The answer to your question at 4:40 of "why not hand held during gameplay" is simple: motion sickness. Movements like that during actual gameplay can cause it on some people

Game has fillers, but meaningfull once. atleast for me i never felt bored playing this game. this onel, and ragnarok are my all time favorite games, both storywise and gameplay.
Is the second game exactly like this one? Does it get boring or have they changed it enough that it feels like a sequel? I'm excited to see how this one ends.
@@kaizammit They gameplay to the second one is similar but its story is incredible, given that I specialised in story writing while at college, I would say that is has one of the best stories in gaming history (though given that I never made it into the profession you can take my word with a grain of salt XD)
That is a hand held camera being used in the cutscenes. They get to get away with a lot of stuff because there isn't anything actually in their way on the motion capture stage (ie: Mom's Pyre at the beginning). They use a really cool technique that's a blend between camera tricks and in-game tricks. There's a ton of videos you can find about the behind the scenes. Very fun to learn how it was all done.
this game is a must play for people with children. it takes you through some of the emotions of raising a child in a strange way. its truly an amazing universe. and the relationships between all the characters in this and ragnarok its truly is amazing.
2:24:36 I don't remember the exact details because I learned it off of other comment sections durrig this part. I belive tossing an apple at someone in greece is a sign of showing love, and if the other person caught the apple they were showing love back, or something like that. Thats why kratos cut the apple instead of catching it. *Idk how reliable youtube comments are though.* Edit: I did a little researching and it's kinda mixed, some sourses are saying it's a marrige proposal and others are saying it's not.
Thinking about this in a practical way, it wouldn't make much sense to be a marriage proposal type thing. People probably tossed fruits to eachother all the time, just like we do today.
@ZeallustImmortal it can definitely be a cultural and environment-specific thing. In my culture (very small minority Asian group), ball-tossing is a courtship thing. It happens a lot at seasonal festivals, between a guy and a gal who are interested in each other. They basically just stand some distance apart and toss a ball back and forth. The activity gives young people a chance to talk and get to know each other while in a public space. What I'm saying is: sometimes when someone tosses you something, they're just tossing you something. Other times, depending on where and when and who you are, it means the they're interested in you.
Thanks for the video! It was my first God Of War game and... it IS amazing. The gameplay mechanics, I did expect to be good but the narrative side of it ? It took me totally by surprise. The relationship with his kid (and some other characters as well) is so well written and so well... filmed ? directed ? framed? The way you find the emotional Kratos, buried beneath his deep hide... Just amazing.
I came here expecting to watch someone react to this game for another time. What I got was an extremely informative and passionate breakdown of camera shots, composition, story telling etc in a way I'd never considered before. Awesome reaction man super enjoyable!
6:21 they do make him look ominous and imposing because at this point that’s absolutely how Atreus feels towards him. Kratos was not close with him when he was born out of his own fears of being a father again from the previous games. While as someone who played ever game this was personally my favorite scene that almost always brings me to tears because like you said they show just how menacing Kratos is and I can’t imagine having him for a dad and that feeling of losing your mom and being stuck with this guy. That’s what makes the first and second game just so good is that you see how their relationship helps and teaches both of them to be better men. I could fish about these games for ever but love that you’re going through them I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the sequel!

I like how you don't do fake hype style reactions, it just takes me out of it completely.
Oh, just noticed you haven't reacted to Control yet. Absolutely fantastic game, a cut down video will probably be incredibly confusing, but the visuals should be worth it either way. It also has probably the best integration of real life footage inside a video game I've ever seen
This is one of my favorite games. The following game, God of War Ragnarok, also has outstanding scenes and follows the story after the end of this game.
Fan fact. After snapping the stranger's neck at the beginning of the game, when you enable photo mode in game to explore, you can see the stranger giving you the middle finger while he is falling down
This game deserves every game of the year award it got! The masterwork of the camera shots is legendary in this game, honestly it's the best I've ever seen. Because this was a PS4 exclusive and I was an xbox player, after watching some cutscenes of this game, it convinced me to get a PS4 just to play this and I don't regret a thing. Love your video for this as well Kai, it's awesome reliving this game with someone who hasn't seen it before. Makes me want to play it again haha Looking forward to part 2 😁😁 Also I'd be mad to not mention this game wouldn't be the same without Christopher Judge as Kratos.
49:58 this moments so good..cause there’s a behind the scenes thing with the voice actor where he did joked about it. One of his takes is “Lambs crest….I’m the *fucking* God of War..”
iirc the reason Kratos calls Atreus boy throughout, is at first they hadn't decided on a name for the son so the iconic "Boy" was a place holder. Only for part way through development when they had settled on a name they realised Kratos calling his son Boy actually fit the narrative well and kept it in.
