      I was really baffled at first cause it was begging for a big showdown again and when it ended so quickly i felt lost in thought. Watched it back a few times and i noticed so many things and was so blown away by what I missed. So little, showed bigger- it was perfect, has some much depth in a 30 second clip than most stuff SW does, it was brilliantly made!!

    • @the_meridian
      @the_meridian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MH is an actor who reads a script and delivers lines. He's not the authority on what is or is not Luke Skywalker. TLJ gave him a proper character arc instead of just rubber-stamping who he was so long ago. A mini-fall and redemption so breathtaking and beautifully thought out...fuck MH for not getting it.

      @@the_meridian I love how you completely disrespect the man who played Luke Skywalker, and who grew up with this Role and this Franchise always staying to it and its Fans contrary to someone like Harrison Ford. I wouldnt call it a proper Charakter Arch to randomly turn one of the greatest Heroes in Cinemahistory who had a long and rocky way to becoming a Jedi Knight, into someone who trys to murder a Boy in his Sleep because he had a Bad dream. It is simply dishonorable and definately not a way to evolve an Old charakter. Mark Hamill has every right in not agreeing with this Role and if you liked The Last Jedi, good for you, but you propably shouldnt just go around and Insult the people who made this Franchise what it is today, because they dont like they way it wents. It is just completely disrespectful and unnecessary

    • @the_meridian
      @the_meridian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@painkillerauflauf5770 Why do I need to respect actors? They do pretty well for what they do. He'll be okay. Now, about you, it becomes clear why you don't like the character arc. Yoiu have a fundamental flaw in your understanding of what you watched. Luke did not "Try" to kill his nephew. No, he was *tempted* to kill his nephew because of his strength and the dark side he could clearly sense was brewing in him. He withheld himself from the temptation, but did not clear the scene before Kylo saw him hovering over him, unfortunately. OJ Simpson was once considered a hero. Lance Armstrong. Pete Rose. Heroes are people with flaws. They do not achieve perfection and then remain in statis for the rest of their lives. Now that you understand, you've taken your first step into a larger world. And F MH btw.

      @davidalan528 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke didn’t abandon Ben. Proof: Ben lived to be redeemed. What Luke did was prioritize the fate of the galaxy over that of his nephew - *without killing his nephew* so that he’d still have a shot at redemption.
      It’s a different circumstance than with Vader. In order to save the galaxy over Endor, Luke *had* to redeem his father or they could not have beaten Palps. (He also stayed his hand because to kill him in anger would be to fall. If that scene had gone down differently, maybe Luke never loses his cool and he kills Vader out of calm necessity…then gets bodied by the most powerful Sith in millennia.)

  • @andrewsigrist9981
    @andrewsigrist9981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    Luke's depiction in TLJ is totally in keeping with his depiction in the original trilogy
    did... did you watch the original trilogy? We're talking about the guy who had so much faith in Vader that he bet his life on it. Even after seeing Vader murder his mentor in front of him. After Vader cut off his hand. After hearing about how Vader tortured his friends. Even after all that, even while being tortured by Palpatine, he refused to give up and refused to believe that Vader was beyond redemption.
    Yeah... that sounds like the same guy who considered murdering his nephew in his sleep.

      I totally agree with you guys, the last jedi totally butchered Luke's character. It also shows that RJ does not understand the force and that goes for anyone who likes what he did with Luke. Luke would never have tried to kill Ben because to do so would have pushed himself down the path to the dark side. The very thing that he had been afraid Ben was heading. Luke would have tried everything but that to save Ben. This TH-camr is entitled to his opinion on the last jedi, he can like it if he wants to, it does show that he has bad taste as it is objectively the worst star wars movie ever.

