To be honest keither Sutherland had a great voice. Sad thing is he didn't talk much. It sounds weird but Sutherlands voice is really cool XD. Actually sounds like a guy who has been in some wars

I agree, David’s issue is that he’s now off the franchise despite what he had contributed all those years and it definitely makes more sense that Big Boss was voiced differently since he’s older and sounds more bad ass in my opinion.David suits Solid Snake and the young Big Boss or Naked Snake while Kiefer is more suited for a Big Boss that has encountered many battles and etc. It would be weird if they both sound the same.
Seeing as Snake is getting older and now progressing into Big Boss, I don't mind as much that they went with a different actor, especially since he was voiced by a different actor in 4 as well. It helps highlight the differences between Big Boss and Solid Snake and show that they are two different people. If Kojima decides to remake Metal Gear 1 and 2, however, it has to be David Hayter, since he practically IS Solid Snake.
Bigbrother3465 finally someone gets it. Keifer fits young snake and really old snake. But like, snake/boss in his 50s? Doesn't really fit well, with keifer doing the role considerably better.
The video title isn't exactly fair towards Kiefer Sutherland nor to what David Hayter is saying here. Sutherland didn't decide that he would be chosen for the role, nor did Hayter complain or assert that the role would have been somehow stolen from him.

He's not stealing the voice of Solid Snake. He's doing the voice of Big Boss/Naked Snake. If he sounded like David Hayter in Snake Eater, and sounded like Richard Doyle in Guns Of The Patriots, doesn't anyone else think that they NEED to change the voice to make a decent transition between the two? I mean, Hayter and Doyle sound absolutely NOTHING like each other, except the raspy voice.
Mack Ayache The game takes place in 1984, so Solid Snake would only be 12. Unless he makes an appearance as a child soldier, I don't see him in this game. And even if he was, his voice would surely not be played by either of these 40 something guys.
yarharharpirate All aged rapidly after adulthood. The character Eli in the new trailer seems to be liquid and he looks like he's about 12, which makes sense. If they aged rapidly as children, The Werner's and the fact that Snake is a clone wouldn't have been much of a surprise.

Personally I have no issue with Kiefer Sutherland portraying Big Boss and I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with it. David Hayter is Solid Snake, no doubt about it, but he's not Big Boss. Perhaps those complaining would have preferred it if the epilogue of MGS4 was just David Hayter talking to himself in the graveyard...

Franco Rossel True, but I do like that they're differentiating between Solid Snake and Big Boss more now. They're too fundamentally different characters that are often confused easily by those who are not too familiar with the series. I suppose having Hayter as the voice actor for Naked Snake brought out the parallels between the two Snakes (both are relatively naive soldiers at the beginning of their stories), by MGSV (or even by the end of MGS3) I think that Big Boss, having founded MSF and Diamond Dogs and having become a legendary figure among all soldiers, requires an appropriate change in VA. Just my personal opinion of course.

Liquid had the dominant genes and Solidus was the perfect combination of both r.genes and d.genes, making him a perfect clone of Big Boss. SquigPie Kojima has always stated he PREFERS Hayter. JeremyJahns put it well, there has to be a point where Big Boss starts sounding more like Richard Doyle. Big Boss in this game, it's going to illustrate Naked Snake becomes VERY different to Snake as we know him, a deeper question in the series of nature versus nurture. I'm so excited for MGS5, 'return to form' doesn't even do it justice. I can't wait. Big Boss is around 49, so whilst he sounds tough still, his mannerisms and political mind, as well as leadership develop. It's still Snake though. As with the Joker and Batman, different actors, when they do it right, all hit the core elements of the characters with different portrayals. Snake = Hayter. Big Boss in Metal Gear (SNES timeframe) era = Sutherland. The fans still love Hayter. He'll probably have a cameo at the end.
If you guys know about the plot MGS5 its about how Big Boss turns into a monster from the suffering he been put through in the past , Its about Snakes transitions from good to evil , MGS5 will not have a happy ending for big boss ,there will be no resolution. so I'm not to bugged that Kiefer is playing snake In MGS5, perhaps a small part of the reason why Hayter was laid off? because Hayter's voice is the voice of a legendary Hero, not a delusional man ravaged by the past?
***** it's not because of that. Big Boss still has the same Japanese voice actor who voice acts Solid Snake. So saying that Solid Snake will be in this game is probably highly unlikely, or if he is, he will have some other voice actor, because he needs to sound young because Solid Snake was probably like 20 during Metal Gear (1995).

