- The DIY Sound Group 1299 and Volt 10 speakers for my atmos home theater are ready to be finished. To do that, I used a protective speaker coating called DuraTex. Watch as I go over the entire process of finishing them off with an HVLP spray gun.

Port Dimension- 13.25" x 9" x 2" This will give the box a tune of 34-35 Hz. When cutting the port opening with the front baffle in place, this adds an extra 0.75 inches to the length of the port, so this is why the port board is cut to 8.25" long for a total length of 9 inches.

One of the most solid diy speaker builds, I have seen on TH-cam.

Duratek is the best!! It's the only finish I use for my builds. I prefer the roller grade because I like the textured roller look. It gives equipment that pro audio look. As far as filling and sanding, I just use Elmer's Wood Filler, then sand. Some quick diy's tips:
#1) sand the cabinets before applying filler. This makes everything easier by requiring less filler to be used since everything is smoothed out already
#2) have a spray bottle handy to moisten the filler a little so it's very easy to mold

Been used in pro audio speakers for decades & a good choice.
With my kids the speakers aren't indestructible. I'd add a cover to them. Your work is amazing and I love your channel. 👍🏾

(ok, that was a little flip but its definitely the way I feel about pets around anything of value but I get that some people see their pets as members of the family - c'est la vie).

Definitely the John Wick movies. I need to get Venom actually. I like the Greatest Showman for music as well (along with Hans Zimmer and Metallica concerts on bluray)
They do not sound any different if you paint them green, blue, red!
Finally got my first HVLP gun, used it on a few projects now. Not a duratex one yet, but that was my main motivation.
One of those projects was painting a toy box, and just wanted to say that issue of "hard to spray in the port" is the same issue I had with painting the inside of the box. It was too small to get the gun into to spray close, and from far away just not much material made it to the surface.
What worked for me was to close the pattern from the fan shape to the circle, in doing that the product is basically shot straight out rather than fanned giving it MUCH more throw distance.
I was able to paint the inside of the box perfectly like this, just gotta be careful not to get too much product in one spot since its so much more concentrated.
Still the best video for this I have seen, wish I could have sprayed my 18" sub project, the roller texture while more durable just is not what I want for an in-home application.
Also I went with the Steel Speakon connector for my sub, and for some reason it has a groove on the inlet so a perfect circle wont work to install it, that was a lot of work to slowly cut the slots for it to fit, but once installed its great and cant be turned in place even before screwing it down.
My God do you even need a sub for these speakers, I'm super jealous and impressed at the same time, can't wait to see them in action, good job thanks for the content
They won't play super deep with authority. Should have a good midbass presence, but will definitely need a sub for the lows. Luckily, I'll have that covered 😉

Thanks man. I was debating on using raptor liner bed liner vs duratex. Really glad how this stuff turned out. Flat color, not a super rough texture, and smooth enough to dust off easily

I love duratex! This is how I always wanted to use it, but haven't gotten a good spray gun yet. Some day I hope to repaint my old EAW SB180's and DS123's the same way.

My boss would kill me if something I build had these gaps. But for a non professional this was really good. Even tho you can make almost everything out of it, mdf is a bitch when it comes to the painting. Very well made boxes, they look awesome.
Yea that first angled box was off just slightly on one edge and it threw a few others off due to that. Everything else fit up pretty nice for me though. And yes, MDF does suck to paint lol. Thanks man

looks nice, I get very similar results spraying with truck bed coating, surface is a little rough which makes wiping off the surface not the greatest, then I sprayed some thick glaze over the coating and it looked fantastic and cleaning off was easy.

You put a lot of thought into the design, materials, and construction of these speakers. Bravo.
A few questions and comments:
1) Could you have used the stronger body filler only?
Any specific reason/s to use the spackle also?
2) Have you found or heard of,
copper.. or better-
gold-plated copper
contact components for the
Speakon connectors?
3) Silver solder instead of crimp connections throughout?
I’ve found that sometimes,
the bond, the connection those crimps make are not as complete
as highly conductive solder, wetted well.
Additionally,
the copper wire can/will
oxidize using them.
Lastly, just from current transmission,
there can be
micro- loosening of those connections over a long time span;
but more so from the vibration
of drivers, individually and collectively.
Crimps for ease of removal?
Mm, a touch with a hot iron
is quite fast also,
and better connection the whole time?
Overall, eliminate 30-40?connectors, of inferior metal?
Imagine the weight reduction..
for each speaker..
by removing all that hardware!

