Flintstoned I think it would be a good idea to stop releasing suspect's names unless they know for sure and they need help from the public to find the person.
I remember a woman picketing his house, wanting to show her kid "the face of a killer", well I hope this woman had the fortitude of facing her kid and say: look at MY face, this is the face of a woman who committed an unforgivable injustice...
I live in marietta, ga and me and my family had been at the olympics that day, we missed the track and field event the next day because we were scared. my uncle was a cop who worked security for the games, i have vivid memories of seeing my mom and grondmother in our house watching the tv and being in total shock
Eric Rudolph was likely a govt. asset used to commit bombings and allow for plausible deniability... the FBI knew he was the bomber all along and targeted Richard Jewell for preventing the second bombing
“On each anniversary of the bombing until his illness and eventual death, (Richard Jewell) would privately place a rose at the Centennial Olympic Park scene where spectator Alice Hawthorne died.”
Bob Costa raised the question of "what if he didn't do it, where does he go to get his reputation back?" Costa has a great interview on youtube explaining the whole story.
I just watched the entire Manhunt Season 2 and that is how I became aware of this story. It's beyond concerning how predatory (federal) law enforcers and the media can be. Similarly, it's always worrying how gullible the public is to these two entities. Richard Jewell deserves a monument for what he did, and an apology, as loud as the accusations against him had been. CNN, NBC, ABC, and the NY Post, this case will forever taint your image.
The attorney's comment at the end about the media and their culpability in this is spot on- most people didn't realize that Jewell was never arrested. "Is that the implication you should get from 'responsible' reporting?"
all he did was save people and what he got in return was a ruined life and reputation. this is the type of situation that makes people "mind their business" when faced with an emergency situation or somebody who needs help. reminds me of the case of a chinese older woman who fell and broke her leg and the person who helped her ended up being blamed and taken to court. a few years later, a toddler was ran over by 2 cars and none of the 18 people who saw her helped.
I am taken aback by the agent in 6:34 complaining of Richard Jewell's lawyer advising his client Mr. Jewell to protect his constitutionally sanctioned interests.
You'd think people would learn, but just recently there was a spree killing at a German university, and some troll on Twitter claimed to know that it was a certain person. Enough people fell for it and harassed the guy online.
How you can say it's going to be fantastic? Just because it will have DiCaprio and Hill or any other actors in the World? And because it will be directed by Clint Eastwood or any other director in the world? How you can tell the movie is going to be a good one?
The FBI dropped the ball twice on this one. They hounded the wrong guy. Meanwhile, Eric Rudolph was tucked away in the N. Carolina mountains, not too far from Atlanta, and the FBI was clueless about his whereabouts.
It was disgusting how law enforcement and the media treated him! No evidence but was convicted in the eyes of the media. Not to mention he saved many lives.
Law enforcement should have never labeled Jewell as the prime suspect when he was just a person of interest who at that time was just being questioned and investigated. They should have never given out any personal information on anyone linked to the case most of all Jewell. They not only violated his privacy rights, but they also put him in harm's way because when the public has a name along with the words prime suspect they immediately think guilty, and what his sentencing should be without because he called this in which saved the lives of many people by turning it in when he observed it, and why would he do that if he was the that placed then set the bombs to go off. Yes the reporters should have known better when they put his name and info out there but many of them have no respect for people's rights or privacy, and they have no morals when it comes to being ethical. That is why they should never be trusted with sensitive information
How horrible is it that it is always easier to convince the world that someone is evil then it is to believe that someone truley has goodness and love in their heart. 😯

I remember a woman picketing his house, wanting to show her kid "the face of a killer", well I hope this woman had the fortitude of facing her kid and say: look at MY face, this is the face of a woman who committed an unforgivable injustice...
That newspaper editor @ 8:20 is a shameless and cold hearted person.
HE IS RON MARTZ HE IS NOT AN EDITOR HE WROTE NUMEROUS ARTICLES FALSELY ACCUSING RICHARD JEWELL OF BEING THE BOMBER.
"Most days with the blinds drawn" guy likes his privacy like me I also have my blinds closed all day lol
mad world171 I thought the same thing... I don’t tend to stand in my open window waving at everyone.
Same
RIP Richard. I remember what happened to you....You did a great service!
Wow I feel for Richard Jewell. Poor guys life was ruined. Thank you for this great series!
"What lessons did law enforcement and the press learn from this?"
What is Not a goddamn thing?
"NBC, CNN, and the New York Post."
Wow...
Shocking...
Yeah, go figure.
Jee I wonder why
Who came from the movie trailer of this great man???
Why do you want to know?
I remember when they blamed Adam Lanzas brother and acted like it was nothing correcting it later.
This is exactly the proof that shows how the government treats people just to close a case
I live in marietta, ga and me and my family had been at the olympics that day, we missed the track and field event the next day because we were scared. my uncle was a cop who worked security for the games, i have vivid memories of seeing my mom and grondmother in our house watching the tv and being in total shock
I remember this. I was in 8th grade. Glad the man has a movie being made about him.
how does this only have 300 likes in over 4.5 years. Very underrated
Eric Rudolph nearly got away with this despicable crime!!!
Eric Rudolph was likely a govt. asset used to commit bombings and allow for plausible deniability... the FBI knew he was the bomber all along and targeted Richard Jewell for preventing the second bombing
@@mightymouse8026 have you been snorting that tinfoil
How does the public not know Rudolph's name yet we knows Jewells name as a suspect :-(
R.i.p Richard Jewell a hero who saved lives!!
“On each anniversary of the bombing until his illness and eventual death, (Richard Jewell) would privately place a rose at the Centennial Olympic Park scene where spectator Alice Hawthorne died.”
This is what happens when you want to help.
