You're never too old. Get out there. I'm 68 and have recently taken some sailing courses and I'm hooked. My grandfathers and my father were sailers so I guess it's in my blood. My son who's 35 said to me recently " I don't know why dad, but I like boats". Said to him, it's in your blood. I love the sea and can only live on the coast.
Don't quit sailing. I'm seventy six just bought another blue water boat. I'm getting ready to head out again. Even if you can't run a big boat , get something to sail. Don't quit something you love. Best wishes.
Agree! With the comments. Unless there’s some physical disability, you should get out there. Tom Tursi is 98 years old with Maryland School Of SAILING & Seamanship . I did two passages with his company.
Don't be fooled. You have the best channel on TH-cam. I love your details About Sailing. I'm a Seaman but I never Been on a sailboat. In may I just bought Cape Dory, 33. 1982. I'm thinking with Some. Luck. I may go to Europe with Her I'll be watching your channel for the last 4 years. I'm not the Patrion..I'm sorry I live. of a pension.I'm seventy four years old Thank you for very, very good TH-cam channel.
Hey bud! New sub! I have been sailing since I was 5 years old, and I have always dreamed of sailing the world for the rest of my life!! For now, I am into RC Boats and making them go fast! It's what I can afford right now, I am a disabled Veteran, so money is always tight! God willing, I win this lawsuit, and I can start living my life on my terms! Keep your dreams alive and always live like it's your last. God bless you, safe travels and fair seas!!
Sam is the epitome of resourcefulness and adaptability. Watching him, with his broad knowledge of all kinds of things, provides me with the desire to learn more about a lot of things. In life those who go forward with a clear head and with optimism (in spite of the obvious dangers) are the ones who have the freedom to go places where most of us would be lost. Bravo, Sam!
Great video Sam, way cool! You are correct, yours is the best sailing channel on TH-cam!! Always enjoy watching your adventures, your easy going demeanor and positive attitude is inspiring! Looking forward to the crossing. Safe travels!
A little lesson I learned recently. Separate the bananas a few feet apart and they will ripen slower. When they start showing speckles/banana freckles, put them in the fridge and that will slow down the ripening a few more days.
Sam you know very well all hoses should be double clamped...tut tut lol, your a very methodical thinker, no panicking just calmly resolving the issue, well done, safe travels, very enjoyable video as usual.
Yes. The problem is a lot of hose barbs are just not big enough for two clamps. I’ve found that trying to squeeze two clamps on a hose barb that is not quite big enough will sometimes damage the hose or result in two clamps that are just barely on. In that case I’d rather use one.
I'm a non-sailor, historically terrified of the open water irl but after finding your videos by chance have been fascinated by you, your story-telling and your journey since your first Atlantic crossing. On the topic of more subscribers, a Reddit AMA might be an interesting chance to grow your reach further and give your followers some insights! Keep up the great content and hope you got / get to Barbados safely!
As a confirmed landlubber, I love to watch your trips and am in awe of your pragmatic attitude - it feels like you and Pickled Herring are one being. Safe sailing!
I like the mural of Cesária Évora in Cape Verde. She's a favorite. Thanks for another excellent video, Sam. You're still my favorite sailing channel...despite all the ads.
I don't think the ads are anything to do with the channel. I get a different amount of ads using Chromecast compared to viewing on my tablet. TH-cam do seem to have ramped them up though. I assume this is to get you to pay for the service.
Currently in mindelo. Sailed from tenerife. Headed to Martinique in a couple days after grocery. Just downloaded the video, can't wait to watch later! I'm excited to see your experience going back across the Atlantic.
I think people get scared and tripped out at you swimming because they haven’t done it. Stay safe out there bro! It’s a pretty wild free life you live. Head up balls out and good luck bro!
Sam your video's are always interesting and you make you video's effortless to watch. Looking forward to following the Atlantic cross. Stay safe and enjoy the Cape Verde break. Make sure the leak is fixed before your long voyage.
@@samholmessailing Have checked the tape out, never seen it before. Seems to be Swedish. Could you let us know the title of the jazz track at the end ?
