Heya. I'm hallfway through rn but I wanted to tell you: Kratos is basically calm now. He only uses the power he needs to win. Kratos in the old games is basically Kratos here when He's using spartan rage. So that's why he dislocated Thors chin in the beginning when he got angry. He's trying to fight his own rage, because all that brought him in the past was pain and suffering. (That's a kind of canon way to think why Kratos is not just pummeling everyone he sees into the ground and you can have fun playing the game) xD Many fans say "If Kratos was still angry the aesir had no fighting chance and they are lucky kratos is how he is now" I can't really say if that's true or not, but I like to think so xD
The thing with god of war is that there are more dialogues and important ones being played during the gameplay and not only the cutscenes so you are missing a few interactions
not only that but all the side quests are considered canon for both games so you may end up being confused when they talk about characters not mentioned in the main story (like the fact Kratos and Atreus uncorrupted the valkyries)

I've done some editing exercises with all the God of War main games recently, aiming to cut them to a properly paced cinematic experience. It was fun on GoW 1-3. Basically all story and character development happens when there's something worthwile on screen. As soon as I got to GoW 2018 though, it became a slog. Scrubbing through my gameplay material, I had to pay more attention to not miss dialogue, because it was much harder to notice, as they are talking while walking so much...Which also leads to the next problem: Pacing. You can only have so much walking and talking without it becoming boring. So it's taking more time to find the useful material, and taking more time to filter it, deciding what to keep. I wouldn't have expected it first, because when just playing the newer GoW entries, they felt very cinematic to me. What to keep depends what kind of video you intend to create: A full story collection video, or a movie

I love how Odin's manipulation starts right out of the gate. Thor shows us that he has addiction issues by only smelling the mead and smearing it on Mjolnir, everything but drinking it really. As soon as Odin comes in, he shows his real nature by calling Magni and Modi useless right in front of their father (note how Thor turns away) and calls attention the the cup as well as saying Thor is "no fun any more". He's trying to manipulate Thor into breaking his sobriety because he's easier to control when drunk and that's all Odin cares about.
A detail that got cut out from your God of War 2018 video was that the World Serpent told Atreus that he looked familiar. The snake that Atreus and Angrboda put the soul into is the World Serpent
23:50 strong reaction because while Kratos was a general in the past, he was tricked by Ares and he killed his own family with the blades of chaos. Hence why he hid his blades under the house in the 1st game.
He isn't struggling because he's older , He isn't filled eith rage and hate 24/7 and holding back , In this case he's actually stronger. But he's a father again.
"In this case he's actually stronger" He's not stronger. In fact, he's significantly weaker. But yes, old age _shouldn't_ matter to Greek gods. Norse Gods have to consume Idunn's apples in order to not die of old age though.
People do like playing as Atreus but this particular ironwood segment kind of goes on for 20-30 mins without the player being info dumped without anything to do outsife of riding a yak so it took a lot of people out of it. Other than this dream, the atreus levels are well paced and a breath of fresh air to play
I hope you haven’t already watched everything and are uploading after the fact; this particular cutscene collection you’re reacting to cuts a lot more than it should in terms of story, the ultimate impact, in particular when Kratos talks about what happened to his first child.
I know there’s alot of complaints about missing some dialogue in the video but I’m still enjoying the insight you offer through the POV of a professional. I’ve played the game twice and it’s almost like seeing it for the first time through not just your fresh reaction but your cinematic analysis.
Im glad you are going back to play the games. The comments are right, this play through you are watching is giving you THE MAIN STORY cutscenes only leaving alot of filler info out, pieces that connect the story through character dialogue while playing. One of the big ones are the boat rides or the moments on the world tree in between relms. You will enjoy both games (wouldnt mind watchig you play that either)
In a cinema standpoint, in the first game they made Baldur weak and scrawny looking so Kratos looks like a Giant towering over him, but when Thor a real half Giant show up now, he is BIG and makes Kratos the weak and scrawny character in the frame mirroring the old scene with him now being towered on from Thor as the camera lingers over Thor looking down rather than showing us Kratos' view of him looking up to Thor
@Loner_Mike98 not downscaled. They literally brought in a BIGGER guy to play him :P but even at his original 7ft he's smaller than Thor. Doesn't mean he's weaker, just smaller in size which is okay my guy
@@farhanchoksi98 I grew up playing these games never said he was weaker he’s actually waaaaay stronger than his god of war 3 counterpart and he was downscaled to judges height so the movement could match the motion capture better.
