    Another early design for the Falcon ended up being the Tantive IV in A New Hope.

    Concerning the head, the Haynes Owner's Workshop Manual of the Falcon does have one it its blueprints. It's located in the crew's quarters and is called a "refresher," with a sonic shower opposite.
    When I noticed that other such reference books lacked the inclusion of the necessary facilities, and having received engineering training from the USN, I wondered what else might have left out of the supposed "plans" in the books out there.
    The most notable of these is "Star Wars Complete Vehicles Incredible Cross-Sections." When I noticed the lack in one of the vehicles in which such a room was needed, I carefully examined the rest of them. They were also missing a head or refresher. I reached out to both the publisher and author by email. The publisher never responded, but the author was pissed off that I had even the tiniest bit of criticism of his work. His reply was rude and disrespectful. Interestingly enough, he didn't deny he'd left the head out of his plans.
    Personally, I think he just forgot to include this necessary component in his zeal to cram as much technical "stuff" into his plans as possible, ignoring the mundane in favor of the more exciting things.

    My elephant in the room regarding the Falcon is that one _should_ easily be able to see the right side to the front of the ship from the cockpit, almost obstructively, but it's not in any shots looking out. You'd never be able to physically see anything from 6 oclock all the way to 11 oclock.

    The model for the first design was also slightly remodelled to become the Tantive IV, the model was about twice the size as the Star Destroyer that captured it at the beginning of the movie! :D

    Another interesting reason for the position of the cockpit was personal preference. Assuming my memory isn't failing me, alongside durability, most corellian cargo ships of the same or similar class as the falcon were known for their modularity, with various parts of the ships being relatively "easily" swapped out and replaced with other components or simply rearranged. Thus, if the owner of the ship wanted it to be so, they could replace the side mounted cockpit with a module that would fit between the cargo clamps, placing the cockpit on the front of the ship.

  • @edge_ucation
    @edge_ucation 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The ship has a huge history in Legends. When it was first manufactured, it was fed too much fuel and the thruster control jets spiraled the ship out of control and nearly destroyed the assembly line. Then it had gotten several names. Two of which was Stellar Envoy until it had crashed into a cliff, then was in the process of being restored was named Gone to Pieces, before eventually getting renamed the Millennium Falcon. The source material can be found in Star Wars Millennium Falcon, where Han and Leia's grand daughter Allana asks to go on a little space trip to try and unravel the mysterious history of the ship and actually encounter one of the previous owners before Lando when it was the Stellar Envoy.

    In the plastic model universe of Star Wars there's an interesting looping of designs:
    The original Millennium Falcon model was bashed together from existing plastic kits.
    When MPC released their SW plastic kit models (circa 1980's) they were essentially
    'copying' their competitor's kits albeit highly repurposed. lol.
    If you compare an R2-D2 kit to the Millennium Falcon kit you can see a few
    shared kit elements that are different only in scale.
    For the record Joe Johnston is a jenius. There's a real (reel?) art to this kind of kit-bashing and
    guys like Joe Johnston and Mark Stetson are some of the best in the business. They make it look easy.

    Although I really hoped that you would include an explanation about the gun turrets. I wondered how they moved/turned around, as on the old toy version from the 70’s it was just the guns that spun. From looking at the more accurate models of today and images, there’s a fixed wish bone type connection at the back that has lead me to suspect that the whole circle on the top (around the base of the gun) is what spins around. It would be cool to see if someone could clarify this up😉👍

      FYI:
      Science-fiction authors have been using that term, usually abbreviated as " 'freshers' " for about 60 years---maybe more. I remember reading it in books by Robert Heinlein, considered "The Dean of Science-fiction Writers," and instantly understanding what they meant, since in our time they're called "Rest Rooms," "Comfort Stations," and "Ladies' Retiring Rooms." I always assume toilets are present in space ships, just as I assume they have bathrooms in earlier movies and TV shows, although while they often showed bathtubs and/or shower stalls, they almost never showed the actual toilets. The thing that always puzzled about _Star Wars_ is the _sleeping_ arrangements (and why poor Anakin-kid ended up sleeping in a cold metal cavern with only a flimsy blanket in "Phantom Menace"). Stay safe.

