Just one little tip from someone who built quite a lot of big box speakers you need to add a spacer in the middle of the crossover to prevent damage from vibration . For the middle I make the spacer an 1/8th of an inch smaller , before mounting the crossover I put some hot glue on it and then quickly place the crossover onto the spacers and screw it down . Once the hot glue sets completely the crossover will feel really solid and i promise it wont vibrate anymore . If you ever need to take the crossover off a hairdryer is more than enough heat to soften the hot glue and take it off
The mids are a closed back design, so they do not share any airspace with the woofers. Typical open back speakers would need a separate chamber though. Very common question with this design

I have big doubts about the use of this wool in acoustics. A synthpon is needed, but from this as if she did not have to breathe when playing bass, she can throw harmful particles into the air - no?
I did a lot of research on this before installing the wool. Most do not find it would be an issue. I can always add a thin breathable material over the back of the port if I found it was in issue though. I also sprayed all of the wool with the contract adhesive after installation to try and lock all fibers into place. This material had some of the best acoustic properties which is why I used it.
Everything I read said that rockwool and traditional fiberglass insulation was great for damping and none of it will decrease volume. I don't believe it will be an issue, but there may be someone smarter out there who can correct me?

We're kinda the opposite on builds - ha ha : ) I tore out my 8 speakers w/ 24 drivers and built two 8 foot tall towers and simply 1 "top of the food chain" full range driver on each. Prefer the sound of less / higher quality drivers after many years of surrounding myself with speakers : ) So, 2 drivers, 2 subwoofers now is my new #1 favorite - never heard such clarity.
You may have said in the video but I admit I skipped through, how come you have used the same chamber for the mids and lows on the tower speakers? would they not need to be in their own tuned volume for the performance?
Yea sorry I didn't go over that. I will in the next video, but the mids are sealed, so they don't use any of the box airspace. Kind of a neat design. You can see the backs of the mids on the unboxing video

Better low end response. Not much under 70-75 Hz when sealed. Figured I was altering the boxes anyways, might as will make them a bit bigger and port them. It'll be better if I run them full range for music with no subs

Size constraints. For movies these will still be crossed over with the subs. I would still have the subs on if listening to all channels for music as well. 2 channel listening would be really the only time without subs so that's went I only did the towers. No reason you couldn't port all three though

@@gaj9080 Honestly I don't think they will change what they are doing. The designer said I would probably get more bass reflections off of the floor with the setup, but said it should still sound just fine. They have the 1099 and 1899 (now discontinued) in the same configuration, so probably won't change the 1299 just to keep in consistent. I have not powered them up yet because I don't want to lose the motivation to finish them when I get a few warm days! I'd be too tempted to watch a few movies instead! lol
I have not heard the Titans myself... I know there are a few guys on AVS Forum that have owned or heard both. I'd do a search there or start a thread in the DIY Speaker subforum. I can say that I have been extremely happy with the 1299s. I haven't seen anything bad about the Titans. You'll be set with either!
It will have some effects on it. The original designer said there would be some more bass reflections off the floor with both woofers down low, but he said it still sound great. Most things can be tweaked and corrected with EQ now days so should be ok
Kyle, I have the DIYSG HTM12s and am absolutely blown away by their performance. I can only imagine what the 1299s would sound like, though they would be far too large for my 13.5 x 16 x 10 theater. Subscribing to watch your progress.

It is a good topic... unfortunately I only have experience with the ones I've built and a very small handful of others I've heard. Not enough that I'd feel comfortable making a video suggesting certain models. I'd have to build/listen to then for a decent bit before doing so. Yessir, the mid is actually a closed back design. It's not open to the enclosure, so the airspace doesn't effect it. I would have separate enclosures for it if it were a normal speaker 👍 not many speakers are closed back like the mids are

I'm building the 1099 and they say to put the crossover in the mid range cabinet.... But If I ever need to service it, how the hell would I get it out.... Is there any issues putting it in the woofer cabinet?
dont you think when the bass hits the whole room will be filled with glassfiber from the rockwool insolation ??? Its smarter to use specific soundproof materials instead of rockwool ??? maybe for sealed enclosure but for open...
Question about the insulation; wouldn't that fiberglass become friable with all that air movement causing 2 things: fiberglass particulate to float throughout the room and possibly degrade the speakers by virtue of the dust constantly vibrating on the cones/spider (or getting up into the cooling pole on the magnet)?
Regular pink fiberglass and mineral wool are some of the best damping materials for speakers due to their density (much more thorough explanations out there, just Google speaker damping). There is no issues with the speakers getting damaged. Some worry about the fibers being thrown into the air, while others use it and say it's not an issue. In my case, I sprayed the entire inside if the box with the 3m adhesive after adding the wool. This should lock most fibers into place. If it ever became an issue, you could always add a very thin material to block off the port (pantyhose is often used lol). Hope that helps

