He even sounds like Snake from Ground Zeros
I watched the whole GQ Interview, they never brought up Metal Gear Solid? You took a clip of him talking about non John Carpenter Snake Plissken movies that were proposed to him. Did you just not understand what he was saying, or you wanted to make click bait?
Thanks @@ryankerns2450 for saving my time
@@ryankerns2450 Glad I wasn't the only one skeptical upon watching this clip and never once hearing "Kojima," "Metal Gear," or "video games."
Derp @@snacklepussPSN
We got David Hayter as a result. And I am so grateful for that!
Exactly. I still hate how Kojima disrespected him by trying to change him every single game and he never even met him once. I know it’s his game and he is obsessed with Hollywood but it sucks that he treated him bad. The fans love him and he is the only one who doesn’t want him lol I’m glad Konami is treating David the way he deserves and I don’t like Konami at all
@@tonylovesducks2501heard that too
@@tonylovesducks2501 I'm with you 100%. I love Kojima and all he has done for the gaming industry, but his treatment of David Hayter (especially with replacing him on MGSV with Kiefer Sutherland) was downright disrespectful. Hayter made the voice of Snake iconic for me and countless others since the first Metal Gear Solid and kept me going as fan for over a decade. He should not have been cast aside so easily just because of Kojima's vanity.
@@tonylovesducks2501 David Hayter's Solid Snake is equivalent to Kevin Conroy's Batman.
@@tonylovesducks2501 fr I get that kojima was trying establish that big boss and solid snake aren’t the same by also changing their voice but the way david got treated for that is more than unacceptable
I get it. He was a movie guy and video games are different. Especially back in that time period, video games did not have the respect they have now. On top of that, a character that is clearly taking reference from movies, it probably looked like a cheesy project that would be a waste of time. There was no way he would know how different Snake really was.
Did you even listened to him? He didnt said im a movie guy. He said the issue is, they were trying to milk the snakes name to draw attention and that was not appealing
@@diackoakafrankie3151He literally did say “im a movie guy” at the very start of the clip
@@therealakiyama its not applicable to the actual cause of canceling it
But from a a point of view that isn’t as resourced and educated enough to know the difference, would say these are all the same character characters like agent fourty seven or Wxiao Audiotore, Therefore the actor protects the writer of those characters and his own story arc in to creating such piece. Metal is just one guy who turns out is a clone of war criminal with nukes. Plissken wasn’t lieutenant Dan dying the same war again and again. There’s no cross over like alien and predator movies… cheesy to the trained eye, profitable to the not
@@therealakiyamamainly said he’s a different era. Violence in America wasn’t as possible as owning a weapon. A gun is a commodity but America was a Walmart purchase. To portray that in a video game during those times is like asking for Tomb Raider to be black or someone ugly like Adele or Lady Gaga. Like Trump been a actual corrupt businessman and a pornstar wife instead of nude model
Im glad Kurt never played Kojimas Snake. Kojimas Snakes and Carpenters Snake are two seperate beings. Despite Big Boss having his Eye Patch and Solid saying his name was Plisskin for a few hours.
Exactly, what gets lost is Snake was originally a direct reference from a tiny little action hero pc game. By the time Solid Snake started getting popular he had already grown a personality pretty different from Pliskin's. Other than the name I don't know how people can say its just a EFNY clone like John Carpenter owns the idea of sci fi action espionage as a genre.
Give me a ducking break. He literally stole the character lol. He didn't steal the STORY Of course, by snake is a stolen character and design. Lol. That's undeniable. @@groovysnake6664
John Carpenter actually allowed Kojima to use that name. Iroquois means rattlesnake.
Interesting@@Wxyver_n
Kurt Russell is a straight shooter, he essentially didn't want to do it because Plissken is so inextricably linked to him and carpenter, and I respect him for it.
Snake in Kojima's game is a different character but a riff nonetheless. Am glad Russell didn't voice big boss as David hayter is iconic as the videogame character. and I hope one day Carpenter and Russell will make a third escape movie. So before people start slamming Russell, he is an absolute legend 🙌
kurt russell is like 100 years old. why would you want a 3rd movie at his age? you see Indiana Jones with 100 year old Harrison ford & Terminator with 100 year old Arnold Schwarzenegger & 100 year old Linda Hamilton & Ghostbusters Frozen Empire with 100 year old Dan Aykroyd & 100 year old Bill Murray... nvm Expendables with an assortment of 100 year old former action movie stars... who wants that? lol nobody...