    The Cockpit is on the side because originally it was meant to fly on what is its side with the cockpit up top, when it landed it rotated 90 degrees for the landing legs. It was similar to the B-Wing in having a rotating cockpit. However it created a problem when trying to access the tunnel when flying with the cockpit at the top. Lucas said it was meant to be a hamburger with a bit taken out but fly like a Mola fish with the cockpit at the top. The mandibles are for attaching cargo freights, of course this also them became a problem for the lights and missiles inside and center of the mandibles. That's why there are so many versions of the MF because each film wanted different things added and then there is the difference between practical model, miniature model and CG model.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber ปีที่แล้ว

    So, to address some of these.
    9. I used to be firmly against the "tugboat" theory, and I'm still against that being the original purpose of the YT-1300. However, I've come to accept that it's one of the many uses people figured out after the fact, either intended by CEC or developed by third parties (mainly due to the fact that it's been canonized). Still, I want to address some misconceptions about the Millennium Falcon specifically and the YT-1300 in general that people have about it.
    - "There's no use for light hauling craft": There's always going to be a use for light hauling craft. Large bulk and intermodal freighters are going to be the workhorses of a shipping fleet but they're too bulky and generally too slow for low-volume, high-value, high-priority cargo, and it's not profitable to use these for the various "frontier" worlds. This is where smaller ships like the YT-1300 come in. You'd also use ships like this for charter flights.
    - "There's not enough internal space for cargo": For most people, the only YT-1300 people are familiar with is the Millennium Falcon. Here's the thing about the Falcon, though - it's NOT a freighter in its particular configuration. The original model the Millennium Falcon started off as was a YT-1300FP, which is a mixed-traffic variant designed to carry both passengers and cargo, and it's been further modified to use the forward hold as a lounge and the center rear hold as an extended engineering bay for the upgraded and much larger hyperdrive. Furthermore, the internal corridors of the vessel have been rerouted from the original circular hallway, removing one of the Port-side holds in favor of additional living quarters and bigger power banks for the quad laser cannons. This is all from the original Haynes manual for the ship. The YT-1300F, the dedicated cargo variant of the YT-1300, has far larger cargo holds than the Falcon, significantly reduced living quarters, and a far more efficient internal layout.
    - "Obviously the mandibles are supposed to be used for something, why else would they be there?" and "The offset cockpit makes no sense unless it's meant to see past a much longer attachment": More Haynes Manual stuff applies here. The YT-1300 isn't the first YT-series freighter to have an offset cockpit, this design choice goes back to the YT-1200 and YT-1250. These previous ships have a single overhead crane and a large cargo door at the front of the ship, leaving no room for a front-mounted cockpit. The front cargo door remained a feature on the YT-1300 as well, although the mechanical crane was replaced with a multipurpose magnetic grappler and light tractor beam system capable of being used to load cargo, dock small auxiliary craft, and connect further attachments. Which can include an intermodal freight module, but again I must stress the fact that that's not the sole purpose of the YT-1300. As a side note, I'd also like to point out that there is a center cockpit variant and an "armored" variant that eliminates the cockpit altogether and allows the ship to be flown from the pilot station in the forward hold (if you're wondering, the console Han Solo sat at while Luke was undergoing basic force training during the trip to the Alderaan system in A New Hope is the pilot station), both at the expense of the magnetic grappler system and front loading door. The center-cockpit design sandwiches a streamlined central cockpit between and slightly above the mandibles. The armored variant bridges the mandibles entirely, looking a bit like the Millennium Falcon From _Solo_ but without the cockpit.
    - "The engines are overbuilt for a freighter, therefore it must be designed to push a much larger load. Therefore, it can ONLY be a tugboat": People who make this argument are, honestly, idiots. Star Wars isn't Star Trek, they're not a post-scarcity economy and their system is highly capitalistic. Ship manufacturers have to appeal to potential customers beyond simple practical use. And while there may not be a practical purpose to making a light freighter fly like a heavy fighter, there's definitely a marketing reason for doing so. Again, I have to mention the original Haynes manual, as it explicitly states that the YT-1300's engines were intentionally overbuilt to make it fun to fly to appeal to starship enthusiasts, vacuum jockeys and other people who would quickly get bored with a slower but more efficient vessel.
    Now, one additional argument I have against the idea that the YT-1300 is a dedicated tugboat is the fact that having a dedicated tugboat going around without pushing anything would be out-of-place.
    7. Just to go back to the internal space argument from 9 for a bit, the kitchenette on the Falcon is another example of how the ship has been completely repurposed from its original role as a mixed-traffic light freighter to a personal transport ship capable of housing a few people for extended periods of time.
    On a separate note, access to fresh food is a gift in and of itself when previously your only option was stale rations, and the kitchenette is something to facilitate that.
    6. Again, the mandibles are multi-purpose. They're not just for pushing cargo. And in between them is, again, a cargo loading door.
    5. In legends, the Falcon's temperamental hyperdrive wasn't always just a malfunction. The ship was equipped with three droid brains that effectively made the ship sentient with a limited degree of free will, and it wanted to fight the Empire.