Nice speakers but I have some questions. Why didn't you just make new baffles? That looked like a weak baffle without the two cuts, and it sure didn't make them stronger with the cuts. The rockwool is very dens and will take up volume in the box. In a ported box, what do you think happens with the itchy fiber from the rockwool? Your 6,5", do they have sealed baskets?
These were cnc cut to fit the speakers perfectly and center them. That opening for the waveguide would not have been an easy cut to perfectly match. This was much easier And faster. And it is plenty strong once attached to the rest of the box. The lower brace and port are right by the joints adding strength across the front. The rockwool doesn't take up air volume in the box. A Google search will explain that more, but you want a dense breathable material for better damping to deaden the box. I left plenty of space around the port so the wool wasn't too close, but I also sprayed everything with a coat of the 3m adhesive before putting on the front baffle to lock in most fibers. Many have used this material with ported boxes and do not have that issue. A thin breathable liner such as spandex can be placed over the back side of the port area if one is worried (think pantyhose material lol). And the mids are a sealed back. The original design does not have anything in separate chambers either.
@@LifeofBliss If you had used the same router bit that you used to make it flush you would have been able to copy the baffle holes. If you had made two baffles the one you have could have been put on the outside, then you wouldn't need perfect cut outs on the inner baffle. But if you are happy, that's all that matters since it's your speakers. I personaly would never use Rockwool.

Honestly what’s funny is that what people use most for baffling is more harmful like Cellulose and cotton, all of these materials, however don’t ever particulate enough or amount to a quantity that would be harmful. I enjoyed watching the video. You did a great job on the build. My only complaint would be the wool insulation put in. Thereswaybetter stuff to throw in there thats more eco friendly not only for your equipment, but for people enjoying the system. Bad bad mistake throwing that junk in there. Your not just damaging your equipment by having that stuff in there and allowing all those small fibrous particle getying into the spider and even down in between the coil and magnents burning them up quicker than normal wear and tear, but your also hurting people that come over by having them breath in all those fibers the speakers are blowing throughout the room. I mean there are soo many better options than that, second skin makes some of the best products. Your spending all the money on building a quality system, why cheap out on wool insulation, makes no sense. But its not my stuff so it dont really matter, but cant wait to see the finished product!
Appreciate it man. And there are many products out there for damping, no doubt. I chose this based in the effectiveness (being very dense it breaks up the sound waves better). There is also plenty of data out there supporting the safety of mineral wool. I'll link below a thread with several studies done in a medical journal looking at mineral fibers. These aren't like subs that would have huge amounts of airflow, and I also did spray the entire inside of the enclosure/insulation with the adhesive spray after installing all of the mineral wool to help trap any fibers from shedding off. the two boxes that are have a different angle. are they the same cuft? Why did you have the black paint between the wood and glue ? I guess you didn't have any problems because of that? it looks really nice! I want to build some boxes again!
I tried to make them as close as possible, but my measurements were a bit off when it came time to building. That are within 10-15%, but they are sealed and will be able to take care of any differences once I EQ everything. If you look at the painting part again, I only painted the exposed side of the port and taped off the supports when painting in the box. No paint where the glue was applied. if you where to buy a speaker that can be identical on all channels minus the center channel & Sub's of course , for a 7.2.6 speaker surround setup. choosing (3) different ((( 1st, 2nd , 3rd place ))) pre-build's & (3) D.I.Y from Part Express what would you're recommendations be. can you include 3 chooses from both category's.
Lol let me just spend a few hours researching that for you... I picked the #1 speakers I liked. There are plenty of great speakers out there. You can have an identical center channel with an acoustically transparent screen.
I just threw that together real quick for the dart board project I did. Used a really old hand me down router lol. I need to redo it with a base for my new router. I don't have a cut list but it was just some 1x4s and a 3/4 inch piece of melamine board. I'll make a video when I do the next one with my newer router.
The 1299s are more detailed. Dynamics are crazy for movies and they'll get much louder without distorting. Swipes are a little more laid back. They are awesome for some 2 channel or lower to mid level music listening. They have a good image for home theater, but the 1299s are just better in almost every way for that environment
I’ll be buying the exact same speakers soon for the front 3 speakers(when they restock). Sealed center and ported left and right my question is if I leave the baffle as is with woofers on top and bottom would using the same dimensions you are would I still have a port tune of 35hz??