    • @nickdemora
      @nickdemora 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @jules7729
      @jules7729 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah trying to kill his own nephew was something that never really made sense to me but the way I think about it, Luke has tapped into the dark side before, during his fight with Vader in RoTJ when he threatened to turn Leia to the dark instead of Luke.
      I guess afterwards as he was trying to recreate the Jedi Order he became obsessed with making it perfect, making sure it was stronger than the one before. So when he saw his nephew’s future he realised that this is exactly what happened to Anakin, whose turn led to the destruction of the Jedi. In that moment of darkness he saw Ben as a threat to the Jedi Order he created and decided to eliminate the darkness instead of redeeming it to the light like he did to his father.
      So afterwards when Ben destroyed the Jedi Order, Luke realised this is basically how his father turned and just lost faith in himself and the Jedi Order, believing if he couldn’t fix it then it should just die. Also there was no way he’d be able to face Leia. That’s why he went to hide on Ahch-To.
      Anyways IK the whole Luke Skywalker in TLJ doesn’t make sense but this is how I see it.

    • @andrewsigrist9981
      @andrewsigrist9981 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jules7729 I think the thing that upsets me most is how easy the fix is.
      Instead of giving up on his nephew he ignored several warning signs. He refused to give up his belief that his nephew could be saved, but in the end the lure of the dark side was too strong. Despite his best efforts Ben fell anyway and Luke is now plagued by self doubt and guilt.
      This not only gives a more plausible reason why Luke is such a grumpy old hermit without eviscerating his character but it also sets Ben up as a super menacing villain. He's so far gone not even Luke can save him, and that's a claim that even Vader can't make.
      Change a few lines of dialog and you restore Luke's character, too bad TLJ wasn't made by star wars fans

    For example 1, the "High ground" in Episode 3 is one of the best moments in the entire franchise.
    Obi Wan and Anakin weren't like Kenobi and Darth Maul or any other opponents we saw in the Star Wars movies because they basically trained each other for years and years. They were both masters of quite different lightsaber forms (I honestly don't remember which are which), but they knew each other's tendencies better than anyone else. Obi Wan was a master of the defensive style, Anakin was much more aggressive and offensively-minded.
    Taking the high ground gave Obi Wan's tendency to defend a clear advantage. This elevation and distance would give Kenobi plenty of time to counter any attack. I'd argue, Kenobi never expected Anakin to go for such a risky move, and showed Obi Wan again that he was not Anakin anymore.

    • @RataStuey

    • @emmental2020
      @emmental2020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The high ground means virtually nothing in this situation. All Anakin had to do was hop off the platform and continue fighting. The person below on an incline actually has the advantage as they don't have to defend their legs. The guy on higher ground has to learn forward and stretch to protect themselves because the arms are attached to the upper body.
      Maul could have killed Kenobi twice in episode one with the flick of the wrist as he tried to jump over him at the beginning and end of the fight. The same again when he jumps over Grievous in episode 3. It's only until right at the end someone figures out trying to jump over an opponent with a lightsaber is a really bad idea.