The thing people forget is that the reason Naked Snake and Solid Snake's voice were the same at all was because of how similar they were to each other, to the point they were practically the same person until after Peace Walker. Naked Snake was "betrayed" by his mentor, forced to handle an operation with limited information, left with a feeling of disgust to the military that appointed him, and went on to start his own independent duo with Kaz Miller via Mother Base. Just like how Solid Snake was betrayed by Big Boss, forced to handle Shadow Moses with "need to know" BS info, and ultimately left for dead literally at the end of the Shadow Moses operation.They both also had their own loves that couldn't be fulfilled (Solid left Meryl, Eva left Naked). Where Naked ends up changing is when he accepts his transition from Snake to Big Boss, a title he never got around to taking until the end of Peace Walker, when he decides to go all out, whereas Solid Snake was still conflicted with his status as a soldier for life even through MGS4. Kojima gives different voices to the clones/original for a reason. It's why Solidus has a different voice to MGS4 Big Boss, and why Liquid has a different voice to Solid Snake. Hayter's voice existed within Naked Snake when he was so similar to Solid because he essentially still had the heroic persona within him, right up until he makes his transition to the end of Peace Walker and begins his descent into madness, as hinted by the somewhat more sinister voice of Sutherland. It's not a stab in Hayter's back, it's quite the opposite. Hayer's simply the voice of the hero, and Big Boss is far from that at this point in the game's timeline.
It's amazing how much he doesn't sound like solid. I hear it sometimes but for the most part I wouldn't be able to tell that it was him if I over heard him in the grocery store
I really hope Kojima did this tactically, but having some plan to remake the original Metal Gear (David Hayter talking to himself to whole game would be weird). Because from what I saw, it was pretty rude how they just left David behind.
If it was planned tactically he would have replaced the Japanese voice actor for Big Boss too but they didn't. Getting Sutherland's monotone voice on-board was all about Kojima's star pulling power and just another example of his arrogant, self-proclaimed innovative style. Hideo Kojima does not care about MGS fans in the slightest.

I have so much respect for David Hayter. The way he handles the question is very graceful. He shows respect to the game and its developers, as well as for Sutherland, and I think that's very mature of him. He could have easily said "Metal Gear won't ever be the same now that Snake has a lower quality voice," but he instead chose to say "Metal Gear is a great series and you can rest assured that it's in quality hands."
Hayter cannot do emotions well (or realistically). His style is more 'Comic book hero'. It's worked up until now, but MGS V is all about words and emotions. Keifer was the better choice for MGS V. Hayter was the better choice for everything before V.

Keifer is pretty good for big boss older role he does show emotions but most of the time he doesn't cause the cutscenes are shorter cause of complaints of MGS4 cutscenes for being long yes david hayter was a good role but his main role was solid snake and old snake cause old snake had a age acceleration his voice still the same just a little stressed plus he smoked alot. He's a much more mythological character than Naked Snake, who is much more human. Every time he voiced Big Boss I always felt like he felt flat. Which is odd because he was great in MGS2, sucked in MGS3, ROCKED in MGS4, and then was okay in MGSPW.
David Hayter is the good Snake, this Punished Snake or Venom Snake, is a totally changed Snake, he is not the same Naked Snake from 1964 or Big Boss of 1974, he is Venom Snake a character with hatred, he will become a monster even hated by Khaz! He is not our hero anymore, so i think it's good that David dosen't voice Big Boss any more! He is Solid Snake, a hero, a hero to the end, or young and good Big Boss, not the transformed man, so im kind of ok with Kieffer Sutherland! He is the voice of evil! he is BIG BOSS!!!
Nope... You wouldn't think that if David was the one voice acting. To me it would have been a more emotional experience if David did the voice of Punished Snake, because you see such a calm, collected, and strong minded Snake suffer through anger and the loss of so much of the army you've spent quite a while earning.
Initially I was skeptical when I found out about the voice cast change but it works. David Hayter has the voice of snake, but as an older, more worn big boss, Sutherland nails it. Also yes I wish he had more lines.
Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite series of games. Played everyone of them, but while David Hayter is not involved like this, I wont touch them again. David is Snake, and true fans will know, he is Big Boss as well.
That's kinda stupid imo. It's not like Hayter is the creator of the game. The new gameplay itself is super awesome. But I have to say I don't think Sutherland did a good job in Ground Zeroes.. It sounds boring. And he's suppose to be this awesome actor.. I'd take Hayter back any day.

Something that has been the same since i was a small boy playing the games. It is disrespectful to Hayter and the fans of the game. I don't get you guys, everything we've seen so far has been beyond acceptable. "Kaz, I'm already a demon." His voice embodies Snake's character as well or better than Hayter's would for this iteration, since snake is much more withdrawn and "punished" at this point in his life and wouldn't speak as deliberately as he did in 3 and PW. And Sutherland can still yell when he needs to. The whole package. But I disagree that he would've fit in Snake's role in 3.

Keifer was a great choice, he was voicing a different Snake. Hayter's voice is almost cartoony and exaggerated. Nothing against his voice as Old Snake but I really think Sutherland was the right pick.
Kyle Hallman to me hayter's snake was just more distinct sounding. Sure, Keifer sounds good, and a lot more realistic from what I've heard, but it's not the snake I really grew up with I guess
Its been a few years since I last played MGS 3(Never played PW) and man it feels so wrong hearing Hayter as Big Boss. When Kiefer isn't acting as a mute he's legitimately perfect for the role. Shame he wasn't utilized properly in TPP
I love MGS and I was gutted to hear about this but Kiefer Sutherland is definitely up for the task. In Call of Duty: World at War he did an excellent job playing Sergeant Roebuck, I think he'll provide a fresh perspective on Snake.