Nah, he just didn't understand the question. He thought Solid Snake was an adaptation of Snake Pliskin.
And it never was. Inspired by maybe, but still entirely different. And he clearly still to this DAY doesn't even know that
@@JimmymatthewbTrue
@@Jimmymatthewbit’s just out of his realm. Would have loved to see him
pay respect to another medium but you can’t fault the guy for just not knowing better. It’s crazy that Solid Snake is FAR more iconic now too.
In the process he allowed the character Solid Snake to become unique to storytelling/entertainment in a way that is stand alone. That's how I see them at least, I don't associate them with each other at all.
Loyal to John Carpenter. As much as I would of loved to see him voice Big Boss, I respect why he didn’t.
He's not talking about mgs there mate
Its admiral how much respect he has for John. Too many people on this post are concentrating on the wrong stuff.
Kurt refused to work on it if John wasn't involved. I understand why he chose not to milk the character further. But I think David Hayter somehow perfected the character adding the legendary voice. But due respect, Kurt missed a great opportunity.
I don’t think he was offered a metal gear casting role because he just didn’t know about it but I think he would have turned it down still
Incredible extrapolation lmao
Lel@@DrunkPlaylists
He's exactly right it does not always translate. I also believe he might not admit it, he didn't see it going too far. That Snake is one of the biggest in action heroes. Characters. Honestly things happen for a reason, and we got " kept you waiting, huh?"
The irony is that 70% of Kojima’s body is made of movies, also he is now way more similar to Carpenter and Tarantino with preferred recurring actors such as Norman Reedus and others than it was now, exactly the same thing that happened as Carpenter’s recurring choice for Russel in recurring movies.
What movies… are you saying his work steals from movies cause yes I’d agree but he doesn’t make movies
@@raidersofsteak2227the 70% of his body is movies thing just means that he likes movies and references them in his work, and he likes movies
@@bigbrainedSteve he likes them so much he steals from them I think his love for movies is amazing but he isn’t as creative as people think
@@raidersofsteak2227 I think there's a difference between stealing and taking inspiration from something.

He would make a great old snake or even playing big boss in a live action adaptation
If you ask me. He looks like Colonel Campbell more.

He didn't understand the question and thought it was about a Snake Pliskin adaptation.
You misunderstood his point, he didn't want to do Snake if it wasn't written by the original writer
@swfcocs1 you can still tell he doesn't understand what's actually being discussed people always think celebrities know exactly what being discussed when most of the time they discus something with their agent or get a script and don't like it and that's the last they ever think about it then give some generic interview question when people ask why they didn't accept some random role they harldy even remember discussing
@@swfcocs1 The original writer of Solid Snake was Kojima though, regardless of inspirations. Russell’s implying that Solid Snake was merely an expansion, and not a new character, and that’s honestly shortsighted and frankly a little insulting to Kojima.
@@swfcocs1
No shit, but that wasn't my point.
@Alex_Logan22 it was the reason he didn't want ro be involved, seems pretty relevant to me, and not sure about the narkiness, I was pretty polite originally
I reckon Kojima tried to get him for MGS3 to play Big Boss. Especially as Hayter said he had to reaudition for Naked Snake.
I believe that was indeed confirmed in an article many years ago but I could be mistaken
Back then videogame work was seen as slumming it for movie stars.
@@Mario_N64 Yeah, still kinda is for a lot of them
@@PetrosofSparta They were scared because that huge PS1 game with Bruce Willis bombed.
That's exactly what happened
I love how loyal Kurt is to his directors. He finds the ones that really fit him, and then sticks with them for a couple of movies!
The crazy thing is you could axtually hear a decent snake voice within kurts voice, it could have worked!!
I agree!! Especially when he said “something new. Something fresh”
Ironically enough, John Carpenter is a pretty big gamer himself, from what I've gathered. I remember him saying that he didn't finish RDR2 because he "couldn't get on the damn horse".
Yeah but Kurt is not much into games it seems.