    no lukes depiction in episode 8 is not an accurate depiction of his character. literally every one else including mark hamil can see that so would you just wake up already ffs.
    luke cared about his friends and family more than anything else. he cared about them more than the Jedi, more than the rebellion, and more than the entire galaxy. this is why luke was willing to drop every thing to go to help his friends or family when he felt they needed them. he dropped his jedi training to go save han and leia on cloud city and he dropped his mission with the rebellion to go confront his father with the goal of turning him back to the darkside. its important to not that the second luke found out who vader was his goal shifted from killing him to saving him purely because vader was his father. no matter how much fear he had he never got to the point where he would kill a family member even when the fear is for the survival of another family member as we see in lukes final confrontation with vader when Vader says he will go after leia prompting luke to dip into the dark side but only going as far as disarming vader. another important aspect of luke is how he represents hope in the galaxy. he is literally the new hope and from his initial appearance he is always looking toward the horizon at a brighter future. lukes has so much hope that he refuses to give up hope for his father even when the rest of the galaxy and every one who actually knew the guy already had. and can you blame them he was space hitler. but luke saw that there was aa glimmer of light left in his father and held onto the hope that he could use that to turn his father back against all odds.
    luke in the last jedi turns his back on the entire galaxy, goes to a planet nobody can find to die,, refuses to come back to help his sister who is being chased by the first order despite finding out they had already killed his best friend, and becomes so hopeless he literally decides to burn everything down. oh and the reason for him becoming this hopeless is because he sensed that his nefew might fall to the dark side and got super scared so he tried to kill him in his sleep. cuz you know the guy who refused to give up on space hitler is totally going to try to kill his nephew because he has the chance of becoming space hitler 2.0 instead of trying to guide him away from that path. guese killing kids just runs in the family am i right.
    the luke in the last jedi is literally the polar opposite of the luke in the original trilogy. he does things ot luke would never do and they use that to justify him becoming the complete opposite of ot luke. this makes no sense people need to stop trying to defend it. i have always said you can like bad movies and that is fine, you can even gloss over their mistakes and say you dont really care. but you must acknowledge they are mistakes and stop trying to excuse them other wise the mistakes will never be addressed in the future. "if you make a mistake and refuse to correct it then that is a second mistake". i like the prequels. i acknowledge they have shitty dialogue, the acting at times comes off as cringe, and jar jar is a literal clown they through in to distract the kids. i acknowledge these mistakes and i hate them but i still like the prequels. accept you like something that has flaws and move on.

    I don't have a problem with Luke's sacrifice. In fact, how else could he go, it would have to be something sacrificial. I can deal with him exiling himself, although I hate the given reasons. But the smug, grumpy little curmudgeon they had him be? No fuckin way. THAT characterization is wrong. And the Luke of lore would have done anything to save Kylo, not almost kill him.
    Anyways, what most of us wanted, seeing Luke from the novels, was admittedly made difficult because George Lucas was wishy washy and wasted so many years. Now the big three are a bit old in real life to pull it off convincingly.
    I grew up with Star Wars and read every novel and comic up till the first few Disney novels(and I will get to those). Luke deserves more screen time. It's not the ending as much as all the missing in between.

    Sorry, but I will always disagree with the whole "the DS1 weakness was intentional" thing being "smart" (or good).
    ...mostly because the entire story surrounding the guy that designed it was more than slightly nonsensical. I mean let's put it in the manner of an Imperial giving a report:
    "So our lead designer tried to flee the project, but luckily, we tracked him down and killed his family in front of him. Since then, he's been working his butt off, completely devoted to the Empire and the project, and we should be finishing our greatest weapon in no time at all"
    This... was not "smart" -and I don't mean by the Empire, I mean at all.

    Great thing about star wars media is that it elicits many different reactions and opinions, but I genuinely don't understand how anyone can think Luke's depiction in TLJ is great. They took probably the most noble character in cannon and turned him into a moody, bitter, old bastard. Johnson was pretty open about how he wanted to destroy the character too. Luke wasn't even slightly likeable in TLJ.

    Surprised there’s not more from the sequel trilogy in here... despite their shortcomings it contained some smart decisions:
    -Holdo sacrificing herself to destroy the First Order ship, letting the remnants of the rebellion escape.
    -Rey force passing Kylo a lightsaber so that he can defeat the Knights of Ren.
    -Kylo killing Snoke while at the same time mentally manipulating him that his intentions were to kill Rey.
    Also some more general praise towards Palp and the long game he played with Anakin from manipulating his conception to slowly corrupting him from esteemed Jedi warrior into Vader.

    Honestly, #3 was what saved The Last Jedi for me. It's an understanding on the writers' part that that being on the light side isn't about having the coolest sword or the best fighting skills, it's about understanding the ideas of decency and personal responsibility and kindness, and knowing exactly how much power those things have. And it presents the clearest example of why that is to the audience that we've seen, at least in the main film series.

    Making the fatal flaw intentional is the actual joke.
    In the original canon. . . only a force-user could ever have hit this one (of many, by the way) secondary exhaust ports, as they're very small and well-defended (even to being ray-shielded).
    There is nothing smart in the sequel trilogy - stop lying to us, thanks.