2:11:48 This is implied to be the birth of Jörmungandr, I like how this game takes creative liberties with how Loki’s children are created, because the World Serpent is Loki & Angrboda’s child in regular mythos, so in this game they decided that Atreus and Angrboda were going to put the giants Soul into that snake, creating Jörmungandr together
The thing about Faye's theme is that when you hear it, either Kratos or Atreus is actually hearing it in the game. So they actually hear it when it is played. Also, whenever Faye is mentioned, the axe always comes into frame immediately after.
Sad you used this video. It has cut many content and dialogue. Appreciate the effort you put into making these videos, though. Later in the video, I am glad that you have developed inyerest in playing these games. You could have done gameplay videos, the fans have infinite patience for god of war content. Hope you have a blast playing the games yourself.
i really liked him breaking down the freya atrius scene at the campfire i never thought about the fire and its lighting showing her empty vs her heart filling with heat and who she was before in the last game before
I was excited for the video so skipped the sponsor, thought I should give something because (even though I don’t do cinematography and film making) I love the tips and the explanations! Thank you for these, especially some of my favourite games
1:53:28 Angrboda is a giant, Loki's first wife and mother of his 3 monster children: Fenrir, the direwolf, Jormungand, the serpent that circles the world and Hela, the goddess of the dead.
The Atreus sections are definitely a complete change of pace and on my first playthrough I wasn't a huge fan because I wanted to play with Kratos as much as possible but then they really grew on me. It helps to develop the characters and show how peaceful some areas are in the 9 realms where the Aesir haven't touched. I also think I just have a soft spot for like goofy 80's style kids adventures like the Goonies and thats what it felt like to me lol.
13:33 I noticed how one of the spirit balls went inside the knife, this is awesome subtle foreshadowing for the continuation of Fenrirs life at some point in the story
I just noticed, and I don't think I would without watching these videos, Freya sharpening her blade is a transition to the next story beat. When Atreus confronts her w/ Sindri, the spark while sharpening the blade triggers the music and conflict. Always talking about blues and oranges, there isnt a spark until just before Atreus reveals hes the last Giant. 🤙
The serpent doesn’t move slow because he’s huge, he moves slow because he’s moving slow. He’s actually very fast and very powerful. That’s what we seen at the end of last game. And you thought it was too fast for the frame rate but it was really just the video you were reacting to. In-game the fast movement from the serpent is fast, smooth and aggressive.
It can be fast but what I mean is where the camera is positioned viewing the beast so to speak, it should have been slower or look heavier. Hopefully that makes sense?
Hi, I discovered your channel through your God of War video, super stoked to see you covering Ragnarok! Usually I'm not too fond of reaction channels, but you bring enough personality, humour and education that I couldn't help but stick around. Great work mate, keep it up!
My favorite thing about this game is how much they focus on the side characters this time. I think that's where your feeling of watching a tv show comes from. Like it's taking its time setting everyone up
It's simply brilliant to combine nordic mythology with the growing up of a boy, his father trying to convey to him his aversion to unnecessary killing (war) and asserting himself against the will of the gods, taking fate and life into his own hands. For young, unstable people this game can have a positive message of becoming a good person despite loss and fate. And fathers who play this game can learn to be forgiving and supportive. And i love the cutscenes, the actors and of course the direction and script are top notch.
Hey Kai, just wanted to thank you for your content. All the techniques and light patterns are so interesting to learn about, it also allows me to re-live the scenes that shocked me and see your reactions to it.(To which you DO NOT disappoint lol) But yeah can’t wait to watch all this in one go and see how you react, once again thanks for your effort we all greatly appreciate it. Keep up the awesome work!!! 🤍❤️🤍🤍
i love how in the scene when kratos mention faye or mother he calls his axe cuz it was hers, example: gow 2018 after the fight with buldar faye we are not ready then the axe came in on the word faye now with the bear fight kratos mentioned faye he calls the axe
YEAHHH, never have I been this excited to watch someone just commentate on a game, it’s just the way you do it that reels me in, you’re a talented guy 😤
I love how the troll after the breaks stop working in Svartalfheim is a nod to the developers letting the audience know they've listened since the first game about enemy type; Most every boss in 2018 was a Troll, but not anymore. Lol
I’ve been waiting for this one since your last GoW video!! You’ve gotta watch the previous games, it really gives perspective and makes you appreciate how much Kratos has grown as a God!!
"I've been waiting for this, you're not from here. We have a traditional called blood payment, means I'll get a piece of you what you took from my family, you'll pick it up."