Honestly, it's a good thing that Kurt didn't star as Solid Snake. If he did, then he would've been seen as a cheap rip-off. Without that association, Kojima was able to build up Solid Snake into an iconic character in his own right.
Imagine Kurt Russel in Snake Eater
He’s not wrong speaking from a solely artistic perspective. I respect the hell out of Kurt Russell and his body of work. That being said, I love the Metal Gear games, the characters, and surrounding lore. Definitely hope we get a good live action adaptation.
Eh I feel like a live action adaptation is pretty much pointless seeing as how metal gear is already a playable action movie so you only really seek to lose something.
@@plugshirt1762 I respect your position, but to me it’s just a different medium in which to enjoy the story. Sometimes I’m in the mood to game, sometimes I’m in the mood to just sit back an actively watch a story unfold.
And now we can’t imagine anybody other than David Hayter as snake. Everything happens for a reason
this was to play big boss, who ended up p being recast as keifer sutherland even when it ddidn't make sense in ground zeroes specifically.
Well, Kiffer Sutherland voiced for Snake too.
Na fam if Kurt voiced snake then you would say the same 😂, its just who got the role first thats it for being an iconic character David is great dont get me wrong, but u just that statement "nobody else could have been snake"

Every time i eat take a bite out of my daily lunch ham sandwich while driving my route at work i think of big trouble in little china. Every single time.
what he doeent know, is that if he took the role, his life was litterally gonna change for ever,
small example, was when keifer accepted the game award for mgs v , he said ya guys are the greatest fans ever, even if its a premier of a movie, or 24....all i ever seem to sign are snake posters".
mgs 3 was so big, everyone would jump on kurt with mgs questions when ever they saw him,
just look how michael, and arthur actors from gta v and red dead life changed after the games came out.
but i get it, at that time, games were not as big as today, and beside gamers, who were into em,
parents and actors.and everyone else didnt give enough credits to video games
The guys in GTA and Roger Clark are no where near Kurt Russell's caliber. Kurt is an actual movie star. Voicing Snake in Metal Gear Solid wouldn't have even hit his top most memorable roles if he did voice Snake.
he has been in way more famous property's then metal gear
Maybe in the US, but not worldwide. I haven't seen this guy in my life nor the movies he has been in. While MGS is iconic worldwide and one of the most popular games ever created while the movies this actor was in are not even close to that @@melon-qm7ed
There will only be one Kurt Russell. A man who was dancing in the late 60’s in a Monkee episode and became a Disney darling later on. He then became know as action star Escape in New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. Then did comedy Overboard, Captain Jack, and now a legend. His son should just bite the bullet and make Escape from Earth. Overlord was where I made the connection that he was Kurt’s son and had the swagger like his father, he showed a little Snake Plissken. I have enjoy them together in monarch legacy of monsters. Kurt isn’t done yet. If he did a sequel to the Thing or return as Snake, I’ll be down to see it. A real class act of a guy.
It would be cool to see him and David hayter recreate the cemetery scene from
Mgs4
i was literally thinking that, if kurt played bigboss in mgs4
That he even talks about it is awesome man!!
I love Kurt Russel
A lot of people are misinformed in the sense that MGS series was based on escape from New York series big boss had an eyepatch in the original NES games. The only time it was referenced in the game was a joke and MGS two because solid snakes storyline was escaping in New York in a tanker, other than that, the game aren’t similar to the movies Waze that you would say that they’re exactly alike
I love that loyalty. He said if John isn’t gonna be there, I’m not gonna be there. It’s not that he felt it was cheesy. It’s really the fact that I didn’t make this character by myself so you can’t just ask me to help y’all by myself.
Kurt missed alot
I dont need it
@@dyIanrs You're right we need Kiefer Sutherland
Kurt misses the fact that david/john snake, literally, are completely different characters with different personalities. It's not bleeding a character dry, it's the new iconic character that leaves plisken in the dust. More people know about metal gear than escape from new york at this point.
@@MemeLordCthulhuyou sound like a dumb neckbeard with an anime waifu body pillow

The true Big Boss.
I actually respect that because he'd rather grow as an actor than stay stuck being the guy who played Snake Plisken.
Kurt Russell is such an iconic actor!