Yes i have heard the voice and i think it sounds good. Not as good as Hayter but still good. Using kiefer sutherland to get a bigger audience would be stupid since Hayter is one of gamings most well known actors and sutherland isn't really that big of an actor. My guess is simply that Kojima tought that Hayter's voice didn't fit for an older and more worn out big boss. Yes he played old snake but snake wasn't really old, Just he's body. I'm down with sutherland playing snake, I think people should calm down, change is not a bad thing, and sutherland is a good actor he's won awards and stuff so I dunno clearly he has done some great performances...I think people should start thinking a little more positively; I loved Hayter as snake, he did an amazing job with it, but who knows! Sutherland as Big Boss might be pretty damn good as well!
David's right in saying that the fans will eventually get over the fact that Sutherland's voicing Big Boss now, I'm a huge fanboy of Metal Gear, so I was outraged when I heard David wasn't going to voice Him, but as long as he comes back in the end as the voice for Solid Snake, I'll be happy.
there are a few things that could happen, mind you: solid snake doesn't come back solid snake comes back but with a younger voice solid snake comes back with david hayter being the voice again. i'm hoping for #3 as well but... fuck kojima for doing what he did to hayter! that was completely unnecessary (unless there was something behind the scenes that we don't know about)

In my honest opinion, Sutherland did an Amazing job with MGSV. I was shocked there wasn't much more dialog. I feel the only reason why Hayter was kept for MGS3 and PW was because of how well the voice fit.
One of the reasons they changed his voice was because of Konami Los Angeles. A studio that opened in LA to help with the new MGS series.. One of the fuck head's over there was like: "hey, let's change snake voice" bla bla bla.. Maybe there was some money involved, we don't know or some personal feelings... But one of the main reasons is because of that gay fucking studio over there..

Alright, alright, you must be aware of something. Because the author of the video is wrong. Solid Snake is - Solid Snake. Big Boss is NOT the same as Solid Snake, and Big Boss happens to be the main character of MGS5. There may be many reasons of why David was not involved, but you also must be aware that Big Boss is 40 years old in this game, and that his voice changes over time. Just like at the end of MGS4. Big Boss' voice is different from Snake's. This is not a conspiracy, everyone. Let's not be ridiculous and panic over this. It would've been great it David would've done Big Boss' voice in this game, but Kiefer will do fine either way. I can't wait for it to come out.
You make it sound like David isn't the voice of Snake because it's a different Snake in the game. You played as Big Boss in MG3 and David was still the voice actor.

So your argument about them sounding different is wrong, because when Big Boss is around the age he is in MGS5, it's not far off the age that he is in MGS3, and in both games, he is voiced by Hayter, who by the nature of him being the same person... Makes the characters sound the same... That is no reason for Hayter to not do the voice acting. It's an utterly illogical argument. The reason Big Boss's voice is different at the end of MGS4 is because we haven't seen "Old Big Boss" before, and if he was voiced by David Hayter as well, it would just sound like Solid Snake was talking to himself and it'd get confusing and weird.
Bullet4MyEnemy Actors voice different characters in the same scene all the time. The fact that Big Boss was not played by David in MGS 4 means that at some point in his life Big Boss's voice diverges greatly from Solid Snake's voice. Having a different actor will help Bridge the gap between the old and young voices. Kiefer is also a more experienced on screen actor and will be better suited to the job of motion capture.

The ground zeroes prologue takes place 1 year after peace walker. It just doesn't me sense for his voice to completely change in just a year. It would make sense for his voice to change after the 9 year coma and be David just for the prologue and then Kiefer afterwards. I'm not really mad that Kiefer is the new VA, it's just that the transition between to 2 voices makes no sense.

To leave him out is like making another pointless Raiden game. The mere fact that Kojima doesn't care about the fans very strong opinions on this matter. Means he should have done what he's said he was multi times now and quite making the series. But his other projects fail to live up to all he is known for..... MGS.

Solid Snake isn't in this game. So David Hayter isn't either. I've honestly come to not care about that. I just feel people will forever hate this game, lose all respect for Kojima, when in fact this game plays really well. It feels fluid to me, and honestly I haven't had this much fun sneaking around in a long time. I'm happy to play the 5 missions or so that were set out in MGS 5. Kiefer Sutherland did a good job on Big boss, and even though the storyline was short, I don't doubt the Phantom pain will be brilliant. Feel free to not buy it, or blatantly hate a game because of a design decision. But just know, it is extremely hard to take opinions like that seriously.
How old were you in 1998? I'v e been with this game since then and still owe every game during it's release. Own every strategy guide, LE game as well. Point is, I am fully aware of what you typed out about Kojima. But the man that brought the character we all know today to life is and will always be David Hayter. Like it or not. The series is going down in flames ever since after MGS4. With Kojima saying he is done ( multi times ). With a failing bad Raiden spin off game. Now with this demo game with some other actor. It's completely lost site and that is why Kojima has even passed it off to "other" development companies after MGS4. Look at the reviews all over the net about this 2 hour $30 demo.