For a little bit of backstory for Kratos -- in the original games he was a Spartan general, as well as (unknown to him) a demi-god son of Zeus. He was a ruthless soldier and conquered and slaughtered for Sparta. He also had a wife and daughter. Kratos, at one point, pledged himself to the God of War Ares for victory in his battles. Ares accepted his offer and gave Kratos great power, at the expense of being in servitude to the god. Ares then tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and child, to take away any other attachments keeping him from full servitude to Ares. He burned his family's bodies at the temple to mourn them, and the oracle of the temple cursed Kratos for them, making the ashes of his family cling to his skin forever and giving him that extremely pale skintone and the moniker "The Ghost of Sparta". Mourning his losses, and more than anything enraged, Kratos sought revenge on Ares. This path led him to killing the God of War, taking his place, and then killing the majority of the Greek Pantheon. With God of War 2018 it's really not just a reboot to the series, but also a legitimate second chance for Kratos as a character. He has a wife and child again. Things can be better this time. It gives a lot of context for why he treats Atreus the way he does.
And in some comics he realizes his anger and being around his family too much got them killed so he constantly had trips in the wild to control his anger and not kill things. If he failed he would weigh that on him as its all to protect his family from the same mistakes. He always loved his family in Greece and in midgard. Except now we better understand why he's so distant. He doesn't want to be but he's this way because he feels he must
I fell in love with this game when I played it - hand't played the ones before, but this made me look back at the story before. I'm not a parent, but the whole father/son dynamic was great. And all the little stories and bonding moments you don't see in this just made it even better. I'm actually currently playing the sequel to this, and loving it as well.
This game is masterfully done. The “side quests” don’t feel like side quests, they feel like an extension of the journey, and totally optional, but so good that they don’t really feel optional, if that makes any sense.
16 Minutes in and already learned a lot of how I subconsciously percieved a lot of what's happening, but never knew how I was manipulated. Great Video so far!
The newer God of War games are amazing, from both a gameplay and a story perspective. I wish more games were this well written and directed like this. Makes it so much more immersive, personally.
The narrow gaps and crawl spaces are not only to hide loading screens(apparently they aren't really necessary for loading) but to make the player feel closed in and sort of claustrophobic. It is a way to add more setting to the game.(This "revelation" is directly from the studio who made the game)
I didn't expect to watch so much of this and wanting to watch it all but I'm actually learning a lot and your honesty helps to appreciate this game even more. One thing about Kratos from the past games that explains a lot about his attitude in this is that he absolutely hates and fully distrusts any Gods. When Atreus mentions any thing superstitious about gods kratos is instantly dismissive like when he lit the prayer lantern and it explains why he instantly disliked Freya when her nature was revealed.
coming from what god of war was before. to hear of him now having a kid, everyone groaned thinking about what shepherding around a lil twerp would be like. and then...it was nothing like that! I exaggerate of course. I had no doubt I would love this game. But i know others were def apprehensive of the concept before playing it.
The hacksilver (and other elements) you find in chests (or battle aftermath) allow you to buy and upgrade armor or buy new armor and also upgrade weapons. Experience allows you to gain new tactical skills.
Technically commenting for algorithm, but also wanted to ask about something you mentioned. You talked about games utilizing deep blacks/shadows. I recently discovered in my work that the movie/"cinematic" look is not necessarily due to deep blacks but rather due to milky blacks. It's the "S" exposure curve, where the black point is lifted to actually be a bit above true black. I am not sure if it has a real name, but I call it the "S" curve, because you first pin the curve 50% between midtones and pure black and then you pull the black point up. Then you pin the point 50% between midtones and white and you pull down the white point, slightly blowing out the highlights. Those two operations make the curve look like an "S". Obviously this should be done during one of the final color grading steps. If you haven't played with it yourself you should one day open one of your own projects that are already color graded and try it out. It's quite weird to see something you've seen with your own eyes turning into that fancy cinematic look. It feels a bit surreal. Do you feel like deep blacks now are better receveied in terms of the movie look though? I am 33 so my taste might be biased towards retro, lmao. And milky black certainly give me slight retro vibe.
Milky blacks have more of an original movie feel about it. It was due to the film stock they use. The "new" look is deep black, heavy contrast. I love that look. I personally crush my blacks which is meant to be a big no, no but I like that. The loss of detail makes the viewers eyes go to the highlights or where I've aimed them within the composition. I even bring my highlights down now to around 75% to give it a more serious vibe. Interesting fact for you. "real life" looking mods for games, look at the blacks. They are grey or 50 shades of grey because we don't see true black, dead black. They also push towards 5500/5600 kelvin (lighting) so to us, it looks so life like or real.
