    If using emustation, have the dash on E and the emulators, roms and media on the larger partition. That’s why you’re seeing the long load times into the rom lists. As it’s having to seek to a further point on the hdd plater.
    I don’t recommend running it from F or G. E and C are fine.

    • @FrameRater
      @FrameRater  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Thanks for the insight! I actually have been booting XBMC-Emustation from the E drive, but maybe it's different for everyone?

    • @JCRocky5
      @JCRocky5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@FrameRater sata adaptors and not using 80 wire IDE cables can affect speeds on of the drives. But generally running stuff from E should be quick. As it’s the first partition on the hdd platter.
      Basically when you select a title from the carousel it builds the menu you see when it loads in, using the gamelist.xml for that system. So if the drive is full it can take it’s time as it has to seek to find stuff then write it. But most I have had on my 640GB drive is 5 seconds for over 2000 roms.
      Also the latest stable build has a lot of improvements and speed increases on stuff.

    I expected a bit more for Xbox Emulation.
    Probably the major reason you want to use an OG Xbox today is if you really want solid N64, Sharp X68000 and CoinOp Emulation on a console you already own.
    But many thanks for this series. It is a life saver.

    3:40 keep in mind the only official way to output above 480p on the xbox was with a special component cable adapter called the advanced av pack. Other than that there's the XOSVP which outputs coax audio and component video, which you can retrotink/OSSC box into HDMI. This method will let you output digital audio from the Xbox, and an HDMI adapter on a version of the XBOX that's not compatible with the HDMI adapter will have all sorts of weird problems like this. For instance, on a v1.0 Xbox I own, the HDMI adapter, and even cheap 3rd party adapters work fine(as well as they ever could at least), but on v1.2 and v1.4 Xboxes, I get audio humming in one channel or dropouts on some TVs.

    Glad there's a video like this. I'm a newbie to your content but I've always wanted to mod my XBox for emulation. There's a few listings in Facebook groups for stupid-expensive XBoxes just because the modding has been done already, and I'd always heard it wasn't really so difficult that it was worth paying that much more to not put in the effort it takes to DIY.
    But what I really wanted to tell you was I had a similar issue to yours when I used my Elgato (just the HD Capture, not the 60FPS or 4K versions). What I had to do was use a convertor and change the format to AVI or MP4. Even if it was already in that format. And I had to use a separate convertor program. If I tried to just process the video through my editing software and use the newly made duplicate video, it still had issues.
    I have an AverMedia Live Capture device now so it's been a minute since I messed with the Elgato. But I saw your footage and mine would do the same thing. Extra step and all, but that's what worked for me.

    When you showed the doom footage with the pitched up audio, it reminded me of this. The sound of the imps getting hurt is actually a clip of a well known stock scream, but pitched down. I used to hear it a lot in newgrounds animations.

    Another fantastic video! Really glad to see you growing as a channel. OG XBOX was magic back in the mid 2000's. It was my first all-in-one emulation/nostalgia box. Someone else soft modded and configured it for me, so the details were all arcane black magic to me. Now, I am currently building another OG XBOX all on my own. Like a big boy. And loving it.

    I need to reup on my Xbox hardware. Used to have the first two systems as a teen and now nothing - they are cool systems with so many possibilities. I just consider retro exclusives and stuff usually first when picking a console to grab up lately and there aren't many on Xbox that can't be bought on PC. But with emulation and some of the other stuff that isn't on PC but is on a few consoles from that era etc opens up a lot for sure. Great vid! Also, that audio bug in capture may have something to do with bitrates? Idk much about Elgato but 480p is weird on older consoles. Can you deinterlace? 480i with deinterlacing may make more sense. A OSSC or something may be needed tho ?

    Those intros on the C64 games were really an integral part of the experience for us that grew up with the machine. Granted they were added to pirated copies of the games, they often provided bugfixes and trainers (cheats) that were very much appreciated to balance games. Most of C64 file images on the net were dumped from those copies more than 20 years ago. You can probably find unaltered copies (disk images having the .g64 extension instead of the usual .d64), but I think it's best to check if a cartridge image (.crt) of any game you might be interested in is available: instant loading and usually no cracktros.

    What are the odds Rocky5 would release a new update for XBMC Emustation just before this video dropped?! Great video nonetheless. I always learn something, and I use my og Xbox daily. I actually tried the Virtual Boy emulator for the first time the other day and I was similarly surprised that it worked so poorly.
    Only other thing I'd say is that Rocky5 generally recommends the RessurectionXtras ROM sets. They're easy to get hold of, although the N64 stuff seems harder for some reason, and the Sega CD set doesn't work well with the default emulator, at least in my experience.