I mean snakes voice itself is a flipping classic. that being said, I still do also agree with thomas in stating the game is a stand alone game. completely innovative in its time of release and arguably even to date. but its hard to know what mgs would have been like today without david, anyway, ill be getting ground zero and phantom pain so happy days all in all lol
I played Ground Zeroes and we don't really hear a ton of Snake. Of the few lines I heard I wasn't blown away, including trailers. Seems a little passionless in a lot of what he delivered. Hayter read a lot of great and some really bad lines but always delivered them excellently. His version of Snake always be iconic.

I am really Ok with Kiefer Sutherland doing the voice of Big Boss, because one he's one of my favorite action actors, and two because there must be a clear division between Solid Snake and Big Boss, becacuse altough they're practically the same person, they have different ideologis and perspectives, and with the change of voice that could be much more deepend, becasue the are one,but not the same. I also hope that after the ending credits of the game, there will be conversation between Big Boss and Solid Snake, that would be sweet!!!

That's why they casted another actor to do the role (in the japanese version, the voice of Big Boss is the father of Snake's voice actor in Japan). It's ok if you give the example of twins been voiced by the same actress, but Big Boss and Snake are from two different generations, so they should sound different, as Big Boss' ages. And if you put the example of twins and that Snake has the same voice as Big Boss, then why Liquid's voice is different?? In that logic, he should talk like Big Boss, and also Solidus should talk like Big Boss. And what would that mean? David Hayter doing different accents for the voices, and at the end, that would had sound ridiculous. Why do they changed the voice? For people to view them as different characters.
My brother aws 26 years old, and my father is 63 years old, they were the same person physically speaking, but they didn't sound the same way. And besides, I believe that they explain in MGS 4, that both Liquid and Solid are not 100 percent clones of Big Boss, since the egg they fertilized was of a japanes woman. And in MGS 2 it's clearly said that Solidus is the perfect clone of Big Boss, so he should sound like Solid Snake or kinda isn't it?

Kiefer gets a lot of hate he doesn't deserve. He delivered the role very well, however little lines he had. I really like David's snake but the funny thing is that it does sound a little bit "cartoon-y" or "comic-y". It suited well in the older games and even my personal favorite Peace Walker, which even utilized animated drawings as cutscenes, but honestly, I couldn't really imagine it in MGS V which was almost like a movie with a grim tone and lingering dark motifs.
I'm personally disgusted they got rid of Hayter. As a long time fan of the games, MGS5 doesn't feel like a MGS game. The face and voice change are too much, to where it feels like new character entirely. The story arcs around Big Boss and his legacy. The Sons of Big Boss trying to recreate his image of The Boss' dream, and how Solid Snake unintentionally resembles, becomes, and surpasses Big Boss through selflessness and duty. The one clone who was designed to be the least like Big Boss becomes his doppelganger - So it makes complete sense for him to have the same voice and appearance. Hayter IS Snake, and the only way I think this can be justified is if there are plans to remake the original Meta Gear games, and they're trying to avoid Hayter conversing to himself and utter confusion from the players.

I dont understand how anyone can prefer him over Sutherland. His Snake voice sounds cool, and is very nostalgic and familiar, but its very one note and exaggerated, especially in todays gaming industry where games are demanding much better voice actors, and actors in general(what with face and motion capture growing more popular). I'd rather the series grow for the better than hang on to the old just for nostalgias sake.
I don't have a seething hatred over this change, and even if the voice proves kinda unfitting for Snake, I doubt it will ruin the game experience. Sutherland is a brilliant actor, he can cover for a lot if it comes down to that. But I definitely understand people having hard time over this change, Sutherland might be better actor and so forth, but having the talent doesn't make you a better fit for every character. It's not just nostalgia, Hayter's "one note" voice works perfectly as a sort of 80's corny action movie hero, which has been very fitting to the main character of this series so far. Who knows, judging from trailers MGSV seems to be trying more serious and emotional route and less corniness with the new iteration, so Sutherland might actually prove to be a better pick in the end. Time will tell.
truwar23 What the fuck is wrong you? He was just stating facts. MGSV has a MUCH darker and more serious tone and theme than the light hearted cartoonish tone that PW had. David Hayter's exaggerated anime like performance won't fit in MGSV at all. I'd have been fine if he kept the same acting quality he had in MGS1, 2 and 3, but it had been going down hill since 4 and you know it.
David has taken this pretty humbly, which is good on him; he's a cool dude. I have a feeling that he'll probably play The Phantom Pain if only just to see how Sutherland takes on Big Boss. Haytar's really cool to me because he actually played the games he helped create.

Has anyone considered that perhaps hayter isn't playing the voice of punished snake/big boss because at some point in the future, either phantom pain or a later game, solid and big boss will encounter each other. He might be saved to voice solid in that encounter instead of big boss.
I genuinely think Kiefer's career gave him an advantage over Hayter's voice acting, so he's better. But David is Snake. Even if he makes some errors (In PW and other MGS games his voice cracks up a bit during some cutscenes), I think his voice fits Snake better, even if Sutherland's a bit better.
Having finished the main mission of Ground Zeroes all I can say is I really miss David Hayter already. Kiefer Sutherland delivers a regular action dude type of character where David Hayter had a funny gooffy side to his Snake/Big Boss. I just hope Hideo Kojima isn't going to dump that humorous side for a gritty and more violent MGS experience. And I still wonder why that sudden change of actor?