For me the most impressive stuff in the opening is always the power dynamics, shifting from Kratos, to Atreus to Thor and Odin, who is big in the scene, usually is taking control. Also the prop use, they put their weapons down, equalized with the table, but the mead is not shared, the ravens at first uneasy spies reveal the conniving nature of Odin when he offers his deal. I like that Thor is first here only to assert dominance, show a bit of the stakes.
One key dialogue that was cut in the video you watched is that the spell that Atreus used during Fenrir's death he put a part of the wolf's soul in his knife and he did it unintentionally. Kratos and Angrboda pay attention to it - Kratos saw the parts of the soul fly away and Angroboda recognized that there is a soul in Loki's knife.
Even though you're missing out on a lot of the story from exploration, I hope you end up playing it and uploading your experience to TH-cam so we can get the full review and experience from you! I enjoy listening to your tidbits about film and perspective but I bet you'll really like to get the full story from gameplay. It's just so good!
How good is that conersation in the beginning with Thor and Odin in his house. Sooooo many unspoken things that let you understand the charecters! Brillient.
Yes, I will say as much as other people have said the walking around dialogue the boat dialogue from the first game. So many of these things are lost during these viewings. However, I adore how much is left for you to experience personally because it truly is important because there are so many side quests that you will not see in these videos. And that's a good thing, And on top of that, I just want to say personally the way that your commentary shakes the view of the worlds that I want to create in my head into a digital medium are truly inspiring. Countless times your description of the lighting, the music again. The first time I heard you say that the camera and music needs to be a character in the story. It changed my entire perspective. Also, I just wanted to say when Mimir And kratos were talking alone in the room while Atreus was eavesdropping on them just before setting off with sindri, when he said "Aye brother, and I wish I could climb a tree again." Something to that effect. It really painted Mimir as a character for me. Because imagine the wisest man in the world in all of history simply being ahead and the first thing he says to one of his only friends is that he wishes to climb a tree again. Considering he was imprisoned in a tree for so long, I thought it was a really really good bit of writing. But beyond that, I'm only halfway through the video right now and I cannot wait for you to see the second part. It's all incredible and honestly the most important bits are in the cutscenes so yeah you do miss some extra storytelling a little bit of the details And a little bit of world building. But in all honesty, I really think that is what's going to make this game almost mystical for you when you play. Again, keep up the good work man, on a side note I can't wait to see your continuation of the gears series because it at least all the way up until gears of war 4 where I played it just keeps getting better. You choose great games to look at, and the mix of viewing and explanation/review is just fantastic to watch. Thanks for the content
Kratos hasnt gotten "older" hes holding back. He doesnt wanna be the god of war 1-3 kratos. The comics and studio mention this. He canonically can lift the planet and they needed a way to nerf him for the game and other mythologies.
I love your channel ive been watching every upload and as someone starting in acting I love learning all the terminology and you being engaging and entertaining helps so much
1:38:54 It was Hela, goddess of the dead, who sent an army of the dead to help Loki, her father, in the Ragnarok war, and thanks to her, Loki won the War.
1:13:29 Becuase Týr escaped Odin's Einherjar were sent to look for him, so all the commotion was the Einherjar arriving in Svartalfheim and searching Týr.
The free dlc "Valhalla" acts as a 3rd installment rounding all the edges, I wasn't the biggest fan of the original trilogy but the 2018 story set a true growth tone that the fans have also grown to, many of the young boys who played the violent Kratos long ago are now fathers that relate to the emotions conveyed in these installments. I consider them masterpieces.
fun fact about focus in games, first, two types of a depth map, like a B&W picture of the frame, what ever is the closet is the brightest and furthest is darkest. one method is just by object distance, the other is by triangle and vector distance. and from that they just have a set point or region of focus distance, a intensity and over what distance value that can be changed and animated and what not. and so more and more blur. tho, in real time guick bluring doesnt involve realistic value changes, like small bright spots/points, that should lose value with more blur, but instead it just gets mushed out mostly, like a neibhour pixel average or what ever... anyways, thats that...
In this installment of God of War there's quite a bit of storytelling that is given through discussions during gameplay and sidequests, which the video you're watching seems to skip. So a couple big ones that you should know: - After saving Tyr, he discusses the fact how he's sworn of all violence. - While Atreus goes to find Freyja, Sindri tells Atreus a secret. Brok actually died, and Sindri jumped into the well of souls to recover him, but only brought back 3 of his 4 soul parts. Brok has no idea. The "head's mess" mentioned before is actually dealt with in a sidequest, which I won't spoil for you in case you intend of playing it. Also, you said that Faye looks like the actress in Daredevil. It is!