@@kaizammitEver seen a black cow on the side of the road while driving? Now that is nearly true black. Darker than the darkness. Its crazy. Youll think everything you're seeing to the sides is black, until you see the cow, the cow is so dark that you can see it BETTER because its darkness is so much darker than the roadside blackness.
1:27:20 “when he talks like that it sounds like he’s military….also almost like he’s Roman” Amazing how much you picked up on just the acting and dialogue alone knowing nothing about the previous games. Cause you hit the nail on the head right there.
2:24:41 fun fact , in Greece throwing an apple to someone is a sign of affection , normally associated with love . That’s a possible reason for why Kratos didn’t catch it .
the way the camera moves and pans and zooms in and out in some of the attacks and moves in gameplay is so dynamic and action-y it’s really really cool.
2:35:40 they knew hes a god its actually because prophesy says that both of them survive ragnarok itself so they thought they are literally immortal thats why he was so shocked
Also baldur is very important because his death signals the time when ragnorock is about to start so the longer baldur stays alive the further away ragnorock is
3:5 hell yeah! thats telc! mans voice is magic, he was the perfect pick for kratos. 40:18 so becuase its not spoilers for this or the next game but kratos's history i can explain a bit of why he acts so distant with atrias not being able to hug him, always calling him boy, kratos's life was hard even before becoming a god at the start of the first game, he had already seen countless friends die in battle, and was the last survivor of a massicure in which he prayed to aries for the strength to survive and deffeat the enemy that had wiped out the spartan forces, and while ares did grant him power he also eventualy cursed him with a blind rage that cuased kratos to sluaghter everyone in his village, his original family included, ares stained kratos's body white with the ashes of his people, kratos went on to kill ares in vengance for this and became the new god of war, but he refused to bend knee to the order of olympus and zues planned to kill him seeing him as a threat, ocasionaly kratos would find a thread of his old life in a lost brother, or an adopted duaghter, but every time he would lose that new found peace ether to an enemy of his past crimes or one of the many gods he angered, kratos fears seeing his son go down a similer path of rage and pain and lose that he did, he thinks the only influence he could ever be is a bad one, everyone he's ever cared about has died becuase of his actions or his reputation.
He starts off very distant toward his son at the beginning of the game then softens and becomes more and more close to him as the game progresses, he is trying to run and hide from his past as played in the previous God of War Games
The most logical reason is that using the controller makes you participate in the game, and having those moments as just cutscenes does the same thing as having quick events for you to the gamers: diminishing the experience. It really comes to the background and understanding the differences between each medium.
I'm glad your enjoyed this, as I thought you were gonna rip it apart when I first saw this video appear in my feed. What a treat. What I love most about the norse god of war games is, even though all these characters are literal gods, all their struggles feel so deeply human. The heart of the narrative is all about family and the complexities of parenthood, this is seen from both our protagonists and antagonists as well, and these themes show up even more in the second game. It is such a down to earth and personal story even though the setting is so fantastical and larger than life. Realistic characters in unrealistic settings has to be one of my favorite writing styles. This sense of humanity also carries over to the fights. Even though baldur and kratos can literally punch trough rocks and split logs in half, there is this sense of "dirtiness" to the fight that makes it feel human. This is no graceful duel, it is a brutal and messy skirmish and I love it.
Super impressed that you caught on to Kratos being a solider, even coming close to what specifically he was. He was a Spartan before becoming a god in the originals.
The fact that I am having such a hard time irl right now and my face instantly light up to see you react to one of my most favorite games ever. Thank you so muc for this!!

Thank you for always being here and watching, I always appreciate your time and the comments you leave. I don't know if you can see but you're my channels top commenter, you have a badge next to your name. Crazy cool!
@kaizammit Aw snap. Thanks man.
1:24:33 the walking through walls sections are usually used to load objects into the scene, so its pretty important for a game like this where its all one shot. Games nowadays are full of interesting ways to hide loading screens
You should definitely react to the first few God of wars, a completely different style and brutal.
got it!
@@kaizammit They gameplay to the second one is similar but its story is incredible, given that I specialised in story writing while at college, I would say that is has one of the best stories in gaming history (though given that I never made it into the profession you can take my word with a grain of salt XD)
pacing was off though, narrative-wise 2018 tops ragnarok for many of us but rag is also pretty good. @jasongibson6131
@@FitzgeraldFazbearingtonthe story is actually really disappointing and just lacklustre

The camera focuses on the "woods" in the background. Clever
I never even clocked that, they even dirty framed it too!!
