them. Quite funny how you made a drama of his comments, so wokish of you @Florian. He would refuse to be cancelled lmao.

    Most Australian, particularly those like me that live on the east coast (Melbourne for me), agree with Conrad that Cape Leeuwin is the “runt” of the capes. Only West Australian think that Cape Leeuwin is a thing. Most Australian don’t care what West Australians think 😉

    Many international viewers may not understand the huge rivalry that goes on between NZ and Aus (all in good fun), and I suspect Conrad is having a good laugh at this moment in the Southern Ocean. Florian has picked up on this and adding to the fun. Florian would go down well in NZ!

  • @martinblyth52
    @martinblyth52 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

    To a great extent he's correct. At least in terms of the Vendee Globe. I'll bet until Vendee Globe 99% of the population outside Western Australia had never heard of Cape Leeuwin (except maybe a few older sailors who knew its historical significance). And there are thousands of references through to the present day of the relief or trepidation or excitement relating to sailors rounding Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn but I don't recall any significant references to 'that great day we rounded Cape Leeuwin'. Yes sure you kind of pass by it (but miles away so no chance any Vendee Globe sailor would ever actually see it) and historically it was referred to as the dividing line between Indian and Southern oceans (but no longer) but you also pass by (and much closer on the Vendee)Tasmania and Stewart Island and they get little or no mention. So as Conrad says it's really not that significant these days - at least not with regard to VG- except as another signpost along the way which ironically would not be seen by any of the skippers!! Cheers

  • @KevinWilliams-mc4qx
    @KevinWilliams-mc4qx 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

    I suggest that Cape Leeuwin be shifted to the bottom of NZ. After all we are geographically lower than Aus and therefore far more significant to sailers😊

    As a Canadian, watching, I just want to add I am deeply offended by the suggestion that Cape Leeuwin is not just as important as Cape Horn or the Cape of Good Hope. This, after all, would call into question the importance of Cape Breton, Cape Scott, Cape Race, and all the other great Canadian capes! Some, like Coleman, would claim these were “lesser” capes, or “minor” capes, which is clearly a great disservice to me, as a Canadian. Respect for all the capes and not just the privileged elites!

    I don’t understand why what he said is offensive. He is correct they are not rounding Cape Leeuwin as they do the other capes. It’s just a point away from the race. If they were sailing around the western point of Australia, then it will be a major way point. I don’t see the problem.

    Conrad said he was taking the mickey out of the Aussies. This happens all the time- the Aussies will laugh and be looking for a chance to "get one back" Also Conrad is right- this particular cape is a transition or turning point circumnavigating Australia but not circumnavigating the world. I'm amazed you're treating the whole thing so seriously.

    The Great sailors of the Dutch East India company (VOC) used this cape as a turning point for them to head north to the spice Islands. They discovered the “roaring forties” and sailed in these latitudes with no real way of figuring longitude. They had to guess and many came to grief. Miss cape Leeuwin and you had to beat back into strong westerly winds the cape was very important to world trade for hundreds of years eventually being named by Matthew flinders well after the VOC had ceased to exist. It is as significant as all the other great “turning points”.

    You don’t have to have a storm system in the sky or clouds when you are around a landmass the size of Australia. It creates a lot of heat which sends gust your way.

    South West cape off Tasmania is our most southern cape and the entrance to the pacific. So I see this as the cape that should definitely hold priority over cape Leewin

    I'm an Aussie, have been to Cape Leeuwin, and agree with Conrad. I don't know who decided to include it in the Great Capes category. BTW Matthew Flinders, not an Italian, named Cape Leeuwin after the Dutch ship Leeuwin.

    ...also the "outriggers" replace the traditional "spreaders". Question: Being much lower & much longer do they allow less compression on the mast ??? Thanks for your mental lights 🤓🤓🤓

    Cheers to you and thanks for your ⛵️ reports Florian ❤
    Can I ask you to keep the mouse more calm while reporting? It's a little confusing when you jump back and forth so fast 👀
    ...thanks a bundle, dear 😘

    Conrad had us laughing. It is just his opinion..not a controversy.

    In essence Conrad is quite right. The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn are visible and require a rounding whereas Cape Leeuwin is miles away unseen. Tasmania is closer to the fleet. These are more points of longitude to tick off in passing.