In the previous games a lot of the Gods brought Kratos on themselves. For the Aesir it's like Kung Fu Panda 2, they walked right into the fates they were trying to avoid. Freya put Baldur on the path that killed him. The thing every villain is trying to prevent happens because they were villainous in their attempts, they try to stop what they end up making necessary.
Love your videos man, it’s really interesting to hear your insight on the film making side of things, and you speak at all the write moments so I feel I can watch along with you. Quality’s top notch but I guess it’s what’s you’d expect from a filmmaker such as yourself 🤣 Keep it up man
there is a lot of little details that for me elevated the storytelling. for example, thors wound in the stomach cannot be healed because jormungandr venom from when kratos threw his axe into the lake of nine. another one was when odin said that magni and modi were useless thor looks away in disgust and you can actually hear kratos whispered to atreus "hide mimir" or something like that, so its not just mumbling. there is a lot more but cant remember them all. GOW and GOWR is the best game of all time in my list
Not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but in the game there are no cuts. It goes from cutscene to gameplay in fluid motion. It’s an homage to Greek theatre.
IT IS TIME!!!! GoW and GoW:R are, imo, some of the most important games to ever be made, they opened a lot of doors for the medium, nothing NEW, but something so vital, visibility through excellence.

"In this case he's actually stronger" He's not stronger. In fact, he's significantly weaker. But yes, old age _shouldn't_ matter to Greek gods. Norse Gods have to consume Idunn's apples in order to not die of old age though.
"What they're cleverly doing is... gonna.. Oh mate he's fuckin' enormous!" Loved it!
19:26 you are spot on, it is her.
She has a good voice for VA
LESSS GOOOOO, I've been WAITINg for this uploadd!!
Plus most of Freya’s story and the situation with Brok’s soul, important context without which the second half of the game will appear lacking.
Why do reactors of this game always choose the worst videos to do it with? Every fucking time.
@@Nyx_2142because there's no way to know which one is good and which one is bad. its a gamble
@TP-pq9xx Yes it did. Mimir spoke about what it meant afterwards.
@TP-pq9xx It was pretty much supposed to make a sad scene more tragic as a whole, and add to the development of Sindri.
I know there’s alot of complaints about missing some dialogue in the video but I’m still enjoying the insight you offer through the POV of a professional. I’ve played the game twice and it’s almost like seeing it for the first time through not just your fresh reaction but your cinematic analysis.
That's so cool to hear, thank you!!
5:30 SPOT FRICKEN ON!!!?
Your eyes are not only skilled as hell but your ear too! Man I'm loving your content
Thank you so much for watching!
Kratos original height was downscaled my guy him and Thor would be face to face
@Loner_Mike98 not downscaled. They literally brought in a BIGGER guy to play him :P but even at his original 7ft he's smaller than Thor. Doesn't mean he's weaker, just smaller in size which is okay my guy
@@farhanchoksi98 I grew up playing these games never said he was weaker he’s actually waaaaay stronger than his god of war 3 counterpart and he was downscaled to judges height so the movement could match the motion capture better.
1:35:13 The music here as it slowly pans to Tyr in the background...
His creation is fine but the scene is a major red flag.
I love how Kratos doesn't say anything, but also tells us so much alone with his eyes!
Yes, Thor is played by Opie. And that little musician, Raeb is the composer of both games, Bear McCreary. (Name backwards)
I know that now but at first I didn't. I could hear it!
Thank you for these, especially some of my favourite games
oh wow that came faster than expected, what a treat thank you very much !
I absolutely love that you dont pause it constantly to talk about it!! Thank you!
48:00 you should start asking that photographer random questions like how was building Mijolnir until he catches on
13:33 I noticed how one of the spirit balls went inside the knife, this is awesome subtle foreshadowing for the continuation of Fenrirs life at some point in the story
Thank you for being here!
My favorite thing about this game is how much they focus on the side characters this time. I think that's where your feeling of watching a tv show comes from. Like it's taking its time setting everyone up
I always loved the way they Richard Dreyfus painted Odin with a sort of mob boss energy. Turned the All Father into the Godfather.
The guys voicing Thor was Ryan Hurst, who was also the actor for Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy, brilliant actor and a perfect cast for Thor!
Was so excited for this game, great reaction!! TYSM for partnering with us 💙🎧
Hey Kai, just wanted to thank you for your content. All the techniques and light patterns are so interesting to learn about, it also allows me to re-live the scenes that shocked me and see your reactions to it.(To which you DO NOT disappoint lol)
But yeah can’t wait to watch all this in one go and see how you react, once again thanks for your effort we all greatly appreciate it.