Thanks man. I think I may have answered you on another post... but these 1299s and the 1099s are very sensitive at 99 dB @ 2.83v at 1 meter. Great sound stage and don't break the bank too bad if you don't mind doing a little work. JTR speakers are another great option if you wanna buy something ready to rock. A bit more expensive up front though

Great build and video. Getting ready to start my 1299s and am leaning toward this design. Super exited! Pretty stable on carpet in this configuration? I have small children running around, which is part of the reason I like this...shorter with the weight lower. BTW, I think you have a typo in your cut list, both here and on AVS. I think the top of the center should be 16.25 deep, not 16.5.
If you make boxes you should know that 15 inch speakers need separate enclosures or they fight each other for air and don't sound right and can develop other problems ps I made towers when I was 16 years old had two concert speakers and put them in my parents back yard and rocked the neighbor Hood
@@LifeofBliss a tech at car toys told me and my cousin he did bump off for them in the 90ds. Have 15 inch cerwin Vegas from the 80 D's they are in separate enclosures with air ports no planes though lol
Great video 😊 I have a speakerseries which I really like, except the fact that the center is a little small (2×6.5") bass. Fronts have dual 12", rear have dual 10". Fronts go down to 22hz, rears 25hz. Center is rated at 50hz, but one of my recievers put it as large, the other one at 40 hz 🤷♂️ Thing is, I have 2 Def Tech Supercube Reference subs, and find the transition from center to subs to be missing some slam. I am therefore thinking of taking 2 10" as in the rear, and building a box with thouse around the center. So that the center sort of will be inside the basspart of the speaker. Would you say this is possible, and how would you do it? I don't have much woodworking tools, and have never buildt any speaker, but hey, everone starts somwhere 🤪 What so I need to pay atention to in order to keep the same sensitivity and ohm as it is now? I suppose it is important to use the same woofers as the rears (rears are actually babybrother fronts, and everything except the woofers are the same as the fronts I use). And finally, would it be a better idea to route the center to a small sub, with highpass, and not fuck anything up? 🤪
You feel you're missing something from the center? If you have it crossed at 80 or 100 hz, your subs should be doing all of that. Are you running it as large? That may be the problem. Your subs will do everything under 100 hz better than your mains will. I would look at how you have things crossed over before building anything. Your towers sounds like they would be great for full range 2 channel music, but for movies I'd look at crossing your subs at 80-100 hz 👍

(Always thoght that the subs did a better job if they have less to do. But they are not even on 1/4 of gain, so I suppose I can try 100 hz.) Probably should cut rhe rears higher too? Now I have them at 40hz, they are dual 10". I have tried to put fronts in small, but the sound is way punchier with them in large (I have sub in pluss, so 120hz and down goes to the subs as well as the fronts). I am avare that fronts in large is "wrong" and have tried to make small sound great, but no matter what I do, it sounds punchier and actually cleaner, with them in large. (I do have 600 watts and 1500 dampingfactor on each front, so controll of them is great). I will try to raise frequency in the subs. Thanks for the reply mate 😊
Simply beautiful work and craftsmanship right there. I’m almost set to buy their 1099’s for my LCR’s but only one question. Why didn’t you use a full brace (without holes) on the top part of the speaker to isolate the mids and compression driver in their own sealed chamber?
The 1099 and 1299 have different mid range drivers. They are open back in the 1099 and have a sealed back on the 1299s. Compression drivers are sealed as well, so no need to make a separate chamber for them. I think I'll go over that in the next video as there have been quite a few questions on that. Which if you aren't building them and have the plans from DIYSG, I can see why it gets asked. Thanks Jose, hopefully you'll get those 1099s soon!