I agree, David’s issue is that he’s now off the franchise despite what he had contributed all those years and it definitely makes more sense that Big Boss was voiced differently since he’s older and sounds more bad ass in my opinion.David suits Solid Snake and the young Big Boss or Naked Snake while Kiefer is more suited for a Big Boss that has encountered many battles and etc. It would be weird if they both sound the same.
Seeing as Snake is getting older and now progressing into Big Boss, I don't mind as much that they went with a different actor, especially since he was voiced by a different actor in 4 as well. It helps highlight the differences between Big Boss and Solid Snake and show that they are two different people. If Kojima decides to remake Metal Gear 1 and 2, however, it has to be David Hayter, since he practically IS Solid Snake.

Personally I have no issue with Kiefer Sutherland portraying Big Boss and I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with it. David Hayter is Solid Snake, no doubt about it, but he's not Big Boss. Perhaps those complaining would have preferred it if the epilogue of MGS4 was just David Hayter talking to himself in the graveyard...

Franco Rossel True, but I do like that they're differentiating between Solid Snake and Big Boss more now. They're too fundamentally different characters that are often confused easily by those who are not too familiar with the series. I suppose having Hayter as the voice actor for Naked Snake brought out the parallels between the two Snakes (both are relatively naive soldiers at the beginning of their stories), by MGSV (or even by the end of MGS3) I think that Big Boss, having founded MSF and Diamond Dogs and having become a legendary figure among all soldiers, requires an appropriate change in VA. Just my personal opinion of course.

SquigPie Kojima has always stated he PREFERS Hayter. JeremyJahns put it well, there has to be a point where Big Boss starts sounding more like Richard Doyle. Big Boss in this game, it's going to illustrate Naked Snake becomes VERY different to Snake as we know him, a deeper question in the series of nature versus nurture. I'm so excited for MGS5, 'return to form' doesn't even do it justice. I can't wait. Big Boss is around 49, so whilst he sounds tough still, his mannerisms and political mind, as well as leadership develop. It's still Snake though. As with the Joker and Batman, different actors, when they do it right, all hit the core elements of the characters with different portrayals. Snake = Hayter. Big Boss in Metal Gear (SNES timeframe) era = Sutherland. The fans still love Hayter. He'll probably have a cameo at the end.

the reason richard doyle voiced big boss in mgs4 was because it would be ridiculous for hayter to have a conversation with himself for that scene.
the main reason for the change was because they needed a visual actor for big bosses facial movements to make use of the fox engines capabilities , Kojima said himself there will much less dialogue than any other mgs game so even though Kiefer will be voicing snake we wont hear very much out of him.

I personally find it hard to see where hayter could return even for just a quick cameo in mgs5 because Kojima would have to go way too far into the future to make hayters voice fit solid snake
The thing people forget is that the reason Naked Snake and Solid Snake's voice were the same at all was because of how similar they were to each other, to the point they were practically the same person until after Peace Walker. Naked Snake was "betrayed" by his mentor, forced to handle an operation with limited information, left with a feeling of disgust to the military that appointed him, and went on to start his own independent duo with Kaz Miller via Mother Base. Just like how Solid Snake was betrayed by Big Boss, forced to handle Shadow Moses with "need to know" BS info, and ultimately left for dead literally at the end of the Shadow Moses operation.They both also had their own loves that couldn't be fulfilled (Solid left Meryl, Eva left Naked). Where Naked ends up changing is when he accepts his transition from Snake to Big Boss, a title he never got around to taking until the end of Peace Walker, when he decides to go all out, whereas Solid Snake was still conflicted with his status as a soldier for life even through MGS4.
Kojima gives different voices to the clones/original for a reason. It's why Solidus has a different voice to MGS4 Big Boss, and why Liquid has a different voice to Solid Snake. Hayter's voice existed within Naked Snake when he was so similar to Solid because he essentially still had the heroic persona within him, right up until he makes his transition to the end of Peace Walker and begins his descent into madness, as hinted by the somewhat more sinister voice of Sutherland.
It's not a stab in Hayter's back, it's quite the opposite. Hayer's simply the voice of the hero, and Big Boss is far from that at this point in the game's timeline.
All he needs to do is comb his hair back and wear a bandana and he might actually look like a real life Solid Snake.
It's amazing how much he doesn't sound like solid. I hear it sometimes but for the most part I wouldn't be able to tell that it was him if I over heard him in the grocery store

If it was planned tactically he would have replaced the Japanese voice actor for Big Boss too but they didn't. Getting Sutherland's monotone voice on-board was all about Kojima's star pulling power and just another example of his arrogant, self-proclaimed innovative style. Hideo Kojima does not care about MGS fans in the slightest.

I have so much respect for David Hayter. The way he handles the question is very graceful. He shows respect to the game and its developers, as well as for Sutherland, and I think that's very mature of him. He could have easily said "Metal Gear won't ever be the same now that Snake has a lower quality voice," but he instead chose to say "Metal Gear is a great series and you can rest assured that it's in quality hands."
Hayter cannot do emotions well (or realistically). His style is more 'Comic book hero'.
It's worked up until now, but MGS V is all about words and emotions.
Keifer was the better choice for MGS V.
Hayter was the better choice for everything before V.