    I always thought they might have added another YT 1300f Corellian freighter somewhere in the films.. if they were built in large numbers, you’d imagine you’d see more

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber ปีที่แล้ว

      There's one in the background during the spaceport scene in Revenge of the Sith, it's unnamed in canon but it's actually one of the two YT-1300s that eventually ended up as part of the Millennium Falcon in Legends, the Stellar Envoy. In one of the reworked versions of A New Hope we also see a YT-2400 landing at Mos Eisley space port. Again, this ship goes unnamed in canon but in Legends this is Dash Rendar's Outrider.
      Other YTs appear on occasion in licensed media.

      He added and upgraded many of the Falcon's offensive and defensive systems. The upper and lower turrets were originally twin cannons and he upgraded them to quads and added automation to allow them to be controlled from the cockpit. He added the hidden swivel gun in the right mandible and missle launchers between the mandibles. Hull armor was upgraded throughout the ship. Shield generators were replaced with military grade units. Saying that the Falcon is a modified YT-1300 is an understatement.

    Real life spacecraft fuel is called Hydrazine and it’s also quite toxic stuff.

    • @BennyLlama39
      @BennyLlama39 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't most fuel toxic in one way or another, due to chemical make up and the effects of burning it? 🤔

    • @thoriated
      @thoriated 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hydrazine is typically only used in thrusters these days. Monopropellant over catalyst is very reliable for a thruster that is on-off cycling, and is stable in long term storage. Has low thrust for the mass though. Main launch engines typically burn kerosene or hydrogen with oxygen. Kerosene is energy dense and easy to handle. Most common for first stage. Hydrogen is cheap and efficient, the exhaust is water vapor, but it is difficult to store and handle with lower energy density (needs a bigger tank). Most common on upper stages. Liquid methane is starting to be used (Starship) as a middle ground between kerosene and hydrogen.
      An important factor in rocket thrust is the velocity of the molecules. Velocity of gas molecules is dependent on temperature and mass of the molecule. Temperature is limited by the material of the engine. H2O molecules have lower mass than CO2, so they have higher velocity, therefore more thrust for the temperature. Both hydrogen and Kerosene engines are run rich to control temperatures as well as producing H2 and CO molecules which are lighter and faster.

    I was told the cockpit of the falcon was inspired by the B-29 bomber

  • @tengel07
    @tengel07 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Puh - not really true, that the smaller falcon uses the lower scaled kit parts: the 5foot falcon has the Scale 1/12 12-Cylinder-Ferrari 312B Engine parts on the top of the mandibles, the 32" Falcon uses the Scale 1/12 V8-Ford-Engine Parts from the Tyrrell P34 (both kits made by Tamiya).
    The 5Footer is much more detailed with modelkit parts as the 32" falcon...

  • @Caseytify
    @Caseytify 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually the cockpit design was based on the B-29. The trick of adding scale parts on the outside of a model has a long history in FX. They're called "greeblies." The original Battlestar Galactica was built the same way. Parts from the Revell Saturn V kit are easily discerned.

    • @seajaye9540

    Can someone please explain the gunner positions on the falcon? When Luke and Han run to the gun turrets after Obi wan dies, they go up and down a ladder. But in the next scene they look at each other as if sitting at the ends of a horizontal tube. This would make them like waist gunner positions, shooting out the sides of the ship. But the guns are top and bottom. This has pissed me off since the first time I saw the movie in the 70s. Makes no sense since the guns are in front of them and they aren't strapped into seats facing up and down respectively.

    • @jedironin380
      @jedironin380 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I recall correctly (?), the gunner's stations are in a zero-gravity "well" in the center of the ship. The top gunner is sitting with their feet straight up, and the belly gunner is sitting with their feet straight down. Camera angles make them appear to be beside each other.