This mineral wool insulation is about the best stuff for damping a box (right there with fiberglass insulation). Works great for absorbing midrange frequencies that would otherwise cause distortion in a box that has no lining on the walls. I looked into the issue with fibers possibly blowing out of the port. Most didn't find it to be an issue, including some professionals in the speaker business. I could always come back and attach some breathable thin material in the box behind the port, such as panty hose, to prevent fibers coming out if it became an issue. Also, I didn't show it in the video because I don't thing most people even do this, but I did take that 3M adhesive spray and coat all of the insulation after it was installed to lock most of the fibers into place
Doing great! Cough cough... I sprayed all of the mineral wool with spray glue on the inside to minimize fibers. Not much air movement like a sub enclosure would have

Thanks. I actually haven't heard these particular speakers yet, but I have heard the 10 inch versions. They are very detailed and have a great neutral sound. I think eminence makes great speakers so I'm sure that will sound good

They don't make flat pack's for the 1299? I built some 1099 a few years ago, not so much wood work just gluing. I see you arranged the drivers differently though, maybe that's why you had to custom make the boxes. Lot of extra complexity. They are amazing speakers and still Wow me to this day, 4 years later. I smile everytime I listen to them. They are somewhat purpose built speakers though, more for home theatre then music. They sound good with music, but they are kind of like giant satellites, aka not full range. I keep mine crossed at 80 Hz to a 15" sub. Feel like I could use one more sub. People see huge woofers and assume these are full range. What they are is DYNAMIC, loud, and effortless... they play clean to super high SPL, and the directionality of the wave guide is spectacular, really helps with room acoustics. I also use the VOLT 10 LX, and was quite impressed with them as well.
I don't remember seeing flat packs for them... I've heard those 1099s, amazing speakers! And yea I've heard these are better with movies than music. Really excited to get them finished up!

Ported is for shitty speakers....it's just the truth. A proper sealed box will always sound better. Also him moving the tweeter was stupid. There was a specific reason it was centered between two woofers

The front baffle is pre cut. You can order the entire flat pack kit for an extra charge. I modified mine so I built the majority of the enclosure besides the front baffle
its cool to see u building good old real tower speakers im tierd of seeing home theater setups with tiny tiny little cube speakers that cant get all sounds out the freqency range and power handling your speaker setup will do i dont like tiny spkrs !!!!!

We're kinda the opposite on builds - ha ha : ) I tore out my 8 speakers w/ 24 drivers and built two 8 foot tall towers and simply 1 "top of the food chain" full range driver on each. Prefer the sound of less / higher quality drivers after many years of surrounding myself with speakers : ) So, 2 drivers, 2 subwoofers now is my new #1 favorite - never heard such clarity.

Yea sorry I didn't go over that. I will in the next video, but the mids are sealed, so they don't use any of the box airspace. Kind of a neat design. You can see the backs of the mids on the unboxing video

Better low end response. Not much under 70-75 Hz when sealed. Figured I was altering the boxes anyways, might as will make them a bit bigger and port them. It'll be better if I run them full range for music with no subs

Size constraints. For movies these will still be crossed over with the subs. I would still have the subs on if listening to all channels for music as well. 2 channel listening would be really the only time without subs so that's went I only did the towers. No reason you couldn't port all three though

@@gaj9080 Honestly I don't think they will change what they are doing. The designer said I would probably get more bass reflections off of the floor with the setup, but said it should still sound just fine. They have the 1099 and 1899 (now discontinued) in the same configuration, so probably won't change the 1299 just to keep in consistent. I have not powered them up yet because I don't want to lose the motivation to finish them when I get a few warm days! I'd be too tempted to watch a few movies instead! lol

I have not heard the Titans myself... I know there are a few guys on AVS Forum that have owned or heard both. I'd do a search there or start a thread in the DIY Speaker subforum. I can say that I have been extremely happy with the 1299s. I haven't seen anything bad about the Titans. You'll be set with either!

Does moving the original driver layout of the left and right channels change the sound of the speaker?
It will have some effects on it. The original designer said there would be some more bass reflections off the floor with both woofers down low, but he said it still sound great. Most things can be tweaked and corrected with EQ now days so should be ok

It is a good topic... unfortunately I only have experience with the ones I've built and a very small handful of others I've heard. Not enough that I'd feel comfortable making a video suggesting certain models. I'd have to build/listen to then for a decent bit before doing so. Yessir, the mid is actually a closed back design. It's not open to the enclosure, so the airspace doesn't effect it. I would have separate enclosures for it if it were a normal speaker 👍 not many speakers are closed back like the mids are

They’ll be an easy build. But on top of that, I’m going to build 3 mains and 4 surrounds with Dayton products too. But they won’t be kit. They’ll be custom design by me, so watching a few vids, and yours stood out being abit more interesting😂😂. Made me wanna see end product.

