Epic Time-Lapse - John Deere Muscle Reborn - Welker Farms Inc

  • This is a low hour JD 844 wheel loader that was all but lost after the water pump leaked into the crank case causing engine failure. The old V-8 John Deere engines are few and far between which makes them very pricey and difficult to find. After seeing this loader sit in a yard for 7 years we decided to take up the challenge of re-powering the beast. My brother and I determined a 8.3L ISC Cummins tuned around 300 hp would be a great replacement of the old 260 hp V-8. After finding a used engine from a rolled truck and the correct bell housing, the project began. It took 2-3 months from start to finish and the result was more than we could have imagined. We've put her 53,000 lbs of iron and 300 hp to use moving hundreds of yards of rock as well as lots of dirt work. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments or private message me!

    Most people have NO idea what it takes to be a farmer, especially on a large farms such as the Welkers operation.
    I was impressed when you used a tire balancing machine to balance out the flywheel assembly. I was also impressed when you used your drill/mill machine as a lathe. Great work.

      Heck I AM a farmer and this brings me joy... They just are so...decent, no political bitch, no complaints of whatever, no agenda, just decent folk, working hard and loving god. Nick would be the first to admit that its not all peaches and cream.. but its nice just to see them work through it. .. They are just inspiring.

      It always seems like an easy job but EVERY repower we have done we run into big problems that require a lot of head scratching. Our best tools though would be our lathe and end mill, with those two you can make adapter plates to mate just about anything together.

  • @randr10
    @randr10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This thing is a beast. I have zero use for something this size, but I want one really bad lol. Nice job on the re-power. A machine like this would cost you a mint if you tried to go out and finance a turn-key new one.

      Nice that you and your brother repowered the payloader. When John Deere put the V8 in its tractor our local dealer had a showing. This was in 1980's. I told the engineer that the V8 is a mistake and Deere should have put in a cummins. They looked at me like I was Nuts but the model was not around long.

    Repair. Reuse. Re purpose. Recycle. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG.
    Smarter all the way around. Sitting for 7 years without any TLC would mean a low price. Reuse of an engine that was still viable, means saving a bunch buying new. Investing some time and energy means a useful machine that pays for itself. Congrats.

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We paid $6000 for the loader, $3500 for the engine, and probably another $3000 in hydraulic pump rebuilds and parts. So for under $20,000 we have a loader that would run $30-$50 grand in its condition.

    I ran one back in the late 80's and early 90's, put a good many thousand hours on it. For the size of the machine one might think it was a bull in a china shop but it was a very nimble machine. It was our only machine so it had to be everything, loader, dozer, crane,compactor, snowplow, sander. Whatever needed doing it did. I personally really liked the original v8 engine although getting coolant in the oil was a common problem for them. Unfortunately the machine burned to a crisp in a shop fire.

    Nice Restoration.... Also, like the video quality and the way you shoot the vids. Looks a lot like our farm. Hopefully, we don't go bankrupt and have to sell our farm Though. Keep up the good work!

      +Riley Kaufman thank you! Don't go bankrupt! Farming isn't easy right now but once the farm is gone it is gone forever. Hang in there!