Thank you Anthony! Wow, let me see if I can get to all of this lol...
1. Yes you can use the body filler for everything. Since I wasn't doing any major filling, the spackle is just easier to work with (no mixing with hardener) and sands very easily. And it's cheaper. Easy cleanup... You get the idea. It's really just filling in the porous edges.
2. I have only seen the normal speakon connectors, none with gold plated or copper connections. Many use these for high powered subs (as I will be doing as well) and don't seem to have had issues. I actually was worried about this myself but I have not been able to find anything on them limiting current/wattage.
3. That weight reduction is temping... 😉 And yea I have seen where people like to solder the connections instead of connectors. I personally just found it easier for installing and removing if need be. There is the risk of them coming off, but I try to avoid that by compressing the female connectors before installing for a tighter fit. It could still happen though... I have not seen anything where it directly effects sound quality though. But I may have just not come across that information yet :)
4. 12 gauge is installed :) the 14 was available at the time and needed to order more 12 gauge to complete all of the connectors.
I don't take criticism negatively. Everyone has their ways (or just don't know what they are talking about lol!). I've learned a lot from people commenting on videos so I welcome the comments. Appreciate the kinds words and I'll have a demo/impressions video out soon!

Very nice work. One sugestion, too late now but when assembling speaker/connector fasteners use locktite (medium) or equivalent to be sure everything stays tight just like for mechanical purposes.
I think I like the textured roller grade paint over the sprayed. I do like the smooth look on a speaker cabinet but I'm afraid of reflections

I'm just going to be using Yamaha YPAO for now, but may go with something like the new Dayton EQ box they just came out with in the future. I will probably play with REW and use the receiver to adjust a few things as well for the time being

I watched another video where a guy rolled on DuraTex and it looked really, really bad. The spray gun method you used seems to deliver superb results, and I will go this route if I decide to build my own speakers. I'm really looking forward to your impressions on the 1299's. I have been eyeing the 1099 kit myself, but maybe the 12s will be more "future proof". Make sure that you give us a sound test at the "sweet spot" so that we hear what you hear at the proper listening position. I saw another video where the guy was 2 feet from the speaker and all you heard was mid-bass.

I'll share an awesome trick for painting over MDF: mix 50% Elmer's white glue with 50% water and brush on MDF with a chip brush. Allow drying time before paint. This will seal the wood so it doesn't absorb the paint. *may need second coat

Thanks Rick. Absolutely. Body work is a little more involved obviously, but similar processes. I grew up doing that and painting cars with my dad. Great skills to know!
@@LifeofBliss absolutely i was taught at first in high school after that git a job with a friends father and I been doing it off and on fir iver 30 years but i have to say blending is the most tedious. And also ghosting its super hard I only screwed up over 25 x lol but practice makes perfect we only learn from our mistakes but don't want to do too many mistakes as it gets costly lol but i have to tell you great vid also while doing your sanding u say u don't like using air or electric type tools Maybe try using a straight line air sander this way u won't have any ginger grooves or uneven spots like u would get from other electric or air sanders or have you already tried that and just prefer the burn in the shoulders lol oh by the way as I was touring you tube I came across your channel and now im a new subscriber and but got double thumbs up from the peanut gallery here lol chat soon

Great job man. They look cool. You can’t really get a more CUSTOM HT speaker, when your building one of the surrounds at a more of an acute angle than the other to fit your room. Cool. I like it😀.

well final result is very fantastic
I love this build and congratulate you on the quality of work. I have one concern though. I can almost guarantee that the gauge wire used isn't adequate enough not only for the run from the crossover to each individual driver but certainly not large enough for the speacon connection. With the money invested, I suggest buying quality lower gauge speaker wire. Thanks for the time and work you invested to produce great content for us to enjoy!
Thanks man. You don't think the 14 gauge will be enough? I ran 12 gauge in wall and only have a 125w per channel amp for the mains. They have a sensitivity of 99 db so these really won't take a lot of power to get loud. That's a pretty short run of 14 gauge too.
It should be ok then. Maybe run the 12 gauge from the wall and AVR, atleast up to the speakon connectors. Audiophiles would tell you it isn't adequate.