Keifer is pretty good for big boss older role he does show emotions but most of the time he doesn't cause the cutscenes are shorter cause of complaints of MGS4 cutscenes for being long yes david hayter was a good role but his main role was solid snake and old snake cause old snake had a age acceleration his voice still the same just a little stressed plus he smoked alot. Anyway they all cant sound the same as big boss cause big boss is the original genes so unfortunately he will have a normal human body that will age and change his voice vocals at young age to mid age to old age makes since why keifer has the voice plus i love davud hayters voice but i hate to hear the same voice everytime even when big boss starts to ger old leading up to MGS4 big old boss it shows his voice changing other wise it wouldn't make since why his voice turned like that in MGS4 ending also fans need to calm down about the voice of snake cause they should be worrying about the game in general if they have it there way they be left with less excitement and a shitty game so it's best this way for keifer to voice big boss

SuperSillyKitten I wouldn't say he isn't capable of emotions. I just think that's the way that Solid Snake was written, and it worked beautifully. He's a much more mythological character than Naked Snake, who is much more human.
Every time he voiced Big Boss I always felt like he felt flat. Which is odd because he was great in MGS2, sucked in MGS3, ROCKED in MGS4, and then was okay in MGSPW.

He is not our hero anymore, so i think it's good that David dosen't voice Big Boss any more! Nope... You wouldn't think that if David was the one voice acting. To me it would have been a more emotional experience if David did the voice of Punished Snake, because you see such a calm, collected, and strong minded Snake suffer through anger and the loss of so much of the army you've spent quite a while earning.
But then, during the events of MGS4 his voice changes back to "good" again. Great!
Initially I was skeptical when I found out about the voice cast change but it works. David Hayter has the voice of snake, but as an older, more worn big boss, Sutherland nails it. Also yes I wish he had more lines.
Now that i pay attention to the voice and with the ending of the game keifer makes a lot of sense

Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite series of games. Played everyone of them, but while David Hayter is not involved like this, I wont touch them again. David is Snake, and true fans will know, he is Big Boss as well.
That's kinda stupid imo. It's not like Hayter is the creator of the game. The new gameplay itself is super awesome. But I have to say I don't think Sutherland did a good job in Ground Zeroes.. It sounds boring. And he's suppose to be this awesome actor.. I'd take Hayter back any day.

Something that has been the same since i was a small boy playing the games. I don't get you guys, everything we've seen so far has been beyond acceptable. "Kaz, I'm already a demon." His voice embodies Snake's character as well or better than Hayter's would for this iteration, since snake is much more withdrawn and "punished" at this point in his life and wouldn't speak as deliberately as he did in 3 and PW. And Sutherland can still yell when he needs to. The whole package. But I disagree that he would've fit in Snake's role in 3.

Keifer was a great choice, he was voicing a different Snake. Hayter's voice is almost cartoony and exaggerated. Nothing against his voice as Old Snake but I really think Sutherland was the right pick.

Its been a few years since I last played MGS 3(Never played PW) and man it feels so wrong hearing Hayter as Big Boss. When Kiefer isn't acting as a mute he's legitimately perfect for the role. Shame he wasn't utilized properly in TPP

I love MGS and I was gutted to hear about this but Kiefer Sutherland is definitely up for the task. In Call of Duty: World at War he did an excellent job playing Sergeant Roebuck, I think he'll provide a fresh perspective on Snake.
Kiefer Sutherland isn't stealing Solid Snake he is becoming Big Boss which makes sense. David Hayter never really was Big Boss to begin with, he didn't voice Big Boss in MGS4 because that would have been ridiculous. They needed a new voice actor because Big Boss and Solid Snake can't have the same voice. (Well I guess they could but that would be silly.)
Technically, yes, Hayter was Big Boss to begin with. Snake Eater, Peace Walker, Portable Ops. Those were ALL Hayter. Also, tell me why the Japanese voice actor is the same guy.

That question has been answered thousands of times on so many comment sections but people who still cry over the loss of Hayter don't seem to listen. It's a petty and weak argument. You can't tell a genuinely serious and cinematic story with a voice like Hayter's, for one he doesn't have the sufficient acting talent, always one-dimensional performances, and also he just simply sounds cartoony. It's hard to take him serious in the more darker and realistic approach they're going for now.

The way they tell stories in japan, it doesn't really matter if the voice is over the top like the japanese Snake sounds for example, because whatever stories they tell, serious or not serious, they still use an over the top voice, so it doesn't matter.
Err well sure the Japanese audience is looking for totally different things but the thing is those Japanese voice actors are totally different so they can voice old man better than some English Voice actor.
But of course David Hayter will always be Big Boss to me.

The reason they changed the voice actor was because Hideo wanted Snake and Big Boss to sound different and he also wanted an older, more experienced actor for the role. I'm 100% fine with Kiefer as Big Boss/Punished Snake.

