Many people posting about the whaling, The whaling in the Faroe's is a necessity, the catch is shared out among the community for sustenance.
No one worries about Sheep Pigs and Cows that are slaughtered, Pilot whales are not on the endangered list and are killed quickly.

there is a kind of nutrients that are in sunlight but in faroe island, we have dont have so much sunlight, but the nutrients are also in the whales
so we do it to live.
you dont need to do it becose you have more sunlight.

As a point of clarification in Alaska there are no Inuit! [Unless they are ex-pats and not, therefore, native.]
There are however Eskimo (or Arctic People, if you are of the overly sensitive type) and Indian people, who are known collectively as Alaska Natives. As a native Alaskan (meaning "born and raised in AK but not of a native people") I'm not blowing sunshine.
I grew up in the southern part of AK where there were the Indian (self described) communities existed and went to school in the mi

we have hunted and eaten them ever since the first people arrived.. some of the only other food available was birds, fish and sheep and they don't pack a lot of fat. and don't worry the ecosystem is just fine (apart from the general pollution of the sea) no one is hunting for the whales miles and miles out at sea, it is only when the whales get close enough that the hunt begins, besides if the whales were to simply dive under the boats the whole hunt would basically be over :)

I never thought Faroese had any alikeness to Norwegian worth mentioning, before I heard your accent in English. It's very similar to when Norwegians speak English. Nice scenery anyway, and the girls are beautiful.

I saw a Grindadráp a few years back and I really can't see what the problem is. The whales were killed quickly and humanely, not butchered as many people like to believe. It was exciting to watch but also a little sad to see living things die, but that's the way of the world. You could tell that the people doing the hunting felt the same way, and no one was full of mindless blood lust. They were simply harvesting the sea of its riches. You don't understand a Grindadráp until you see one.

Free range animals are not free. They are still captivated and deprived of their freedom. Unlike you these natives rely much more on real free range animals. Even their sheep´s walk free. They are not deprived of their freedom behind fence. You are clearly bashing the wrong people.

i understand your concern, but the people eating the whales are well aware of the toxins in them, just as well as any smoker would be in regards to their cigarettes. but still people are eating whale meat and people are still smoking, it is a matter of choices that only they are making. all that aside i will agree with you that it used to be barbaric and cruel and the attention that has gotten has brought about changes in the hunting methods trust me :)

@Maryjoends I understand that you get sad of seeing whales die, but you gotta understand how we do it. The whales swim close to our beaches, then we go out after them. Then we kill them in like 2 seconds. When you see them move and swing their tails and everything, its just nerves, when we kill sheep they jump around on the ground, well not really jump around, but move, its the nerves. I hope you learned something friend! Have a good day.

  • @ContrastNY

@Maryjoends The Faroese need the whale meat for survival just as the Inuits of Alaska do. The only difference is the Inuits hunt endangered species of whale and the Faroese hunt non-endangered pilot whales.
Have you been there? Have you met with any Faroese? If so, you would know how much they need it to subsidize the incredibly high cost of living, since everything must be imported by the limited shipping to the Faroe Islands.

@tasteegold777 I'm not saying we are poor, just that the whale doesn't go to waste (many people believe that we kill it, then throw it away)
Alto the Faroe Islands are in a bit of a financial trouble right now.
And the fishing. we are very careful not to fish to much, manly because it's our lives support. So if we take to many fish, there isn't anything for the future generation.

@Maryjoends Can't you read? I said it wasn't a ritual where young boys become men.
And FYI most people who have seen the Grindadráp in real life, don't think it's that horrific.
even people who are big members of greenpeace etc. etc.
there was this one exchange student from Australia, who was second in charge of some greenpeace like organisation. But when she saw the grindadráp with her own eyes, she thought it was pretty cool. So don't make your mind up, before you have seen it yourself.

  • @ninanyggju985

The methods used are as efficient, quick and effective as any slaughter. That is acknowledge by any one with basic knowledge about what is going on here and during any slaughter. Yes, looks brutal, but so would any slaughter of big animals in ope waters be. It only takes little blood to pain the sea red. Our industrialized slaughter is also not a pretty sight. Do not judge these people harsher then you judge any that eats industrialized meat. That would be hypocritical

  • @5fivefire
    @5fivefire 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Its just as neccosarry or just as unnessorary to kill this kind of animal for food, as any other food. You can pick out Any single food source and claim humans can survive without that single source.
But the point is that these natives prefer this kind of animals over others and its far better for both nature and animals that they prefer animals that actually lived a good life, free in nature, then any industrialized food.

As far as I know Pilot whales are not endangered unlike the species that the Japanese hunted in Antarctica. I don't see any harm done. Here in America in some states we have legalized deer hunting seasons; starting with bow, then rifle, then muzzleloader. In a sense it's not any different than harvesting whale meat but people here don't get worked up over deer hunters like they do whale harvesters. Believe me, America is full of hypocrisy.

    Pt 3: the Last
No self respecting Eskimo would ever self describe as "Inuit" unless they actually cared enough to make you cheechakos feel more comfortable. Call it 1 out of ... ... nope ... instances. Much like the Faroese in their immense sense of cultural pride, in fact.
On to the point regarding whaling. As an *educated* hippy, unless you the reader or poster are -completely- living off your land and harvesting EVERYTHING you consume (down to your water) you don't, IMO, get to throw rocks

@Maryjoends I wonder. Are you a vegetarian? How can you feel more pity for these whales than for a closer relative like a calf?
You need to understand we're Carnivores. We eat meat. Whale meat is delicious, and as long as we kill them in a humane way there is nothing wrong with it.
They feel little to no pain because their braines stop functioning from the lack of blood. This is why you are so shocked, because of the bloody sea. But trust me when i say the pain last only a second.
