Mike Portnoy is an awesome guy! I met him once, wasn't even at a show. He was on vacation at the Outer Banks with his family like I was. He was standing in front of me in line paying for his kids to paddle boat and my wife and I were waiting to jet ski. I was like man he looks like Mike Portnoy, then when he was done I politely asked, excuse me sir has anyone ever told you that you look like Mike Portnoy? He's like, I get that a lot, because I am Mike Portnoy. I was blown away. It was an awesome moment for me, unfortunately neither my wife or myself had our phones on us since we were about to go jet skiing so I didn't get a picture with him. But, anyway he was so nice, talked to him about drums and I asked him about Adrenaline Mob and he said he wasn't in that band anymore and was working on a project that would become The Winery Dogs. This was in 2013.

I met him at a Van Halen show on their last tour. In between bands I saw him in the back near the bathroom and the concession stands. He was looking at his phone. He then went to walk away. I said "Excuse me, are you Mike?" He said "Yes I am." I said "Nice to meet you." He said the same and that was about the end of it. I got the feeling he didn't want to talk. If that's the only time I ever meet him, I guess it will have to do.

The vision of Mike not playing in Dream Theater (even though its been years now) is almost as inconceivable as seeing him playing a single bass 5-piece kit.

It's because it had the orange stars, the black hardware and double rack mount system werent enough to make up for those damned orange stars.
its crazy how one man can remember let alone come up with so much drumming for so many bands and songs. how do you store all that in your brain.

i love seeing stuff on what portnoy's doing today! He's a really cool guy by the looks of these videos. he's been my drumming hero ever since i was introduced to dream theater and i've learnt so much from his drumming, i dont know where i'd be without his drumming. Love this guy!

THE BUS TAPES!
My first drum set was a $90 CB 700 and I just used the batter head (remo pinstripes) and that little kit sounded huge and better than it would have with both heads (i tried it).

Love the kit!!! My kind of setup.Remember when Sabian hand a warranty on the cymbals ? Back in the basement days when brook mayes was a big supplier for musicians.

Concert toms Mike. Yes. Even a 57 up the throat can sound amazing, given head & tuning selection. Hydraulic heads can sound like doom on concert toms. Put them through a bit of reverb for added decay. Good on you Mike.

Anyone recognize the OVERHEAD MICS? I’ve seen them before in another video, in a studio setting, and loved the sound, but they never mentioned the make or model.
They may have been house mics, which is why Mike wouldn't have mentioned them. I'm honestly not sure though.
should have them do the paw print over the center dot on the tom heads. would be cool if he was hitting the center of a paw when playing.

Active grip yet he has stick grip on them
It's probably just what he's used to doing.
but it then makes the Active Grip pointless.

revolve band he's also a professional who drums harder than hell for hours.
He had stick on only one of them because he plays with the butt end of the stick on his left hand. The active grip is only on the part of the stick people normally grip.

What's the diference on single head toms?
it gives you a very punchy sound that doesn't ring out to long (depending on how you tune it ofcourse)
Joost van Beek oh, realy? So make sense for him to be using it, hmm thinking on upgrading here hahahahaha
the down side of it is that it only sounds good tuned relatively high, so if you like a low an beaffy drum sound this isn't the way to go. but to get a good idea of what it sounds like you should listen to some of the old iron maiden, van halen and helloween songs!

Ytebrule it sounds louder without doing an extra effort. I used to do that a lot. Mike probably got it from Bill Bruford.

Hasn't been many, if any, comments saying it's a weed reference, but thanks for the clarification. I'm sure this will be helpful to some of the video viewers.
Wasn't intending to sound like a dick honestly. I'll admit that I just reread my comment and it definitely came off badly, sorry about that. I just honestly haven't seen many people discussing this. I try to comment as much as possible, but it's tough keeping up with all of comments on our videos unfortunately.

Mr. Portnoy looks sad. I bet he misses DT. DT fans miss you too Mike! I haven't bought an album since A Dramatic Turn because that album was pure ass. Last good stuff from DT was BC&SL. I really respect Mangini, but he is not DT. And even DT is no longer DT since you left.
He seems pretty happy to me. Being able to be creative with some many different bands/projects has got to be pretty fun.

Amazing drummer and love sabian but that tama snare sounds pretty rough.
Too much camera movement and lack of zoom outs of the actual gear. Great for audio though.