I think mine is the Wii U, once properly hacked it's nearly an all-in-one Nintendo system excluding the Switch, you can even stream your 3DS directly to the Wii U now with ntrview. So couple capabilities to play almost the entire Nintendo back catalog through the Wii U, you also get PS1, PSP, Genesis, Master System, Turbografx, Neo Geo, Atari, Arcade, Game Gear, Sega CD, Lynx, etc. Not to mention you get both Wii U homebrew and all the original Wii's homebrew as well.

    33:44 - I don't know much about the Spectrum, but I think I know enough to say that it "not responding past the title screen" might just be it taking an eternity to load. My basis for this is the colors still going berserk around the image because if my memory has it right the image is just to give you something interesting to look at while the game loads (the process of which is represented by the berserk colors because computers are funny things) which tends to be pokey when you're loading the entirety of the game into RAM from a cassette tape. That is to say, it's a feature. Or at least it might be, in this case maybe emulating a little too accurately as it were. Might be the same for Metal Gear, but I'm not speaking on authority because I couldn't tell you why some games would skip the rigmarole and others wouldn't. Maybe varying dumps or something.

I thought for years I didn't have a modded Xbox but I recently found out my brother's is soft modded and has very little storage left. I don't have a memory card even tho it is my first console and for my most recently gained console, the PS2, I got 2 (if I remember). Still, wish I could transfer the games on my console already to one or a flash card or a USB. Also, I can't even FTP due to the router I think.

    I was big into emulation on the Dreamcast around 2000-2001. I had used emulators on the PC for awhile at that point but to be able to play NES games on my Dreamcast on my TV was amazing! It was just like using the original console! Besides NES there was also a Genesis emulator with terrible sound and a super slow SNES emulator. Not long after getting my Xbox I discovered the Xbox emulation scene and was blown away! Where it had taken awhile for even the NES emulator on Dreamcast to get good the Xbox had tons of fullspeed emulators almost immediately. SNES,Genesis CD/32x,N64! I modded my Xbox with some no solder modchip they had back before softmods. It just screwed onto the motherboard. I did that, upgraded the HDD and loaded it up with emulators and roms and it was great! Emulation on PC was ok but being able to play all these games on my CRT TV was so much better. I had a 32 inch CRT with component and had the Xbox component cables and the games looked amazing. I remember playing through Sonic 2 sometime around Christmas 2002 and was amazed with how crisp and clear it looked. I remember being up really late one night playing Darkwing Duck on an NES emulator on Xbox and thinking how awesome it was. At one point my older brother saw me playing a Super Nintendo game on the Xbox and said "You've got the most powerful console there is and you're using it to play this old stuff!" He didn't get it lol. It is about what is fun not what is current. I also had plenty of Xbox games. There was a service called Gamefly where for around $15 a month you could rent games online and have them sent to you in the mail like Netflix but with games. You could make a list of what games you wanted and they went send those two then when you sent those back they would send the next two on the list. I would get home from school get the games out of the mailbox pop them into the Xbox and copy them to the hard drive then send them back the same day. I think I only had Gamefly for a few months but I got so many games from it. Well this was a long comment but when it comes to talking about the old days I could go on for hours!

    For the odyssey 2, it’s probably a matter of using the wrong controller. The odyssey was super early as a console, so they simply did not have the concept of first player and second player. Instead they had left controller and right controller, which caused a lot of developers to decide on their own which controller to use for the first player. In a lot of emulators for the console this now translates into using the first controller input as the left controller, and the second controller for the right controller.

    Retroarch on xbox has most updated emulators to at least to most of 16 bit systems and gba works pretty. Snes 9x next is more accurate than the zsnes on xbox especially it comes to sound emulation for example, since zsnes sounds awful for certain games like most of the square rpgs or earthworm jim 2. I wonder if the front end shown in the video could use libretro cores for better performance and accuracy.

    Framerater, in regard to n64 emulation the "earthworm james" n64 pack is preconfigured (settings, etc) and many onlinbe view it as the best way to play n64 roms on the og xbox. Apparently, titles like conker even work on it. I haven't had success, but peeps on youtube have it running smoothly. Have you checked it out?

    The original Xbox is my preferred way to play a lot of older arcade games and consoles that I don't have. They look great on a CRT, and the emulators are generally of much better quality than those on the Wii despite having similar specs.

    So the commodore 64 emulator automatically sets the video to PAL, if you don't have a PAL TV then you have to go into the settings and change the setting called "always use Xbox refresh rate" to YES.
    If you don't change that then you'll have to select NTSC every single time before you start the games.
    And it doesn't work for PAL users unless you change the setting "Force PAL50" to YES.
    After you sort out the NTSC / PAL problems, it will work fine.

  • @ShougHell
    @ShougHell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For Sonic 2 MS's music playing too fast, I think it might be because it's the PAL version, as I believe the Master System version of the game wasn't released outside of Europe and Brazil.
