Michael and Greg’s P.Y.T. sounds awfully similar to some of the sounds Stevie was using on HIS album, 1982 Original Musiquarium. This shouldn’t surprise y’all considering Greg’s history with the Uber-talented Stevie Wonder (his involvement in the development of the groundbreaking Songs in the Key of Life). The break really is mesmerizing. Funk/Pop/Soul/Jazz amalgamated into one song.

When I heard that bassline played, I immediately recognized the melody being played! Then he revealed the song was "She's A Bad Mama Jama" by Carl Carlton...and it was *not* the song I was thinking of. That bassline that he played sounded *very* similar to the opening bassline of Teena Marie's "I Need Your Lovin'", released in 1980. (Another interesting note is that after Teena Marie's departure from Motown Records following an acrimonious legal battle, she found her way over to Epic Records--which was Michael's label at that time--in 1983.)

    • @africkinamerican

The original PYT "demo" version is unlike anything I ever heard when I first heard. It's a re-imagining of a song that... wasn't the original. It's on the "Anthology of Michael Jackson" compilation set. A five disc set of all his best hits, a lot of unreleased songs, and demo version of classic songs, plus a dvd of his Dangerous Concert. And when I heard this version, I immediately fell in love with it. It's captivating, smooth, you can dance, or just mellow out to it. Most MJ fans know the song well, and casual fans... who knows. But this is a sick discovery, how Bad Mama Jama can fit so well into those lyrics.. to the album version. I NEED more of that mix.

I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm an artist (drawing) and I've always remained purposely ignorant to music production bc of my fear of being too analytical and getting too deep into what makes something "sound good" to me. You go into great detail without getting too technical (even though you could) and I appreciate that as a viewer. Subscribed.

And even though I'm a music buff & have extensive & even sumtimes meaningless knowledge, you've definitely turned me on to sum things that I wasn't aware of. For example.... as an MJ SUPER fan, there is no reason why I shouldn't own that version of PYT. But I'll admit, a lot of albums I wont purchase because I'll feel like I have all the songs already, and sum slip through. Like when I 1st heard Fly away, I was BLOWN away. Ur knowledge of music (especially Soul) is impressive & refreshing. I'M callin this 1. So u can tell anyone that I SAID SO... But u can come to the cookout anytime man.

There are a lot of bass line that sounds similar. And I think this is because bass is an element that is more rhythmical than melodic while being both. The bass follows the chords and i've noticed that if some songs share the same chords progression (regardless the key) and the same "mood"/groove, it's likely that they will sound similar or exactly identical, not necessarily always with the "stealing" intent.

Dope. Another thing to add to this conversation is that some musicians have their favorite keys and ways of playing.
I notice I have similar licks and runs when I'm playing keys. While my beats are different, the chord placement of the melody movement is similar.
    Let's call it a musician's musical DNA.

Wait, so your accusing Michael of stealing a song that he didn't write? At least he wrote Billie Jean which you made your argument for him ripping off from Hall & Oats whether that argument is valid or not...at least he wrote the song in question. But now it seems like you're just making a general narrative that he was a flat out song stealer. I will give you props for the mashup at the end though. That was cool.

Quincy's productions always have series' of signature sounds. Like literal signatures, just notice "smooth criminal" riffs around the chorus, compared to "ya mo be there" and a similar sound in the movie soundtrack of the Wiz. i wouldnt consider it stealing if he is working with the production team.

But listening to it now, it sounds sooo dated and sooo 2008, as you said. Really odd how some tracks that you considered bangers back in the day can sound so different after many years.