Plot twist. He ends up being cast as Big Boss in the movie.
This even real?
@@grin3670 Still waiting to get greenlit. Hasn't been cast yet.
@@grin3670 Last year, Oscar Issac said they're still writing the story.
I think he would make a really good big boss or colonel Campbell in live action.
And a metal gear solid fan since 1999
Didn't get to snort with John, so no dice... Got it. In all seriousness, Kurt Russell is a legend.
Kurt and his work is iconic, but I don’t think he fully understood that metal gear solid wasn’t some cheap rip off, but something entirely new that was inspired by his characters’ energy in Escape from New York. I get his opinion on it from his perspective, but he’s misinformed.
I love Kurt Russell, and I love David Hayter, and I'm glad we got both honestly.
You can't make an iconic character instantly iconic. Only time will tell, and I would say, Solid Snake is beyond more iconic than snake pliskin.
the original movie was already iconic before metal gear even existed
Kurt crawled so Kojima could run
Snake Pliskin is way more iconic than Kojima's Great Value Snake.
Mcready was a fantastic character
Sure there's no denying that Snake in general was heavily inspired by snake pliskin, but let's be honest for a second, *"how much can we milk from that character ?"*
The answer is one of the most legendary and iconic videogame characters that made a huge impact on both gaming and on how the general perceived gaming.
Kurt missed out on a boat of money but I get it though, most of those 80s actors don't realize that gaming is a form of art much his acting but they fail to see the art behind games and it's a shame
Not really. Videogame voice actors don't get residuals.
its not that he didn't realise video games are art, its that he didn't want to do a rip of of himself
I love both movies and the games, Kurt is still in good health to play an older Big Boss.
No one knew the impact mgs would have on the world, so he probably was thinking it would be just a other video game
It only impacted the fans (like me, I love MGS). The world was not impacted. There are no stealh games and most games are incerdibly stupid and half assed.
it isn't really that influential outside of the fanbase
Every iconic character of his that he named was from a Carpenter film ❤️🤘🏻
They did create another iconic character, in a medium totally ground breaking and new that overshadows anything Kurt Russell has ever done.
Im so glad he was never cast as Snake
he was snake, "in escape from LA"and did amazing. Before metal gear solid came out.
I never put those two together for some reason until today. I knew who they were but never realized this had to be the coolest thing to bring pliskin to voice snake. I haven't played my copy yet but I'm about too and this will be better than release day
i can understand and respect Kurt, the man is a legend.
Very fortunate that this didn’t pan out, Snake got to be iconic in his own way as a result rather than just being a movie reference
It's funny because John Carpenter probably loves Metal Gear Solid. The same thing we can say about Dead Space.
Escape from L.A. is one of my favorite movies and has the coolest intro!!
I've been watching Kurt Russell for ever one of my favorite actors 😊😊😊
I would have loved a Kurt Russell voicing elder Big Boss remake of Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2.
Totally respectable and I'd imagine not being familiar with doing VA work was big part of it too.
David Hayter voice is absolutely amazing.
I'm getting the idea that John didn't understand the question at hand. He might have taken it as if Kojima was trying to make an Escape From New York video game, so Kurt wasn't on board with reprising the role if Carpenter wasn't involved. I would have clarified that Big Boss/Solid Snake have nothing to do with those films, the character might be inspired upon Snake Plissken but at the end of the day, they are different in every way.
He would of been perfect for snake I saw his movie escape from New York he was amazing
Leave David Hayter as Sanke. He did a good job playing Snake in MGS4 when u cycle through the channels when the game loads.
David Hayter is the only and best voice for Snake! I can’t wait for Delta with David Hayter voicing again for some extra stuff.
He dropped the BALL!!!! I didn't think he knows it's different, it's inspiration
Bet he wished he did it now. The first 3 MGS games are my top 3 games of my childhood. Still remember finally gettkng up the elevator at the very beginning of the game.
I love his answer to this question. His Loyalty towards John Carpenter and wanting to create a new journey instead of repeating the same story. Salute 🫡
When I was a kid Excape from NY was the best movie Ever made
Yeah as much as I love Kurt Russle, we got David Hayter and I can't imagine anybody else actually
I love the movies, i love the Metal Gear Solid games.