Yes i have heard the voice and i think it sounds good. Not as good as Hayter but still good. Using kiefer sutherland to get a bigger audience would be stupid since Hayter is one of gamings most well known actors and sutherland isn't really that big of an actor. My guess is simply that Kojima tought that Hayter's voice didn't fit for an older and more worn out big boss. Yes he played old snake but snake wasn't really old, Just he's body. I'm down with sutherland playing snake, I think people should calm down, change is not a bad thing, and sutherland is a good actor he's won awards and stuff so I dunno clearly he has done some great performances...I think people should start thinking a little more positively; I loved Hayter as snake, he did an amazing job with it, but who knows! Sutherland as Big Boss might be pretty damn good as well!
David's right in saying that the fans will eventually get over the fact that Sutherland's voicing Big Boss now, I'm a huge fanboy of Metal Gear, so I was outraged when I heard David wasn't going to voice Him, but as long as he comes back in the end as the voice for Solid Snake, I'll be happy.

In my honest opinion, Sutherland did an Amazing job with MGSV. I was shocked there wasn't much more dialog. I feel the only reason why Hayter was kept for MGS3 and PW was because of how well the voice fit.

One of the reasons they changed his voice was because of Konami Los Angeles. A studio that opened in LA to help with the new MGS series.. One of the fuck head's over there was like: "hey, let's change snake voice" bla bla bla.. Maybe there was some money involved, we don't know or some personal feelings... But one of the main reasons is because of that gay fucking studio over there..

Alright, alright, you must be aware of something. Because the author of the video is wrong. Solid Snake is - Solid Snake. Big Boss is NOT the same as Solid Snake, and Big Boss happens to be the main character of MGS5. There may be many reasons of why David was not involved, but you also must be aware that Big Boss is 40 years old in this game, and that his voice changes over time. Just like at the end of MGS4. Big Boss' voice is different from Snake's. This is not a conspiracy, everyone. Let's not be ridiculous and panic over this. It would've been great it David would've done Big Boss' voice in this game, but Kiefer will do fine either way. I can't wait for it to come out.

That is no reason for Hayter to not do the voice acting. It's an utterly illogical argument.
The reason Big Boss's voice is different at the end of MGS4 is because we haven't seen "Old Big Boss" before, and if he was voiced by David Hayter as well, it would just sound like Solid Snake was talking to himself and it'd get confusing and weird.
Bullet4MyEnemy Actors voice different characters in the same scene all the time. The fact that Big Boss was not played by David in MGS 4 means that at some point in his life Big Boss's voice diverges greatly from Solid Snake's voice. Having a different actor will help Bridge the gap between the old and young voices. Kiefer is also a more experienced on screen actor and will be better suited to the job of motion capture.

The ground zeroes prologue takes place 1 year after peace walker. It just doesn't me sense for his voice to completely change in just a year. It would make sense for his voice to change after the 9 year coma and be David just for the prologue and then Kiefer afterwards. I'm not really mad that Kiefer is the new VA, it's just that the transition between to 2 voices makes no sense.
Still nowhere near as bad as the voice change for the Splinter Cell series.

To leave him out is like making another pointless Raiden game. The mere fact that Kojima doesn't care about the fans very strong opinions on this matter. Means he should have done what he's said he was multi times now and quite making the series. But his other projects fail to live up to all he is known for..... MGS.
ZBlacktt I honestly just don't like this argument. To say that David Hayter is what made MGS a game is just not fair to Kojima. The type of gameplay makes the game part of what it is. Solid Snake isn't in this game. So David Hayter isn't either. I've honestly come to not care about that. I just feel people will forever hate this game, lose all respect for Kojima, when in fact this game plays really well. It feels fluid to me, and honestly I haven't had this much fun sneaking around in a long time. I'm happy to play the 5 missions or so that were set out in MGS 5. Kiefer Sutherland did a good job on Big boss, and even though the storyline was short, I don't doubt the Phantom pain will be brilliant. Feel free to not buy it, or blatantly hate a game because of a design decision. But just know, it is extremely hard to take opinions like that seriously.
How old were you in 1998? I'v e been with this game since then and still owe every game during it's release. Own every strategy guide, LE game as well. Point is, I am fully aware of what you typed out about Kojima. But the man that brought the character we all know today to life is and will always be David Hayter. Like it or not. The series is going down in flames ever since after MGS4. With Kojima saying he is done ( multi times ). With a failing bad Raiden spin off game. Now with this demo game with some other actor. It's completely lost site and that is why Kojima has even passed it off to "other" development companies after MGS4. Look at the reviews all over the net about this 2 hour $30 demo.

I mean snakes voice itself is a flipping classic. that being said, I still do also agree with thomas in stating the game is a stand alone game. completely innovative in its time of release and arguably even to date. but its hard to know what mgs would have been like today without david, anyway, ill be getting ground zero and phantom pain so happy days all in all lol

Of the few lines I heard I wasn't blown away, including trailers. Seems a little passionless in a lot of what he delivered.
Hayter read a lot of great and some really bad lines but always delivered them excellently. His version of Snake always be iconic.

I am really Ok with Kiefer Sutherland doing the voice of Big Boss, because one he's one of my favorite action actors, and two because there must be a clear division between Solid Snake and Big Boss, becacuse altough they're practically the same person, they have different ideologis and perspectives, and with the change of voice that could be much more deepend, becasue the are one,but not the same. I also hope that after the ending credits of the game, there will be conversation between Big Boss and Solid Snake, that would be sweet!!!