Love your attitude and I think you are an amazing mariner,I am an offshore sailor as well, dont enjoy solo sailing, I prefer company, I would like to mention that my 14 year old granddaughter is living with chrones disease ans she has a good attitude and a positive outlook on her future .I forwarded a link of you describing your medical condition in hopes that it might give her the inspiration to get through the rough patches, thanks for doing that video and keep on sailing
Yes Sir Samuel, it is one of the *better* sailin' channels For Sure. Your's & that little fartskinner (Rivers) with his dad, mom, & Zeker-doo are my °favorite° two! 🙏🦉 🎄
Re the earwigs - you can make a good trap using the empty orange peel ‘cups’. Just turn them upside down on the cabin sole - leaving a small gap below. The earwigs will crawl in overnight and you can heave the blighters overboard in the morning!
Enjoy your days at port or sea as 2024 is about done. Happy Holidays and New years too. Beware of water leaks -I don't like that when you're at sea. A small Christmas gift coming your way Sam. All the best to you.
Always surprised you don’t fish a little more, even if just for something to do. Maybe it would be a hassle trolling from a sailboat but you must have been going through some good spots with all the fishing boats you passed. I always enjoy your content and admire your adventurous spirit!
Yup, gotta hand it to Sam, out in the middle of the ocean, boat springs a leak, out comes the duck tape, and Pickle is good for an Atlantic crossing. A true seaman.
Thanks. Merry Christmas. Im not sure. I might prefer cockroaches over earwigs at this point though. Fortunately I finally got rid of all of them. We’ll see what we pick up in the Caribbean next lol.
Not having a seacock on those white plastic hoses is not very safe. Those hoses can break anytime and you would have no means to stop the leak from the inside. Hoping it is a non issue, Cheers, Richard
Wow what a view from the mountain top. The dew collector is sign you picked a good day to visit. Though I've usually seen them made from plastic like a tarp with a bunch of slits cut in for wind to pass through.
I almost sunk x2, one was engine raw seacock, the second time was head seacock blew out in storm, you are lucky, these thints usually happen at the worst of times. The storm time I had 2' of water below, every time water slammed against gunnels it shot up to roof, I thought I was a goner. Took axe to head housing and finally got access slammed teak plug into it. Fucking Cocks!
When did you begin to learn about sailing, Sam? Thanks so much for bringing us along with you and showing us so much of the majesty of God's creation, your experiences on the water, and what you do to maintain your vessel. As well, the personality and colors of the harbor towns. You have an understanding and a faith that is so impressive. Oh my, I've never seen an earwig. Yikes.
nice to see the pictures of Mindelo! Just spend a week there before sailing over to St Thomas. Can't wait for the crossing video with the spreader repair.
Sam ik vind het geweldig wat je doet zo zeilend over de wereld en dat alleen en alle gevaren en risico,s trotseert je bent zeiler nummero 1 voor mij👍👍👍👍
personally I couldn't trust that super flimsy bilge pump hose for underwater seacocks. But hey, you've sailed some serious NM with them.... even in this situation the hoses didnt fail just needed to tighten clamps/ add a clamp.
I found it a little cocerning that none of the thru hulls at 19.08 had shutoff valves, or is it just me liking a belt and braces approach. Good Luck Sam
Once while sailing a Cal 35 on the Chesapeake the bilge suddenly became flooded. No leaks discovered. Turns out it was coming from a scupper which was below the water line under sail and back filling. Check valves ended the problem. I knew you’d figure it out. Happy holidays. Joseph from Cape May, USA.
Best sailing channel on the internet!
🎯
I support sam and alluring artic sailing
And the Sailing Brothers and the old sea dog 😁
Really the only one I watch that uses sails almost exclusively
I’ve been waiting for this . Your videos are fantastic. I hope they don’t change. Thanks once again Sam.
'Nothing quite as permanent as a temporary fix' - How Very True!
Keep sailing Sam. I sailed as a teenager and have missed it ever since. Now at almost 80 I go virtual sailing with you. Thanks for bringing me along!

Youre one of the few sailing bloggers that focus on the boat and sailing instead of making the film about themselves. Excellent blog as usual
Lots of narcissists
Okay, okay Sam, you are right. Watched for month without subscribing…changed.

The normal rule is all hoses below the water line. Not all hoses.

@timp5668 big NO lol

LOL, you are the best dude YT. Preach on and stay gliding!
Glad you found and fixed the leak. I was worried that someone had drilled a hole in the boat sometime.... :)