Great video, I found it looking for HVLP Duratex application, not sure if I want to go for a Turbine based AIO sprayer since I only need it for this one project, or get a gun and compressor like you used. Building the 18" Ultimax Sub kit from Parts Express, but this makes me want to build all my speakers at one point in the future lol.
Having a compressor is nice for many things... having a spray gun is nice too even for the few and far between diy projects around the house. Spraying is much smoother than rolling things

Thanks man. Had to take a break for a bit but starting back up now. I have the dewalt 15 gallon compressor. It's an upright with wheels to roll around. They've updated since the model I have, but it's still very similar

Instead of spackling since it may crack or shift because of the woofers over time. I would think epoxy would be better
I have body filler that is stronger and easier to sand if needed, probably wouldn't use epoxy personally... the spackle hasn't cracked though. It mainly was there to just fill in nail holes and any slight cracks, not really as a leveler. I tried to sand those edges down smooth instead of fill any low spots
How to know if you have a good system

Good job! But i have one question: why you didn't make separate enclosures for mids and woofers? Woofers will interfere with mids by pumping air.
Thanks man. I should have gone over that in the video. The mids are a sealed back design. No need too separate.
If I'm not mistaken that compression driver that was screwed to the back of that woofer serves as a tweeter for the surrounds?

hello sir, i find your videos very informative and entertaining as well..but i am wondering how you interconnected the different speakers incorporating a dividing network .. can you show us in schematic diagram all the interconnection of all the speakers in each box.. reason why i want to find our how is impedance matching between the speaker system and the amplifier..i just would like to know if there would be risk of damaging the amplifier if multiple speakers are already installed.
Everything is wired in parallel off of the crossover. I go over that in the crossover assembly or final assembly video. Final load is 8 ohms. You can find more specific information about the drivers and specs on DIY Sound Groups website. As long as your final load is within the amplifiers capabilities (usually 4 ohms or higher) you should be fine wiring multiple speakers together

I have a question for you. a crossover does only divide the frequencies or it amplifies and divides the frequencies. also an 800 watt example crossover is an 800 watt of what. thank you for your reply
The crossover just sends the correct frequencies to the correct speakers. Amplification is done prior to the crossover. No sure exactly what you mean by your second question, but the crossover will also divide the power going to the speakers, with the woofers usually taking up most of the power
So i really like this build:) . I just have to ask doh: Why are the slant off the speakers different? My OCD is killing me right now.
They were different distances from the seating, one needed to be slanted more since it was closer

Man I tried this, and the hopper gun is spraying out large droplets in a huge spray pattern. Changing the pressure doesn't seem to help much. Now I have a soaked mess 😟 I diluted the Duaretex with water too. Not sure what to do
Umm... was it an hvlp gun like I used? You can grab a cheapo one at harbor freight for under $30 for this type of application. Sounds like a gun issue you're having... ALWAYS do a test panel btw. Never start on your main project without confirming the spray pattern is what you want. Good luck man...

You would have to reach out to them for possible shipping to your country. These are very efficient speakers, so not a lot of power is needed. If you used a higher power pro amplifier, they can reach over 120db, so very loud!
I was wondering how bad Duratex hangs in the air when spraying? Also did you notice if it got on everything in your garage because of that?
Having worked in a body shop in the past I would never consider painting automotive paint in a garage without massive ventilation. Duratex however is quite different than any automotive paint I am familiar with.

It's not bad at all like auto paints. I used to do a lot of automotive painting in the past and the duratex is very different. Technique is the same, but it doesn't aresolize as much and hang in the air. A lot of it dries before hitting the ground too so it leaves behind some dust, though some of it is still wet and will coat the floor. That's why I put plastic down everywhere. But as far as other tools and areas of the garage outside of the spray zone, there was very little overspray that traveled that far

Question, did you connect the two 1299, 12'' low frequency speakers in series or in parallel before connecting to the crossover, same question for all the speakers how did you connect them before hooking them up to the crossover, please explain, I'm actually an amateur trying some DIY thanks.
Everything was hooked up in parallel for these speakers to the crossover.

Do you recommend using one of those electric hvlp guns? If so, which one?
I had a bad experience with a cheapo $50 Wagner. They make some nicer ones that cost more, I just prefer an hvlp air gun since I have a compressor
