Even if you have a large physical collection, I'll highly recommend you to mod your device and install a bigger hard drive.
As someone who owned an original Xbox and lived through that era it was such a fantastic time to be a gamer. That system was so powerful for its time and offered so many new experiences nobody had ever had before in gaming. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 360, the Xbox one and now the Xbox series X, but I have to say some of my most favorite getting memories were with the original Xbox.
Don’t forget you have to manually enable progressive scan mode on the OG Xbox. You do that by being on the Home Screen and on your controller hold both triggers and press both analog sticks in at the same time. Screen should flash and colors will be more vibrant and everything will look sharper.
When I bought mine I specifically asked to see the bottoms to see what year mine was made and luckily I found one made after 2005, and as a plus I got the best DVD drive that you can get when you buy an Xbox, I don't remember the name
Even though the PS2 was my go to at the time, there always was something about the original Xbox that always felt special to me for some reason that still holds true to this day.
I always thought it was good to collect the OG XB games, with so many being playable on the 360, Xbox One, and now Series X. All the original Bioware games, Splinter Cell series, and the best versions of so many games from that gen. There's still a lot to love.
Keep the lightening skin. One of the Xboxes that I just bought in a lot for repair had a MP3 playlist from the early 2000's, stuff like..Linkin park/Mudvayne/Korn/POD...it was pretty awesome to listen though it, thinking what it must of been like at the time to load it up for the OG user. I was in my early 20's at the time of the console launch, so it was like a time machine for me too. Great video, I think you really hit the point as think thing being a really good answer to PC gaming. I was a console gamer from Atari 2600-PS1 and then moved out and was in that part of my life, got into PC gaming because I bought a P3 for college work and skipped out on the release of the Xbox. I did pick one up around 2004 from my room mate...played mostly Halo and Ninja Gaiden before selling it to get a sweet new white 360..
I was 17 when the OG Xbox came out in 2001... Man, those were some better, simpler times, I'll tell you what. There was none of this pay-to-win bs, no overly long download wait times, and sure as hell no loot box nonsense. It was just me and the boys, a pizza from Domino's and games like Halo 1 and the OG Star Wars Battlefront after a crappy movie from Blockbuster. Damn, those were the days and I miss the fug outta them.
The 6th generation is by far the oldest generation you can easily hook up to a lot of modern TVs without modification and with generally good results. Component output options on most of the systems, and (even better) the VGA output option on the Dreamcast! And a few DC games even had the option to set a widescreen aspect ratio, since the system didn’t know whether it was on a widescreen TV or not (there were some 480i and 480p widescreen TVs in the early days, but no handshaking that communicated that to the game console). But, yes, HDMI-only TVs are becoming more common so mods like this will have more and more value going forward. But I have been gaming since the first generation (still have my old Pong clone that you hook up to the TV with an RF modulator!) and I appreciate that it’s possible at all to hook many of these 6th-gen systems up to many new TVs still, with the Dreamcast over VGA producing a progressive signal making it (I think) the oldest system to be able to do so without modification.
Reminder: on a PAL xbox you NEED to install a modchip (or softmod it at least) in order to set the console to NTSC, as a software lock prevents you from enabling the HD resolution settings otherwise.
YES!! My favorite Spawnwave videos - techy stuff! I still have my modded OG Xbox with a 250gb hdd. Tons of emulators etc, and some ripped xbox discs too. Would love to see any collab with MVG!! Make that happen!
I bought a xbox that was softmodded with Unleash X and given a 1TB SDD hard drive. I don't have the technical skills to make a hard HDMI change, but I did the the component cables AND a top quality HDMI converter - both of which look fantastic. I installed most of the games in the Xbox library onto the hard drive. I still own all of my original game discs and boxes (over 40 in total) from my days playing it originally. However, having games installed directly to the hard drive without worry of disc read errors or maintenance and NONE of the money of buying a physical disc ever going into the hands of the creators anyway, i have no remorse for downloading the remaining titles I don't own physical copies of.
I was on a vacation up in Washington and we were in the town that Twilight was based off of. We went in this big grocery/clothing store and at the front they were selling video games on what looked like a magazine stand. But these games were for the original Xbox and they still had the plastic on it peeling off like they have been in that spot for the last 20 years.
It lived its life with the skin, keep it on. I don’t know if this had to do with the Mortal Kombat movie or OG Xbox games in general but I know Shaolin Monks went up in price a small bit but then it went back down again. I don’t see Xbox games getting near as expensive as GameCube games. Everyone had a GameCube as a kid and these prices are nostalgia driven as those kids are now 20 years older with disposable income. I really don’t think a lot of kids had Xboxes back then and it was mostly people who were already enthusiasts. It is a great system if you want to collect games to actually play them instead of trying to have a collection to resell later on.
The GameCube was the 2nd worst selling system of that generation next to the Dreamcast, though the Xbix and GameCube only had a margin of 2 million between them