Who’s here after watching a trailer?
Me
Me... I'm not from the USA and I'm in shock. The media are so disgusting.
Me
He said he doesn't feel responsible for the chaos the Atlanta journal csusesd Richard jewel. Wow
HE AND KATHY SCRUGGS RAN AWAY LIKE CHICKENS
Hilarious to see NYT talk about responsible reporting 😂
It’s scary how gullible the people are, they would believe the media..
Who's here after watching Richard Jewel trailer (or later) the movie?
You already know.....lol
Bob Costa raised the question of "what if he didn't do it, where does he go to get his reputation back?" Costa has a great interview on youtube explaining the whole story.
Watching this as the 2021 Olympics start. The algorithm has a twisted sense of humor.
Name the journalists and editors involved. Give examples of their dishonesty/manipulations while doing so. Let people hound them.
May your kind soul rest forever in peace Richard! I'm sure there's a special place for heroes like you up there!
This is rich, the NYT has a piece on responsible reporting. These people are insane!
I came here after seeing the trailer.
I saw the movie Richard Jewell. I can see why the media doesn't like it. Really good movie.
The attorney's comment at the end about the media and their culpability in this is spot on- most people didn't realize that Jewell was never arrested.
"Is that the implication you should get from 'responsible' reporting?"
A runner brought the Olympic Torch right by the front of my house. I was shocked.
How many innocent people are behind bars because of this type of crap - too often
NYT should practice what it preaches
@Vincent Cuttolo emphasis on the word "were." NY Times has fallen from grace.
Imagine just sitting there watching the tv and you see your self on the crime list.
The AJC is crap journalism, I'm a native Atlantan and never read that rag.
Atlanta Urinal & Constipation
I just watched the movie AGAIN and my heart goes out to this man may he Rest In Peace. He’s an American HERO!!!!
This sounds like something that the new York times would do today
So 20 something years later social media proves more helpful and honest than regular media.
all he did was save people and what he got in return was a ruined life and reputation. this is the type of situation that makes people "mind their business" when faced with an emergency situation or somebody who needs help. reminds me of the case of a chinese older woman who fell and broke her leg and the person who helped her ended up being blamed and taken to court. a few years later, a toddler was ran over by 2 cars and none of the 18 people who saw her helped.
NYT these videos show your journalists ethics and I think you've done a great time adapting to the changing media landscape, congrats
God bless Richard soul May he Rest In Peace ✌🏿❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m glad that the film was made and existed. I was too young to remember any of this so this is a fascinating story to go back to
I LOVE it when movies are based of documents I can research before the movies release
Watching this in late 2021, the irony of this being a NYT piece is just overwhelming.
I remember when this happened well it was a media frenzy. Jewell was screwed over.
I'm just glad he lived out his dream of becoming a police officer
I am taken aback by the agent in 6:34 complaining of Richard Jewell's lawyer advising his client Mr. Jewell to protect his constitutionally sanctioned interests.
You'd think people would learn, but just recently there was a spree killing at a German university, and some troll on Twitter claimed to know that it was a certain person. Enough people fell for it and harassed the guy online.
It’s the cops fault that leaked his name right at the start.
true
this is sad as it gets, a true hero maligned by the media and he died too young , at 44 christ
I didn't know he'd died :(
Excellent story, very engaging; thanks!
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill will do a movie about this. It is going to be fantastic.
That's honestly a good idea.
I came to watch this because I they said something about this in the oscars red carpet interview
How you can say it's going to be fantastic? Just because it will have DiCaprio and Hill or any other actors in the World? And because it will be directed by Clint Eastwood or any other director in the world? How you can tell the movie is going to be a good one?
ledepi34 because Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't make bad movies. Especially at this point in his career.
Casey Free, yes you're right, because Leonardo DiCaprio is the only perfect human in the World. Right?
I didn’t know that a man was wrongfully accused of this incident.
The FBI dropped the ball twice on this one. They hounded the wrong guy. Meanwhile, Eric Rudolph was tucked away in the N. Carolina mountains, not too far from Atlanta, and the FBI was clueless about his whereabouts.
THEY WERE
Richard Jewell was a hero. RIP
This is actually being turned into a movie at the time it has not come out yet but I encourage you to watch it
Who is here after the Richard Jewell trailer?
I was 15 when this happened and it made a HUGE impression on me. About the press, and authority in general. Federal and otherwise.
I know
It was disgusting how law enforcement and the media treated him! No evidence but was convicted in the eyes of the media. Not to mention he saved many lives.
I'm glad that the movie shed light on this case to the next generation. Easy to forget this was over twenty years ago.
Have the media and law enforcement learnt anything from the tragic case of Richard Jewell?
NO.
THEY NEVER DID LEARN. The ajc is still arrogant.
rest in peace Richard, you were a good man :)
This happened 2 days before I was born and never heard about it
Saw richard jewell last night, it was so good but terribly sad
well, the FBI kept it's bad habit of false accusations. they hit and miss. ...it depends if you are democrat or republican
"i don't feel responsible for what happened to him" everyone involved is responsible. You ruined an innocent mans life after he saved many.
Poor guy. Too bad he wasn't able to collect some compensation for all that harassment.
He deserved so much more Rest In Peace hero 🦸♂️
Many lives would have ended that day if it wasn’t for Richard Jewell
Saved people and gets treated as a criminal . Thank God we don't have FBI in our country
2 THUMBS UP
I've just seen the film "Richard Jewell"
and I had to find out more about this extraordinary story!
twitter was created in 2006 this was 1996, @ 0:58 she says tweeting out
I need an explanation because this is creepy
How horrible is it that it is always easier to convince the world that someone is evil then it is to believe that someone truley has goodness and love in their heart. 😯