@@kaizammit That is actually where Freya lives too, the woods with the red leaves. You can see it in the map in the game.
The music in GOW is some of the most beautiful i've ever heard
Agreed these games are the reason I got into orchestra music
That is a hand held camera being used in the cutscenes. They get to get away with a lot of stuff because there isn't anything actually in their way on the motion capture stage (ie: Mom's Pyre at the beginning). They use a really cool technique that's a blend between camera tricks and in-game tricks. There's a ton of videos you can find about the behind the scenes. Very fun to learn how it was all done.
this game is a must play for people with children. it takes you through some of the emotions of raising a child in a strange way. its truly an amazing universe. and the relationships between all the characters in this and ragnarok its truly is amazing.
someone was walking with a camera and it was handheld, the techniques are amazing. check out the studio where they filmed this amazing game.
2:24:36 I don't remember the exact details because I learned it off of other comment sections durrig this part. I belive tossing an apple at someone in greece is a sign of showing love, and if the other person caught the apple they were showing love back, or something like that. Thats why kratos cut the apple instead of catching it. *Idk how reliable youtube comments are though.*
Edit: I did a little researching and it's kinda mixed, some sourses are saying it's a marrige proposal and others are saying it's not.
Caught me off guard too fella. RAGNAROK next I say.
46:00 the answer imo is immersion, at least it helps me immerse myself more, it's what makes video games it's own art form
25:13 "Oh my God he can pick that big 'Boulder' up?"
Baldur : "Look at my name bro lol"
You most likely won't see this..but I fuckin LOVE watching reactors like you, LOVE watching people like you appreciate REAL art like this franchise,...I love hearing your take on various situations, it helps me see things I might not have noticed before..a different take on things is DEFINITELY refreshing.
You got yourself a new subscriber.
I see everything 👀 haha. Thank you so much for watching and for hanging out with me. Glad to have you apart of the community.
I love this game and you're explaining it in ways I hadn't considered.
I love how you blend aspects of filmmaking into the commentary whilst simultaneously enjoying the story beats as well. I love the camerawork in this game as well as Ragnarok. Looking forward to seeing the rest! Also, I must say of the few filmmaker react type channels around, I appreciate how you come across quite genuine and real.
Oh really! I normally don't like the crossing of mediums unless it's super smooth. Sounds like it could be a good watch... Thanks !
This is one of my favorite games. The following game, God of War Ragnarok, also has outstanding scenes and follows the story after the end of this game.
I'm sold then!
"press square to sex" : god of war 2005

55:40 The serpent says "I know you, Ghost of Sparta. Find Mimir, he will help"
Dude! I can hear that clear as day now you've told me what it's saying! How does he know the ghost of Sparta, reputation?
@@kaizammit Lmao, time travel. Not even kidding.
Fan fact. After snapping the stranger's neck at the beginning of the game, when you enable photo mode in game to explore, you can see the stranger giving you the middle finger while he is falling down
I'm glad that you finally reviewed this. The game and the subscenes were spectacular!
I am finally here! haha.
Makes me want to play it again haha
Looking forward to part 2 😁😁
Also I'd be mad to not mention this game wouldn't be the same without Christopher Judge as Kratos.
I love when Atreus hit the boar at 43:40, you hear the glee in Kratos' voice.
Like a true proud father
That shot of Kratos standing in the doorframe with his three note theme playing never fails to send chills all over my body
He doesn't want to be but he's this way because he feels he must
I always adored the sound of the mourning dove in the background and around their home.
Honestly your videos are a balm for the soul!! informative, entertaining, funny, the whole package!
Thank you for watching and it's super awesome to hear you're enjoying them.
16 Minutes in and already learned a lot of how I subconsciously percieved a lot of what's happening, but never knew how I was manipulated. Great Video so far!
Need a Part 2!
Coming very, very soon!!
The camera work in most cutscenes actually IS handheld, captured using mocap along with the actors.
Now this is a new level of reaction. Story scenes from great games. Can't wait for part 2!
Coming very, very soon!
The story in this game and in Ragnarok is so so good. Loved watching you react to this!
Love his constant comments on the score. It is one of the best I’ve ever heard
This is such a fantastic watch. Your joy, appreciation, and passion make this that much more enjoyable. And this game is already phenomenal. Thank you
I love this series already but you talking about the film making aspect of it all makes me appreciate this more 😃
The fight with Baldr is one of my favorite opening scenes in games.
I love how it caught me of guard and for that reason, it will live in my head rent free for years. GOLD!!
It's a good day when you drop a video. I learn a bit every time.