I'm building the 1099 and they say to put the crossover in the mid range cabinet.... But If I ever need to service it, how the hell would I get it out.... Is there any issues putting it in the woofer cabinet?

No, I sprayed all the insulation with the spray adhesive before placing the front baffle on. Plus there is not much air movement to be honest.

Question about the insulation; wouldn't that fiberglass become friable with all that air movement causing 2 things: fiberglass particulate to float throughout the room and possibly degrade the speakers by virtue of the dust constantly vibrating on the cones/spider (or getting up into the cooling pole on the magnet)?
Regular pink fiberglass and mineral wool are some of the best damping materials for speakers due to their density (much more thorough explanations out there, just Google speaker damping). There is no issues with the speakers getting damaged. Some worry about the fibers being thrown into the air, while others use it and say it's not an issue. In my case, I sprayed the entire inside if the box with the 3m adhesive after adding the wool. This should lock most fibers into place. If it ever became an issue, you could always add a very thin material to block off the port (pantyhose is often used lol). Hope that helps

These are the regular 1299 kits on their site. I cut the front baffle and rearranged things to better suit my needs.
Nice speakers but I have some questions.
Why didn't you just make new baffles? That looked like a weak baffle without the two cuts, and it sure didn't make them stronger with the cuts. The rockwool is very dens and will take up volume in the box. In a ported box, what do you think happens with the itchy fiber from the rockwool?
Your 6,5", do they have sealed baskets?
These were cnc cut to fit the speakers perfectly and center them. That opening for the waveguide would not have been an easy cut to perfectly match. This was much easier And faster. And it is plenty strong once attached to the rest of the box. The lower brace and port are right by the joints adding strength across the front. The rockwool doesn't take up air volume in the box. A Google search will explain that more, but you want a dense breathable material for better damping to deaden the box. I left plenty of space around the port so the wool wasn't too close, but I also sprayed everything with a coat of the 3m adhesive before putting on the front baffle to lock in most fibers. Many have used this material with ported boxes and do not have that issue. A thin breathable liner such as spandex can be placed over the back side of the port area if one is worried (think pantyhose material lol). And the mids are a sealed back. The original design does not have anything in separate chambers either.
@@LifeofBliss If you had used the same router bit that you used to make it flush you would have been able to copy the baffle holes. If you had made two baffles the one you have could have been put on the outside, then you wouldn't need perfect cut outs on the inner baffle. But if you are happy, that's all that matters since it's your speakers.
I personaly would never use Rockwool.

Is that rock wool? That makes you itch? It shouldn’t 🤔 it’s not like fiber glass insulation. I use that same stuff for my acoustic panels and have never had a problem. Guess you can never be too cautious tho 🤷🏻♂️

Honestly what’s funny is that what people use most for baffling is more harmful like Cellulose and cotton, all of these materials, however don’t ever particulate enough or amount to a quantity that would be harmful. Anyway as I’ve said before nice job 👍🏼 I may use rock wool in my next project I never thought to use that in lieu of polyester pillow filling haha. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Sunfire signature subwoofers but I have an extra sub I need to build a box for and this filling seems like just the right stuff 👍🏼🔊
I enjoyed watching the video. You did a great job on the build. My only complaint would be the wool insulation put in. Thereswaybetter stuff to throw in there thats more eco friendly not only for your equipment, but for people enjoying the system. Bad bad mistake throwing that junk in there. Your not just damaging your equipment by having that stuff in there and allowing all those small fibrous particle getying into the spider and even down in between the coil and magnents burning them up quicker than normal wear and tear, but your also hurting people that come over by having them breath in all those fibers the speakers are blowing throughout the room. I mean there are soo many better options than that, second skin makes some of the best products. Your spending all the money on building a quality system, why cheap out on wool insulation, makes no sense. But its not my stuff so it dont really matter, but cant wait to see the finished product!
Appreciate it man. And there are many products out there for damping, no doubt. I chose this based in the effectiveness (being very dense it breaks up the sound waves better). There is also plenty of data out there supporting the safety of mineral wool. I'll link below a thread with several studies done in a medical journal looking at mineral fibers. These aren't like subs that would have huge amounts of airflow, and I also did spray the entire inside of the enclosure/insulation with the adhesive spray after installing all of the mineral wool to help trap any fibers from shedding off. Just thought I would give you the reasoning behind my decision. I appreciate you explaining why you don't like it instead of being like some others who just wanna complain and call names. the two boxes that are have a different angle. are they the same cuft? Why did you have the black paint between the wood and glue ? I guess you didn't have any problems because of that? it looks really nice! I want to build some boxes again!
I tried to make them as close as possible, but my measurements were a bit off when it came time to building. That are within 10-15%, but they are sealed and will be able to take care of any differences once I EQ everything. If you look at the painting part again, I only painted the exposed side of the port and taped off the supports when painting in the box. No paint where the glue was applied. if you where to buy a speaker that can be identical on all channels minus the center channel & Sub's of course , for a 7.2.6 speaker surround setup. choosing (3) different ((( 1st, 2nd , 3rd place ))) pre-build's & (3) D.I.Y from Part Express what would you're recommendations be. can you include 3 chooses from both category's.
Lol let me just spend a few hours researching that for you... I picked the #1 speakers I liked. There are plenty of great speakers out there. You can have an identical center channel with an acoustically transparent screen.
Seems like your home cinema will be able to play louder than the speakers in an actual cinema :P