I snagged one a couple of years ago because the Goodwill Outlet was selling it for $5, apparently the orange ring of annoyance at not having an AV cable plugged in was confused for a RROD. Snagged a near mint condition Duke controller, a beat up enough to test cable, bringing it to about $15. Scored a mod chip and gave it a full cleaning (and clock cap removal). The DVD laser merely needed a quick cleaning, and it was golden.
I'd be very interested to see how the HDD gets replaced (possibly with an SSD). I am considering doing that myself. And personally I'd remove that lightning skin. Original Xbox all the way.
Is there any point using an SSD? The original HDD was IDE so you have to get an adapter to SATA but the data transfer rate will still top out at IDE speed of approx. 130MB/s. Is my reasoning correct?
@@ProffyChaos correct, but I'm sure the consideration is not speed but drive life... how much life does a 20 year old 8GB HDD have left in it? @@SeeJayPlayGames good point about the longevity. I changed it for a 2TB HDD but I think the amount I play the OG Xbox I am not really at risk of wearing it out.
Back in 2019, I got back into collecting original Xbox games after hooking it up with HD cables. It blew my mind how good the games looked. It's now my console of choice for 3rd party games from that generation.
I love my original Xbox, and I generally buy games on the Xbox to save money over buying the PS2 or GC versions. Definitely a great system to collect for if you are on a budget, and still want a lot of awesome games.
Plus, multiplatform releases are almost always the best on Xbox. Which is hilarious: bargain prices compared to PS2 and GC while being the best versions, sometimes to a generational degree (Splinter Cell, Just Cause, etc).
I literally JUST got an OG xbox this week! What a crazy coincidence. I was always a Sony pony, but wanted to try some rare exclusives I never played that people like.
I don't recommend doing this. With HDMI, the colors tend to be darker making it harder to see in dark areas in games. I think it is something to do with how the HDMI conversion occurs. For this reason, the video quality is better with YPBPR cables. Not only this issue, but you also end up being restricted to HDTVs unless you get an HDMI to RCA adapter.
@@mepm the video signal is encoded in XboxHD+ pixel data bus and is upscaled with interpolation. Because of the upscaling, blacks are going to be darker as well as the other colors. Also, it claims "crystal clear" Dolby Digital audio but the reality is that it relies on your TV and is already an option in the settings menu of stock Xboxes. No idea why they claim that as a feature
I had actually started repurchasing some of my old Xbox games that I played growing up! Kept all my games in a stack that sat on top of the dresser so they all became destroyed. So I've been trying to find my favorites with the case and book online. Glad I got a bunch of my favorites before you posted this one!!
Still have my OG Xbox back in my parents house. I remember moding custom DVD drive to backup games to upgraded HDD and Ive installed external USB port so I can hook up any USB things like keyboard, mouse or usb storage to move divx and other media easily between PCs/friends. Made it my home cinema multimedia player/console. Great box ahead of its time back then!
I will still be using my Neoya X2VGA+ to my XBOX. It did work very well back in the days and still getting the job done now. My plans for my XBOX is upgrade that 120 gb hard drive with bigger one and do proper deep clean on it after it has been in storage for around 10 years. I have removed that leaky cap in it. No damage lucky enough. Nice video!
makes sense for archiving purposes since not all of xbox OG library made made it to backwards due to technical and mostly legal reasons while unknown when they'll return to adding to the catalog
I find it bs that you need licensing for making a game backwards compatible. Its just letting the disk that has already been paid for licensing work on the new system
I would LOVE to see what mods you can do to turn OGXbox into a beefy console. HDMi, mod chip, sata, bigger memory, I've never seen it done and explained. Hell yeah I wanna see this.
I picked up an xbox from a goodwill for $10 in 2020. I've had so much fun playing games like Midtown Madness 3, Ninja Gaiden and Halo on it. I should really try that HDMI mod.
I’m lucky enough to have a really good game store nearby. They always have a ton of original Xbox’s in stock as well as pretty much any console you want. I saw an Atari Jaguar there the other day.
Just wish it had a larger game library myself. PS2 had any and everything you could want but the Xbox always amazed me at my cousins on his HD tv. We played a bit more PS2 bc of the library and amount of games available plus ps1 games, but Halo 2 and racing games we always used his Xbox bc of the better look
I've had two of these self-destruct on me. That clock capacitor always leaks and ruins the board. But I don't have the skills to replace it or know anyone who can.
if you buy a pre 1.6 motherboard revision xbox you can just wiggle or snap of the clock capacitor. it doesnt matter if the legs of the capacitor are still there if the capacitor are gone
Thank you pointing out how easy it is to open the Xbox. I was watching an Xbox 360 disassembly tutorial one time and the guy was saying how much easier it is to get a 360 open than an original Xbox and I'm thinking "you've opened them, yourself, so you know how untrue what you're saying is". So weird. What other console is this easy to take apart, (excluding earlier generations, I know the PS1 and N64 were easy to take apart).
I gave mine to my niece years back... kinda regret it since i can't play PSO on xbox without that HDD lol. You had to login at least once to even get into the single player for whatever reason.
A collab with MVG would be awesome. Edit: I have never seen a OG Xbox in action (wasn't sold where I live), but man that bootscreen and menu looks crisp.
I think it would be much easier to just get some HD Component cables for your OG Xbox and run that to a Component to HDMI adapter then to your TV. I don't need this adapter because I run it to a Component Splitter/Selector then to my HD Projector that has Component input. Buying a modded OG Xbox for cheap... doing a 1TB HD swap.... then loading it with all your collection is good times. Was playing some Rainbow Six 3 earlier today.
I just recently got my third original Xbox. Completely serviced, has a OpenXenium Modchip and it has a wii2hdmi internal mod that has a nice image. Nice 500gb drive with ide to SATA Adapter and 80 pin ide cable. I love the Xbox it has a really nice library and thanks to Insignia we can finally experience proper multiplayer on the og xbox since the shutdown of Xbox Live 1.0 (i know xlink Kai is a thing but some games don't even have system link)