Snake Plissken is an iconic character in both versions. They're different but also similar. Both are badass. Same goes for both John Carpenter and Hideo Kojima.
Kurt Russell man, steady employment since ever...A Great Actor that needs more credit.
I. Love. His take on corporate bullshit. "what can we bleed off this character" would have been the exact question from executives if he accepted and he knew, Kurt Russell is a blessing
Omg... no1 else can do this like Kurt Russel. If he's not doing it? I don't want it. Bleeding this starts a new era tho. An Era we need..right now
Totally respectful position, I love Kurt Russell, but I love David Hayter too...
I love Kurt... we need more actors like him
It’s actually kinda insane how much Kurt Russell inspired; not only Solid Snake but also Casey Jones among others
I heard this story that the baseball movie Bull Durham
was developed by Kurt and Ron Shelton based on Kurt’s time playing minor league ball. The studio came in and forced Shelton to use Costner and Shelton had to break it to his good friend he was replaced.
Years later Shelton directed Kurt and Sly in Tango and Cash
Here is my 2 cents Russell as big boss would have been epic. Hader as naked was and is awesome but imagine if at the end their acting together man oh man it would have sent the whole series into massive insanity ❤❤❤. I'd have loved to seen it.
I respect Russel for not wanting to milk a character and instead create some new and unique
It's funny because Solid Snake and Big Boss have defined art a whole lot more than Snake Plisskin ever did. The 2 game Snakes pretty much proved that video games could be a vessel for great storytelling and paved the way for them to be considered an actual artistic medium.
You can still play an older big boss, Kurt. DO ITTTTT
He'd make a really good old Big Boss/Venom Snake at this age
David Hayter should be the role if there’s a live action
That would’ve been CRAZY ngl
But ofc I’m grateful for David Hayter.
I can also see this as a practical thing. Voice acting and film acting are two different disciplines. You can be good at both, but that takes even more time and dedication, something actors may not have enough of due to simple time and life constraints. If you're that committed to your craft, you don't want to turn in a lame performance. In the end, Solid Snake's role went to an experienced voice actor, and I'm glad for that. I'd hate for the Metal Gear Solid franchise to be infamous for Kurt Russell turning in an amateur performance.
Living in the past is a curse moving forward and having a open mind for opportunities is where u will build more.
And because of his decision we got soo many great movies from him and we gotten so many great Solid Snake games
If more people respected each individual creative endeavor for its own merit like Kurt does, we wouldn't be flooded with remakes and cinematic universes that extend far beyond what they should
He chose wisely.
As famous as Solid Snake and Big Boss are, they are still derivatives of Snake Plissken.
I respect him for opting out.
He would make a great old Big Boss
Imagine if they made mgs4 into a movie, I would be ok if this guy played big boss.
A lot of loyalty between actors and directors
So what he's saying is that we need John Carpenter to direct an mgs movie? I'm totally down for that.
Snake and metal gear solid will always be one of my all-time highlighted games etc to play. The man behind that was just an amazing game designer. Kurt Russell played the part perfectly. I miss the good old days
Kurt is extremely modest and talented. From childhood till now he’s always been a great actor!
Honestly, looking at the MGS franchise I can't imagine Russel voicing Snake.
Even with his Plisskin voice, it's more action movie and sonewhat cheesy. Perfect for the movies it was in and I love it, but for the serious tone and story of MGS, Hayter's voice was absolutely the perfect choice.
In another universe I would be totally psyched to see it!!!!!
I can respect his opinion/stance and because of that we got David Hayter.
Not every champion is meant for every challenge. He walked his path, and I appreciate what we got from Kurt aside.
I love Both characters, the two snakes and will love a Scape from somewhere game.
He’s still in time to play Old Snake in a MGS4 movie.
When it was announced that Keifer Sutherland would voice Snake, I instantly thought Kojima was pulling a Raiden move again, since replacing David Hayter would be a bad idea. I still don't understand, for such a big profile, why Keifer has so little dialogue in the game.
This guy would've been so perfect as Solid Snake
MGS is a masterpiece with or without you Kurt
I think he'd be a great Colonel Campbell in a live action.
Kurt Russel could’ve made a great Big Boss/Naked Snake voice