I don't have a cut list but it was just some 1x4s and a 3/4 inch piece of melamine board. I'll make a video when I do the next one with my newer router.

The 1299s are more detailed. Dynamics are crazy for movies and they'll get much louder without distorting. Swipes are a little more laid back. They are awesome for some 2 channel or lower to mid level music listening. They have a good image for home theater, but the 1299s are just better in almost every way for that environment

Insulation does not take up air space in the box. Inner dimensions will still be the same.
I’ll be buying the exact same speakers soon for the front 3 speakers(when they restock). Sealed center and ported left and right my question is if I leave the baffle as is with woofers on top and bottom would using the same dimensions you are would I still have a port tune of 35hz??
Yea it should all be the same volume and port size. The speaker placement shouldn't matter. Good luck getting yours together!

Thanks man. I think I may have answered you on another post... but these 1299s and the 1099s are very sensitive at 99 dB @ 2.83v at 1 meter. Great sound stage and don't break the bank too bad if you don't mind doing a little work. JTR speakers are another great option if you wanna buy something ready to rock. A bit more expensive up front though

Great build and video. Getting ready to start my 1299s and am leaning toward this design. Super exited! Pretty stable on carpet in this configuration? I have small children running around, which is part of the reason I like this...shorter with the weight lower.
BTW, I think you have a typo in your cut list, both here and on AVS. I think the top of the center should be 16.25 deep, not 16.5.

Check out diy sound groups website. The speaker kits come with front baffles or as complete flat packs.
If you make boxes you should know that 15 inch speakers need separate enclosures or they fight each other for air and don't sound right and can develop other problems ps I made towers when I was 16 years old had two concert speakers and put them in my parents back yard and rocked the neighbor Hood

I have a speakerseries which I really like, except the fact that the center is a little small (2×6.5") bass. Fronts have dual 12", rear have dual 10".
Fronts go down to 22hz, rears 25hz.
Center is rated at 50hz, but one of my recievers put it as large, the other one at 40 hz 🤷♂️
Thing is, I have 2 Def Tech Supercube Reference subs, and find the transition from center to subs to be missing some slam. I am therefore thinking of taking 2 10" as in the rear, and building a box with thouse around the center. So that the center sort of will be inside the basspart of the speaker. Would you say this is possible, and how would you do it? I don't have much woodworking tools, and have never buildt any speaker, but hey, everone starts somwhere 🤪
What so I need to pay atention to in order to keep the same sensitivity and ohm as it is now? I suppose it is important to use the same woofers as the rears (rears are actually babybrother fronts, and everything except the woofers are the same as the fronts I use).
And finally, would it be a better idea to route the center to a small sub, with highpass, and not fuck anything up? 🤪
You feel you're missing something from the center? If you have it crossed at 80 or 100 hz, your subs should be doing all of that. Are you running it as large? That may be the problem. Your subs will do everything under 100 hz better than your mains will. I would look at how you have things crossed over before building anything. Your towers sounds like they would be great for full range 2 channel music, but for movies I'd look at crossing your subs at 80-100 hz 👍

As of now, I have center and heights crossed over at 80hz. Maybe I'll try to raise it to 100hz. (Always thoght that the subs did a better job if they have less to do. But they are not even on 1/4 of gain, so I suppose I can try 100 hz.) Probably should cut rhe rears higher too? Now I have them at 40hz, they are dual 10". I have tried to put fronts in small, but the sound is way punchier with them in large (I have sub in pluss, so 120hz and down goes to the subs as well as the fronts). I am avare that fronts in large is "wrong" and have tried to make small sound great, but no matter what I do, it sounds punchier and actually cleaner, with them in large. (I do have 600 watts and 1500 dampingfactor on each front, so controll of them is great).