It's ok if you give the example of twins been voiced by the same actress, but Big Boss and Snake are from two different generations, so they should sound different, as Big Boss' ages. And if you put the example of twins and that Snake has the same voice as Big Boss, then why Liquid's voice is different?? In that logic, he should talk like Big Boss, and also Solidus should talk like Big Boss. And what would that mean? David Hayter doing different accents for the voices, and at the end, that would had sound ridiculous. Why do they changed the voice? For people to view them as different characters.
My brother aws 26 years old, and my father is 63 years old, they were the same person physically speaking, but they didn't sound the same way. And besides, I believe that they explain in MGS 4, that both Liquid and Solid are not 100 percent clones of Big Boss, since the egg they fertilized was of a japanes woman. And in MGS 2 it's clearly said that Solidus is the perfect clone of Big Boss, so he should sound like Solid Snake or kinda isn't it?

Kiefer gets a lot of hate he doesn't deserve. He delivered the role very well, however little lines he had. I really like David's snake but the funny thing is that it does sound a little bit "cartoon-y" or "comic-y". It suited well in the older games and even my personal favorite Peace Walker, which even utilized animated drawings as cutscenes, but honestly, I couldn't really imagine it in MGS V which was almost like a movie with a grim tone and lingering dark motifs.

Kiefer just doesn't sound right when I am looking at Big Boss talking, I would prefer even that Kiefer did a Hayter impression of Big Boss.
I'm personally disgusted they got rid of Hayter. As a long time fan of the games, MGS5 doesn't feel like a MGS game. The face and voice change are too much, to where it feels like new character entirely.
The story arcs around Big Boss and his legacy. The Sons of Big Boss trying to recreate his image of The Boss' dream, and how Solid Snake unintentionally resembles, becomes, and surpasses Big Boss through selflessness and duty. The one clone who was designed to be the least like Big Boss becomes his doppelganger - So it makes complete sense for him to have the same voice and appearance.
Hayter IS Snake, and the only way I think this can be justified is if there are plans to remake the original Meta Gear games, and they're trying to avoid Hayter conversing to himself and utter confusion from the players.

David Quezada I agree, in Big Boss' first games the voice should have been different.. maybe even David Hayter still, to have similarity, but different. Since it wasn't, I thought it was crazy to change his voice now.

I dont understand how anyone can prefer him over Sutherland. His Snake voice sounds cool, and is very nostalgic and familiar, but its very one note and exaggerated, especially in todays gaming industry where games are demanding much better voice actors, and actors in general(what with face and motion capture growing more popular). I'd rather the series grow for the better than hang on to the old just for nostalgias sake.

I don't have a seething hatred over this change, and even if the voice proves kinda unfitting for Snake, I doubt it will ruin the game experience. Sutherland is a brilliant actor, he can cover for a lot if it comes down to that.
But I definitely understand people having hard time over this change, Sutherland might be better actor and so forth, but having the talent doesn't make you a better fit for every character. It's not just nostalgia, Hayter's "one note" voice works perfectly as a sort of 80's corny action movie hero, which has been very fitting to the main character of this series so far.
Who knows, judging from trailers MGSV seems to be trying more serious and emotional route and less corniness with the new iteration, so Sutherland might actually prove to be a better pick in the end. Time will tell.
truwar23 What the fuck is wrong you? He was just stating facts. MGSV has a MUCH darker and more serious tone and theme than the light hearted cartoonish tone that PW had. David Hayter's exaggerated anime like performance won't fit in MGSV at all. I'd have been fine if he kept the same acting quality he had in MGS1, 2 and 3, but it had been going down hill since 4 and you know it.
Its hard to argue for or against it when the game isnt out for anyone to judge.

David has taken this pretty humbly, which is good on him; he's a cool dude. I have a feeling that he'll probably play The Phantom Pain if only just to see how Sutherland takes on Big Boss. Haytar's really cool to me because he actually played the games he helped create.

Keifer Sutherland's Snake voice sounds like a cigar smoking, jaded, withered warrior. That's exactly what Big Boss is.

Has anyone considered that perhaps hayter isn't playing the voice of punished snake/big boss because at some point in the future, either phantom pain or a later game, solid and big boss will encounter each other. He might be saved to voice solid in that encounter instead of big boss.

I genuinely think Kiefer's career gave him an advantage over Hayter's voice acting, so he's better. But David is Snake. Even if he makes some errors (In PW and other MGS games his voice cracks up a bit during some cutscenes), I think his voice fits Snake better, even if Sutherland's a bit better.
but "the cracking in his voice" and everything about davids voice acting IS what makes snake; it just feels natural to hear it like that
Having finished the main mission of Ground Zeroes all I can say is I really miss David Hayter already. Kiefer Sutherland delivers a regular action dude type of character where David Hayter had a funny gooffy side to his Snake/Big Boss. I just hope Hideo Kojima isn't going to dump that humorous side for a gritty and more violent MGS experience.
And I still wonder why that sudden change of actor?
I love the title of this video considering that David Hayter was nothing but a class act in his response to such an obvious question. Rock on Snake. It's all about "language" and "change", after all.
