I Bought An Xbox 360 In 2021...Here's Why

  • The Xbox 360 released in 2005 making it a pretty old system now in 2021. With Microsoft pushing hard for backwards compatibility for their current platforms the Xbox 360 has pretty much faded away, but recently it's become harder to find the system in working condition at a good price.

If anyone is planning on getting a 360. Please find one that is a phat Jasper model from 2009-2010. Those are the most reliable and never red ring due to a general hardware failure. Slims are fine, too. Just dont buy a 360 from 2005-2008.

Gotcha. I found an Xbox Elite at a Good Will for $20 alone. It was barley dust on the outside, but I still need to check it out inside. I think its barely dusty

The Falcon models are also rather reliable. Pulled one from the trash and after a good clean it has worked consistently. Avoid the Xenon’s and Zephyr’s.

@@aegonthedragon7303 Yeah Falcons are alright, too. If you want to pick up a Falcon you gotta make sure it hasn't had a history of red ringing. Typically if there are any Falcons out there that have never red ringed, then itll probably never red ring.

That disk drive problem is of course very common with optical disk drives in general, not just X360 or even console disk drives. Question: I used to repair these drives back in the day, and (when I didn't have replacement bands) I did just wash them off for a while but then I started using chemical rubber renewer on them. Thing is, since if it fails again it'd be after some period of time (and even if it came back I wouldn't be likely to see it), I never really knew if the renewer was making a difference or it was just snake oil. Do you have any experience with that stuff, and did you notice if it helped longevity any?

As an older gamer, I had the white fan noisy beast at launch. I went through 4 Xbox's (baked 2 of them) until the black glossy version came out, the only one still alive. I still rescue them from thrifting, I see a lot of white ones out there but usually skip them due to RROD. I have kept a cosmetically sound white one with a broken disc drive that I can easily fix.
Funny thing is...last time I was at Goodwill outlet, I saw this kid, maybe 19-20yrs old..pick up a white HDMI 360 that I just passed on, he shows it to his friend in excitement "Look..it's one of those old Xbox's, I think it's pretty rare!". I felt sort of old..lol.
You are on to something about this being a collectable retro console at some point...like I said, they are getting thrown away on a regular basis..it's only a matter of time before they get low in numbers and the crowd that grew up with them as kids, gets older and nostalgic about them. The demand/price goes up then.

I was shocked at how hard it was to find a system in good, CLEAN, working order. Every single system was scratched or filthy and forget about the controllers. I eventually found a new old stock system and despite the price, just went for it. I don't know what it says about the audience that bought 360s that they are all destroyed now but yeah, I'm having fun with it and really like the interface and how everything works in general on it.

It came out one year ahead of the competition and significantly cheaper than the PS3 for a few years, there were probably a lot of kids who got, PlayStation has more name recognition and its loyal fans waiting for it to come out eventually, many people that weren’t kids anymore, had had the previous generations and had the income too buy the new one, so my guess is that the 360 was hitting a younger demographic while the PS3 would mostly appeal to the older audience, until it got redesigns and price reductions, outselling the 360 at the end

I love the 360 but I don't consider the launch model to rappresent the best the console has to offer. The slim console is the sweet spot. It solved many problems the previous version had, such as loud fan noise and various issues due to frequent overheating, as well as introducing a built in Wi-Fi module. Xbox 360 is still supported today by Xbox Live, Xbox Live Gold, Games with Gold, and various apps such as TH-cam and Netflix. Also the online store is supported, and it boasts a great catalog, with many classics and hidden gems worth checking out. The graphics are not cutting edge, but many games still hold up today. It is also one of those consoles that is actually plug and play. It will do all the basic things without the need of an internet connection (play games, play music CDs, play movies on DVD). As all real consoles should be, it's better once connected to the internet, as opposed to useless unless connected.

Love the system! I have an Xbox 360 Final Fantasy Limited Edition "Super Elite" model (Its an white elite model but with an 120GB harddrive) and an
250GB model of the last one sold back in 2016 (purchased in 2016 as last one to find in stock in the entire town) as a future back-up console.
Not wanting to brag about it, but as I said I love the system and have collected over the years about 330 titles for the system including 20-25 Kinect games.
Most games are also purchased as used games. Just to sad there is no time playing all those games :-/. As an adult you don't have the time any longer.

I feel like the case of getting older consoles, etc varies depending on the country, it's quite easy in england as we have WeBuy/CeX, literally a place for selling your stuff just to be sold at a higher price to someone else, all the games, consoles and accessories are tested as well as being able to find thing such as phones and more; however, as stated, a lot of other countries will be looking on places like ebay (or if you don't live near to a place like CeX)

I have the Phat Arcade model, and now it is starting to heat up when I use it. It will freeze up after a few hours of play, but then powers back up and works fine after a restart. I'm scared to take it apart because I don't want to ruin it by my incompetence. Also, I have a slim that I bought on eBay as "junk" and totally rebuilt it. The problem is that I put a hard drive in it and then reset the whole system. Now I can't get Xbox live to download! Someone please help me! Thanks.

fyi, the red ring wasnt caused of overheating. It was the continous warm up-cool down effect, like when you bend a plastic over and over again it will eventually break. That happened with the earlier 360's as well.

Loved perfect dark zero! Still do! I've got a jasper phat model that I've got the fan sped up to highest speed via rgh mod. I bought that one brand new and just replaced the thermal paste. I put money mine will last. I did also do the xclamp fix when I 1st bought it. Going on 13 or 14 years old. Oh, I also added aluminum tape to extend the plastic shroud further down the heat sync. The aluminum tape on the disk drive may have been to reduce vibration noise.

I had that same model. Had the chrome tray cover. Even had the same problem opening the tray. Had to run my fingernail around the outside to get it to open. A friend of mine helped me take it apart (I didn't have the right bit for it and he was experienced in knowing what to clean). It seemed to open with no help without the outer shell, but when put back together it continued to get stuck. I never thought about that. Then a couple of years later I would get the white slim and I gave my old one to a different friend which I'm sure it got destroyed.

Growing up we always had Playstation, I was born in 1995 so as a younggg child we had a PS1 ( and Sega Game Gear ) and I had alot of fun with it forsure. Twisted Metal, Tomb Raider, Demolition Derby etc. Then in 2000 we got the PS2 and again great memories with that, esp bc I was getting old enough to actually play thru games. But in 7th grade ( 2006-2007 ) after doing work for an entire summer and first half of the school year, at holiday time I had enough money saved up to buy a 360 and I did and never turned back. I didn't have alot but I bought myself the Arcade model and Halo 3 and man.. I loved that thing. So many years of great memories. My friend had a PS3 and I just couldn't get into PS anymore. Unfortunately, my step dad was addicted to h when I was in high school and pawned it. But I did eventually get a One S in 2016 and luckily was able to get a Series X pre order last year and both have always been flawless. The Series X is amazing, hands down am happier with it than the PS5. I'm not a console wars fan boy either, I just prefer Xbox lol. But seeing these 360 videos brings back so many good memories man.

JOHN thank you man ! I've kept my similar 360 all this time for use with games that aren't backwards compatible etc........
........but, it's had the 'stuck drive tray' issue, so maybe 1 press of the eject button out of 100 might extend the tray (with some jiggery pockery).
So this is downright serendipitous - many thanks for the knowledge, I've learned quite a bit since subscribing 👍