That's awesome to hear, thank you!!
I’ve played through this game and Ragnarok four times because of the story and the connection between Kratos and Atreus.
Awesome! Love seeing your point of view of this game. Can't wait to see more!
More coming!!
15:18 had me wheezing😂 “has he got a f’ed up immune system or something”
Technically he does because he can't die
I played this game years ago and LOVED it but seeing you break it down from a movie maker PoV just made me love it more.
@@kaizammit Thank you so much that's so much great knowledge! I really appreciate it!
1:27:20 “when he talks like that it sounds like he’s military….also almost like he’s Roman”
Amazing how much you picked up on just the acting and dialogue alone knowing nothing about the previous games. Cause you hit the nail on the head right there.
2:24:41 fun fact , in Greece throwing an apple to someone is a sign of affection , normally associated with love . That’s a possible reason for why Kratos didn’t catch it .
the walking through walls at 1:24:20 is done as a little trick to let the next area load. It's a hidden loading screen.
the way the camera moves and pans and zooms in and out in some of the attacks and moves in gameplay is so dynamic and action-y it’s really really cool.
2:35:40 they knew hes a god its actually because prophesy says that both of them survive ragnarok itself so they thought they are literally immortal thats why he was so shocked
No matter how professional you are, you cant get not distracted by the story telling of the GoW saga, is too damn good.
Also baldur is very important because his death signals the time when ragnorock is about to start so the longer baldur stays alive the further away ragnorock is
Great video, mate. Lots of insights and great commentary on the art and technicality.
I’m so ready to see the rest of your reaction. I absolutely love all of the God of War games and this one is my favorite.
Two uploads in one day?! We are blessed. Can’t wait for part 2
That was a mistake on my behalf haha. Enjoy it though! Thanks for watching.
He starts off very distant toward his son at the beginning of the game then softens and becomes more and more close to him as the game progresses, he is trying to run and hide from his past as played in the previous God of War Games
Why spoil it 😔 I get the info about the older games i guess
This is one of my favorite games of all time because it feels like a real playable movie. Absolutely a masterpiece story wise
The most logical reason is that using the controller makes you participate in the game, and having those moments as just cutscenes does the same thing as having quick events for you to the gamers: diminishing the experience.
It really comes to the background and understanding the differences between each medium.
They’re making him the god he once was 😎🔥can’t wait to see part 2. Great work as always and glad to see this beauty finally released
I'm glad your enjoyed this, as I thought you were gonna rip it apart when I first saw this video appear in my feed. What a treat. I'm kind of sorry you didn't get to experience this on a play through. It would have been an even longer video though. Games like this come along once in a blue moon. Looking forward to seeing your WTF moments in the next video. Great commentary throughout. I'm not saying that because you liked this story.
i would've never imagined I'd sit and watch a 2 and a half hour long reaction video, but i did and I'm here for the follow up episodes and the next game. Can't even begin to explain how much I would love for you to know the whole story of kratos from the beginning
I will be covering the original trilogy so stay tuned!
That Intro still gets me. One of the best Intros to a game.
Only played through this a few years ago. My first taste of god of war. Blew my away completely. Now i want to buy it again!
The fact that I am having such a hard time irl right now and my face instantly light up to see you react to one of my most favorite games ever. Thank you so muc for this!!
I hope this video takes the edge off! I also hope things turn around soon in your personal life too. Think positively and it will happen. You'll make it happen 💪🏻👍🏻
@@kaizammit Thank you so so much for the kind words. Just finished watching it all and I love how you reacted to this! I know that next video is going to be even more amazing!

Great watch, looking forward to part 2! :)
I WANT A PART 2!!!
And yes, there is no loading screen in this game. They hide it in gameplay when Kratos open door or crouching. They really did a good job on that.
*Mate,I really enjoy watching your reaction to the cinematic and story.Really looking forward for Part 2
It's a good thing I'm watching a filmaker so I get insightfull commentry based on his experite liek "whoah look at that angle" or "wha that's some good lighting"
I'm not going to say the terminology again and again. It would get boring for viewers and for me. I give some very good nuggets but I scatter them throughout the entire video.
If you skip to certain bits then you'll miss them. The beginning I'll talk more filmmaking shop and drop it less and less the further we go.
Want to know something then please ask away. If you don't like it then maybe don't watch. That's all I got fella.
Ah, you missed Sindri breaking the fourth wall at 2:25:10, pushing the camera away.
Since you've finished the game, the fight at the end of the video is even more interesting, because Magni and Modi kept calling Atreus "half breed" but they never knew he was a god. They knew he was half giant/Joten, and assumed Kratos was the giant/Joten.