2:16:49-2:16:54 had me hollering at the damned tv like "TELL HER KAI, LET HER KNOW BUSINESS IS WHAT WE STAND ON!"
55:03 the dwarf playing the Hurdy-gurdy here is voiced by the game’s composer… a name you’re probably familiar with; Bear McCreary
Cool little fact, the guy who does the voice for Mimir is the same guy who voices Senator Armstrong in Metal Gear Rising. Loving the channel Kai!
I look forward to watching this when I come back from work
So happy to see you checking out Ragnarok. It's got to be a top 5 game for me!
How good is that conersation in the beginning with Thor and Odin in his house. Sooooo many unspoken things that let you understand the charecters!
Brillient.
My man made the facial capture for Sindri.
31:50 What I am amazed s that you already knew what kind of character Odin is from a couple of lines he said Wow
this guy is starting to become one of my new favorite youtubers and I have no clue why, guess I like listening to stuff I don't understand.
Im so happy you did this much sooner than i expected! I didn't have to wait at all, thanks 😊
Kratos hasnt gotten "older" hes holding back. He doesnt wanna be the god of war 1-3 kratos. The comics and studio mention this. He canonically can lift the planet and they needed a way to nerf him for the game and other mythologies.
Finally somebody understands
I never realized about the change of colors that reflects her feelings
I love your channel ive been watching every upload and as someone starting in acting I love learning all the terminology and you being engaging and entertaining helps so much
That's awesome to hear and I hope it helps you whilst on set.
1:38:54 It was Hela, goddess of the dead, who sent an army of the dead to help Loki, her father, in the Ragnarok war, and thanks to her, Loki won the War.
Stoked you're doing these mate. The DLC for this one, with Tyr, is incredible.
Aa much as I love the og God of war the story is really just 1 beat that it hits over and over again
Yooo. I've been so excited for this. Can not wait.
I started watching your god of war videos today and you post Ragnarok the same exact time i start to watch? Must've been fate that brought me here
24:07 THEY CUT OUT THAT!???!!!! THEY CUT OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY
I've been waiting for this one, gonna love to see your reactions and your perspective on how this game handled its cinematics.
1:13:29 Becuase Týr escaped Odin's Einherjar were sent to look for him, so all the commotion was the Einherjar arriving in Svartalfheim and searching Týr.
YESSIRRR, IT'S FINALLY HERE. Play the tapes!
Honestly I'm glad you weren't exposed to the full story. That means you can play this without spoiling it.
Oh THAT is what I been waiting for!!!
So a couple big ones that you should know:
- After saving Tyr, he discusses the fact how he's sworn of all violence.
Btw Raeb is actually voiced by the music composer of the games Bear McCreary and hes playing the hurdy gurdy, an instrument that Bear plays
Love your videos man, it’s really interesting to hear your insight on the film making side of things, and you speak at all the write moments so I feel I can watch along with you.
Quality’s top notch but I guess it’s what’s you’d expect from a filmmaker such as yourself 🤣
Keep it up man
Thank you so much for watching and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the videos.
Already cant wait for next episode.
there is a lot of little details that for me elevated the storytelling. for example, thors wound in the stomach cannot be healed because jormungandr venom from when kratos threw his axe into the lake of nine. another one was when odin said that magni and modi were useless thor looks away in disgust and you can actually hear kratos whispered to atreus "hide mimir" or something like that, so its not just mumbling. there is a lot more but cant remember them all. GOW and GOWR is the best game of all time in my list
How am I just noticing that when Atreus is walking up to the cave, his silhouette looks akin to the mythical Loki with his helm on
Kai starting to look like kratos with that beard🔥😂
I've been inspired!
Finally got this one, 🔥🔥🔥 game!!!
LETSSS GOOO ITS FINALLY HEREEEEEEEEE
Not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but in the game there are no cuts. It goes from cutscene to gameplay in fluid motion. It’s an homage to Greek theatre.
IT IS TIME!!!!
GoW and GoW:R are, imo, some of the most important games to ever be made, they opened a lot of doors for the medium, nothing NEW, but something so vital, visibility through excellence.
great video as always
Well well well... what a nice surprise on a sunday.. Thank you Kai
As a gamer the Atreus sections are brutal, especially Ironwood being like 2 hours long, But from a narrative and story standpoint they're fantastic.
Yeaah I’ve been waiting for this video ❤
a lot of the action in cut-scenes were also captured with motion capture
Perfect companion video for my Sunday coffee
I hope the coffee was good!