Great video. Og xbox still plays in my house today...
Would love to see a fully modded updates version!!
Seeing you and MVG collaborate would be an amazing Christmas gift!!!
Spawn Wave a decade from now:
Why I’m buying the first wheel ever invented in 2031
Back in 2019, I got back into collecting original Xbox games after hooking it up with HD cables.
@@anen9332 haha totally forgot to mention this! Yes!
@@SuperGameHulk Collecting for Xbox 360 is cheaper than the original Xbox at this moment
@@Darkscenes-jp4ge alright
Got my Xbox on release date back in 2001 and still playing it. Even got the Xbox live beta tester stuff.
Never had an Xbox before but I'm hoping I can get the series x!
I literally JUST got an OG xbox this week! What a crazy coincidence. I was always a Sony pony, but wanted to try some rare exclusives I never played that people like.
I grabbed Fable, Panzer Dragoon Orta, KOTOR2, Crazy Taxi 3, Jet Set Radio Future, Castlevania, & DoA Paradise.
This isn't a conversion it's straight digital to digital output.
Dude I just picked up one for 60 bucks. I was lucky to find it especially for $60 when I’ve seen prices have gone up to like $100 plus
That collab between MVG and you seems like a great idea! Go for it 👍🏼
I'd like to see you team up w MVG and upgrade every old console to the max for sure

“Why I’m facilitating the driving up of the cost of used Xbox’s on eBay.”
An OG XBOX collaboration with MVG would be fantastic. The input from both would be interesting and entertaining. You guys busy tomorrow?
I have 8 original Xbox consoles in storage. Still haven't gotten around to cleaning them up. But this is a good reminder to get on it.
I’m guessing that skin is because the original owner was a Pantera fan.
Morrowind on the OG Xbox I must have put at least 300 hours into it! Loved being away from the PC and playing on a big screen, well 32" at the time!

I find it bs that you need licensing for making a game backwards compatible. Its just letting the disk that has already been paid for licensing work on the new system
You have too upgrade the harddrive so you can download every game it can be done then its disc less console
I would LOVE to see what mods you can do to turn OGXbox into a beefy console. HDMi, mod chip, sata, bigger memory, I've never seen it done and explained. Hell yeah I wanna see this.

Softmod it !! You can also upgrade the hard drive quite easy and play emulators, have games saved to hard drive, etc
Great video! I do have to say with Time Splitters Futre Perfect being BC. That is the most ultimate BC needed in my book! And keep up the great work.
Maybe they were a fan of Dimebag Darrel/Pantera? Looks a lot like the "Dean From Hell" guitar.