Simply beautiful work and craftsmanship right there. I’m almost set to buy their 1099’s for my LCR’s but only one question. Why didn’t you use a full brace (without holes) on the top part of the speaker to isolate the mids and compression driver in their own sealed chamber?
The 1099 and 1299 have different mid range drivers. They are open back in the 1099 and have a sealed back on the 1299s. Compression drivers are sealed as well, so no need to make a separate chamber for them. I think I'll go over that in the next video as there have been quite a few questions on that. Which if you aren't building them and have the plans from DIYSG, I can see why it gets asked. Thanks Jose, hopefully you'll get those 1099s soon!

Why insulation in a ported box? I thought that was a no-no so that fiberglass didn’t blow out the port.
This mineral wool insulation is about the best stuff for damping a box (right there with fiberglass insulation). Works great for absorbing midrange frequencies that would otherwise cause distortion in a box that has no lining on the walls. I looked into the issue with fibers possibly blowing out of the port. Most didn't find it to be an issue, including some professionals in the speaker business. I could always come back and attach some breathable thin material in the box behind the port, such as panty hose, to prevent fibers coming out if it became an issue. Also, I didn't show it in the video because I don't thing most people even do this, but I did take that 3M adhesive spray and coat all of the insulation after it was installed to lock most of the fibers into place

great video and very good job.how do they 12" eminence work in this speakers?i have read that eminence are good for horn loated speakers.i am thinking to build 2 tour speakers with 2 eminence kappa pro 15.you think they gonna sound good?
Thanks. I actually haven't heard these particular speakers yet, but I have heard the 10 inch versions. They are very detailed and have a great neutral sound. I think eminence makes great speakers so I'm sure that will sound good

They don't make flat pack's for the 1299? I built some 1099 a few years ago, not so much wood work just gluing. I see you arranged the drivers differently though, maybe that's why you had to custom make the boxes. Lot of extra complexity. They are amazing speakers and still Wow me to this day, 4 years later. I smile everytime I listen to them. They are somewhat purpose built speakers though, more for home theatre then music. They sound good with music, but they are kind of like giant satellites, aka not full range. I keep mine crossed at 80 Hz to a 15" sub. Feel like I could use one more sub. People see huge woofers and assume these are full range. What they are is DYNAMIC, loud, and effortless... they play clean to super high SPL, and the directionality of the wave guide is spectacular, really helps with room acoustics. I also use the VOLT 10 LX, and was quite impressed with them as well.
I don't remember seeing flat packs for them... I've heard those 1099s, amazing speakers! And yea I've heard these are better with movies than music. Really excited to get them finished up!

Love this build. Been eyeing the 1299's for awhile. I'm curious as to your opinion on the way the ported vs sealed enclosure sound. Keep up the great video's and thanks for putting in the time making them.

Ported is for shitty speakers....it's just the truth. A proper sealed box will always sound better. Also him moving the tweeter was stupid. There was a specific reason it was centered between two woofers

I'm curious as to why you think that woofer was placed there and the negative effects it would have moving it. I mean, the designer of the speaker gave me his thoughts and why it was designed that way, as well as what it would do by moving it. Interested in yours...

Wait a sec... Don't they come pre cut? That's what you get isn't it? In the kits?? Or you only get wood pieces?
The front baffle is pre cut. You can order the entire flat pack kit for an extra charge. I modified mine so I built the majority of the enclosure besides the front baffle

Supply chain issues and they weren't as popular as the 1099s from what I understand. Everything went to shit during covid for supply chain
its cool to see u building good old real tower speakers im tierd of seeing home theater setups with tiny tiny little cube speakers that cant get all sounds out the freqency range and power handling your speaker setup will do i dont like tiny spkrs !!!!!

Thanks Darren. Well the next video will be the prep and paint process. Unfortunately the high around where I live has been in the teens, so can't paint until it warms up a little. But we should get some warmer days soon and I'll get it done. Just don't want to rush it and have the paint not come out right...