I want to see RGT85 and /or DreamCastGuy open up a console and use a soldering iron
I've had two of these self-destruct on me. That clock capacitor always leaks and ruins the board. But I don't have the skills to replace it or know anyone who can.
if you buy a pre 1.6 motherboard revision xbox you can just wiggle or snap of the clock capacitor. it doesnt matter if the legs of the capacitor are still there if the capacitor are gone
exactly as long as the capacitor is gone your fine
Thank you pointing out how easy it is to open the Xbox. I was watching an Xbox 360 disassembly tutorial one time and the guy was saying how much easier it is to get a 360 open than an original Xbox and I'm thinking "you've opened them, yourself, so you know how untrue what you're saying is". So weird. What other console is this easy to take apart, (excluding earlier generations, I know the PS1 and N64 were easy to take apart).
i would love to see a huge ultimate original xbox build. would love to see what you could do to enhance an already great console
I gave mine to my niece years back... kinda regret it since i can't play PSO on xbox without that HDD lol. You had to login at least once to even get into the single player for whatever reason.
I have an orginal Xbox. Where can I get my modified?
A collab with MVG would be awesome.
Edit: I have never seen a OG Xbox in action (wasn't sold where I live), but man that bootscreen and menu looks crisp.
Great video. I always really enjoy your more "hands on" videos like this. Hopefully not too long to wait until the next one :)
PLEASE PLEASEEEE Do another video going all out on the xbox! This system is worth it for sure.
Great video. I’ve still got a version one sealed in my loft. Might even be a ver 2 but it’s all brand new.
Man .. the fact my favorite 3D Castlevania is stranded on the OG Xbox pains me, I wish Konami allowed Microsoft to make it backwards compatible
curse of darkness is also on ps2.
@@kurokoro that is correct, but I do not own a PS2, and the Xbox version ran better, plus my nostalgia goes to this version
Damn. That picture looks so crisp. I'm using a Retrotink to convert the analog component HD to HDMI, but this mod looks way better.
Hmm cool to know Jon and I both first took an Xbox apart to get interested in console repair/modifications
The lightning decals are awesome, I'd definitely leave them on.

Are there any achievement system in old Xbox?
No, that was introduced in the Xbox 360
I just recently got my third original Xbox. Completely serviced, has a OpenXenium Modchip and it has a wii2hdmi internal mod that has a nice image. Nice 500gb drive with ide to SATA Adapter and 80 pin ide cable.
I love the Xbox it has a really nice library and thanks to Insignia we can finally experience proper multiplayer on the og xbox since the shutdown of Xbox Live 1.0 (i know xlink Kai is a thing but some games don't even have system link)
The collaboration with MVG sounds cool.
Also, I think you should leave the lightning bolts on it. It's a part of history and it doesn't look bad.
I have one of these ordered and it will be my first console mod. I've done other electronic soldering before but I am still nervous. This video was Awesome! Thanks.

You didnt mention if you took out or replaced the clock capacitor
Yo this was a dope video dude. And I personally dig that blue lightening g skin. I also kept a good amount of my og xbox games. Fifa 2003 is def one of the funnest soccer experiences one can have. And four player? Forget about it! Awesome fun!
I bought a modded 1.1 console and replaced the hard drive. It's been working great since!

I bought one in mint condition in 2020. I bought the POUND HD Link HDMi converter for the XBox and I play Amped 2 at 720p upscaled to 1440p with the mClassic and my TV does the upscaling to 4K itself. It looks insane.
Can't believe this came out before I was born. I still have mine, but I haven't used it in a while.
Just got mine from my moms. Hasn't been used over a decade and works just fine. Got most of the games I want for it. Only game I need is def jam ffny. Game runs for like $150 now. Hopefully the old copy is still at my moms.
Can't believe these games are nearly 20 years old. They look amazing!
I had the og Xbox as a kid so many memories playing Halo, Oddworld, PGR, and Gta and my fav fantasy games on xbox Enclave and Elder Scrolls.
i would love to see a spawn wave MVG collab! I loved the OG Xbox, i definitely will be collecting some of my old favorite games for sure
When I read the title my first thought was "uhhhhh because they're amazing" Ninja Gaiden Black on a PVM is simply stunningly good looking.
Have you ever tried the garage door opener mod? It let you turn the console on using your controller. I believe it was the inspiration for the future of using your controller to turn on your console.
